Friends I need some tips on places to go, stay, eat and more I know there's a Hokkaido thread, but I didn't want to OT there, and if there's another Kyoto thread, please do the needful. So basically, I'm hoping to go in Mid November or thereabout, making using of the public holiday in SG and bring my baby over before the airfares get much higher. In December my little 'un will be two, so it's also a good time to go before I get charge full rates. I'm hoping to spend about 5-6 days there Some basic aims: - see the Autumn leaves - let baby have fun - yeah I know, the memories of this trip may be minimal, but for lao pek, I get to make some memories - put baby in a Jinbei / Kimono / Ninja suit (heh) - enjoy good food - onsen will be nice - ryokan is nice, but even now, many good places are sold out or unavailable My budget is about S$250 a night or so for hotels and they need to be baby friendly, and ideally near attractions or central Kyoto and a train station. I was told to land in Kansai airport and take an express train to Kyoto station direct. So please share tips on food, hotels / ryokans / places of interest especially for babies with shorter attention spans and more, thanks!

On Aug 4, Mr Nabeel took their baby to the National University Hospital (NUH), where Zayn fell seriously ill. "While I was looking at some admission forms, I heard him cry," said Mr Nabeel, 30, who is due to start work as a data centre engineer in October. "About 30 seconds later, he was unconscious and he wasn't breathing." Hospital staff managed to revive Zayn, who was later warded in NUH's intensive care unit. His parents soon learnt that Zayn has a rare genetic disorder, and his best hope for survival may lie with a treatment that costs about $3 million, which they are now trying to raise. On Aug 12, the boy, who is now seven weeks old, was found to have Type 1 spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscles to weaken. It can lead to declining motor functions and such issues as respiratory problems, scoliosis and osteoporosis, said an NUH spokesman. If left untreated, the condition can lead to death by the age of two. In response to queries, NUH said Zayn is currently receiving "multidisciplinary supportive care". Ms Syahirah, a 31-year-old civil servant, said a paediatrician had also noticed that Zayn had poor reflexes and referred them to a specialist. The couple said they were told Zayn's best hope is Zolgensma, a one-time gene therapy that is infused into a baby's veins to help stop the progression of SMA. Zolgensma, approved by the United States' Food and Drug Administration in 2019, is not authorised by Singapore's Health Sciences Authority, but it can be imported under the Special Access Route. Costing almost $2.9 million, the treatment is often touted as the most expensive drug in the world. "We thought, 'how are we supposed to get that amount of money?'" said Ms Syahirah. Last Friday, in a desperate attempt to achieve the "impossible", the couple started a crowdfunding campaign, Walk With Zayn, which has since raised more than $540,000 on charity platform Ray of Hope. Ms Syahirah added that she has also appealed to the authorities to see if Zayn is eligible for the Rare Disease Fund, which provides long-term financial support to those who require high-cost medication for such conditions. The Straits Times reported in January that a two-year-old boy with Type 2 SMA, a less severe form of the condition, was able to stand and walk with support after the public donated $2.87 million for his Zolgensma treatment. Doctors have begun treating Zayn with Risdiplam, an oral medication taken daily. A bottle of Risdiplam, which lasts 64 days, costs more than $15,000. SMA patients on Risdiplam or Spinraza, another drug that is injected into the spinal canal every four months, will have to be on them for life, NUH said. The couple are hoping they can raise the money needed for Zolgensma, with Ms Syahirah noting that their son will still need therapy even after getting the drug. Mr Nabeel said they are working on a deadline, as Zolgensma must be administered before the child turns two. And so after many years and a very long journey I am now finally a father and MCF is a helpful place filled with folks who have the experience in matters not limited to cars but little babes too. So I hope to get some advice on taking car of and brining up my little baby gal 😊 in preparation I’ve gotten triple concertina wires😏, will take her karate and where it hurts on guys for the future but any further tips will be welcome 🙏 xie xie everyone

Wonderful piece of news! At 7.50am on the 14th of August, Jia Jia gave birth to her first pandaaaa cub! Gender is yet to be determined and will be announced at a later date. This is the first time the pair of pandas have successfully mated since attempts at breeding first started in 2015. That's six years of trying! But technically maybe only six times since they only mate once a year. Wah awkward angle ah. Feel so violated for Jia Jia. 😆 Another reason to go River Safari in the near future!

