  3. Another amazing car from Mercedes-Benz! The brand continues the success of the SL family with yet another stunning car. "One the biggest feature of the new generation SL can be found in weight reduction, continuing the legacy of the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. The new SL has been developed with an all-aluminium bodyshell, a first for Mercedes-Benz. The new aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than it would using the steel technology from the predecessor. According to Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz "the result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases, the environmental burden sinks." The final calculations say it all: the new SL 500 with 1785kg is lighter than its predecessor around 125kg and the number grows to around 140 with the SL 350 weighting 1685kg. The new SL generation will be available in two different versions: the SL 500 and the SL 350. The SL 500 is powered by a new 4663cc V8 engine which develops 435 hp. It is around 12 percent more powerful than the previous generation despite some 0.8 litres less displacement. Torque has been increased from 530Nm to 700Nm, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 22 percent. As for the new V6 engine powering the SL 350 it has an output of 306hp and maximum torque of 370Nm. Its fuel consumption has been lowered by almost 30 percent to 6.8 litres per 100km." via: Autoviva (check more info and photos here)
  4. German car magazine Auto Bild is reporting in its latest issue that Mercedes-Benz is working on a superlight E-Class. The lightweight edition of the E-Class will be made of carbon fiber (with more rigidity than steel) and weigh in at around 1,300 kg (2860 lbs) - which will be 350 kg (770 lbs) less than the standard model. The superlight E-Class will also see a new design, influenced by the CLS, with engineers free to go with features such as gullwing doors or no B-pillar given the rigidity of the carbon structure. The model also seems intended to lower Mercedes-Benz's fleet fuel-economy and CO2 quotients because the automaker is considering both hydrogen fuel-cell and petrol-hybrid drivetrains for the lightweight E-Class. The superlight E-Class is due in 2015. Source: Auto Bild (German)

  6. Young Malaysian women are apparently not money-minded and materialistic. When it comes to finding a life partner, many female participants at a recent youth forum said they would rather have someone with five 'As' (Affection, Appreciation, Ambition, Acceptance and Attitude) instead of the so-called five 'Bs' (Billions, Bungalow, Benz, Brain and Body). In the long run, I'm sure they would eat their words. What I can infer is that, these women wouldn't mind having an ambitious partner who maybe isn't stable job-wise and monetarily-wise but appreciates them? Surely, they can't be completely not money-minded? Of course, I won't expect my partner to be a billionaire residing in a bungalow driving a Benz, but he must have a stable income at the least? If not, how can I enjoy a random food feast, being the foodie that I am!? In my opinion, it's relatively easy to find someone to give you affection and to appreciate you as you are, especially in the case whereby the female is the sole breadwinner and the guy isn't exactly "brainy" enough to get a high-paying job. Because he's relying on you, and he may have a good heart but where's the stability? To me, it's expected of the guy to accept you as you are and have the characteristics you're looking for in a partner, so that shouldn't be a fixed criteria for a partner. It's almost the same as making the statement "I'm looking to find a guy who isn't abusive." Anyone in their right mind wouldn't want someone like that! I guess in Singapore, it's hard not to be money-minded, especially with regards to the future. I, for one, would mind if my partner gets a lower salary than I do, because of the generalized stereotype that the man is supposed to be the one who "looks after the house." I wouldn't want to be in the compromising position whereby I have to pay for almost everything. And I'd like to think that people do use their materialistic products to show off how well they are doing, which explains why branded goods are more favoured. But that doesn't make it a necessity, most of us can do without these items anyway. http://starblog.stomp.com.sg/post.php?blogid=2252

  12. Thinking of buying a used R350. Anyone has any advice on this car? I am looking for a continental car that can sit comfortably for 6-7 persons. I rule out X5 and XC90 simply because the third row is too cramp. Q7 is a tad too big and intimidating and I reckon parking is a problem. Any known issue or problem for the R class that I should take note? Gearbox ok as it is 7G tronic? I am looking at these two units by the way..Kindly share your view if any. Thanks! http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.ph...589&DL=2080 http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.ph...030&DL=1033
  13. I was driving from Changi towards west along PIE this evening. Around 745pm, i was at the right lane near Macpherson. I saw a Benz Van coming at me from behind pretty fast, so i slow down and hope he gets the picture that his van can not come into right lane; and will switch back to the next lane. Well, he didnt switch lane and tailgate me for a good 10 second if not wrong (I slow down to about 70km/h), then he switched lane speed up and over took other car on other lane, and switch into right lane again in front of me. I then speed up to around 90-95km, as i approached him, he slow down till about 80-85km, then switched back to next lane. For a good distance till Thomson flyover, he switched lane at least 3 times without signal. I quickly slow down a little on the right lane (car behind me is at least 50m-70m away) and turn on my iphone video mode. I then speed up around 85km to pace the van, I am 1 car length beside him while i was on the right lane. Some where just before CJC, he came into right lane again! travelled for a good 11-12 sec distance at around 90km (his van max speed at 70km/h), and switched lane without signal again. I recorded the whole process (i was 2 hands on the steering wheel, with left hand holding the phone), Just as i switched lane and exit to Adam Road. saw him switch to right lane again. Now, how i report that to TP with the video? (I always signal to change lane regardless is there any car behind me not. Thanks to the strict training I got from NS driving course. :) Any AFV V200 driver here? I drove that in 3SADA during my NS.

