  1. Will budget airline follows suit ??? Yahoo : Step on the Scale — Airline to Weigh Passengers Before Boarding Watch what you eat. Uzbekistan Airways will now weigh baggage and passengers before they board the plane. (Photo: Thinkstock) It’s not uncommon for an airline to weigh baggage before a flight, but one airline is taking things a step further by weighing passengers. In a move that will make you say, “Oh, no they didn’t,” Uzbekistan Airways has announced that it will begin pre-flight weighing of passengers on upcoming trips. Related: Man Sues Airline — Says Fat Seatmate Caused Back Injury After passing through check-in, passengers will be put on what the airline calls a “special weighing machine” near the departure gate zone. According to a statement from the airline, this procedure will take place “in order to determine the average weight of passengers with hand luggage.“ Uzbekistan Airways says weighing passengers will ensure safety. (Photo: Uzbekistan Airways) While this seems like a bold move, the airline says that weighing passengers is purely a safety precaution. According to the statement, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), requires airlines carry out regular preflight procedures to calculate passenger and carry-on weight. For those feeling a little self-conscious, the airline has ensured that the recorded weights will be completely confidential. However, the airline does not address what happens if a flight is overweight Uzbekistan Airlines isn’t the first to put passengers on the scale before boarding. In 2013, Samoa Air began to charge people different fares based on their weight. During this process, passengers are weighed with their baggage at the airport, and pay a fixed price per kilogram for their seat. The airline also introduced the “Samoa XL” row that is designated for passengers who weigh more than 286 pounds (130 kilograms). In addition to the extra cost, these seats are also two inches wider. link : https://sg.news.yahoo.com/step-on-the-scale-airline-to-weigh-passengers-126519860737.html Siao leow, I sure kena pay for my weight ...
  2. There is a growing discomfort across nationalities, even as comfort levels across race and religion appear to have largely remained the same, a survey has found. Some 32.1 per cent of Singaporeans surveyed felt that prejudice based on nationality has become more widespread now compared to five years ago, and this is more so than the increase in other types of prejudices such as race, age or religion. When it came to racial prejudice, 16 per cent felt that it has grown over the past five years, while 46.8 per cent of those surveyed found that it has not changed. These were the findings of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) which surveyed over 4,000 Singaporeans in a large-scale study of race, language and religion here. The results, presented at the IPS Singapore Perspectives 2014 conference on Tuesday, shed some light on the differences between various groups in Singapore and how they have changed over the years. IPS director Janadas Devan, in opening remarks, spoke about riots that had occurred in Singapore between Teochews and Hokkiens, the different Chinese dialect groups, as far back as 1854. “There was a time when they considered themselves different countrymen,” he said. But now, while differences between race, religion and language have generally smoothed over, there appears to be a growing divide between those who are born here, and those who are foreign-born. While 94 per cent of respondents said they were comfortable working for a local-born Chinese, for example, that number fell to 74 per cent for a boss who is a new citizen from China. Those born here were also less comfortable with new citizens in personal and social settings, even if they were of the same race, the survey found. A local-born Chinese had a greater affinity with local-born Malays and Indians, for example, compared to Chinese from China, said Mr Janadas. IPS research fellow Mathew Mathews, who headed the survey, said younger and more educated respondents felt these differences more acutely as they were “more sensitive” and exposed to these differences through the online sphere, for example. Mr Janadas said there was a need to better integrate foreigners into society while retaining the country’s Singaporean identity. The survey also found some other gaps. For example, there were minorities who felt they had been discriminated against in everyday situations. Among Malay respondents, 26.4 per cent said they had been discriminated against at work or for job promotions, because of their race. Among the Indians, 24.2 per cent felt this way. There was also 5.7 per cent of Chinese who said they had been discriminated against in the same situations. Some felt that the Government could do more to address these issues of discrimination. Among the Malay and the Indian respondents, about 40.8 per cent and 33.6 per cent respectively, think the Government should give preferential treatment to minority races. They made up a larger number than those who disagreed with this. But more than half of the Chinese respondents said they disagreed with preferential treatment for minorities. The more educated were also more likely to disagree with preferential treatment. Across university-educated respondents of each race, there were more who did not want preferential treatment given to minorities, than those who did. On the whole, Singaporeans feel there is little racial and religious prejudice here. More than 85 per cent of the 4,000 respondents did not think they were treated differently in public services, for example. The common space is “remarkably free of racial and religious prejudice,” said Mr Janadas. “This not happen overnight...we can't take it for granted." 