  1. Many here has switch from expensive Japanese cars to value for money korean makes. But in Korea, it maybe the begining of the other way round after tax cuts on imported vehicles were made recently in Korea. Trying to imagine if more models start flooding their maket with foreign Jap imports. The parallel Jap imports and Thai made Japanese models are just as expensive here in Singapore and why can't we get the cheaper made in USA version. http://www.mycarforum.com/blog/myautoblog/...the-year-award/

  8. I happened to watch some of the MediaCorp New Year celebration last night. Wasn't expecting such a mediocre performance by the invited artistes in general. But what was most surprising was the VW golf mk 7 sitting atop the stage and all the advertisements and segments. Anyone was put off by this? I certainly was. Why would MediaCorp invite such a marketing ploy for a big event like this? Surely something could be done in light of the COE situation. (I'm not against VW btw - just think the marketing is too aggressive)
  9. Hi guys, (the forum with some of the finest and smartest people), I need some help and advice. Assuming I were to go away for a year and I wont be back until next year. I have a 3 year old normal plate car and I intend to keep it, my COE for the car is about 8k. As I wont be around to drive the car, but because I am keeping it i need to pay road tax and insurance for it. Does anyone here have this knowledge about converting to OPC car? I am thinking if I can convert my car to OPC so that I can enjoy lower road tax and when I return I can just convert back. Does anyone knows how I can work around it? From what I know is that if I convert normal plate car to OPC, I just pay $100+ conversion fees and some money for a new licence plate and get the car a seal. I understand that if i keep the car for 6 months, every 6 months i will get $1100 is this true? If I want to convert back the car is it just pay $100+ again to reconvert to normal plate? Do i need to top up? Anyone has any knowledge on this or better solution? I will be very grateful. Thanks

Bcos I had spent great efforts & loads $ to maintain the car, it still looks brand new inside out (yes, how stupid of me). I dun mind about the price of car body, but rather the $ to put it on the road for use . . . . Please advice on a step-by-step guide to obtain the open COE for the abovementioned? Does it require inspection, insurance etc? Finally, is it worth it ???

  17. Not bad.,....COE sure huat ah SINGAPORE: Civil servants will get a year-end Annual Variable Component (AVC) of 0.7 month. Lower-wage officers will get an AVC of at least S$1,000, signalling the government's continued commitment to help low-wage workers. The Public Service Division in the Prime Minister's Office announced the bonus in a statement on Thursday. The statement said the bonus amount was decided against the backdrop of a "more subdued global economic outlook". It said: "Singapore's economic growth is expected to remain subdued for the rest of 2012, with the economy expected to grow by around 1.5%. "The electronics manufacturing cluster would continue to be weighed down by tepid external demand. On the other hand, expansion in the construction sector could provide modest growth support to the overall economy. "In addition, growth may be slightly lower than forecast if the weakness in the externally-oriented sectors persists into the final quarter of 2012." The year-end AVC payment was decided in consultation with the unions. Some 2,000 civil servants earning less than S$1,430 will benefit from the minimum AVC payment of S$1,000. For example, an officer drawing a monthly salary of S$1,200 will get a year-end AVC of S$1,000, instead of S$840 based on 0.7 month of his salary. About 96% of these 2,000 civil servants are Division IV officers. All civil servants will also get the Non-Pensionable Annual Allowance (NPAA) of one month, to be paid in December along with the AVC. - CNA/ir
  18. It is better to be driven to drink than to be driven to jail. This is one of this year's anti-drink driving messages. The annual campaign was kicked off today, with Singapore Press Holdings' ST Cars as title sponsor for the first time. The revamped portal, a buy-sell-rent platform for motorists and dealers, was launched today. At the campaign launch at Pan Pacific Hotel this evening, Second Minister for Home Affairs S. Iswaran shared that 2,141 motorists were arrested this year for drink driving between January and September this year, an increase from 2,056 in the same period last year. A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between ST Cars and the Singapore Road Safety Council, for a five-year partnership. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...swaran-20121120

