  4. The IPAD is now making its way into BMW and Mercedes Benz. Those large tablet computers have officially made their way into the cars of both manufacturers above with slightly bad (read; ugly) looking docking pods at the headrests of the front seats of their cars. Unlike those LCD/TFT screens you see built in the head rests, these are too large and no way integrated into the car

  7. In recent years, the concept of design cross-overs or collaborations between designers has caught on with car manufacturers in a big way. Thus far, most of the collaborations have been with design houses to release luxury or designer versions of their cars. Mind you, these include all range of cars from the affordable (Levis Chevy; Agnes B Peugeot) to the grossly expensive (Hermes Bugatti). But sometimes luxury isn't quite enough. After all, if you drive an expensive towkay sedan, you are probably a mover and shaker in the industrial or commercial world. Your time is precious and every moment should be spent making millions of dollars more. To fulfill your needs, Brabus has introduced its iBusiness. No, this is not some application you can download off iTunes and no, Brabus is not diversifying into designing iPhone applications. Instead, the iBusiness is a fully Apple-fied Mercedes S600 by Brabus. Liberal doses of Apple's cutting edge products are integrated into the S600 - including iPads, Mac Minis and iPod Touches. Throw in high speed 3G access on the go and it seems that all your business needs are taken care of. Or are they? Considering that Apple products have been slow to jump on the bandwagon for commercial uses and that Windows is still the de facto choice for many multi-nationals, will a couple of iPads really cut it? And wait, if you could afford a chauffeur so that you could make use of the Apple products at the back; wouldn't you already have a Personal Assistant or two? Why would you need business productivity tools integrated into your S600? My take is that Brabus is more intent on creating a mini-heaven for Mac fanboys rather than a serious add-on to the S600 for businessmen. Other than Steve Jobs and his high level executives at Apple, I can't see any businessman shelling out the dough for this one. Brabus should have just called it the iAmARichMacFanBoy or stuck to what they do best - making Mercs go faster.
  8. First, Rolls Royce says you can customise your Rolls on your Iphone. Then comes Toyo tires with an Iphone app about tires. And not to mention the various Ihpone/Ipod touch apps with car adverts as games such as Volkswagen and Audi. Even Red Bull racing has come up with a free app for you to 'race' their F1 car. Apple is totally taking over the motoring world with their apps and the concept of it all. And I love it! Now Volkswagen have become the first to publish a magazine specifically for Apple's new Ipad. Newly named, 'DAS', it stands for Digital Automotive Space and its a new addition to Volkswagen's revamped marketing strategy. No doubt will that help advertise more for Apple, (not like they need any more advertising) but it opens up new avenues for car manufacturers to reach out to consumers. Moreover, I believe Apple and the Volkswagen group have similar branding strategies; simplistic, stylish and sleek. And that blends in perfectly when it comes to apps for the Ipad. You can view the new Volkswagen Touraeg in a full 360 degrees view and go through all the specifications, its only a matter of time before car brochures enter the Apps store.. I've personally gone through stuff on the Ipad and everything looks amazing, so why not add in magazines like these as Apps? With all the games and other mish mash in Apple's App store, car manufacturers like VW have created one that shouts 'Info-tainment' and I think that will do nothing but boost their sales even more. Brilliant move by VW..
  9. Do you agree with him? "those who buy 'useless applications' for Apple's products as 'gullible customers'." http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_525994.html Does he mean we should just "ahem" them?

