  2. Sixteen people were injured following an accident involving a lorry and a car on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Wednesday evening. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said 12 of the injured were sent to Alexandra Hospital while the remaining four were sent to the National University Hospital. SCDF said all 16 injured were men, and confirmed there were no fatalities. It is understood that they were passengers on the lorry. The accident happened just before 9pm near the Jurong Town Hall exit in the direction of the city. According to a Channel NewsAsia viewer, the lorry had overturned. The viewer added that he saw casualties on the road divider. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/16-people-injured-after/849962.html
  3. Post-PSLE book-burning photo inflames netizens Published on Oct 08, 2013 In this picture that was initially published in Shin Min Daily News, a group of children and parents appear to be burning textbooks following the recent PSLE. The photo later made its rounds on Facebook, sparking complaints over the message it sent and the wastage of the books themselves. By Nur Asyiqin Mohamad Salleh And Joanna Seow WHILE many families breathed a sigh of relief after the Primary School Leaving Examination ended last Wednesday, some took celebrations a step further - by setting their books on fire. A photo of a group of children and parents burning what appears to be textbooks has sparked discussion after being shared online. Some concerned netizens accused them of degrading knowledge and education, while others questioned why the books were not given to needy students instead. After the photo was published in Chinese evening paper Shin Min Daily News, it made the rounds on Facebook and forums such as kiasuparents.com. Mrs Kelly Yeo, 40, who saw the original photo on Sunday, said she felt very sad for the children. "It shows how stressed they are and what kind of mindset they have (about) exams. They don't see them as part of the learning journey. "The source of it all is the great emphasis on exam grades in the education system." The homemaker and mother of four boys aged eight to 14 said that after her two older sons sat their PSLE, their books were kept for the younger siblings and members of their extended family. "Some of the books my children have are also passed down from other friends," she added. Another parent, Madam Lim Shu Min, 41, said of the children in the photo: "It's worse that their parents are there encouraging them. Education starts at home. There must be something wrong if children think it's okay to burn their textbooks." Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education Lim Biow Chuan said the photo sent the wrong signal from the parents. "Books are a source of knowledge meant to help and educate a person so whatever the amount of stress one may have I don't think they should burn the books," said Mr Lim, who is also the MP for Mountbatten. His younger daughter sat the PSLE this year and he plans to ask other families if they are interested in her used books. However, Secondary 1 student Jaren Pang, who still remembers the PSLE stress from a year back, admitted he understood the pupils' feelings. "You can be quite happy after your exams, so maybe that's why they burned the textbooks. To celebrate, and because they don't want to see the books ever again," he explained. But he said the furthest his friends went was to tear their books and worksheets. Jaren gave his books away to his neighbour, a Primary 3 student. "It's selfish (to burn them)," he added. "You might not need it anymore but other people do. It will help them." Parents can donate used textbooks to needy students through NTUC FairPrice's annual Share-A-Textbook drive. The start date will be announced in November and people can pass old textbooks to cashiers in any NTUC FairPrice supermarket. The drive accepts school books from any education level. While the Salvation Army does not have a drive for textbooks, it accepts used books of any sort at its donation centres. Although I ever thought of doing that during my school days, never had the guts to do it. Now the students did that with parents' approval!
  4. Today after work on my way to fetch my wife, somewhere along PIE towards tuas just after BKE exit i heard a 'pop' sound and the car wobbled a bit..... then it's ok again. So i fetched her, using PIE / Clementi Ave 6 / AYE / Keppel Rd / ECP / Rochor Rd / Victoria St / Lanvender St and parked, then makan dinner / visit a fren.... 2.5 hours later I drove home but found the car couldnt go straight.... by the time i reached home 25mins later, the passenger side front tyre was flat, only left 45Nm of air pressure instead of the usual 230Nm.... So I drove to my usual late-opening tyre shop at Balestier Rd to patch it. For the past 20 years++, this is the shop which 'saved' me from getting stuck with a flat tyre many times. $10 per fix, maybe $12 after 10pm.... Any bro knows of other late night tyre shop in case we have an emergency and need to fix tyre after 7pm?

