  1. what do you guys think of this development? i personally feel that it's a change in the positive direction, considering the gravity of the consequence, i.e. death. having said that, it's fair to say that there'll also be those situations where, e.g. the jaywalker's gross negligence may be the primary cause of his/her own death and it has to be then investigated and proven in court. p/s - a car cam is becoming more important - i got to stop procrastinating and get the damn thing installed. ------------------------------------------ Court: No more default fines for negligent drivers 20/05/2014 on mypaper http://news.omy.sg/News/Local-News/story20140520-264376 A SPECIAL court of three judges, led by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, yesterday overthrew a longstanding sentencing practice of imposing fines for causing death by negligent driving. "It is important to signal to other drivers that they must be mindful of the terrible risks they take upon themselves and other road users when they drive when not fit to do so," said CJ Menon. The court made the ruling as it allowed the prosecution's appeal and handed down a four-week jail term to 27-year-old Hue An Li, a sleep-deprived driver who crashed her car into a lorry carrying foreign workers in March last year. The impact caused all nine workers seated in the back to be flung out, killing one on the spot. Last September, Hue, a casino surveillance officer, pleaded guilty to causing death by a negligent act and was fined the maximum $10,000 and banned from driving for five years. The prosecution appealed to the High Court, arguing that she should be jailed for her "gross negligence" in driving after she had not slept in 24 hours. Under the law, the offence carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both. But, generally, the courts have imposed fines. In a 1993 case, former CJ Yong Pung How ruled that if death was caused by a negligent act, a fine would suffice in most cases. In Hue's case, the district judge, explaining why he gave her a fine instead of jail, cited the 2012 case of Ng Jui Chuan, who fell asleep at the wheel and hit an elderly couple in Upper Thomson Road in November 2009. Mr Ng's $9,500 fine was upheld by a High Court judge, who said that driving when one is tired or sleepy is not an offence, but might be one if it had been proved that the tired driver knew he would likely fall asleep at the wheel, and yet drove. But, yesterday, CJ Menon said these cases have to be viewed with caution and that the sentencing precedents were "unreliable". He noted that the law was redrafted in 2008. After this, he said, there was no basis to continue on the premise that when death was caused by negligence, the default sentence is a fine. As for the case of Mr Ng, CJ Menon said this should not be seen as an appropriate sentencing precedent as the remarks of the High Court were in the context of the line between a rash and a negligent act. The appeal, heard yesterday by the Chief Justice, Judge of Appeal Chao Hick Tin and Judicial Commissioner Tan Siong Thye, was the first magistrate's appeal presided over by three judges instead of the usual one judge. 2. Alfa Romeo has revealed plans to spruce up its model offerings. The aggressive manoeuvre will see the Italian automaker produce eight new models by 2018 - in the aim to reach an annual sales target of 400,000 units. Other than the upcoming 4C, it seems that things at Alfa has been relatively quiet. But recently, it presented an ambitious plan to introduce eight new models in the next five years. The new lineup will comprise of compact family cars (C segment), mid-sized sedans (E segment), compact SUVs, and even a full-sized flagship sedan. At this point of time, we couldn't quite imagine how a stately, BMW 7 Series-like Alfa Romeo will be like. Being the passionate, fun-to-drive car manufacturer as we know it, Alfa did not forget to include a "Specialty product" in its plans. The model is widely believed to be the compact sports car, which is a joint project with Mazda to replace the MX-5. Think of it as the Alfa/Mazda version of the 86/BRZ. All these certainly brings up the vibe for Alfa Romeo. But we are keeping our fingers crossed that it wouldn't follow the footsteps of Lotus'.

  5. It seems that the Disco Volante has chose to go for a more British than Italian taste at the recent Geneva Motor Show. Bespoke coach builder Touring has given the highly exclusive automotive artwork a even more unique coat of colours - Green and Gold. This example is produced specifically for a customer, and shown at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show. And for those who haven't come across the moniker, the Disco Volante is essentially the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione that has gone under the knife of Touring - a Milan-based coach builder.

