  3. The Straits Times, Published on Nov 06, 2012 No true democracy with [antiquated] US Electoral College system TODAY'S presidential election in the United States raises the question of whether the country is really a democracy with the Electoral College system. Does every vote count? The US uses the Electoral College, which consists of 538 state electors to elect its president. So it is not individual Americans who vote to pick the president, but the 538 electors of the Electoral College. In the 2000 US presidential election, Democrat Al Gore received the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College vote count to Republican George W. Bush. Technically, Mr Gore won that election as more Americans voted for him than for Mr Bush. This has happened three other times in past US presidential elections. Will it happen again this time? Will the candidate with the popular vote not become the next US president? There cannot be true democracy with the Electoral College system. Cho Yan Fatt Copyright

  5. ( . )( . ) can be a dangerous weapon hor .... Yahoo news: Woman Found Guilty Of ‘Assaulting Police Officer With Her Breasts’ A woman has been convicted of assaulting a police officer with her breasts during a violent protest in Hong Kong. Ng Lai-ying was taking part in a demonstration against parallel trading on the streets of Yuen Long in March this year when the incident is said to have took place. The 30-year-old claimed that Chief Inspector Chan had tried to grab her bag but instead touched her left breast. However, Inspector Chan insisted that it was Lai-ying who bumped her breasts onto his arm before falsely accusing him of assault. The magistrate sided with Chan, telling Lai-ying: “You used your female identity to trump up the allegation that the officer had molested you.” He added that her “malicious” claims were damaging to Chan’s reputation. Pictures following her arrest show Lai-ying with a bleeding nose and she accused police of pushing her to the ground. The magistrate said that officers policing protests “should be protected”, adding: "There were two groups of people expressing different points of view at the protest. “Without police officers there to maintain order, it is not surprising that there was commotion, or even clashes.” Yai-ling will be sentenced later this month. link: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/woman-found-guilty-of-assaulting-police-officer-074912219.html
  6. ----- Subject: Puzzle Three men went to a hotel to share a room. The clerk asked for $300. Each man paid $100, making up the $300. The hotelkeeper then decided to allow a discount for the day, charging only $250 for the room. He told the clerk to return $50 to the three men. The clerk pocketed $20 for himself. He gave the remaining $30 back to the three men. Each man took back $10. Therefore, each man paid $100 - $10 = $90 for the night. $90 x 3 = $270 + the clerk's $20 = $290. Question: Where has the remaining $10 gone?
  7. Certis Cisco officer found dead with gunshot wound to head By Alvina Soh | Posted: 29 January 2013 2014 hrs SINGAPORE: A Certis Cisco officer was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head in a toilet of the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon, said the police. The deceased was a Chinese woman in her early 20s who had been working with Certis Cisco for about one year. At about 1.20pm, police received a call informing them that a person was found injured at the court's toilet cubicle. Not sure what the hiring standard is for these aux police. Will some of them start shooting the public if they go mad?
  8. Hi Guys. Firstly, thanks in advance for reading this. Something weird happened to my Liteace alarm system for the last two days. I tried to install a new 12V Cabin Dome LED and it did not work. So I placed the normal filament bulb back into the Dome Chassis and no light has come on ever since. Note that I'm quite sure I din short any part of the circuit. Now, the digital clock is gone as well (seems like no electricity) and cabin light cant be turned on. Additionally, my alarm system seems to went bonkers. I made sure all doors are closed yet alarm will go off (like as if doors are not closed properly). Ironically, I am still able to use the remote to lock the whole car but whenever I do so, my mileage meter will reset and my radio's recorded channel wil be gone. I have looked into the fuse box and found all fuse to be intact and in good condition. As such, I am suspecting that its the fault of my alarm system. Anybody faces the same problem? Just want to make sure as I dun wanna change a new system and this problem persist. Thanks again!

