  1. http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne+News/S...5708.html#embed By Gwendolyn Ng AS LIFE expectancy increases up to 85 and beyond, the Government is reviewing the Central Provident Fund (CPF), which remains viable, Minister of State for Manpower and National Development Tan Chuan-Jin said yesterday. Speaking at a forum held at the National University of Singapore, he said: "We are enhancing the CPF system to make CPF savings last longer for members." This is because people underestimate how long they will live and how much they should save for retirement, Brigadier-General (NS) Tan said. Family support continues to play an important role in retirement adequacy. For instance, he said seniors could be supported through the Minimum Sum Topping-Up Scheme where members opt to top up their family members' CPF accounts. About $110 million in top-ups were made for parents and grandparents last year.

  4. Yesterday at around 11.40pm along CTE towards Jurong just before entering into the 1st tunnel before Bukit Timah. Traffic was light and I was travelling at 80+km/h on the 3rd lane, on the 4th lane there was another car slightly infront of me then this fuxking Comfort taxi driver which is on the 2nd lane which is almost level with the other car. Suddenly without any signalling the taxi slowly veer to its left and into my lane and by this time my front bumper was almsot near its rear door so I just blast my horn hoping that it will back out and at the same time I remenber my head was swinging from left to right and trying to manuvoure my car between the taxi and the car to my left and all this while my tumb was still at the horn. But this fuxker never back out and continue eating into my lane and by this time we are side by side and I can see its side mirror is so so close, then I notice my left lane is clear so I just steer into the left lane. ( To the bro who were driving beside me, so Sorry and Thank You, you must have slow down to avoid collision and exited before the tunnel as I didnt notice your car much as my main concentration was on the taxi and my best impression on you is during the time I was almost sandwich by you and the taxi.) After that I cut back infornt of the taxi and this time I just have to do it, wind down my window and show him my solid finger and from my rear view mirror I can see no reaction from the taxi guy. so this time I filter right and slow down to side by side and lower down my passenger window and blast my horn again, wtf the fellow just drive on stone face and expressionless and btw there is 2 more men on board and they are equally expressionless after this whole episode. This morning will be making a call to the taxi company to complain and tell them my suspicion that their driver might be drunk.

  6. Yet another person pulled off this stunt successfully STOMPer Justin's father, who is a cabby, encountered this man who reportedly refused to pay the $10.20 fare after reaching his destination at Normanton Park. According to his father, the man had got on the cab near Boat Quay and appeared to be drunk. When his father made a police report, the police told him that they could not help, said the STOMPer. STOMPer Justin wrote: On May 17, my dad, who is a taxi driver, came back home after an ugly encounter with a drunk passenger. "As shown in the police report, my dad picked up this Caucasian from around Boat Quay. "Upon reaching his destination at Normanton Park, the drunk passenger unreasonably refused to pay the fare. "He then argued, saying 'Why should I pay?' "My dad then told him that he will call the police if he refused to pay the fare and he challenged my dad to 'carry on'. "Two policemen arrived on the scene five minutes after my dad called the police. "However, all they did were to find out what happened and recorded my father's ID and told him to go to the police station the following day to make a report. "They never even tried to look for and question the passenger, who by then was in his house. "After my dad made the police report, they told my dad that they cannot do anything to help also. "Throughout this incident, the police did not even try to contact the passenger. "My dad, who has no details of the passenger, also cannot seek help from his company. "We did not post this story because we want him to pay up. "The issue of the money is small, but, in this case, if even the police cannot do anything, then what are the taxi drivers going to do if this type of incident happens more? "I believe this could happen to any taxi driver in Singapore. "The sad thing here is that the passenger got off so easily, while my poor dad does not even know what else he can do."
  7. recently i posted a news of "Singapore roads rated best in the world" but seems like the replies are mainly negative ones... i remember most of us (i assume) felt proud as Singaporean way back in the 80s/90s when news reported that our airport and seaport were rated one of the best and efficient in the world... today, seems like the Singapore identity has eroded fast so i'd like to hear from you guys... how can we feel proud as Singaporeans again? eg. Singapore annual GDP growth highest in the world Singapore national team qualifies for World Cup 2014 Singapore builds the highest building in the world Singapore scientist discovers cure for cancer, or AIDS Singapore film wins top award in Cannes etc will you feel proud if any of the above scenario happens?