  9. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25775287 A man convicted of murder in the US state of Ohio has been executed using a new, never-before-tried lethal injection combination. Dennis McGuire, 53, was killed on Thursday with a two-drug cocktail, after the maker of the previous execution drug refused to allow its use in capital punishment. McGuire appeared to gasp and snort over the 15 minutes it took him to die. He was sentenced to death for the 1989 rape and murder of Joy Stewart. Stewart was pregnant. In recent years, US states have had increasing difficulty obtaining drugs for use in lethal injections, as their manufacturers have grown unwilling to provide them for that use. Ohio officials elected to use intravenous doses of the sedative midazolam and painkiller hydromorphone for McGuire's execution. Lawyers for McGuire had said the drugs placed him at risk of air hunger, a phenomenon which causes terror as the patient struggles to catch his breath. During the procedure, McGuire gasped several times and his mouth repeatedly opened and closed, according to an Associated Press news agency reporter who witnessed the execution. An Ohio federal judge had rejected a last-minute appeal to delay the execution after McGuire's legal team argued a jury never heard details of his reportedly troubled childhood. McGuire's lawyers alleged he was abused, leading to impaired brain function that made him prone to impulsive actions. Ohio Governor John Kasich also rejected McGuire's efforts to become an organ donor, a legal manoeuvre that previously allowed another death row inmate an eight-month reprieve.

    What

2013 has seen quite a good number of car launches in Singapore so far. Many were important models while a few of them were highly anticipated ones. The Lexus IS, Audi A3 and Porsche Cayman are examples of such. So what's left for 2013 that deserves the extra attention? Alfa Romeo 4C There has been much hype about this little sports car for some time now and it isn't dying anytime soon. Why would it when it has a lacquered carbon tub, 237bhp, plentiful torque, weighs less than a tonne and utilises an unassisted steering? Also included in the package are a mid-mounted engine and a dual-clutch gearbox for maximum efficiency. A 45 AMG Hot hatches. Any true blue enthusiast will hanker after one sometime in his/her life. How about the most powerful one currently in production? The A 45 AMG has 355bhp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a huge specific power output of 178bhp per litre. According to Mercedes Benz, it can also do around 17km/L, which is frankly a miracle. Coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive it is going to be one good weapon for the track. Look out for these two. I'm serious.
  12. Any good installer recommended to install a pioneer double din hu to Alfa Romeo 159? If possible to retain steering controls too. It will be great Website of the pioneer hu http://www.pioneer.com.sg/storefront4/Prod...p;CatId=2,23,28 Thanks in advance!
  13. This year's Geneva Motor Show was a dream for many petrolheads, thanks to the presence of a new McLaren and a new Ferrari hypercar, a new Porsche GT3, a new Alfa and a crazy Lamborghini.. thingy.. I'm sure you guys know Chris Harris from the Drive channel, who was fortunate enough to visit the show. Besides his opinion on some of the show cars at Geneva, je gives us a review of the facelifted E 63 AMG. Oh and did I mention he dislikes the Veneno?
  14. The Alfa Romeo Gloria concept, which will debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, is said to be a preview of the new Giulia sedan that will go on sale in Europe, Asia and the United States in 2015. The Giulia sedan is the replacement of the Alfa 159 whose production ended in late 2011. The Giulia will be offered as a wagon as well. Measuring 4700mm long by 1920mm wide by 1320mm tall with a wheelbase of 2900mm, the Gloria concept is developed by students from the European Design Institute who were asked to create their vision of a sedan that would appeal to customers in North American and Asia. The new Giulia will have the longest wheelbase among models underpinned by Fiat-Chrysler's compact wide architecture. The Giulia will be an integral part of Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne's plan to boost Alfa Romeo's sales to 300,000 units by 2016 from 100,000 in 2012.