  15. Take note if you had topped up Shell 95 petrol at the Seletar Hill Shell petrol station along YCK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A manager found his car vibrating uncontrollably, as if "the engine was about to explode", after it was topped up with petrol that had been mixed with water, a report said yesterday. Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that Mr Chen had made a trip to the Seletar Hill Shell petrol station in Yio Chu Kang Road at around 9pm on Monday to refuel his car before heading home. But upon reaching his block in Hougang, the 46-year-old's car started to shake, and the engine began rumbling. The intense shaking of his car, coupled with the noise it was making, made it seem as if the car's fan-belt was about to snap and the engine about to explode, he said. "It was quite terrifying," Wanbao quoted Mr Chen as saying. "At first I thought my car engine was faulty and planned to send it for repair. But at about 2pm the next day when I wanted to drive out to the repair shop, I found I couldn't start my car," he said. "I thought my car had broken down but later I received a call from the petrol station asking if I had refilled my tank there the night before." The petrol station's staff reportedly told Mr Chen that there was a problem - without specifying what it was - and that he had to take the car back for repairs. Mr Chen told the paper that industry experts he spoke to suspected that the petrol pumped into his car had been mixed with water, causing the engine to act up. The petrol station reportedly received complaints from several car owners that there was an issue with the petrol. The paper reported that it remains unclear whether the problem had been caused by an individual or by heavy downpours. Shell was reported to have confirmed that water got into one of its Shell FuelSave 95 petrol tanks at its Seletar Hill outlet. A spokesman said it has stopped selling petrol from that particular tank and that other tanks have not been affected. Shell was said to have started an in-depth investigation into the matter.

  17. SINGAPORE - All they wanted was a way to send their 92-year-old mother to the hospital. The Chngs called the 1-777 Non-Emergency Ambulance Service (NEAS) last month. An ambulance operator quoted them $180 and some additional charges for the trip. But at the end of the 30-minute ride from their home in Choa Chu Kang to Singapore General Hospital, the family was hit with an $800 bill. Some of the add-ons on the bill included $150 for oxygen, $80 for bandages and $200 for painkillers. The private ambulance operator, Singapore Medical Care Training and Services (SMCT), has since been suspended by the NEAS Quality Committee. The Ministry of Health said it had received eight complaints, including the Chngs', since SMCT joined the NEAS network on Feb 8. It is understood that most of the complaints were about overcharging. The Chngs' mother, Madam Lim Soon Oh, had a fall at home the day before and the pain was causing her to skip her meals and medicine. Worried, her three sons decided to send her to the hospital for a checkup on May 10. Mr Edwin Chng, 56, an engineer, needed an ambulance as his mother could not get into a car or taxi as her fall prevented her from bending her knees. When the vehicle arrived, the paramedic told the family that the mother needed painkillers. On the ride to the hospital, paramedics put her on an intravenous (IV) drip and administered oxygen. They also placed two bandages on her knees. One of her sons, Mr Jason Chng, 53, said he did not think of questioning the ambulance attendant or to find out the cost of the various treatments. Their brother, Mr David Chng, 66, a chauffeur, went along with the ambulance. He said: "They showed me a list, everything was a minimum of $10, $20. We thought that since they are professionals, they should know what they are doing. We didn't want to stop them... After all, we want the best for our mother. I thought that at most, it would cost $400." Despite the shock of the bill, they decided to pay up because Mr Edwin Chng's and his mother's identity cards were with the ambulance staff. "All we wanted was to transport my mum to the hospital, any additional treatment she needed could be provided by our family doctor, or even the hospital," said Mr Jason Chng. When The New Paper contacted SMCT in early June, its spokesman said: "We are a private emergency ambulance operator with no subsidy or third party support or funding. Our charges may appear to be high as they are non-subsidised... In our view the charges are most reasonable. "Other operators may be cheaper as they have low overheads and low expenses." Besides ambulance services, SMCT provides home nursing services and is an accredited training centre, which provides first aid and medical training for medical personnel and the public, according to its website. They have a total of five ambulances, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) website. The 1-777 scheme was started in 1998 for those who require ambulances for non-emergency cases. There are 20 private ambulance operators registered in the scheme. There is a list of the operators and charges on the SCDF website. Mr Jason Chng felt that his family has been penalised for being considerate. "We saw our case as non-urgent and called 1-777. The price is ridiculous for a transport of a non-emergency patient to the hospital." The Chngs' $800 bill Emergency call $180 Oxygen $170 IV drip $150 Bandages $80 Painkillers $200 Miscellaneous $20
  18. Ok as you all know, cerium oxide (CeO) paste is the best glass polishing agent. Available from Mr Sheeto. I report I have sped up the polishing process with alcohol. The optical clarity of the glass has improved a lot as well. OK why polish with CeO? It is actually a procedure prior to the silanizing treatment like RainX and Glaco. You have to smoothen the glass make it squeaky clean first. To some, RainX and Glaco are a niusance and would like to remove them, CeO is the proven method to do it. After that the glass surface will be purely glass. No more functional silicon groups on it to repel water. Please note that water will not bead after CeO polishing. So how to do it? My method is below: 1 tub of dry CeO powder Sponge with green wool section (the above items to be taken from Sheeto) Some rubbing alcohol from pharmacy A squirt bottle filled with alcohol Before starting, I suggest the surface of the glass be dry and cool. So make sure it is not parked in the sun prior to this. If you plan to wash the whole car, do the glass first. 1. Pour a little CeO powder into the large plastic container that came with the CeO kit you bought from Sheeto. 2. Make milk slurry with it with a little alcohol. 3. Dab the sponge to absorb a little of the slurry and start rubbing it on the glass with circular motion. 4. The alcohol being volatile will dry rather quickly. Use the squirt bottle with alcohol and spray onto the worked surface to keep it moist with alcohol as you scrub it. After a while, the surface will not bead alcohol. This shows that the surface is already polished. 5. Flush with lots of water. I suggest doing one glass surface at a time. You can substitute alcohol with water but the polishing action will be slower. Much slower. Also alcohol with its lower surface tension actually produces a much smoother polished surface compared with water. After all that, treat your glass with your favorite silanizing agent. If you prefer to leave it as it is, that is alright as well.

