  1. LOL..... CNA report: 7 in 10 S'pore employers promote staff without pay rise Posted: 13 June 2012 1619 hrs SINGAPORE: Nearly seven in 10 (68 per cent) Singapore employers promote their staff without giving them a pay rise. Singapore comes in third after Chile (79 per cent) and China (70 per cent) as the top three countries that adopt this practice. That's according to a survey by recruitment firm, Robert Half. It polled 1,800 human resource managers across 17 countries. In Japan, only 26 per cent of HR managers promote their staff without pay increases, with 66 per cent saying they would never use the practice. According to the survey, 53 per cent of Singapore companies promote staff to more senior positions without a rise in salary because they prefer to offer a performance bonus instead. Another 47 per cent prefer to offer their employees more flexible working hours. Additional annual leave is also offered by 35 per cent of HR managers in lieu of additional pay. Robert Half said there are risks for companies offering a promotion without a pay rise, and employers should offer adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits to retain their staff. Ms Stella Tang, director of Robert Half Singapore said, "While pay is not the only factor employees consider, if companies do not provide adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits, then they may lose their top performers to the competition. In particular, within the banking & financial services and commercial sectors, companies are struggling to get the right finance and accounting professionals to fill jobs. "If an employee with the right skills tests their worth in the employment market, they may find they have several job offers to choose from. If budget constraints mean no additional monetary compensation can be offered, the reasons why need to be clearly communicated." She added that for some employees, especially those with families, offering more flexible work arrangements may be of more value than money. "It comes down to whether an employee can come to an agreement with their employer that balances their professional goals with remuneration for their efforts," said Ms Tang. - CNA/cc More work, more responsibilities and who don't want pay increase, please tell me ....
  2. Seriously something is wrong here. A disgraced, on-the-run lawyer here could practice his trade in the Land of the Free & even travel frequently overseas for work? For 6 freaking years?!! Is it that the authorities never raise to INTERPOL's attention or if done so, no one basically "hue" our little red dot? Luckily some German was alert enough to arrest this joker and justice was served. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1191675/1/.html Court urged to 'send a strong message' with disgraced lawyer By Syed Amir Hussain, TODAY | Posted: 28 March 2012 0613 hrs

  4. For those that have your personal room in office, do you put any Air Refreshner or Ionizer in your room? If yes, which fragrance do you like? Thinking of getting one but only concern the smell could be too empowering, or may have long term side-effects for my health.
  5. hello, my daughter is interested in paper artwork, like cutting/folding papers to make a castle, etc..... she is 6 years old... does anyone know of any art school providing paper artwork? thanks in advance.
  6. I learnt this the hard way. Packaging of work effort is very important. It's not enough being an excellent worker...it's more important how you package it. I wasted much of my youth (20s to 30 yr old) thinking that so long as I did a good job, I will be recognized. It can't be further from reality. What I learnt and apply constantly (with some level of success) is if you are doing a piece of work....you need to show... 1. What is the business rationale behind your work. What problems are you solving and why it is so important. In short I need to identify business stakeholders. I don't waste my time on work if there is no clear business stakeholders or business stakeholders that matters. 2. What are the various steps you take. Always talking about what are my strategy...what are the tactics taken. Never confuse strategy with tactics. Tactics can fail...but strategy should not. Who comes up with Strategy? Me. Who execute the tactics? My directs or vendors. You get the drift i hope. 3. What is the positive impact to business as a result of the steps you undertaken And I make sure end of the day, my direct boss looks very good as he/she present it to higher up. I heard some of the younger folks complaining about how their managers only know how to talk. Well guys, it's a very important skill if you wanna move up the ladder. I wish someone told me this when I was younger. Ok...just a friday rant

  11. IT IS ironic that with the days off for maids, employers with young children and the elderly must now have to work even harder ('Weekly day off for maids a must from next year'; Tuesday). Otherwise, who will do the chores and look after the children and the elderly when the maids are enjoying their days off? My annual leave allocation will not increase, so if no one does the chores, it will only mean that the maid will have to do double the amount of work the day after her day off. Chew Kum Chung source: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_775484.html ------------------------- Any thoughts or opinions on this? Anyone who have a boss who makes you work 3 times harder after u come back on Monday assuming u had enjoyed Sat/Sun off? Or a boss who makes u work 21 times harder after u clear 21 days of annual leave?

From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_773752.html Not always easy to work with older employees Published on Mar 5, 2012 WHILE I have met and worked with many older staff who are dedicated, knowledgeable and helpful, I have also encountered many who are a constant challenge to work with ('Unproductive to stereotype older staff' by Ms Kelly Fu Su Yin; last Tuesday). Here are some instances:

  16. Been trying to get rid a sour smell from AC with no success, have done the following 1) Vacuum interior and clean carpets 2) Change AC cabin filter I want to get rid of the sour smell and not mask it with a strong car fragrance. Found several different brands of aerosol AC sanitizers at Autobacs, do they work? Usage instructions is similar for all brands, leave AC on with fan at full blast and then place aerosol at footwell until entire can is empty. Thanks.
  17. These foreign workers really pai tan... :o They really deserve every single cent they are paid & much more for taking on this type of high-risk jobs. From the photo, there were no lifeline nor safety harness for them who were all working at height on a slippery facade and faced unpredictable deluge of heavy rain. Effectively both their work condition and position controvened the Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA). From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...up_falling.html Posted on 03 Feb 2012 One false step, and these workers could fall off wet ledge at Changi Airport STOMPer Hoe spotted these foreign workers on a narrow ledge some 10m above the ground at Changi Airport, following a rainy spell. He wrote: "This group of foreign workers were seen working dangerously on a ledge at Changi Airport. "The ledge was wet after rain and was at least 10m high. "Aren't these workers covered under the Workplace Safety Act too? "Who would answer if they were to fall?"

  20. If you are a real man, should your wife work? Do men whose wives work mean that the men are incapable of raising a family by themselves? Is it true that men whose wives have to work to share the financial burden mean that the men are useless bums? * excluding Lee Hsien Loong and his wife, who are doing it out of duty to their Lee dynasty ancestors.
  21. OK, I know there has been countless threads on the net about it already. Decide to do my own review of it to answer the question. Bought a kit from ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/290635061663?ssPag...984.m1497.l2649 Thats the exact kit I bought. Bought 2 pieces 4" to 3" reducers from Man Exhaust today and install it. Wiring is quite simple. I wired it to the fog lamp relay thus I could turn it on or off thru the fog lamp switch. Thus the big question is does it work? Is it snake oil? Will it do wonders? Drove it around for ~100KM today as I was running some errands. In short, it does work to a certain degree. I ensure there is minimal placebo effect by turning with the switch on and off numerous times. Run at different RPMs, level of throttle etc. The amount of power boost is very slight. Its very similar to turning off the AC on a small CC car to gain more power. It does what it is advertise to do. Gains of around 5-7HP. Thats all. So, why aren't manufacturers using this device when its so cool?? Reliaibility and durability. These devices are not made to last at all. Housing is just fiber reinforced plastic and motor is a simple brush motor (though its using ball bearings). At best, it will last you around 600-800Hrs of use. After that you have to replace the carbon brushes or the housing. Fan blade is metal so it should last a while. So, can it be made to work? Yes, it can. Provided there is proper R&D. Eg. cast aluminum housing. brushless motor (there are water cooled motors as well). Fan blades that are designed to deliver high air pressure etc.... Electric superchargers and hybrids are already under research right now Btw..... I am not sure if this device can be used on vehicles running MAF. Mine is MAP so its not a problem.
