  2. Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has been responsible for many of Toyota's motorsport campaigns which includes Formula 1, World Rally Championships and the 24 Hours Le Mans competition. And ever since Toyota pulled out of Formula 1 in 2009, the company has been busy with several projects; mainly with the development of the TS030 Hybrid Le Mans race cars that participated in the 24 Hours Le Mans recently. Toyota Team Europe Group A Toyota Celica GT4 ST185 A little history about the company before we continue with the story. Toyota Motorsport GmbH started in the 1970s as Toyota Team Europe (TTE). The company was responsible for providing technical support for rally driver, Ove Andersson, who was driving a Celica at that time. They also developed the first Japanese car to win the WRC. In 1993, TTE changed their name to what it is today and they got involved in other racing competitions as well such as the Le Mans and Formula 1. Toyota Motorsport GmbH, which is located in Cologne, Germany is run by Yoshiaki Kinoshita who recently mentioned that he wants TMG to become Toyota
  3. The Opel Corsa engine portfolio is expanded with a powerful and efficient 120 bhp 1.4 liter turbocharged ecoFLEX gasoline engine with a Start/Stop system. It will make its debut together with the new All Black/All White Corsa colour themes. The turbocharged 1.4 liter ecoFLEX unit will also be available across the rest of the Corsa line-up starting this summer in Europe. It drives the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and enables both the three- and five-door versions of the supermini to reach a top speed of 195 km/h with a century sprint timing of 10.3 seconds. Although it churns out more horsepower than its rival, the Polo Sport, the baby VW sprints faster to the 100km/h mark at 9.7 seconds. Thanks to the fuel saving Start/Stop technology, both the three and five door Corsa variants with the 1.4 turbo ecoFLEX unit consume petrol at a rate of 5.5L/100km with CO2 emission as low as 129 g/km. The All Black model is finished in a Carbon Flash shade and the All White in a Casablanca White paint. The logo bar across the front grille is also body-coloured and elegantly blends in with the rest of the vehicle. The uniquely painted and polished 17" bicolor wheels match the All Black / All White body color and give the Corsa a contemporary look. On the inside, there are white air vent rings for the All White Edition and matt chrome rings for the All Black version. Both models get special seat fabrics with silver coloured seams as standard along with sport pedals, multi-function leather steering wheel and dark tinted windows. On the option list is the unique Flex-Fix integrated bicycle carrier, Adaptive Forward Lighting system (AFL), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and park assistant.

  5. The Mini hatchback is close to its sell by date. Now in its second generation, the model has been around for over 10 years (since 2001). It was reported last month that the company were planning to release a special model for the final farewell of the Mini hatchback. It will be known as the Mini John Cooper Works GP II and pictures of it has surfaced on the Internet. This is not the first time Mini has pulled this trick. The Mini John Cooper Works GP was released when the first generation Mini hatchback was about to be replaced with a new model (which is the current generation Mini hatchback). The original Mini John Cooper Works GP was generally a tuned and stripped out Mini JCW. Churning out 218bhp from its 1.6-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine. The rear seats were removed and replaced with an internal strut brace, aluminium suspension components and also removed was the sound insulation. This resulted in a 40kg weight loss and a century sprint of less than 6.5 seconds. The above is pretty much about the original Mini JCW GP. Now let us see what Mini has to offer for the JCW GP

  9. hi all, In the event of an insurance claim, if the surveyor go down and see the car has turbo installed (not originally installed), will the insurer void the insurance even if the turbo is not the damage part? or will they jus ignore and continue to allow claims for the other parts damaged? anyone have experience or can give advice? thnx alot!