  6. A Singaporean businessman led police on a 20km car chase when he tried to flee after failing to bribe them on Sunday. In the 11.30pm incident, the 50-year old suspect, driving a Mercedes Benz, was headed to Singapore when he tried to cut the vehicle queue at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (CIQ), obstructing other vehicles in the process. Two police traffic officers on duty at the CIQ complex then tried to take him to the nearest police station. However, the man then got agitated and refused to cooperate, and offered a RM550 (S$213) bribe to Lance Corporal Awang Mohd Massahdi Awang Abunawas and Lance Corporal Mashri Sedek, said the officers. 12. CNA : Division 3 public officers who are re-employed will continue at the same grade and salary, starting August 1. SINGAPORE: Division 3 public officers who are re-employed will continue at the same grade and salary, starting August 1. The Public Service Division (PSD) said these officers typically perform clerical duties or front-line operational functions. PSD said Division 3 officers join Division 4 officers who have been on these terms since April 1, 2012. PSD said the revision provides greater certainty for lower-wage public officers when they are re-employed. This is one of the outcomes of a PSD review of Public Service re-employment guidelines. Currently, most public officers who are re-employed at the same grade have their salaries adjusted to the mid-point of their salary range. PSD said this is in line with the Tripartite Guidelines on Re-employment of Older Employees. The revised Public Service guidelines will also see more re-employed Division 1 and 2 officers continuing at the same grade and salary. For those whose salaries are to be adjusted, the adjustment is capped at 15 per cent. PSD added that this is in line with private sector market practice after the Retirement and Re-employment Act came into effect in January 2012. PSD's director of Career Development and Management, Mr Tan Hoe Soon, said: "The Public Service values the experience and skills of our mature officers. With the revised terms, we hope to encourage more able officers to continue working after they turn 62 years." PSD said the revised re-employment guidelines will see most public officers re-employed at the same grade and same salary. It added that it will continue to monitor private sector practice and will offer re-employment terms that are reflective of market practice. PSD drew up a set of guidelines to provide a structured framework on the re-employment of officers up to age 65 years in the Public Service. This was done in consultation with public service agencies and public sector unions. The guidelines took effect on July 1, 2011. PSD said nine in 10 retiring public officers have been offered re-employment in the past two years. Responding to the announcement, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said it is happy that PSD has responded positively to its feedback and calls to review re-employment pay policy in the public sector. It welcomed the Civil Service's decision to let re-employed Division 4 employees last year and re-employed Division 3 employees from 1 August 2013 to continue on the same job and the same pay. On PSD's decision to re-employ Division 1 and Division 2 officers on the same grade as far as possible and to retain their pay levels subject to the value of the job, NTUC said this will help "align public sector outcomes with the broad private sector experience". - CNA/fa At least one piece of good news before National Day .......

  15. Hi guys, I have the following problem. Anyone happen to be able advise? I'm driving a 06 colt plus. Recently changed aircon coil and compressor. After that, noticed that my fan (only 1 fan in colt) relay clicks on/off loudly when the compressor cuts in/out. The weird thing is, my fan is already on whenever the aircon is on. I had gone back to the workshop and they told me its like that. Before this, I had never heard the fan relay click so loudly and feequently. Has any bros encountered this? is it possible that there's a wiring problem?
  16. Hi, I had my car making funny noise and my ws diagnose that I need to change the fan belt tensioner and pulley. That solved my problem but now I have another issue. Usually when I am stopping at the red light, my RPM s jumping up and down before it is stabilizing. I also noticed that the rpm also changing when I'm rotating my steering wheel. Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it related with the tensioner that I just changed?
  17. http://ride.asiaone.com/news/general/story...our-bus-geylang AsiaOne | Thursday, Jun 6, 2013 SINGAPORE - A tour bus driver was arrested for running over a pedestrian in Geylang on Wednesday morning in a horrific 'double' accident. According to Chinese evening daily, Shin Min Daily News, the driver did not realise he had run over the man. It was also reported that the front and back wheels of his bus had run over the victim. The driver had also reversed over the man, but was unaware until a cleaner from a nearby condominium alerted him to stop.
  18. OK, here's the story, on new year's day I saw a road rage (I believe) incident on the way home. Retrieved the video from my camera and sent it to the TP (another thing, they could not view the video I sent through email so I burnt it to a DVD and mailed it to them instead) Now the officer in charge is directed by the prosecutor to take my statement, so I'm guessing that they are going ahead with the charge. Any advice on going down to TP HQ and giving my statement?

  21. Hi guys, I am quite the impatient sort, and I have set up a routine to press the Start Engine button and immediately switch the gear to Drive (from Park), then pull seat belt and drive off, all within a few seconds. The problem is... Recently, i was doing this routine more and more quickly, until 1 time when I switched the Gear to Drive (from Park), the car/gearbox keeps vibrating, then I quickly switched back to Park and off the Engine, then I restart Engine and after a while then switch to Drive. Did I do any damage to my car's engine or gearbox?

  23. Hi fellow MCFers, need some advice / feedback from anyone who has installed car roof boxes if there is any problem / restriction encountered going into multi-storey carparks? Seriously considering installing one but think my vehicle height would end up somewhere between 1.9-2.0m depending on how slim the box is. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