  20. An 11-year-old boy is being investigated for allegedly posting a false statement on Channel NewsAsia's Facebook page about a bomb blast on the MRT network between Buona Vista station and Outram Park station. A member of the public who spotted the post reported it to the police. The police were able to identify the person who made the post. Investigations against the suspect are still ongoing. Anyone found guilty of transmitting a false or fabricated message relating to a bomb may be punished with a fine of up to S$50,000, or imprisonment of up to 7 years, or both. http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews...102-381170.html
  21. Say for instance car's COE lifespan ends in 1 year, and just want something to drive for short term? Will banks do 1 year loan?
  22. Recently one of my colleague left the company forgoing the bonus that will be given out at the end of the year. It caught many of us by surprise. Then I got a job switch opportunity this week. Just like to know if you would jump switch when bonus time is coming at the end of the year with the following : 1) No AWS and/or bonus from current company which pays out at the end of the year. 2) New job's salary abt 10% more than current one. 3) Transport allowance around the same. 4) New job offer a supervisory post over the current one. 5) Both job locations are around the same area. 6) New job local only while current needs to travel regionally. My current job is service engineering which requires me to travel to customers' area.
  23. Seems to see more road enforcers on the road these days~ Heard from some friends say they have quota to hit, especially year end, coz they may get higher bonus if total collected amount is high. Wonder if that is true... My car park used to be about 100% full after 9pm, now even after 11pm, there are still vacant lots. A stranger got summon when he just left his car at a side road. Lady in white hid in a corner, and came out to issue summon just when he left the car and walked about a few meters away. Guy turn head to check and ran back to car. They got into a heated argument, he almost beat the lady in white... Scared perhaps, the lady took back the ticket, not sure if she will send him a "home-run" letter later or not though... They look like want to issue summons very badly...

  25. ASIAONE / BUSINESS / NEWS / STORY Monday, Jul 23, 2012 my paper Real wages may drop 2.7 per cent this year Ms Chan Shu Jun has her eye on a new camera, but her rising monthly expenditure is making her think twice about buying it. The 25-year-old analyst in the financial sector estimates that she spends about half of her monthly income - in the region of $4,000 - on food, shopping and entertainment. Although her wages have increased by about 7 per cent in recent years, Ms Chan is still concerned by inflation and the spectre of shrinking incomes here. She said: "I'm exploring investment opportunities to offset inflation. There's no point saving money in banks as the interest rates they offer cannot keep up with inflation." Her concerns are shared by many, with real incomes likely to fall by 2.7 per cent this year, according to a survey by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) and wage consultancy Remuneration Data Specialists. This is despite an expected increase of 1.5 per cent in nominal wages. The survey - which was conducted last month and covered 167 companies across key sectors, like services and construction - shows that further wage stagnation is expected next year. Although nominal wages are expected to increase by 3.1 per cent next year, that will be offset by an expected 3 per cent inflation rate. The former chief economist for the Government of Singapore Investment Corp, Mr Yeoh Lam Keong said that Singapore faces both "wage stagnation" and "inflationary problems". "Wage stagnation appears to be a general trend globally but, in Singapore, this is exacerbated by the massive influx of low-wage workers, which depresses nominal wages," he said. SHRI executive director David Ang said he is especially concerned with the ability of low-wage workers to manage their daily expenses on transport and food. Any increases would eat into their disposable incomes, he explained. Mr Yeoh said that these expenses make up a big proportion of low-wage workers' "consumption baskets", thus an income drop will hurt their pockets. He suggests that the Government raise the Workfare Income Supplement Scheme payout significantly by "about two to three times, and allocate a bigger share of the payout in cash rather than in the form of CPF". This will help push low-wage workers past the poverty line, rather than "wait for productivity levels to increase to push real wages up". He said: "That would take too long." The survey also found that about eight in 10 companies are expected to hire new staff this year. This is projected to drop to fewer than six in 10 firms next year. Mr Yeoh believes that the sluggish United States economy, euro-zone crisis and China's faltering growth may dampen business sentiments here. "This could then cause a lack of business confidence to hire," he said. For more my paper stories click here. she spent 4K on food etc and that is half of her income and she worry how about those earning MUCH less than her.. sometime i wonder how the press work ... they either feature the extreme high or extreme low income group ... not realistic at all