SFA recalls Bellamy's Organic pasta for infants due to ‘excessive levels’ of arsenic The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Tuesday (Nov 3) directed the importer of popular baby food brand Bellamy's Organic to recall its Organic Brown Rice Pasta Stars. This was after “excessive levels” of arsenic were found in the product. The product is targeted at infants from the age of seven months. SFA said that it has detected arsenic in samples of the product, at levels exceeding the maximum limit for arsenic in baby food as stated in the Singapore Food Regulations. A cleaner startled by the sight sought help from taxi drivers who were taking a break at a bus terminal in Kuantan, Malaysia, on Monday (Sept 23). At first, they thought a sanitary pad had caused the toilet to clog up, but they found an umbilical cord when they took a closer look. After fishing out the cord with a wire, the toilet was still choked. That was when they realised there was a baby inside and immediately called the police, Bernama reported. The police found the body of a premature, fully-formed baby in the toilet, which had been closed for upgrading works since Sept 19. CCTV footage revealed that a woman clad in black had entered the female restroom at 6am that day with a luggage bag in tow. Half an hour later, she was seen exiting the toilet wearing a baju kurung. Kuantan police said they are tracking down the woman who is believed to have abandoned the baby at the bus terminal, and appealed to the public for information on her whereabouts. A post-mortem is being carried out on the infant's remains at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. The case has been classified as concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body, which carries the penalty of a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both. According to statistics released by Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Ministry last year, over 900 newborn babies were dumped between 2010 and 2018. A woman aged 55 or older gave birth in March, making her one of Singapore's oldest mothers. The woman, whose exact age was not specified, gave birth to a boy and registered his birth in March, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) told The Sunday Times. This is only the second time a baby was born to a mother aged 55 or older since ICA started keeping birth records in 1989. In August 2016, a woman aged 55 or older gave birth to twin boys, according to ICA records. Dr Khoo Chong Kiat, who delivered the twins, said the woman was 58 when she gave birth. He added that the woman and her husband, who is four or five years older than her, had been trying for a baby for years. Dr Khoo does not remember their occupations. Dr Khoo, who runs CK Khoo Clinic for Women & Laparoscopy, said: "She was very determined to have a child. And she stretched social and medical norms. "Once you hit menopause, there's no need to think of babies anymore but she managed to conceive through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) using her own eggs even after menopause." Dr Khoo said his patient had previously appealed to the health authorities to be allowed to undergo IVF here to no avail. Last month, the Government announced the lifting of the age limit of 45 for women to undergo IVF treatments here and this will take effect from Jan 1. Dr Khoo's patient went to a fertility clinic in Johor Baru even though she had reached menopause at the age of 50. Through hormone replacement therapy and with the help of IVF drugs, her menstrual cycle started again and she managed to produce eggs. Her eggs were mixed with her husband's sperm in a lab and the resulting embryos were implanted in her womb. However, she developed pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure, and the twins had to be delivered by cesarean about three weeks premature. This was a very rare case, Dr Khoo said, adding that the boys are healthy. He cautioned that older mothers face significant health risks, from a higher risk of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes to having a child with a genetic disease. The woman believed to be the world's oldest mother is a 74-year-old Indian national who gave birth to twin girls earlier this month through IVF using donor eggs. Her 82-year-old husband collapsed from a heart attack shortly after the birth, while she remained in intensive care. While the Singaporean couple were elated to finally become parents, they hid the good news from relatives. The mother left a note asking for a woman of the house, a "Sumarti", to care for her child whom she had named Yusof. The mother's note said that the baby was born a day earlier and he had not drunk a drop of milk since his birth, as she was unable to lactate. The mother also wrote that she was unable to bring the child for vaccination, buy milk formula, diapers or anything for her baby, and that she was not capable of raising the child. The woman did not leave her name on the letter, but she seems to know the family as she wrote that she was sure "Sumarti" would be able to provide for the child and give him the love that he deserves. The last part of her letter read, "I want someone to love Yusof. I, as a mother, have failed to care for Yusof. Yusof has been very thirsty and hungry since early morning". Kota Belud police chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said in the 5.30am incident, the woman Sumarti was woken up by her mother who had heard a baby crying outside their house. "Sumarti read the note and checked for injuries on the baby," he said when contacted Monday (July 1). Sumarti brought the baby to the police station and lodged a report at about 8.57am. upt Mohd Zaidi said Sumarti does not know of anyone in the village who had just given birth, and said she is unsure who left the child at her doorstep. He said policemen took the baby for a medical examination and welfare officials were alerted. He said the baby was found to be healthy and has been handed over to welfare officials for further action. It is unclear at this moment whether Sumarti will adopt the baby. The matter was posted on Facebook page Irranun Peace, which saw hundreds of users expressing their best wishes for the child and praising the mother who did not dump her baby and leave him to die. There were also quite a number of people who asked if they could adopt the child.

