  1. Police: Carjacker stops to ask TV news crew for directions THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CLEVELAND -- A carjacking suspect stopped during the crime to ask a television news crew for directions, police said. The 19-year-old was arraigned Thursday on a charge of aggravated robbery and ordered held on $50,000 bond. WOIO-TV newswoman Shannon O'Brien and photographer Eric Walls were doing a sidewalk report Monday on bank problems when the passenger in a car asked for directions to a bank. The driver signaled that he was being held at gunpoint, O'Brien told police. The news crew called police and followed the car until officers caught up. Police Lt. Thomas Stacho said the suspect was carrying a loaded handgun. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/112...tml?source=mypi sud hv make the driver buy a garmin first...
  2. MILAN (Reuters) - Italian referee Mauro Bergonzi was sent into hiding by police after thugs tried to attack someone he looked like, the head of the country's referees' association has said. Bergonzi awarded two contentious penalties in Napoli's 3-1 win over Juventus in October. "A dangerous incident happened. A group of people encircled someone they thought was a referee, they tried to abduct him and continually punch him. The only thing was he just looked like the referee," Cesare Gussoni told Friday's La Repubblica newspaper. "He was a bank manager, poor thing, and he managed to reveal this at the end to save himself from more blows. On the advice of the police, the referee was forced to live under protection and went to another province for two weeks." Former leading referee Pierluigi Collina, who now appoints officials for Italian games, has been sent bullets in the post and has been given a police escort as supporters' anger grows following a number of controversial decisions this season. Italy still remembers the 2006 match-fixing scandal, where Juve were demoted and other clubs had points deducted after being found guilty of procuring favorable referees for some matches. Meanwhile, Bulgarian referee Valeri Petrovski is recovering in hospital after being beaten up near his home in Sofia, police said Friday. "I was in the car, waiting for my wife, when two men attacked me with baseball bats and knuckledusters," Petrovski told reporters. The 43-year-old Petrovski, considered one of the country's leading referees, began officiating matches in the Bulgarian top division in 1996. 3. Investor Jim Rogers says Singapore to lose money on US banks INVESTMENT guru Jim Rogers believes that US bank stocks could fall further and predicts that Singapore's state investors will lose money on their multi-billion dollar investments in Citigroup and Merrill Lynch. 'I'm shorting investment banks on Wall Street,' the long-time commodities bull told reporters on Wednesday at a launch event for ABN AMRO certificates linked to commodities. 'It grieves me to see what Singapore is doing. They are going to lose money,' he added, referring to investments by Government of Singapore Investment Corp and Temasek in Citigroup, Switzerland's UBS and Merrill Lynch. Mr Rogers, an American who co-founded the Quantum Fund with billionaire George Soros in the 1970s, now lives in Singapore as he wants to raise his four-year-old daughter in an environment where she can learn Mandarin Chinese. Mr Rogers, who also writes investment books, said Wall Street had to work off 10 years of excesses and predicted that losses linked to risky mortgages will eventually spread to credit card bills, student loans and other debt. -- REUTERS http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_213576.html looks like 10% GST and more gantry soon...
  4. From ST Forum: Feb 22, 2008 Bank's client rebate for car loans: Whose is it? I BOUGHT a car for $55,998 from a parallel importer last Sunday at Turf City. The company also gave me a menu of car loan packages offered by several banks from which to choose, which I did. A staff member from the company submitted the loan application to the bank on my behalf. Three days later, my car loan was approved and the bank informed me that I was entitled to a cash rebate of $5,607. The rebate was one of the incentives linked to the successful application of the car loan. However, I received only part of the rebate - $2,607. When I questioned the parallel importer, I was told that the bulk of the rebate, that is, $3,000, belonged to his company. The $3,000 was the referral fee the importer received from the bank. I am helpless because the bank releases all monies linked to the loan, including the cash rebate, to the parallel importer. He then decides how much of the rebate I am entitled to. The parallel importer claims that he is entitled to part of the cash rebate. He said that the $3,000 he kept as a loan referral fee was the discount he gave to me on the price of the car. However, this was not explained to me at the point of sale. Be that as it may, I would like to ask if a parallel importer can legally draw a portion of the cash rebate entitled to a buyer from the bank for a loan which carries the buyer's name. How can a cash rebate offered to a customer by a bank be taken by a seller? Can the relevant banking and motor trading regulatory bodies explain why this is allowed, or should be?