  16. The upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C has been captured when undergoing testing in Italy. Lightly camouflaged, the production 4C remains true to the lines of the stunning concept that stole the show at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Compared to the concept, the road-going version has a re-designed hood, bigger mirrors and restyled headlights. It also appears to have wider front and rear windscreens which should improve visibility. The coupe is observed to be sitting very close to the ground. The Alfa Romeo 4C is expected to be powered by the 1750 TBI engine that develops over 200 bhp. Paired to a dual-clutch transmission, the lightweight coupe could go from 0 to 100km/h in less than 5 seconds before achieving a top speed of approximately 250km/h. The 4C is expected to debut at either the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March or the Pebble Beach Concours d
  17. To launch the limited edition Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde SBK, an overtaking stunt was performed at the Silverstone Circuit in Britain involving precision driver Paul Swift. Paul Swift, who is behind the helm of the MiTo, balanced the car on two wheels. Chris "The Stalker" Walker overtook the MiTo on his Kawasaki Ninja by going underneath the precarious-looking MiTo. The limited edition MiTo has special body decal and comes with a red roof and a pair of red side mirrors. It wears a set of 18" alloy wheels complete with red Brembo calipers behind. The SBK will get the same 170bhp 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo like the standard car. The MiTo SBK is built to celebrate Alfa's association with the World Superbike Championship whereby the company is the title sponsor of the series and supplies safety cars as well.
  18. Besides the top three automakers in Germany, perhaps another automaker that could potentially have a wide range of premium automobiles from Europe is Alfa Romeo. Yes, they might not have the financial capacity or wide market reach as the others, but the brand cartainly does not lack carisma. Which is probably why the VW Group has showed such an interest in the firm. It is a real pity that parent company Fiat is not/can't spend enough money and resources to establish Alfa as a premium Italian automaker, like the German big three or Lexus, Infiniti. That does not stop avid motorheads from dreaming. Procaccini has envisioned a 'four door coupe' to rival the CLS, 6 Series GC and A7. Dubbed Orazio Satta, it is named after Orazio Satta Puliga (1910-1974), a respected designer and general vice president (1969
  19. [extract] Back in November last year, Alfa Romeo (which is under the Fiat Group) is challenging, particularly at the Mazda MX-5, the rear wheel drive roadster market segment with a new generation Spider. But now it seems that things are going to change. The MX-5 will receive a sibling but it will not be a Mazda. Mazda Motor Corporation and Fiat Group Automobiles have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development and manufacturing of a new roadster for both companies
  20. Alfa Romeo recently announced that the stylish Giulietta hatchback will soon get a new entry level model. According to the Italian car maker, this new entry level engine will be a detuned version of the 120PS 1.4 litre turbo unit, which is currently the entry level power plant. The lower power engine produces 105PS at 5000 rpm with 206 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. It is speculated that Alfa did not choose the 1.4 litre naturally-aspirated Multiair petrol lump as the entry level engine due to its lower torque output. The new 1.4 litre turbo is expected to bring the Giulietta from 0 to 100km/h in 10.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 185km/h. Coincidentally, the sprint time is the same as the entry level VW Golf 1.2 TSI DSG. The
  21. I am sure most of you are aware of Initial D, the Japanese manga comic/animie and movie about a kid who started out delivering Tofu to a mountainside resort with his father's old Toyota Levin Trueno. The kid in question became so good at delivering Tofu until he could actually beat the best illegal hillside racers without even realizing it. Of course, this was the premise only as the chap eventually became one of those illegal hillside/drift racers and taking on challenges along the way. This had made me want to share my own set of stories about hillside champions. These drivers actually use these hillside roads on a daily basis without a care in the world. Like second nature. They aren't actually racing you up and down the hill slopes but they just want to get to where they are supposed to be and you actually happened to be in the way. I shall tell a few tales about these unsung 'heroes' that ply the windy roads in and around Peninsular Malaysia. One story is my own, the other two told to me by two of my old friends. The first one is that tale where I was headed down from the Genting Highlands in my own Subaru Impreza 1.6ts. This happened sometime in 2005 and I was actually belting it (a little). I remember even outdriving a late 1980s Mitsubishi Colt Turbo which seemed to be pretty highly modded and my car stock