The incident shows the dangers of giving alcohol to a baby, even in tiny amounts. According to an article on Sin Chew Daily on 12 July 2019, the incident happened in Beijing, China. Many friends and relatives had turned up at the baby's full month celebration, which is traditionally held to bless the child and celebrate the arrival of a new member of the family. The child's paternal grandfather was apparently carrying him when he proposed a toast to his relatives. Things took a rather weird turn when one of the relatives joked that the grandfather couldn't drink if the baby didn't drink. The grandfather fell for the taunt, he grabbed a cup of alcohol and gave the baby a sip, to "save his face". When the child's mother got to know what had happened, she was furious. She grabbed her baby back into her arms. But the damage had been done. The baby became breathless after just 30 minutes. He was rushed to the hospital, but hospital staff were unable to save the little one. Doctors found out that, the cause of the child's death was alcohol poisoning. "Babies cannot drink alcohol, how can you treat a child's life as if it's a joke?" they asked the grandfather. It has been reported that the baby's heartbroken mum was unable to believe what had happened, and she slapped her father-in-law multiple times. Apparently, the mum had been ill-treated by her in-laws previously, because she was unable to conceive even after 3 years of marriage. Things got better only after she was blessed with a baby boy. Fate though had other plans. According to a report by Dr Taylor McCormick (Department of Emergency Medicine, Los Angeles County & University of Southern California Medical Center), babies appear to metabolise alcohol faster than adults. Alcohol affects the central nervous system. Children's bodies absorb alcohol quickly, and this can occur in less than 30 minutes. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning in babies can include difficulty breathing, reduced activity, and seizures. Some studies have also found a risk for low blood sugar. The long-term effects on the baby are unclear. However, breathing difficulties could deprive the baby's brain of oxygen, possibly causing brain damage. In the case of breastfeeding mothers, the CDC recommends that not drinking alcohol is the safest option. Generally, moderate alcohol consumption by a breastfeeding mother (up to 1 standard drink per day) is not known to be harmful to the infant. However, the mother should wait for at least 2 hours after a single drink before breastfeeding her baby. Breast milk will contain alcohol as long as alcohol is still in the mother's bloodstream. Alcohol levels are usually highest in breast milk 30-60 minutes after alcohol is consumed. The length of time alcohol can be detected in breast milk will increase the more alcohol a mother consumes. For example, alcohol from 1 drink can be detected in breast milk for about 2-3 hours, alcohol from 2 drinks can be detected for about 4-5 hours, and alcohol from 3 drinks can be detected for about 6-8 hours, and so on. Exposure to alcohol above moderate levels through breast milk can damage an infant's development, growth, and sleep patterns. High alcohol consumption can also impair a mother's judgment and ability to safely care for her child. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to decreased milk production. Just watching Crash Test Dummies on Discovery Science. Shows how dummies are used to make cars safer. Made me recall seeing some adult front seat passengers in cars with a baby or toddler carried in their lap. They don't realise...(cannot be don't care right?) how dangerous it can be if the car rear ends the vehicle in front or driver e brakes....the child could be launched forward by the momentum and crash into the windscreen. Child seats are also life savers...i suggest parents be more strict with their children when it comes to seat belts. Even for short drive to school less than 2km away, I insist my kids put on their seat belts. You can be the safest driver in the world, but there are many who are reckless or bobo. -

