  1. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin.../355127/1/.html SINGAPORE: For the first time, three students have been awarded scholarships to pursue their PhD studies in clean energy overseas. In total, they received 1.5 million Singapore dollars from the National Research Foundation (NRF). Each will receive 500,000 Singapore dollars. They are Darryl Wang, a Nanyang Technological University graduate, Joel Li and Zheng Cheng, both from the National University of Singapore. Two of the recipients will pursue their PhD in the University of New South Wales, Australia, while the third will head to the University of California, Berkeley, US. The three, aged between 22 and 26, were selected from some 40 applicants. They will spend about four years overseas to pursue their studies and when they return, they will serve a four-year bond in the clean energy industry. The monetary award is part of the 25-million-Singapore-dollar programme for clean energy scholarships. The programme was launched last year by the Clean Energy Programme Office. "In the long term, I hope to promote the solar industry in Singapore, to encourage people to adopt solar panels in their homes and roof tops so that one day we'll see a cleaner, greener Singapore...and to encourage students from secondary schools, JCs and universities to embark on research projects in SERIS, the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore, to spark off their interest in this area and hopefully the solar industry in Singapore will grow," said 24-year-old Joel Li, who will pursue his PhD in solar energy at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Joining him is 26-year-old Darryl Wang. Darryl said: "It opens up a new chapter in my life. I'll be able to spend four years overseas and it'll be a new experience. Moreover, I'll be learning from some of the top professors in the world in the solar energy field. So it really means a lot to me. Without this scholarship, I wouldn't have the financial means to pursue my career path in solar energy research at the University of New South Wales." Zheng Cheng, 22, will head to the University of California, Berkeley in the US. The Chinese national, who received a prior scholarship for his graduate studies in Singapore, plans to make Singapore his permanent home. He said: "I come to Singapore under MOE scholarship. With the scholarship, there are a lot of opportunities to develop myself and that's how you see me right now with first-class honours degree. I think in that sense, I'm indebted to Singapore, because you support me and without your support, I may not be what I am right now. Now, there's another scholarship supporting my further studies in the US, so I'm further indebted to this country." Dr Tony Tan, chairman of National Research Foundation, said: "To be able to compete in the global market, Singapore has to differentiate itself by training an elite pool of talent who are well-versed in technology and innovation. This is one of the reasons why we decided to have the NRF Clean Energy PhD Scholarships programme. We know that for a robust clean energy ecosystem to be in place, manpower development is vital." Over the next five years, the National Research Foundation hopes to sponsor more than 100 students to take up post-graduate degrees in the clean energy sector. This industry is a key growth engine for Singapore. It is expected to contribute over one billion Singapore dollars to the country's GDP and create 7,000 jobs by 2015. - CNA/ir

    Stella Awards

It's time again for the annual 'Stella Awards'! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico where she purchased the coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right? That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy. Here are the Stella's for the past year: 7TH PLACE : Kathleen Robertson of Austin , Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son. 6TH PLACE : Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles , California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps. 5TH PLACE : Terrence Dickson, of Bristol , Pennsylvania , who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT, days on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dr y dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish. There are more... 4TH PLACE : Jerry Williams, of Little Rock , Arkansas , garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun. 3RD PLACE : Amber Carson of Lancaster , Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drinks and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument. What ever happened to people being responsible for their own actions? Hang in there; there are only two more Stella's to go... 2ND PLACE : Kara Walton, of Claymont , Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000.... plus dental expenses. Go figure. 1ST PLACE : This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City , Oklahoma , who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down, $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just incase Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.
  4. Singapore man fined for filming oral sex with girlfriend Asia News Network First Posted 11:30:00 01/26/2008 SINGAPORE -- It was a casual fling -- boy meets girl, boy convinces girl to perform oral sex on him and he films the entire act on his digital camera. Now, Mohamad Radzi Mohamad Jasni, has landed himself in trouble for possession of the obscene video clip. He was fined $1,000 but escaped a maximum six-month jail term. A district court on Friday heard how Radzi, 30, and his 16-year-old girlfriend, whom he got to know over the Internet, had gone down to the void deck of Block 893D in the northern Singapore district Woodlands Drive 50 in 2005. He brought the woman, a student, up to the 11th floor where she performed oral sex on him while he filmed the entire act on his digital camera. The clip was downloaded onto his computer but it was later circulated on the Internet before the girl found out about it and reported it to the police. The identity of the person who circulated the video remained unknown. Radzi claimed he had since deleted the clip, which he recorded for his private viewing. In his mitigation, his lawyer, Anand Nalachandran, told the court that there was no commercial motive behind his client's action and he did not intend for anyone else to see the recording. The MediaCorp Raintree Pictures production has been chosen by the Singapore Film Commission (SFC) as Singapore's official entry for the annual awards. It will be submitted for the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The SFC said its board members unanimously chose the movie as it presents a part of the rich and colourful street culture of Singapore. The film will also showcase the country's unique heritage to the international audience. Nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced on 22 January next year, with the awards ceremony to be held on 24 February. The Academy Awards aside, '881' will be screened at the 12th Pusan International Film Festival from 4-12 October this year. The movie, directed by Roystan Tan, is already the highest grossing Asian movie in Singapore to date this year. It grossed over S$3.2 million since its opening at local cinemas on August 8. - CNA/ir