Purchase this article for republication Buy SPH photos Policemen arresting the 16-year-old for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means yesterday morning. He allegedly stabbed the 25-year-old man in his back during a violent scuffle in the back alleyways around Lorong 30 and Lorong 32 Geylang. -- PHOTO: LIANHE WANBAO A HEATED argument which led to a violent scuffle between two males in Geylang yesterday left one of them injured. The Straits Times understands that the pair, aged 25 and 16, got into a fight at about 3.30am in the back alleyways around Lorong 30 and Lorong 32 Geylang. The police said the youngster was subsequently arrested at the scene for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means. Evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that the suspect, who is believed to be Vietnamese, was wielding a knife. He had allegedly stabbed the older man in the left side of his back. The victim, who had collapsed after being stabbed, was taken to Changi General Hospital by ambulance. The suspect remained at the scene to assist in police investigations for more than an hour. Roads were blocked and the police were seen removing evidence from the scene, including the knife that is believed to have been used in the attack. The victim is believed to be in a stable condition, and investigations are ongoing. The latest incident came after 25 people were arrested last week in Geylang for a variety of criminal offences in a multi-agency enforcement operation led by the Bedok Police Division. The individuals, who were rounded up by Aug 14, were suspected drug addicts, gang members, illegal cigarette-peddlers and sellers of illegal sex-enhancement products. Earlier this month, two men were found badly injured in an alley off Lorong 11 Geylang. They were believed to have been in a brawl with other men. One of them later died of head injuries in hospital. Find out how at Sold.sg The new minimum sum will apply to CPF members who turn 55 from July 1 2011 to June 30 2012. Those who can set aside the minimum sum fully in cash can apply to commence monthly payouts of $1,170 when they reach their draw down age. The Medisave minimum sum will also be raised to $36,000 from the previous amount of $34,500. Members will be able to withdraw their Medisave savings in excess of the Medisave minimum sum at or after age 55. The maximum balance a member can have in the Medisave account is fixed at $5,000 above the Medisave mimumum sum. The CPF board said that the revisions, which have been adjusted for inflation, are to ensure that Singaporeans have sufficient savings to meet their healthcare expenses.

  13. Hi guys, I've considered about starting this thread for a long time... In the end, I felt that I should let everyone know about what happen... Not to complaint/blackmail but just to share.. I bought my set of RS3 from hankook (one of their highest range, I believe) in last oct. 3 months after installing them, I realize my car is alittle bumpy when cruising at slow speed (50-80). I thought it was my suspension setup thus I went back to my workshop (I am currently one of the employee there) but it was found out to be my tyres which has bumps on them (3 out of 4). The bumps appear on a single spot on the tyres individually. I called the sales guy and he asked me to drive down and let him have a look. I went down and after inspection, they agreed that they are some issues with my tyres which they cannot determine the cause at that point of time. I waited 2 months for the hankook korean "engineer" to make his trip down and he will decided the next course of action. The final verdict is HANKOOK do not warranty uneven wear on their tyres, even when they are not sure what could be the cause of it. They sort of blame it on my car's hardware but if so, the bumps would be all around the tyres and not just that single spot. PS I used to be on 17" v8rs and it serve me well for 16 months on the exact same car with same h/w. I am utterly disappointed by this and sadly after 5 years of hankook supporter, I will be changing and NEVER going back again.