  11. [extract] Not too long ago, Porsche announced its plans for a smaller-sized suv to accompany its Cayenne and expand its model line-up. Not much details were available at that time besides a rendered image of the car. Now, more technical news about the baby suv has been revealed. Many speculated the model name while some were certain that it would be named the Porsche Cajun, but the German automaker has given a different name all together-the Macan. Porsche explained the name to be derived from an Indonesian word meaning 'tiger' and expresses the
  12. [extract] If I were to ask what is the car in the picture above, you would probably have a hard time guessing. For those who could guess it, you deserve a pat on the back. For those who can't, it is actually the legendary Toyota Celica GT4 ST 185. The car was famous for dominating the World Rally Championships during the first half of the 1990s and it was also the first Japanese car to win the championship. Toyota
  13. Alfa Romeo recently announced that the stylish Giulietta hatchback will soon get a new entry level model. According to the Italian car maker, this new entry level engine will be a detuned version of the 120PS 1.4 litre turbo unit, which is currently the entry level power plant. The lower power engine produces 105PS at 5000 rpm with 206 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. It is speculated that Alfa did not choose the 1.4 litre naturally-aspirated Multiair petrol lump as the entry level engine due to its lower torque output. The new 1.4 litre turbo is expected to bring the Giulietta from 0 to 100km/h in 10.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 185km/h. Coincidentally, the sprint time is the same as the entry level VW Golf 1.2 TSI DSG. The
  14. Performance cars usually rely on large displacement engines that deliver high power. But technologies such as turbocharging and direct injection have changed things nowadays and Ford is looking at a more powerful version of its 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine. Ford officially introduced its 1.0 litre turbocharged three cylinder EcoBoost engine late last year. It was developed by Ford engineers in the United Kingdom and the engine generates around 123bhp. The engine will be used in the Ford Focus and a 100bhp version will be introduced in Ford models such as the C-Max, Grand C-Max and B-Max. Normally, we won
  15. The usage of turbocharged engines is getting pretty rife in the last decade or so. The main reasons for this are exhaust emission regulations and also the positive highway mileage that turbo-ed engines offer. Lamborghini is one automaker that has always used high displacement, naturally aspirated engines in their cars and they have no intentions to change that. During an interview with Autocar, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelman mentioned that he does not see Lamborghini using turbocharged engines in this decade but he also said that it could happen in the near future. In addition, he stated that the future can take its own path when fuel regulations are involved and any development along those lines must be consistent with the DNA of Lamborghini. Winkelman added that the next generation Gallardo is set to be launched in around two years time and it should not come with a turbocharged engine. However, there are rumoured reports of Audi working with Bentley on a turbocharged V8 engine to be used in the next Audi R8 and the engine might be used on higher performance cars within the Volkswagen Group. Although turbocharged engines are used heavily on most of Lamborghini
  16. [extract] The turbocharging of engines in modern cars today is getting pretty common. You can see all sorts of forced induction set-ups, from a small-sized single turbo and up to a twin-turbo set-up. But a triple turbo set-up is something new and two German automakers are venturing into that foray. The rumours of BMW