  22. Hi bros, I was involved in an accident last month at newton circus, at Bukit Timah Road exit. My car was in the 4th lane of the bend and just as I passed Bukit Timah exit, there was another car in the 3rd lane which had knocked into my right rear bumper. That car was actually attempting to take the exit and just swerved left despite seeing my car 3/4 ahead of her. Then came this PRC woman shouting and insisting that it was my fault. We exchanged verbal war, one China style and the other S'pore style. During the conversation, she claimed I should have stopped my car, since I am ahead, for her to take the exit. She told me since it is my fault, I should pass her $300 to compensate her and she will not pursue anything. Told her go back mainland and play stones first. Never mind, I took down the details of what happened in my accident form which stated what had happened. On my copy, we both signed on every page to certify it's accurate. She has a similar copy too. The next day before she reported to her workshop, she called again to ask me to compensate her. All those she said the night before. Not wanting to waste time talking, told her it's ok, just go claim insurance since no one wants to private settle. After a month of waiting to know the outcome, my workshop C&C called today to tell me the china woman is engaging a lawyer to claim my insurance. Therefore, her insurance company will not be part of this process anymore. Accordingly to C&C, I can only do the same since she initiated this. I was told that her report to her insurance company is the direct opposite of what had happened. But because I have a black and white on the whole story bearing her signature, I have a strong case in my favor. Now before I decide what to do, can anyone advise if they have been in a similar situation before? Any comments on my next step? Appreciate if anyone or a legal advisor can enlighten me with the questions below. 1. If I decide not to engage a lawyer, what would happen then? Does this give her the right to claim my insurance straightaway? 2. If I lose the court case, do I pay for the other party's legal fees and then her car damages will be claimed against my insurance? 3. How long would such a case drag for? 4. What would my chances be? 5. What are the procedures for this whole saga? Thanks everyone for the time reading my long post!

  24. I have a 2006 Hyundai, 5 door, Getz with the 1.6 lt motor and five speed gearbox, the problem is that about 80kms per hour the car develops a vibration you can feel it and hear it. It does not come through the steering and I have had the tyres checked and balanced. It is most noticeable when in fourth gear at 80kms, if you put it into fifth which reduces the engine revs the vibration is not as noticeable, then by the time you get to 100kms the vibration is gone. It is also noticeable when accelerating at lower speeds whilst in second and third gear whilst gaining momentum. Have you any suggestions on what it might be and what should I fix or replace first any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  25. I just installed mine last week. The remote start doesn't work to my expectations. The problem: the cranking is too long and continues for about half a second after the engine is started. Not good for starter motor. My question: Is it an installation issue, or is this an inherent problem of SPY alarms? Something to note: I brought this up to the installer, and he said SPY alarms are like that. Somehow I don't quite believe him. A 5 pole relay was included in the package but the installer did not utilise it, instead he told me a 4 pole relay was used, citing incompatibility with my car (Avante). Anyone using the SPY alarm here as well? Please help to feedback. Thanks