Stomper Sufian shared how his uncle Syed and aunt had an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience when they helped a woman deliver a baby in their car today (Jul 22). Syed had recounted the incident -- which occurred at around 9.40am -- on Facebook, which Sufian alerted Stomp to. In a phone interview with Stomp, Syed said that he had been seeing a doctor at Bukit Panjang and was about to leave, when he and his wife noticed the pregnant woman lying by the side of the road. She was experiencing labour pains. The woman's husband then told Syed that they were waiting for a cab to get them to the hospital. However, they were either ignored or turned down by taxi drivers despite having waited for an hour. Syed then offered to drive the couple to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). In his Facebook post, he described how he tried rushing them to the hospital. Due to the morning traffic, they were unable to reach their destination on time, and the woman ended up giving birth to a girl in Syed's car. "A new life was born inside MY car," wrote Syed in his Facebook post. He also praised his wife for pushing aside her fear of blood and dislike of "slimy substances" to help the woman deliver her baby. Syed told Stomp, "We were so happy and thankful when the baby started to cry," adding that they had been worried for the baby's condition. "The husband didn't know what to say other than thank you, and I told him it's okay as long as both mother and baby were safe." After suffering a nasty fall, the woman was admitted to a hospital. Thats where doctors learned via X-ray that she was carrying a decades-old, 4.4 lbs fetus, the BBC reports. The rare phenomenon, known as a lithopedion, is the result of a fetus dying during pregnancy and becoming calcified. Marco Vargas Lazo, the director of the hospital, called the case extraordinarily rare. The fetus, he said, was large and developed, occupying all of her abdominal cavity. According to reports, there are only 300 known cases of stone babies in the world. The study states that the chance of abnormal pregnancy is one in 11,000, with lithopedion occurring in 1.5% to 1.8% of those cases. After looking at all of the recorded cases, the study found two-thirds of the diagnosis happened in women over the age of 40. The period of fetus retention ranged from four to 60-year-old women. The 92-year-old did not have the slightest idea that she was carrying a calcified fetus for more than half of her life, although she did note that the fetus was nearly seven months along when it died. Doctors say they have sent the woman home and have no plans to remove the fetus due to the womans age and because she said that she has not experienced any pain or discomfort associated to its presence. The first-ever reported case of a lithopedion was found in a 68-year-old woman from Sens, France. It was believed to be around 28 years old.

bought this unbranded fan at $6.50 at the Expo Baby Fair last month ... was sold by a exhibitor who took up a lot of space selling prams and beds and carriers. ... sorry dunno the name liow... they just put a few tens of these fans(in boxes) inside a push trolley. on the poster label they say its " USB FAN" ... but turn out no USB port, only can use batteries. that is ok ... I can still accept. the first night I tried it out and placed 2 batteries inside and it worked. However, when my wife wanted to use it a few days later, it could not work. so I changed the batteries and it worked again. however, only after a few hours the fan stopped again - but we only 'on' it for lesser than 10 mins !! so at night I got home and opened up the battery compartment and was shocked when I saw that the batteries had already melted and water leaked from the batteries !! @^^^@#$^@#!@ jialat man ... how can they sell these kind of stuffs , esp when for baby use ... if nobody watching and the thing burn how ?? I am really surprised that big shop sell such dangerous stuffs.

A paternity test was carried out and it was revealed that the two men had each fathered one of the twins, who are now toddlers. It seems medically impossible, but a woman can give birth to twins with two fathers when she has sex with two different men in the same week. In a process known as heteropaternal superfecundation, the rare incident occurs when a woman releases two eggs during her menstrual cycle and different men fertilise one egg each. It is a more common occurrence when the same dad fertilises two eggs during separate incidences of sex.