  5. Hi, Any1 have any idea for bank loan not able to approve? I booked a car for around $37k, full loan 7 years, my gross income - $3k, no credit card debt but used to have but cleared. 6. With all these subprime woes and write-off news from Citigroup, UBS, Merill Lynch, etc. Will you still join bank or investment corporation ? See a lot of job advertisements for banks and investment coporation. Any thoughts ?
  7. While in USA afew weeks ago, a friend wrote me a cheque. His cheque book was issued from Citibank in USA. Can this cheque be honoured in Singapore? Can I bank this US-issued cheque into my account in Citibank (Singapore branch) or local DBS account? Will there be any admin fee? Thanks folks for your inputs.
  8. Any MCFers out there have been in similar situation as shared below and willing to share your experiences: I have left my last job 2 weeks ago. On the last day with the company, I have received a cheque as settlement for the salary outstanding. The cheque was post-dated to 31 Oct 2007 as the company did not have sufficient funds to pay me at that time. Assuming I deposit the cheque on 31 Oct morning for clearing and the amount is reflected in the holding section when I check my account through ATM in the afternoon, may I conclude that the cheque did not bounce and that the funds will be credited to my bank account the next day (01 Nov)? If not, at which stage will the bank consider the cheque as bounced?
  9. I have a current car loan with OxxC bank. As I intend to sell my car, I called up the bank to check the full settlement amount so that I can gauge my selling so that I dont have to top up too much. I have called the bank on 3 separate occasions and was informed that the amount is $x nett. As $x is a reasonable amount, I proceeded to sell my car. The dealer handling my case then told me that the the full settlement amount from the bank is $x + $1700. A check with the bank reveals that this is a penalty on early full settlement. This is unfair as I need to top additional $1.7k now. I mean why cant they just informed of the penalty when I call them up to ask earlier on? Although $1.7k is not very much but I am really unhappy and disappointed with how the bank deals with its customers. This is not transparent at all.
  10. Read the latest job survey of NTU,NUS and SMU students. Most wanted to join the banking sector. A handful of surveyed students are engineering students. Somehow or rather, i wonder if bank job the best job? I'm a graduate majoring in finance and economics. Nope. I do not work in a bank right now. But i am doing something related to banking. Anybody from Back Office,Middle Office and Front Office here? Have you worked in Non Banking sector and after which joined a bank? Is bank job the best job? More often than not, only the front office bankers are earning the big bucks with fat from what i know, UBS Client Advisors do also sell to Corp and V Wealthy Individual (Pockets not enuff!!!!) So how about those back room staff? Are they better off in a bank? Right now, I rather stay at my job rather than join the back office of a bank. To me, the term "Banker" is too general a title to be linked to Big Bucks. Anyone from the banking sectors to share their views??
  11. MUMBAI, Sept 9 - Three Indian state-run banks may be granted full banking licenses by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Indian government may reciprocate by giving the same status to three Singapore banks, the Economic Times said. State-Bank of India , the country's largest commercial bank, Bank of Baroda and Bank of India may be given the qualifying full banking licence, which would enable the banks to open more branches, the paper said. "We are told that SBI, BOI and BOB will be granted qualifying full banking status. That means we will grant the same status to three banks from Singapore to operate in India," a senior finance ministry official was quoted by the paper as saying. DBS Group , Oversea Chinese Banking Corp and United Overseas Bank are among the banks which have applied for a full banking licence in India, the paper said.

  13. Hi Guys, I am earger to do how much i need to topup if i scrap my car now for any reason (not that i want to scrap, just want to know if i am forced to scrap). I am driving a sunny 1.6ex, registered 30/07/2004. I manage to find out the scrap value through the link provided by onemotoring. However, i don't know how to calculate the amount i owe to the bank. I know i can always call the bank to check it out but is there any easy way to calculate? I borrowed 60k at interest rate of 2.2% and monthly installment 825. I bought at bad time, coe was 27k. :( From these information, is it possible to know how much i owe to the bank as of now? Thanks! Regards, longdi
  14. Hi all, Just want to gather some feedback on which banks actually charge owners a sum of $$ if they want to borrow their vehicle log card out temporarily. The usual reason to borrow the log card is when they want to sell their vehicles and/or want to transfer their licence plates to another vehicle. I know OCBC charges S$52 just for owners to borrow the log card out for 1 week ! Multiple selections allowed...so please state which banks charges $$ and if possible..how much. Cheers