  15. http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/Story...119-259117.html Mercedes-Benz is S'pore's top car model European luxury marques are increasing market share here. -BT Fri, Jan 21, 2011 The Business Times By Samuel Ee THE Mercedes-Benz E-Class luxury sedan was Singapore's most popular model in 2010 - the first time that a premium model has been No 1 here. The Mercedes-Benz brand was Singapore's top make in both 1995 and 1996 - when the COE quota was similarly small and the economy booming. But this is the very first time that a luxury model has displaced the usual Japanese or Korean volume model among authorised distributors. In 2010, the quota for certificates of entitlement (COE) plunged by almost 40 per cent, sending COE prices to 15-year highs. This accelerated the E-Class mid-sized executive car up the charts. Along with a strengthening economy and strong demand for a relatively new model, it is clear why the core model for the brand with the three-pointed star could do so well. Read also: BMW is S'pore's top luxury brand Tallying up all its variants - starting with the entry-level E200, currently priced at $262,888 - Mercedes-Benz registered a total of 1,991 units of the E-Class last year (among authorised distributors). Last year's runner-up was the Toyota Corolla Altis, a familiar nameplate in the annual Top 3. Authorised distributor Borneo Motors Singapore put 1,894 units of this 1,600 cc workhorse on the road in 2010. In 2009, the Corolla Altis was also No 2. Also unchanged for the second straight year was the Kia Cerato at No 3. This pretty Korean sedan chalked up 1,688 units for agent Cycle & Carriage in 2010. But No 4 was another 'premium' surprise - the BMW 5 Series. This sleek executive express also sped up the sales charts in 2010 after a glitzy launch in May, with a total of 1,591 units registered in only slightly over half a year. At No 5 was the previous year's top model - the Hyundai Avante. The Korean sedan which had benefited from low COE premiums in 2009 slowed down to just 1,424 units in 2010. The rest of the Top 10 is rounded off by the usual mass-market Japanese models (see table). One notable exception is the Volkswagen Jetta. It comes in at No 7 with 936 units. The German mid-range brand posted the biggest gain in market share last year, with total VW sales jumping 40.5 per to 3,401 passenger cars (among authorised distributors). VW perhaps epitomises the changing fortunes of the car brands in Singapore. In 2009, all the Top 10 models were either Japanese or Korean cars - there was not a single European model. But in 2010, there were three, with two of them from luxury marques. For 2011, it looks like the Europeans will continue to increase their market share at the expense of the Japanese and Koreans. The new COE quota for the next six months, starting from February, will contract by 3 per cent, which means that COE premiums are unlikely to fall much from current levels. The European makes also have the forex and technological edge. Their euro-denominated models come with high-tech powertrains that combine performance with low fuel consumption. One example is the Mercedes-Benz C180 Kompressor. This compact luxury sedan has a 1.6-litre engine, which slots it neatly into COE Category A. This category's COE premium is currently $30,000 less than Cat B, the traditional COE category for luxury models. As a result, the $166,888 C180 has a strong price advantage over competitors in the same segment which have to secure a more expensive Cat B COE. With so many factors favouring the Europeans, it is difficult to foresee the Japanese and Korean carmakers dominating the sales chart in 2011.

  17. Now that Jaguar is safely housed under the umbrella of Tata Motors, the British marque is planning a major expansion of its current lineup. In addition to a rumored BMW 3 Series fighter, Jaguar is looking to take aim at the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class coupe with a stately two-door based off of the new-for-2011 XJ sedan. According to Automobile magazine, sources within Jaguar say that the XJ coupe will feature a pillarless greenhouse design, glass roof and will use separate sheetmetal from the sedan it's based on. Adrian Hallmark, brand manager for Jaguar in Europe, says that the two-door XJ will be "much more dynamic and emotional than a Mercedes CL." Hallmark also told Automobile that Jaguar is considering a whole slew of new models, including an XF wagon, high-end sports car based on the C-X75 concept, a crossover based on the Range Rover Evoque and even a possible shooting break version of either the next-generation XF or entry-level 3 Series competitor. 21. AMG has been producing racing versions of Mercedes-Benz cars and high performance street machines for over four decades. That tradition continues with the unveiling today in Mexico of a GT3 spec version of the new SLS gullwing coupe. Sales will start this fall and AMG hopes to have the homologation process completed in time for the 2011 race season. The GT3 SLS will use the same 6.3-liter V8 as the road car, but the FIA will determine its final output for racing. The aerodynamic enhancements are the big news here, with changes to the bodywork evident all over. The front end features a deep carbon fiber splitter that's only bested by the large rear wing out back. The hood sports a large cooling event and there are air intakes for brake cooling in the side skirts and cooling vents in the fenders behind the front wheels as well. Other race-spec features include a smooth underbody, rear diffuser, central-locking wheels and fuel filler pipes in the C-pillar. Given the racing heritage of the original SL from the 1950s, seeing a gullwing back racing on the track will be the best kind of d
  22. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the 2005 and 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for a wiring harness issue that could prevent the airbags from deploying in a collision. There are about 100,000 vehicles that could be affected if a recall notice is issued, and NHTSA says that it's received four complains of failures of the wiring harness, though there have been no reported injuries as a result of the issue. Mercedes spokesman Robert Moran reportedly told Bloomberg that the condition presents itself when drivers telescope the steering wheel all the way out and and as high as it can go. Under those conditions the potentially defective harness could pull out of the connector block, causing an open-circuit condition in the driver's airbag circuits. If the harness disconnects from the connector, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate and one of two diagnostic fault codes will point to the problem. The German automaker sent out a TSB back in December 2005 to address the issue, which is fixed with what NHTSA calls a "substantially longer" wiring harness. The TSBs, which have been updated over time, covers MY 2003-2009 E-Class and the MY 2006-2010 CLS, though only the 2005 and 2006 E-Class is currently being investigated. Hit the jump to read over the NHTSA summery of the investigation. [source: Bloomberg]