  18. Jun 10, 2011 Two arrested for bid to rob Burger King One of the accused also believed to have struck earlier at another outlet By Kimberly Spykerman The Burger King outlet at International Plaza in Anson Road. Two Filipino men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in Wednesday's armed robbery attempt, which was thwarted after a crew member ran out to seek help from other shopkeepers. -- ST PHOTO: TERENCE TAN FAST money, not fast food, was on the minds of assailants in two armed robbery attempts at Burger King outlets on Wednesday and in April. Yesterday, police said two Filipino men had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incidents. The duo, acquainted with each other and working here on S-Passes, struck at a branch at International Plaza in Anson Road on Wednesday. One of them is also believed to have been involved in another attempt in April at new underground shopping mall Esplanade Xchange. Both incidents occurred when there were few people around - one outlet was closed for the night and the other had not yet opened for business. Calling the attempts 'bold and audacious', Deputy Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) Adrian Quek said armed robberies at fast-food restaurants here are almost unheard of. Most cases the police have dealt with are linked to convenience stores or money changers. In the most recent case, early on Wednesday morning, one of the suspects, a 32-year-old, allegedly walked into the Burger King outlet at International Plaza and held a knife to a crew member's throat. His face covered with a surgical mask and an eye mask, he demanded that the outlet manager hand over all the money in a safe. The other man, a 30-year-old believed to be his accomplice, waited outside the building. The attempt was thwarted after a third crew member ran out to seek help from other shopkeepers. The assailant threw his knife to the ground and fled. He left a trail of clues behind, including a bicycle chain, which he intended to use to lock the doors of the outlet after committing the crime, and two rolls of duct tape. His identity was traced through closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. He was arrested at Changi Airport later that night when he was heading to the Philippines. He will be charged with attempting to commit armed robbery, punishable by seven years' jail and no less than 18strokes of the cane. His friend was arrested yesterday around the Marina Bay area. Police believe that the older man is likely to have been involved in another armed-robbery attempt at the Burger King outlet in Esplanade Xchange. In the incident in April, which took place at around 1am, he posed as a maintenance worker to gain access to the store. The only person working then was a 35-year-old assistant manager. He held a knife to her throat and demanded that she empty the safe. After he pocketed $7,000, he gagged her and bound her wrists and ankles with duct tape. She called for help after she managed to free herself. DAC Quek said she had not double-checked the man's identity as it was common for contract workers to show up late at night to do maintenance work in the building. The police are still investigating whether there were others involved in that attempt. A spokesman for convenience store chain 7-Eleven, whose staff have been in the news as victims of armed robbery, said all stores have CCTV cameras, alarms linked to Cisco and checks by the latter's roving patrols. 19. think i really need some anger management... anyone got any anger management classes to recommend? saw a few accidents today... one of which was this bike smashed a yellow top MPV taxi at geylang near the junction G7 frog legs there... i was coming from fort road... saw the taxi rear window gone... bike crumpled on the road... 2 helmets lying on the ground... 2 TP bikes in the middle of the road... pretty jammed... but i was not in a hurry... so made a loop at G7 back to CTE... no hurry... time delayed no problem... but the afternoon one... a orange super4 on the AYE ECP before MBS... not really jammed up but 1st lane blocked a tow truck was hoisting uop the bike... so cut left 2nd lane and once passed cut back 1st lane and pick up speed to probably a 100km/h... cause i was in a rush, as usual full of appointments... right at MBS overhead bridge a black lancer was going say probably 80km/h... which is normal cause twisty road... as i was abt 100km/h so i had to brake and i braked late so was behind him pretty close... i stayed close (tailgate lah) to signal to him that i wanna pass... either you speed up or pls change to left lane... gave him a few seconds to realise i am behind him... but he didnt speed up cause got lorry on the 2nd lane, maybe he thought he was driving a 7series or landrover... or maybe a bus... anyways he could cut left but decided to stay on the 1st lane same speed as the lorry... by this time already abt 70km/h... at the point of the road connecting up to the bridge he realised i was tailgating him.. i did not honk or highbeam or anything... images of the Vios kukoo bird on the PIE were still fresh in my mind... THEN THIS KNN (black Lancer with Liverpool stickers) jammed brake... AGAIN KANNA THIS TYPE OF CB.... and i swear he jammed until 60km/h and below cause i checked my speedo... i was not really shock as i was already not tailgating him that close and had ample time to brake also.. but what pissed me off was that HE STEPPED ON THE BRAKE REPEATEDLY to show it was on purpose (NO CARS INFRONT OF HIM)... before he braked on purpose, (as advised here by some bros on my last blue Aveo incident) i was already intending to cut left and go (lorrys behind liao and lane 2 was clear)... but KNN chut stunt... i drove passed very close and saw the passenger (a malay) giggling... rear passenger (looks like a chinese lady) smiling... KNN i knew it... CB driver chut stunt thought he frightened me... so the passengers thinks its funny... i wind down window and %#%&@#^%#^*@%#*%% all came out of my mouth (mother vagina intercourse all came out)... the driver looked at me and looked in front back and forth trying to look at me but i guess he must be afraid his car might swerve... i continuously looked at him and signaled with my hand a tapping brake action... point to myself... and show a 'mati' sign (dying)... the driver looked at me and looked infront again and so when he looked at me i gave a throwing middle finger at him and ^&^%^*#%..... everytime he looked at me i ^#$&^@$#@(*$ him... total a few times and realised got tail back behind... so i gave a last middle finger and drove off... he cut 2nd lane and he disappeared behind me... actually i forgot about the whole incident (very busy hetic afternoon n evening)... just got home 1130pm and remembered this incident so sharing it here... KNN dont know why i will feel a little bad for F^&%^&^king him now... maybe if he f^%^ked me back i wouldnt feel bad... but then if he did that i think low char fight liao... anyways i am really considering if there are classes to attend to learn to better control your temper... hmmmm... best if the teacher chio chio one... or classmates chio one....
  20. heavy rain for whole night. dont know got flood or nt?
  21. Sian, yesterday received a note from my kid's childcare centre that they are going to raise their fee by $50 in August and next January by another $50. This has been almost annually, yearly affair and the explanation is standard lame, "due to the raising cost........" Nowaday, seem like when the Gov raise the child subsidy to childcare centre, the childcare centre will followed suit instantly, so in the end, parents are basically paying the same and no sign of improvement in food quality, lessons and every cents really counts for them. They are still afterall talking about being an educator but still a commercial institution and very profit driven in the end! My kid's centre is not those famous one. Can I ask if the quality of education/food either at PAP or NTUC centre on par with private centre to make a similar comparision? I may have consider to change if my kid is not in K2 this year.
