  1. http://gizmodo.com/man-forgets-about-buying-27-of-bitcoin-is-now-worth-a-1454150399 Man Forgets About Buying $27 of Bitcoin, Is Now Worth About $1 Million 1 Four years ago, Oslo-man Christopher Koch's girlfriend scoffed at his purchase of $27-worth of Bitcoin. Chances are she was singing a decidedly different tune last April, when Koch checked back in on his investment and found out it was worth $886,000. And over a cool million today. Back in 2009, Koch was working on a thesis paper about encryption, which introduced him to the relatively unknown world of Bitcoin. On little more than a whim, he decided to throw down $27 for 5,000 Bitcoins because the encryption process fascinated him and because why not. Koch then promptly forgot about the purchase—until Bitcoin started popping up in the news four years later, that is. Remembering his offhand investment, Koch frantically searched for the password to his wallet and was floored to find that, by last April's standards, he was sitting on an $886,000 nest egg. After trading in just one-fifth of his total purchase, he was able to buy himself an apartment in Toyen, one of the wealthiest areas in Oslo. Of course, Bitcoin is also notorious for occasionally erratic fluctuations in value, the most recent example being the seizure of Silk Road earlier in the month, which saw the price fall to $30 before skyrocketing again to $197. By today's standards, though, Koch's $27 investment of 5,000 Bitcoins is worth a total of $1,010,000. Not bad for a broke student with zero investment experience. [NRK via The Guardian]
  2. The Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) clarified today (Oct 21) that of the 2,438 motor vehicle complaints reported by the Straits Times on Saturday, only 1,084 were related to defective goods. The article — “Grouses about car dealers speeding up” — stated that the 2,438 complaints the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) received from January to September this year has exceeded the 2,255 made in the whole of last year. SVTA President Neo Tian Ting explained that the figure of 2,438 also includes enquiries and feedback, which do not require CASE to take action. Mr Neo also said that the spike in complaints this year can be attributed to the lemon law, which came into effect last September. Consumers, he said, could be contacting CASE more often as there is a misunderstanding of the lemon law. In fact, only 156 were filed and assisted cases pursued against SVTA members in relation to the lemon law and other complaints such as delays in delivery and misrepresentation — meaning CASE handled claims on the consumers’ behalf or assisted the consumers in drafting letters to approach the vendors themselves. Singapore has about 800 to 900 car dealers. About 410 of them are SVTA members. Source: http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/only-1-2-complaints-against-car-traders-were-about-lemons-svta
  3. Zheng hoo lang poh mata liao http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/facebook-user-draws-flak-posting-disparaging-remarks-about-filipinos?page=0%2C0 Facebook user draws flak for posting disparaging remarks about Filipinos Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - 00:00Chai Hung Yin The New Paper SINGAPORE - She described Filipinos as "poor", "smelly from cleaning toilets" and "uneducated". She also mocked Miss Philippines Megan Young, 23, for winning the Miss World 2013 in Bali on Sept 28. Using the name Devina DeDiva, her racial slurs, posted on her Facebook social networking timeline, invoked the ire of netizens and prompted one Singaporean to lodge a police report. Ms Devina had posted: "Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them Ha Ha Ha." The post attracted 20 likes and 468 shares within a day. It was not clear when she posted the status update as the latest search for the Facebook account turned up a message that said the page was unavailable. It is likely the page was removed. But outraged netizens were able to capture screenshots of the post and its comments before the account was deleted. Others have tried to establish Ms Devina's identity. She was initially thought to be an Indian national, but was later said to be a Singaporean Indian. She is said to be a student at SIM University and also works as a laboratory analyst. Her LinkedIn networking website account is believed to have also been deleted. The screenshots have been re-posted on other websites with scathing responses to her post. Many defended Filipinos. Someone named Manoj Sharma posted: "Filipino girls