  18. Many years ago there was no such thing as a SUV. What we know today as SUVs are known at that time as trucks. Trucks of that time are basically large in size, heavy, offer four-wheel drive capabilities, drab looking and are pretty slow. And when you talk about handling, it means that the vehicle should be able to manoeuvre off-road with ease while all four wheels planted to the ground. Times have indeed changed things a lot. Just take a look at the 2012 Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG. It is the most powerful SUV available in the market and it can easily outrun most cars today, even some sports cars. With an introduction of the new-generation M-Class in 2011, it is widely expected that Mercedes Benz will introduce a high performance sub-model for the M-Class. It is common for an automaker to display differences towards its high performance models and the ML 63 AMG is no exception. With regards to most SUVs, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a base model and its higher performance sibling and the only way is to check the rear badging. Mercedes has ensured that there will be no confusion when we look at the ML 63 AMG. The car gets a fully redesigned outlook. The front fascia uses more black parts instead of chrome. Larger central and side air vents gives the car a more masculine and aggressive look. Subtle side skirts extend towards the rear bumper of the car. Just like the front, the rear bumper is dominated with large, angular vents. While the exhausts on the base ML models are hidden behind the rear bumper, the ML 63 gets chromed quad-designed exhausts pipes. A performance model usually gets better brakes set-up and larger tyre size and Mercedes have exactly done that. The front brakes feature 15.4 inches ventilated and drilled brake discs and six piston callipers and the rear gets a slightly smaller 13.6 inches brake discs and four piston callipers. The car gets a special designed 20 inch wheels over the standard model. The engine used in the ML 63 AMG is a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The all-aluminium engine delivers 518bhp at 5200rpm and a torque of 700Nm from 2000rpm, with a stock boost set of 14.5 psi (almost 1 bar). The car has a top speed of 250km/h (electronically limited) and is mated to a seven-speed AMG Speed Shift gearbox which is also controllable via paddle shifters. If the buyer opts for the AMG Performance Package, the car delivers a very impressive 550bhp and 760Nm of torque. In addition, the electronic top speed limiter is raised to 280km/h and a carbon fibre engine cover replaces the standard plastic cover. With the AMG Performance package, the 0-100km/h timing falls in just 4.6 seconds (4.7 seconds if without the package). Lastly, the gunmetal brake callipers are painted bright red and this is by far the easiest way to distinguish which models have the AMG Package. Mercedes' Airmatic suspension, Ride Control and Active Curve system comes as a standard and there are three driver-selected modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus) which electronically controls roll stabilisation and damping. Under full load, the air suspension will raise and lower the vehicle based on speed so as to improve handling, stability and aerodynamics. In the interior department, the ML 63 AMG gets the usual AMG specific parts and accessories. The front gets sports bucket seats and all seats are wrapped in premium leather. The thick, Alcantara leather wrapped four spoke steering wheel is one of the specific AMG Performance Package item which replaces the normal half leather and wood steering wheel. Mercedes Benz has delivered a mild looking beast that breathes on a powerful engine. It may appear boxy to some and pretty ordinary looking (if you were to compare other SUVs in its category, e.g. Porsche Cayenne Turbo) but what Mercedes can brag about is that it is the most powerful SUV in its class. And many years ago a SUV like this is impossible to envision. Photo credit: Net Car Show
  19. During the recent Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota showcased several of their models which were developed together with Gazoo Racing. Two of the vehicles were the GRMN Yaris and the GRMN iQ and both cars were forced induced. Many in the auto industry believed that Toyota is taking a giant leap into small-sized forced induced engines for their future cars. In recent years, Toyota has focused much of its engineering development in hybrid vehicles while many of its competitors are instead focusing on downsized, direct injection turbo engines (for e.g. Hyundai). Turbo engines may not offer the excellent urban fuel economy that hybrids offer. What they do offer is performance that buyers typically want and also better highway mileage. Plus, they are much cheaper to build compared to those complex hybrids. Toyota is lagging behind in next-generation direct fuel injection technology that offers more efficient ways in the mixture of air and fuel so as to provide a boost in both performance and mileage. Another key technology that Toyota is lagging behind is next-generation transmissions. Although they do have an eight-speed auto transmission in their luxury cars (e.g. Lexus LS) but many of their cars still uses a four-speed auto which many people see as an outdated item. There are rumours going around stating that the Japanese automaker has an intensive program for the development of direct fuel injection and small-sized turbocharged engines, with a possibility of them being used in the next few years. This will enable Toyota to keep up with other automakers. According to a recent report in a Japanese newspaper, the downsized direct injection turbo engine will begin to appear in domestic models first and as early as 2013. Toyota will then start to use them in emerging markets such as China. The next generation Toyota Corolla is cited to be the model that will most likely get the newly developed engine and also, there is a possibility that the Toyota Camry will feature the same engine too, without waiting for a full model change. Even though Toyota has current models which feature supercharged engines, we might see a change in this as small-sized direct injection, turbocharged engines are fast becoming the common choice for automakers today and this could further increase the competitiveness for Toyota

  22. [extract] The original VW Beetle is one of my favourite cars. It might not have huge horsepower figures or a sleek, sloping roofline but overall in my eyes, the car is nice to look at; something that is cool to drive. When Volkswagen released the New Beetle, I had mixed feelings about it. But eventually I had to accept it as time always bring about changes. Although Volkswagen released a powerful version of the New Beetle equipped with the 3.2 litre VR6 engine, the local dealers did not bring it in. One of the reasons I heard on why it didn
  23. Initially when the Subaru BRZ was released recently, Subaru announced that there will be no turbocharged version of their BRZ model. Many in the automotive world were left disappointed. Some felt that it would be a waste for Subaru not to release a powerful version of the car. Furthermore Subaru is known for their expertise in turbocharged engines and since the BRZ is using a boxer engine, that piece of news make it even more disappointing. Just before Subaru showed the BRZ to the world, they said that the car will have less than 300bhp. But eventually it was offered with the same engine and same power specifications as the 86. But latest reports have shown that Subaru will eventually release a turbocharged version of the BRZ. Subaru of America has announced that they are planning on building a turbo version of the boxer engine used in the BRZ in order to create a BRZ Turbo model. Subaru will work on the FA20 boxer engine which is being built at the Oizumi engine manufacturing plant, the same plant where Toyota