  12. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20100128/ttc-...ne-0de2eff.html SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Apple chief executive Steve Jobs on Wednesday revealed the culture-changing company's latest must-have device, a touchscreen tablet computer annointed the "iPad." "We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical and revolutionary product," said Jobs, who underwent a liver transplant last year and was making just his second public appearance since September. The long-awaited iPad has a 9.7-inch (24.6-centimeter) color screen and resembles an oversized iPhone. It is 0.5 inches (1.3 cms) thick, weighs 1.5 pounds (0.7 kgs) and comes with 16, 32, or 64 gigabytes of flash memory. The cheapest iPad model, with Wi-Fi connectivity and 16GB of memory, is 499 dollars while the most expensive -- which includes 3G connectivity and 64GB of memory -- costs 829 dollars. "I think it's a home run," said Gartner analyst Van Baker. "It becomes a viable alternative to a netbook and I get the 140,000 applications in the App Store. It is a pretty compelling value." Apple said it would start shipping the iPad, which has a virtual keyboard but can also be hooked up to an external keyboard, within 60 days, making them available worldwide in late March. The 3G version will reach the market in late April. Dressed in his trademark blue jeans, black turtleneck and sneakers, Jobs appeared on stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater to unveil a product that had been the subject of months of speculation. Walking around the stage or sitting on a couch, he showed off iPad features which include browsing the Internet, doing email, working with spreadsheets and charts, playing videogames, listening to music or watching video. Jobs, who appeared thin but healthy, said Apple was launching an online "iBookstore" for the iPad and touted its abilities as an electronic reader of books, newspapers and magazines. "You can have black-and-white, color, video in your books -- whatever the author wants," he said. "We think the iPad is going to make a terrific e-book reader, not just for popular books but for textbooks as well. "Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this functionality with the Kindle," Jobs said. "We are going to stand on their shoulders." The legendary Apple CEO said the iPad has support from five of the biggest publishers in the world and that Apple will "open the floodgates for the rest of the publishers starting this afternoon." Some technology analysts expect the iPad to pose a challenge to other e-readers while a number of publishers are counting on the device to sell digital versions of their publications. The New York Times, Time magazine and National Geographic were among the partners whose content was displayed on the device on Wednesday. Apple said that besides serving as an e-reader, the iPad runs all of the applications available through the Apple App Store for the iPod and iPhone. "If you are thinking about buying a Kindle, you are probably reconsidering that decision. If you are a developer, you have one more reason to develop applications for Apple," said Interpret analyst Michael Gartenberg. Apple simultaneiously released a kit for software developers to tailor applications for the iPad. Jobs said he expected the device to carve out a place between the laptop computer and the smartphone. "Do we have what it takes to establish a third category of products in between a laptop and a smartphone?" he asked. "We think we've done it." Related article: Apple's cult tech inventions Jobs said the iPad is "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smartphone." He said it has about 10 hours of battery life. "I can take a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo and watch video the whole way on one charge," Jobs said. "In general it was a hit," said analyst Rob Enderle of Silicon Valley's Enderle Group, although he expressed some doubt about the inadequate wireless network of telecom carrier AT&T. "I think this is disruptive for a lot of markets," Enderle said. "I have a hard time believing after seeing this that folks are going to want an e-reader that just does plain text and doesn't do format or color," he said. Enderle believed iPads could "do some severe damage" to the gaming market, initially to hand-held gaming systems then eventually to videogame consoles. "I think the iPad is going to do well for them," said NPD Group analyst Ross Rubin. "I wouldn't want to be a competitor in this space at this point in time." Apple shares closed 0.99 percent higher at 207.98 dollars. cool! But what a name... like Apple is selling sanitary pads.... does it comes with wings? LOL
  13. wiffy was using it when suddenly the screen black out. Tried to re-start but no sign of life. Pushed start button, but no white glowing light at all. Trying to DIY fix it first before sending to repair shop (if cannot DIY). What is the likely cause? Already checked the fuse by swopping with another working one, still no sign of life. Any cheap reliable Apple repair shop to recommend? Thanks in advance.
  14. Recently, my iBook has been behaving strangely. The web page seems to take ages to load. Tried clearing all the caches and still no help. Tried using other browser like Camilo, but same thing, regardless of timing of the day/night. What's the probable cause - computer fault, browser fault or ISP? Am on SingNet 1Mpbs connection (so far been very good in the past).