r cute, humble and honest as far as I know. I am glad to have great friends from the Philippines." But that invited a reply from Ms Devina, who posted: "They r poor, smelly from cleaning toilets & uneducated." When another netizen hinted that she is ignorant, she replied: "Ignorant? Get ur vocab checked dude majority r maids & 1 won such a title! It's shocking & dumb!" Photo Gallery: Racial slurs against Miss World winner Megan Young Click on thumbnail to view photos. Source: AFP / Reuters / Internet 'Student' When contacted by The New Paper, SIM University confirmed that it has a student going by the name cited by netizens. Its spokesman said: "We are doing our due diligence to establish the facts of the case. If ascertained that our code of conduct for students has been violated, we will take appropriate disciplinary actions." International media has reported that Ms Devina has lost her job following her postings, quoting "a reliable source". The International Business Times, an online publication headquartered in the United States, reported that she was "fired from her position as an assistant teacher of a school being run by Filipino superiors". She is believed to have created another Facebook account and continued her rants there. The police confirmed that a police report was made and they are looking into the matter. A Singaporean, who wanted to be known as Mr Anthony, confirmed that he had made the police report on Thursday at about 1pm. The 27-year-old civil servant told The New Paper: "I'm concerned with the comments made by this person, especially when racial harmony is threatened and I see this being spread online. "Racial harmony is very important and these kind of comments should not be tolerated." He said that he first read about the posts on a forum. He then logged into his Facebook account and saw screenshots of the comments that have been re-posted. He said: "I want to inform the police that there's such a thing and for them to find out, if there's any offence committed."
  4. Complaints against motor vehicle dealers have accelerated this year, and Singapore's consumer watchdog wants the industry to take action. The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) received 2,438 complaints against the motor vehicle industry from January to September. This already exceeds the 2,255 made in the whole of last year - when it topped Case's list of most-complained about industries for the first time. Most of the complaints were aimed at used car dealers. Common gripes included defective parts, late delivery, refusing to repair defects and keeping customers' deposits when loans were not approved. To mitigate the problem, Case wants all members of the Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) to provide after-sales service, including repairs. It also wants them to pay for third-party inspections of all cars and repair any defects before selling them. 5. come... let's talk about NS shall we? for me, the memories were mostly ok... some unforgettable ones were: - unknowingly took up a prone position in a nest of ants during a training exercise... jumped up and tio kan by the sergeant - dozing off during an evening ambush (at Tekong) and waking up suddenly in total darkness seeing nothing (couldn't even see my own hands) - lost the ring of a smoke grenade but luckily able to find it before the sergeant knew about it (avoid at least three extras!) - eating many leftover drumsticks like yao gui while cleaning the cookhouse the camps I've been posted to: - Nee Soon Camp - Tekong - Pasir Laba Camp (terrible memories!) - Mandai Camp - Khatib Camp - Sungei Gedong Camp - Paya Lebar Airbase (good life there!)

  8. I had been buying GNC "Glucosamine 750 Chondroitin 600" for several years in the local stores. It cost about S$150 per bottle of 120 tablets. I usually buy it during my birthday month under 33% discount as GNC member. Hence it cost about S$100 per bottle. Now, i am feeling quite astonished after I discover how much the same thing cost in the US after a recent trip there. I know that GNC is actually a US company and the local franchise is owned by global active which is a subsidiary of OSIM. The same thing cost about S$40 (vs S$150 nett in sg) in the US GNC store. Incredible mark-up. I wonder if the franchisor or the franchisee is earning the bulk of this mark-up?

Would appreciate feedback from the bros and sis driving the current Golf. In particular, Internet has a lot of negative reviews about the DSG gearbox. Does anyone driving the Mk 7 Golf have any issues so far? Thanks in advance.

