    Strike Back

Anone watching this? Very captivating mini series...
  2. I learnt this the hard way. Packaging of work effort is very important. It's not enough being an excellent worker...it's more important how you package it. I wasted much of my youth (20s to 30 yr old) thinking that so long as I did a good job, I will be recognized. It can't be further from reality. What I learnt and apply constantly (with some level of success) is if you are doing a piece of work....you need to show... 1. What is the business rationale behind your work. What problems are you solving and why it is so important. In short I need to identify business stakeholders. I don't waste my time on work if there is no clear business stakeholders or business stakeholders that matters. 2. What are the various steps you take. Always talking about what are my strategy...what are the tactics taken. Never confuse strategy with tactics. Tactics can fail...but strategy should not. Who comes up with Strategy? Me. Who execute the tactics? My directs or vendors. You get the drift i hope. 3. What is the positive impact to business as a result of the steps you undertaken And I make sure end of the day, my direct boss looks very good as he/she present it to higher up. I heard some of the younger folks complaining about how their managers only know how to talk. Well guys, it's a very important skill if you wanna move up the ladder. I wish someone told me this when I was younger. Ok...just a friday rant
  3. After 30 years...Datsun is Back! Datsun will be global brand: Nissan CEO Ghosn By Chester Dawson -- Nissan CEO says Datsun will be sold globally, but not in the U.S., Japan and other mature markets -- Nissan plans to launch Datsun with total of six new vehicles in three primary markets by 2014 -- Nissan targeting first-time new car buyers in markets where it is catching up with Asian rivals YOKOHAMA, Japan (MarketWatch) -- A day after announcing the return of its Datsun vehicle brand in three key emerging markets, Nissan Motor Co. said Wednesday it would expand the new line of cars globally--but not in developed markets such as the U.S. and U.K. where the brand made its mark 30 years ago. The Japanese car maker said Tuesday it plans to resurrect the brand for small, sporty, inexpensive cars to attract young, first-time buyers in the world's fastest growing markets in developing economies. The once-vaunted brand, which was phased out in the early 1980s, is scheduled to hit the roads of India, Indonesia and Russia in 2014. "Our priority for the moment is Indonesia, India and Russia, but this is a first step. Obviously, the Datsun brand will become global," said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn at a press conference at company headquarters in Yokohama, following the company's initial announcement in Jakarta on Tuesday. But Ghosn added that the vehicles will not be offered in mature markets. "I don't think, frankly, today that we have a plan to launch Datsun in Japan or any developed country...This is for high-growth emerging markets," he said. Nissan said Datsun's ultra low cost vehicles-which the company says will be about half the cost of its current lowest end vehicles that start at $10,000-will target first-time new car buyers, especially those looking to trade up from motorcycles or used cars. Japan's second-largest auto maker by volume after Toyota Motor Corp. aims to tap that growing customer base without tarnishing the value of its existing product lines--the middle-income Nissan brand and upscale Infiniti brand. The company says Datsun will allow it to compete in a segment that makes up from one-third to one-half of all new car sales in India, Indonesia and Russia. It comes as Nissan is racing to catch up in those markets, where its presence has been overshadowed by rivals such as Honda Motor Co., Toyota and Hyundai Motor Co. Nissan said it will debut two Datsun models in each of the three initial markets in 2014 and then expand that product range by an unspecified number within three years. It provided few details on design or specifications of the new vehicles, but said they will be tailored to driver preferences and road conditions in each country. For example, Nissan said only vehicles with engine sizes of 1.2 liters and below will be introduced in Indonesia, while vehicles in Russia will incorporate larger engines. In Mumbai, Datsun unit Program Director Ashwani Gupta said Nissan will seek to price the initial models in India under INR400,000 ($8,000), which will help it compete in the biggest segment of the local market. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s WagonR and Hyundai's i10 and Eon are the major brands in the INR300,000-INR400,000 price range. While executives said Datsun might cross-share platforms and jointly source components with related operations, the cars won't be rebadged versions of the Chinese market Venucia brand made with partner Dongfeng Motor Group Co. or of Dacia vehicles sold by Nissan sister company Renault SA in Central Europe. Instead, Nissan said it has been quietly developing an entirely new line of cars for more than two years that incorporates technological innovations and fresh styling cues. "You should not look for proximity to an existing Japanese or American vehicle," said Vincent Cobee, a corporate vice president in charge of the Datsun brand. "Most customers are extremely smart buyers demanding (cars) for their particular needs. They are tired of receiving what in America you would call a 'hand-me-down' from the Western world." The new Datsun business unit has 15 dedicated employees and about 55 Nissan employees who are indirectly involved in marketing and planning functions, Cobee said. The Datsun name was introduced in Japan in 1932, and hit U.S. streets in 1958. In the 1970s and 1980s, Datsun won over U.S. consumers with small, fuel-efficient models like the B210, and driving enthusiasts with the 280Z. But in a controversial move that still rankles some longtime fans of the brand, the Datsun name was retired in the mid-1980s so Nissan could put its own badge on its cars. Datsun