  19. Teens say they were banned from Apple stores for life, company denies it By Kristina Peterson Bay Area News Group Article Launched: 05/29/2008 07:27:16 PM PDT Four Palo Alto teenagers raised in the heart of Silicon Valley got the scare of their lives when they thought they might be banished from all Apple stores worldwide, for life. Their crime, the teens said, was downloading a third-party car racing game onto iPhones at Apple's University Avenue store in Palo Alto last weekend. For that, the two Palo Alto High School students and two recent graduates said they were detained 2 1/2 hours at the store and permanently banned by management. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling denied the teenagers' banishment claim. "They were not banned from that store or any other store," Dowling said. Coincidentally, the company has already announced it will encourage customers to download similar third-party applications onto their iPhones, starting next month. Earlier this week, the four teenagers said they were depressed about not being able to visit their favorite store again. "I can't walk down University Avenue without going in there," said Paly senior Daniel Fukuba, who camped out for the first iPhones last year. Fukuba, who works at a local start-up when not in school, said he and two friends - junior Eric Vicenti and Paly alum Noah Rogers - had some time to kill before meeting up with Paly alum Anjay Patel on Saturday, so they headed over to the Apple store. Showing off the capabilities of the iPhone to Vicenti, Fukuba downloaded a car racing game called "Raging Thunder" - a third-party application created by the Swedish company Polarbits - onto the store phone. "We thought that it was completely harmless," Vicenti said. When an employee stopped by and asked what they were doing, Fukuba told him they were "playing around with the phones." Rogers, who said he worked for the Palo Alto Apple store during the holiday season, said employees are trained to restore the iPhones and computers each night so any downloaded applications would be erased before the next day. "All you have to do is plug it in a laptop to restore it to normal," he said. The employee did not seem alarmed, but a few minutes later a manager came over and asked whether they needed help, Fukuba said. He replied that they were doing fine, and shortly after Patel arrived the group left the store. Patel said he had spent less than five minutes in the store, doing nothing but checking his Facebook page and barely chatting with his friends. "I may have said one or two words to them," he said. But the group had time to talk over the next 2 1/2 hours. "We're halfway down the block when the manager comes running out and tells us to stop right there,"' Fukuba said. The students were ordered to return to the store, where a security guard and the manager called police, Vicenti said. Sgt. Sandra Brown confirmed that the store called the Palo Alto Police Department and an officer responded, but made no arrests. She said the store issued the teens an "admonishment" to leave the store, but police did not force them out. After being lectured by the manager on the dangers of "hacking" into the phones, the teens were photographed and told their pictures were being sent to all Apple stores "so they'd be on the lookout for us," Rogers said. He and Patel were then allowed to leave. Fukuba and Vicenti, who are both under 18, had to wait for their parents to come pick them up. Over the next few days, the boys worried about the ban's repercussions. Fukuba wondered what will happen if he needs to get his computer or iPhone repaired. "I'll have to get a friend to buy stuff for me, like a drug deal," Fukuba said. Later in the week, the teens had heard through a friend that a different manager had told said they were still welcome at Apple, despite what the other employees had said. "I'm not really sure what's going on," Fukuba said. http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_942052...ce=most_viewed

  22. Dec 7, 2007 iPhones taken off Sim Lim shelves after Apple threat By Leung Wai-Leng NEXT Christmas for sure, but not this one - if you hanker for a 'legit' iPhone, and have been checking out Sim Lim Square for it. That is because Apple, the maker of the cellphone popular in the United States and Europe, will only release it in Asia next year. According to retailers, Apple threatened in an e-mail to go after them for illegally 'unlocking' parallel imported iPhones. The phones are unlocked by hacking into their software so that local SIM cards can be used. Sim Lim Square retailers and even some online local sellers have stopped selling the gadget. A retailer in Sim Lim Square said shops there, including his, received a warning e-mail from Apple about a month ago. It threatened legal action should they continue to sell 'hacked' iPhones, which could make them liable for $1,000 per iPhone sold. A Straits Times check with 12 electronics shops and cellphone sellers in Sim Lim Square found none openly selling the gadget. But one retailer on the fourth floor said the sought-after phone could be 'brought in' for interested buyers. Four online cellphone retailers which sold iPhones previously have removed the product from their websites. The Straits Times spoke to two of them. They confirmed that the e-mail was a factor in their decision to stop importing and reselling the product. Said one: 'For a couple of tens of dollars, it's not worth breaching the law for.' iPhones brought in from elsewhere are 'locked', that is, they work only with SIM cards from service providers Apple has partnered with. For example, iPhones in the US work only with SIM cards from US telco AT&T. According to Mr Han Wah Teng, associate director at Keystone Law Corp, hacking the iPhone's software constitutes a breach of the copyright law. Said Mr Han: 'What you pay for is only the licence to use the software. You still need permission from the software owner to reproduce or modify it.' So while selling parallel imported electronics is legal, hacking their software is not. Apple estimates that 250,000 iPhones have been unlocked worldwide. It is currently sold only in the US and Europe, although Apple plans to launch the iPhone in Asia next year. The locking of the phones has been a contentious issue for Apple, with several lawsuits brought against it in the US and Europe. Those suing Apple charge that it is anti-competitive and their consumer rights have been violated. [email protected] http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Story/STIStory_184143.html