  15. http://sbr.com.sg/economy/news/here-are-6-...poreans-incomes Here are 6 ugly facts about Singaporeans' incomes There's a downward trend in average monthly incomes. According to the Singapore Social Health Project 2013 by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre, declining trend in average monthly incomes and the increasing cost of living have made many Singaporeans feel vulnerable, especially those from lower-income families. The inadequacy of CPF for many who are retiring poses a threat to the well-being of the fast ageing population of Singapore. Singaporeans, especially the lower income, are increasingly finding it difficult to cope with escalating costs. The Gini coefficient has also increased, reflecting greater income inequalities. The report outlines six points that describe the current trends in Singapore's income security. 1. Real growth in average monthly household income per member increased for all residents in 2012; poor households suffered a decline in incomes. Income security in Singapore declined for the low income between 2010/11 to 2011/12. The lowest 10% are the hardest hit with a decline in wages in 2012. Gross real median wages across the common occupations listed by the Ministry of Manpower fell in all nine occupation categories from 2007 to 2011. 2. Cost of living has increased, eroding the purchasing power of savings. The inflation rates of 5.8% in 2011 and 4.6% in 2012 were higher than the average inflation rate of 1.9% over the last two decades. The inflation rates exceeded the 4% Central Provident Fund (CPF) interest rates on the Special and Retirement Accounts. 3. Inequality has increased. The Gini coefficient for Singapore increased from 0.473 in 2011 to 0.478 in 2012. It is the second highest in the world according to the Human Development Report among "very high human development countries
  16. I am casual smoker myself and I am quite fed-up with all the restriction places they put up as Non smoking area. No smoking at HDB void deck and shelter walkway and housing corridors to whatever place they pleases and don't allowed it. I was like PLEASE!! If the Incumbent of this country don't want every smoker to smoke, then simply just Ban importing of cigarette to our country just like what they did to chewing gum and make smoking an illegal act of activity. Really can't stand them. Wanna create difficulties for the smoker to smoke but yet still wanna hold on to the taxes income revenue they make from the consumer and the cigarette company. I rather they Ban smoking totally in our country and dun be a ku niang lidat and point here & point there and tell the public these are the Non-smoking place. Really can't stand them.

  20. Education Minister Heng Swee Keat hit back swiftly at opposition Workers' Party claims that residents of Punggol East should vote for them to make the PAP "work hard". "PAP has been working hard to come up with various ways to help Singaporeans even when they was no opposition in Parliament," he told reporters at a community event at Tampines Central Temple. Referring to WP chief Low Thia Kiang's rally message on Saturday that people should vote for WP to keep up the pressure on PAP, Minister Heng turned the tables and said, "People should vote for PAP instead to make the WP work hard. "Voters should look at what the various (PAP) MPs have done and contributed in their constituencies and in Parliament," he said. "And I think they will come to the conclusion that they should vote for the PAP to make the Workers' Party work harder for you". He also took pains to remind voters of Punggol East that it's "not about voting more opposition into Parliament". "It's important to understand what this by-election is about. It's about electing the best candidate who can serve the residents of Punggol East," he said, adding that PAP candidate Koh Poh Koon is a "sincere and hardworking man" who understands the needs of residents and will work hard to improve their lives. Minister Heng said after the last General Election in 2011, Singaporeans had given the PAP the mandate to form the government. And the government has been working hard because "it is our duty and honour". He highlighted the recent changes in education as one example of the PAP listening to ground sentiments. "We have been investing in and improving our education system all these years even when there was no opposition in Parliament," he said. Meanwhile, PAP candidate Koh also addressed WP rival Lee Li Lian's claims that as a female voice, she would bring something different into Parliament if she were elected. "Well, I think selecting an MP really is selecting someone to serve the needs of the wide spectrum of the population, so gender shouldn't really play a role," said Dr Koh at a separate walkabout in Punggol East, where he met church-goers outside St Anne's chuch. "All MPs should take care of different segments of the demographic equally well, so I think the selection shouldn't be about gender per se," said the colorectal surgeon, 40. "And I think even at this present moment, we are all trying our best to also take care of different segments: women, children, elderlies and the youths as well". Dr Koh also said he plans to build a new community centre behind the Rivervale Plaza, on top of a wellness centre for the elderly. "We want to put in place more health screening programmes so we can detect diseases earlier, and to do some preventive kind of management for those diseases in the early stages. What we want to do is to leverage on the building of the new CC to in-build some of these programmes and facilities in place," he said.