  5. He's on the run from assault charges in Singapore and his whereabouts are not known. But Robert Stephen Dahlberg, 35, a New Zealander, wants to compensate one of the victims of the Suntec City brawl in April 2010. His lawyer has written to the police about the offer. Dahlberg, an options broker, is offering $20,000 to Mr Paul Louis Liew Kai Ming, 27, who was warded at Singapore General Hospital after the attack. When contacted by The New Paper yesterday, Mr Liew said he does not want the money. The second-year law student in Australia said: "I choose not to accept the compensation because I want him to return to Singapore to face his mistakes. "Because of the severity of his violence, I know his charges cannot be compounded but he can use it in his mitigation and ask for a lighter sentence. "As long as it may have an effect on the justice process, I will not do it. All this is very distressing." The police e-mailed Mr Liew on March 6 to inform him of the compensation offer. Dahlberg's lawyer, Mr Sunil Sudheesan, could not be reached for comment. TNP understands that Mr Liew has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and sees a psychiatrist once a month. http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/...310-332702.html [thumbsup]
  6. Vikram Nair does not intend to engage in debate with TOC SINGAPORE: First it was the socio-political blog, TR Emeritus, now it is The Online Citizen website (TOC). TOC has reported that PAP MP for Sembawang GRC Mr Vikram Nair has floated the possibility of taking legal action against it. It said this arose out of an article written by a TOC contributor, Mr Ng E-jay, on comments Mr Nair made regarding Workers' Party MP Chen Show Mao's suggestion that the government invest in people. According to the TOC posting, Mr Nair has said he does not have any legal plans now. And he hopes not to take legal action but if there is lingering damage he might have to consider it. Mr Nair had said he wants to clear his name. Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, Mr Nair reiterated his position that he does not have any legal plans. Mr Nair also said he does not intend to engage in a debate with the TOC on its website. He said this in response to TOC's invitation to him to write to them and state his point of view, which TOC said will be more than happy to carry in full on its website and it will then respond, if necessary. - CNA/ck

  8. Helping a friend to ask here. He sign on the dotted line with VGS to buy a VW Jetta recently at 117K. The delivery is only in July 2012. He was driving a OPC car all this while and due to change of job, he will need the use of car at most hours. Hence he thought he needed to buy a car due to such needs. However, after some consideration, he realised that he only need to pay certain sum of $$$ to convert his OPC car to a regular car. And the new purchase of Jetta would require him to fork out a monthly installment of around $1300. Now he came to regret it after signing the dotted line as after doing the maths, he feels converting his car to normal plate would be much easier on the pocket in long run. Hence he is thinking of backing out from the deal. His question is, if he backs out of the deal, is he losing only just the deposit? He is fine to lose only that. However he is worried of some other penalty that maybe involved if he backs out of the deal beside losing the deposit. He is not sure as he did not read the terms and conditions in fine print carefully. I feel that probably only the deposit is going to be forfeited, however, in order to be sure of not giving inaccurate advice, would like to seek the opinion of other bros here who may have some experiece in this or heard of other similar cases themselves (of backing out of a deal). You may ask why he did not do his homework and rushed into the deal somewhat rashly. Well, the SE was an attractive lady, which I guessed you would have figure out the reason why!
  9. I'm coming back to SG soon and during my vacation I bought loads of DVDs and BDs as their local HMV store having clearance. As I'm packing now, I realised I had over 14 DVD cases in my lugguage! Will I get into trouble in customs? I know if it's 3 ot 4 I'm safe as I've done it before but 14 boxes!!! Anyone done it before? Got problem? My DVDs and BDs are originals with the country's approved ratings (all non-R rated) crossing my fingers