with the exception of 17 inch wheels and tyres. The Colt was only fast in a straight line as it only managed to catch up with me when the road started straightening out and when it was close to the Karak toll booths at Gombak. But this wasn't a tale of David vs Goliath or handling over power as behind me was a gargantuan Toyota Landcruiser based Lexus LX470 V8. This SUV was actually keeping up with me. Imagine that, a tall and heavy Toyota Landcruiser keeping up a decently driven small sedan. I was surprised, but I wasn't that surprised as I somehow noted that this was a vehicle used by the staff of the Genting Resort. It was exactly like how a person who basically knew the road like the back of their hands would drive. Even if it was a tall and heavy (albeit powerful) SUV. The second tale of woe (actually the first tale of woe as the first story is about my respect for a well driven SUV) is when a friend of mine told me the tale of his business associate who was driving an Alfa Romeo 146 1.7 at the time. He was actually enjoy a spirited drive on the roads around Kota Tinggi in Johor when out of the blue he was tailed by a very noisy old Ford. Noisy old Fords are nothing new in Malaysia but this wasn't no ordinary noisy old Ford. It was a Ford Econovan with a cheap noisy exhaust. Now the chap driving the Alfa Romeo wasn't going to let some old beat up van beat him. Unfortunately by the time he dropped a cog the van actually overtook him at a hairpin and then started pulling away from the chap in the Alfa. It was actually jaw dropping and eventually the chap basically heard the drone of the cheap exhaust further and further away. The shocking thing according to my friend was that the chap driving the Alfa caught a glimpse of the van driver and he was totally nonchalant about what he was doing. It was like second nature to that chap as he sped away. Amazing what an old van can do sometimes. Now the third tale that I wish to share is one I actually liked hearing. There was once a self proclaimed king of the Ulu Yam 'Ring'. Ulu Yam is the road where car enthusiasts usually use for the sunday drives up Genting Highlands and this chap actually owned a workshop (or was it a tyre shop) somewhere near Ulu Yam and drove one of those Japanese rally specials. As he drove this stretch daily he assumed that he knew every nook and cranny of the roads there. This chap actually believed that he was like the chap in Initial D. But last I heard he was whooped silly at Sepang and he actually crashed one of those all-wheel drive cars at Ulu Yam. Not much was heard from him after that. Of course, fiction follows fact most of the time and I think the stories told in here proves this fact quite well actually. The drivers in Initial D may actually exist in one form or the other. He could be a van driver in Johor or a SUV driver in Genting. But definitely not a rally special in Ulu Yam. - This.....- -....was beaten by this-

  24. Before we get to the details, I have to say that going green does not actually mean having things colored green. But no one told Marangoni who has decided to showcase their new eco-friendly line of tires which are very green in color on a TRC Italia tuned Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1750 Quadrifoglio Verde. The Marangoni/TRC Italia Giulietta has been christened the Giulietta G430 iMove. I suppose the name comes from the fact that the car features a body kit that takes all of its cues from the Ferrari F430 but I have no idea why they also named it the 'iMove' as it isn't a product from Apple not does it multi-task as good as one. I suppose Marangoni requires something new and flashy and the new Giulietta suits the part. The eco-friendly tires must be like more energy saving tires – low rolling resistance thus improving fuel consumption. However, I doubt how much fuel savings you could get from low rolling resistance when the tires and wheels are 19inch in diameter and has a width of 235mm. Those funky green demo tires are 235/35 ZR19 and boast a....get this...fluorescent green pigment that glows in the dark. It is also has a very high silica content which should also help in the grip department. So in order to for the very over-tired Giulietta to move TRC Italia have changed the turbocharger and meddled with the electronics so that the car pushes 286bhp instead of 235bhp. So aside from the steam roller wheels and tires, the car gets KW's fully adjustable suspension setup which lowers the car by 40mm to improve handling. The 51 extra horses get to stop much faster too as the brakes are upgraded to 330mm TAROX discs and calipers. The interior is as green as the tires. The seats and door trims have that same fluorescent green color. But whatever the case, the whole human race has been so used to having normal black/dark gray tires that fluorescent green tires look tacky, or totally weird. Maybe the main point is to attract as much attention as possible and nothing else. If that is the reason, it would totally work. The car is set to appear in this month's Bologna Motor Show and all of the TRC Italia upgrades stated will be on sale by early next year. However, I am seriously hoping that Marangoni does not sell their 'Green' tire in the color green.