4. A Briton, who got into a fight at a Halloween party, was jailed for 11/2 years on Thursday. James Daniel Rhodes, 36, was convicted of causing grievous hurt to Mr Ronald Tan, an Australian. Mr Tan, 34, fractured his skull during the fight and died 14 months later. Rhodes was also ordered to pay $32,000 in compensation to Mr Tan's mother. This is for medical expenses, loss of her son's income and transport expenses. Rhodes, a former bank officer, was also found guilty of punching Mr Kevin Michael Hubbard, 31, an interior designer, at the same party. He is appealing against the conviction and sentence and is out on bail of $25,000. During the trial, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sanjiv Vaswani told the court that Rhodes had been invited by a friend to the party on Oct 23, 2010 at The Spinnaker condominium near Newton. There, Rhodes got into an argument with Mr Tan. The Briton was told to leave but traded blows with one of the hosts in the lift. He was brought back to the apartment to change his bloodied shirt for a fresh one but while being ushered out again, he assaulted Mr Hubbard before punching Mr Tan in the face. 9. By Elena Chong A man who stole a total of eight iPads worth $6,824 from the Police Technology Department was jailed for three months on Monday. Yap Bao Fa, 27, was working as a senior support officer in the Singapore Police Force when he stole from the headquarters at Irrawaddy Road . He admitted to three counts of theft involving four iPads between Aug 16 and Sept 10 last year. The remaining four charges were taken into consideration. The court heard that he was authorised to access the secure metal cabinet at the Police Technology Department where new Apple iPads were stored. He had to scan his staff card and key a password into the Key Management System to open the "key press'' to retrieve the keys. When a number of iPads were found missing from the cabinet on Sept 10, a check of the access log records of the "key press'' showed that Yap had accessed it to get the key to the cabinet a number of times. Three iPads worth $2,559 were recovered. He could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined on each charge. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...rtment-20130715

  12. Out-pro date crash with business trip departure date. Can speak to OC and get OC speak to CO for early release? Do they need any form of verification on my trip before they can release me? And, anyone encounter did a medical review one month before ICT? I was told by unit's medical center that my actual Pes Status (temp Pes E now) will be known after 3 months after my medical (July). I questioned back to the person from medical center what will be my Pes status then (from august to November) during in-camp training they cannot give me an answer. Seriously, the f--king SAF is a major screw up. My medical review was actually on March this year but due to their system fault and all slot's taken up, i had to wait for an SAF100 for medical review to be sent to me which scheduled this July instead which causes SO f--king many problems with my Pes Status, My business trip crashes with out-pro date etc. I am so pissed off right now.
  13. There were many more dealers than buyers yesterday at used car shops, as the final weekend before loan restrictions kick in ended with a whisper. About 15 second-hand car dealers told The Straits Times that this was how it had been for several weeks, after the "panic buying" that came right after the Government's 60-day loan reprieve on certain used cars began on April 6. "There was a frenzy the first weekend after the extension was announced," said Mr Jeremy Teo, 42, a car salesman at Henly Enterprises in Ubi. He said his dealership sold almost all of its 80 eligible used cars within two weeks. The reprieve, which ends tomorrow, was granted by the Monetary Authority of Singapore after an outcry from used car dealers. It applied only to roughly 7,000 used cars acquired before the curbs kicked in on Feb 26. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...e-ends-20130603

  19. Just passed by an accident at about 4 pm at the junction between Holland road and Empress road. Motorcycle and i think a Volvo got into an accident , tent was just infront of the photo, had the video on my car cam but not good to post it. Drivers and motorcyclist need to be more careful on the road as life on motorcycle is fragile, i had my share of accidents last time ,especially those driving cars try to keep a better lookout to prevent accidents.
  20. Would like to heard from driver who have use 15W40 engine oil in their car, what their feedback. recently purchase a voucher from Deal.com.sg and purchase car servicing from one of the workshop in sin ming. the engine oil that they use at pump out from oil barrel into a 4litre container, i understand that this will save them cost but the problem was they are replacing 15W40 [Eneos] into my car which all the while i am using 5W40. i check with the staff and upon question, the voucher entilted only to 15W40 engine oil, i will have to top-up to get 5W40 engine oil. after hearing the amount to top-up, i find it not worth therefore allowing them to replace with the 15W40 engine oil. my car is about 160,000km in mileage. therefore not too particular but would like to heard from others on this. thanks for sharing