  13. Now trains are not certain/safe, taxi fares have gone up, COE is expensive, what's left for the pple? Walk, or cycle? If cars population reduces due to high COE, maybe its time to convert one lane for bicycles? Alternatively: Total ban of private cars in CBD (larger radius than current 'CBD', may be extend the CBD radius to places like Newton Station ie one more station away from current CBD boundary?). Build more fringe carparks (for those insist of driving from home, they park at fringe carparks, then use rental bicycle to reach office), and more private buses (for those who stay far from fringe carpark but dont drive). At these fringe carpark, LTA provides cheap rental bicycle (can be electric bikes also) for commuters to exercise the legs and cycle to their work place. For those who die die must drive into CBD, or take cab into CBD: high ERP which LTA can only use to buy more bicycles for rental. In fact revenues from COE/ERP must be substantially channelled to buy these bicycles, or even build sheltered bicycle lanes and parking stations. Of course our $$$ minded govt/LTA must have a different sets of 'Leaders' to seriously consider this system which benefits the pple instead of the elites. We all know how to change the leaders..... but will we, comes next GE? Its up to us.

  15. Another amazing car from Mercedes-Benz! The brand continues the success of the SL family with yet another stunning car. "One the biggest feature of the new generation SL can be found in weight reduction, continuing the legacy of the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. The new SL has been developed with an all-aluminium bodyshell, a first for Mercedes-Benz. The new aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than it would using the steel technology from the predecessor. According to Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz "the result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases, the environmental burden sinks." The final calculations say it all: the new SL 500 with 1785kg is lighter than its predecessor around 125kg and the number grows to around 140 with the SL 350 weighting 1685kg. The new SL generation will be available in two different versions: the SL 500 and the SL 350. The SL 500 is powered by a new 4663cc V8 engine which develops 435 hp. It is around 12 percent more powerful than the previous generation despite some 0.8 litres less displacement. Torque has been increased from 530Nm to 700Nm, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 22 percent. As for the new V6 engine powering the SL 350 it has an output of 306hp and maximum torque of 370Nm. Its fuel consumption has been lowered by almost 30 percent to 6.8 litres per 100km." via: Autoviva (check more info and photos here)

  18. I am nearing my 120k servicing in about 2 weeks time. I have already completed by service package with TC. Now, i am thinking of signing up for another package. I have short listed 2 workshops 1) TC: For the everything in service they have provided...... more or less ok with service except for 1 aircon issue that was not resolved by them and cost me a little $$$ and time 2) J Star program: Cheaper than TC, got free tolling and road side assistance program. And both workshop have outlets in the east. Since I work in Changi South, this is important. I am not that gangho, my car is stock, using it more for point A to point B. Thus, I would prefer to go to a "package" workshop. Just throw to them and have worry free 5-6 months before the next service. Any comments?

  23. By Wang Qian and Guo Rui China Daily/Asia News Network Friday, Sep 30, 2011 WUHAN - A fugitive caught after being on the run for 17 years has once again escaped the police's clutches, this time through a bathroom window. Kang Jianlin fled on Tuesday as he was being escorted from Guangdong province to Henan province to face charges of rape. The 46-year-old had been eating lunch with four police officers at a restaurant in Wuhan, Hubei province, when he asked for his handcuffs to be removed and to use the toilet. After 10 minutes, an officer posted outside a second-floor bathroom looked in and discovered Kang had escaped through a window. He was seen running into a community in Donghu district. Police officers have made great efforts to find the suspect, but no clues have so far been detected, said Pan Feng, publicity director for Wuhan public security bureau. Although there are almost 10 surveillance cameras installed in the community, not one captured the suspect running away, Wuhan Evening Post reported, citing a security guard surnamed Shu as its source. Authorities distributed Kang's photo and a description of what he was wearing to the public on Wednesday. The suspect was described as being 1.68 meters tall, having short-cropped hair and wearing a white T-shirt and gray cropped trousers. He was barefoot at the time of his escape. Residents have been urged to call the 110 emergency hotline if they see him. A warrant for Kang's arrest was issued 17 years ago by the Tanghe county public security bureau in Henan province following allegations he committed statutory rape. Kang evaded detection for almost two decades by working as a casual laborer in Guangdong and as a painter at a toy factory. He was eventually detained in the city of Shantou on Sept 18 and was due to face trial in Tanghe. To guarantee the safety of residents, patrols in the community around where Kang escaped have been stepped up, said authorities. Police added that they believe Kang will not be able to get far because he has no money or identification.
