  1. another best for Singapore http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC11...st-in-the-world Singapore's roads rated the best in the world 03:04 PM Aug 18, 2011 SINGAPORE - The Republic's road network has been rated the best in the world, in both design and safety. It received the recognition at the annual Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) awards ceremony held in St Louis, Missouri, on Monday. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) was presented with the Edmund R Ricker Transportation Safety Council Award for its efforts in improving safety for road users in Singapore. Only one award is given out in the individual and organisation categories each year. Past winners of this prestigious international award include the World Bank, and city administrations in America and Australia for their efforts in promoting road safety.
  2. Yahoo : Singapore is third best ‘global city’, others have ‘long way to go’, property expert says KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — Malaysia’s capital and other cities behind Singapore in a “global city” ranking require significant improvement in a variety of areas before they are competitive against the city-state, world property consultancy firm Knight Frank said today. Its Asia-Pacific head researcher Nicholas Holt said aspiring competitors needed to be more transparent and encourage free market practices in order to keep up with Singapore, which ranked third in Knight Frank’s Global Cities 2016 report. “Singapore, it’s the transparency, it’s the ease of doing business, to set up a business, it comes in at the top in terms of setting up a business. “When you come into Malaysia, there’s a lot of red tape, uncertainty, thinking, ‘Is something going to happen?’ “So I think there’s quite a long way to go,” Holt said after launching Knight Frank’s Wealth 2016 report. He added that Malaysia needed to be more open to business ventures from abroad, a trait other major cities like Singapore, London and New York, have embodied and which enabled them to be successful. “So for KL to truly become an international and global city it would have to have lots of reform and it has to really capture demand from corporates and investors globally ahead from places like Singapore which would be a tough task,” Holt said. But Holt also noted that Kuala Lumpur was making various improvements to its infrastructure, such as the light rail transit (LRT) extension and the new mass rapid transit (MRT), which will get it closer to becoming a “global city”. Knight Frank later clarified that Holt was speaking on a global level and had not meant to comment specifically about Malaysia. The top two spots on Knight Frank’s Global Cities 2016 went to London and New York respectively. Hong Kong coming in fourth, followed by Dubai on fifth. Malaysia was not listed in the report which only ranks the top 10 “global cities” in the world. He added that Singapore also benefited when the former British colony returned to China as a special administrative region, creating an opening for the city-state to position itself as the preferred financial services centre in the region. "And then in 1997 Hong Kong went back to the Chinese; that was the opportunity for Singapore really to push their banking and finance and their wealth management centre outside of Hong Kong within Asia and now when people say 'Hong Kong or Singapore' they go with Singapore," he said. He added that instead of competing with Singapore, Malaysia could instead aim to complement the neighbouring country by focusing on other aspects like Islamic finance. According to the Knight Frank Global Cities website, the cities selected "explored the future of the built environment, and is intended to help investors, occupiers and city planners with their future business strategy." 3. Hi all, Due to lifestyle/commitment change, my traveling distance per day has increased to at least 55 to 60km in the weekdays. Currently driving a Hyundai Avante left around 1 year to scrap. It's give me about 11+km/l depending on traffic, recently like getting worst. I know now alot of new cars with better lower cc engines can give up to 20km/l paper spec! Choon boh? Hybrid got so good? I need advise from the forum gurus. Which new car now can really give me good fuel comsumption but still driving at least like my avante? basically I'm looking at this requirements: - Real life FC better thatn 16km/l (not paper spec, switch off AC, controlling pedal carefully those type. I want realistic normal driving in SG) - Still Driving a like 1.6 (Avante power actually not bad) - Size around like Avante (sedan or hatch) - Price around 100k +/- 10k - don't need other bell and whistle. Such cars exist? How is Hybrid but don't have such price right? I try to find same topic but dun have. Hope the good bros here can advise. Thanks in advance.

  6. Thought I'd start this thread seeing the no of laptops i hv used over the years, numbering to abt 20. Used to be a desktop junkie until lappies gained the same power with the downsizing of the various parts. Here goes: Personal best of all time: Lenovo Thinkpad Damn good workhorse. Given to me by company T410. Got the one with the i5 chip and had the basics in it, and all. Excellent and bulletproof in design and the kb rocks. Upped the ram to 16GB and to a 500SSD, and it really serves me well. Have had it for close to 3 yrs now, and still my all time fav. Modular and can change abt every damn thing. It has kept it's reputation as a good corporate laptop and the battery life is supreme! Oni thing is damn heavy.... Next best: Toshiba Portege m900 Another good one that I use at home. Have had it for 5 yrs now and with minor tweaks like upping the RAM and the SSD replacement, still doing it's job and does the job. Good graphic capability and overall handles and multitasks seamlessly. Keyboard a little close for liking and tht gives it the no 2 spot cf the Thinkpad Current prototype testing: Macbook pro 2009 Solid and lives it's name in the overall handling of graphics tasks. On bootcamp and switch between Win7 and Mac OSx seamlessly. Again, the SSD/RAM change gives it that extra oomph where boot up times are 15s and shutdown times, 5s. Comfy feel overall and may take over the thinkpad later with more robust testing and the like. Had a few others, Acer, Hp, ASUS, all use n throw one side or donate to charity. The above 3 by far tops for me. Do share your experience with the various laptops you have owned and the MODs given to it.

  15. A heady year with many new policies. Amongst the many new laws, the VES and the diesel tax will have the greatest impact on our local car buyers. Last year saw the top ten list filled with predictable best sellers from Honda, Toyota and Mercedes. Will that change? IMO, the best sellers this year will be quite similar, as dealer will still have existing stock of the top sellers, and even though the surcharge goes up, it only occurs next year in Jan 2018. So we should see a small rush for them, and perhaps even a rush for the diesel based best sellers like the BMW 116d and 216d. As a reference, I have included the best sellers for 2016: Top ten for 2015: http://business.asiaone.com/news/toyota-surges-no-1-brand-singapore Top ten for 2014: http://www.carbuyer.com.sg/features/399-can-you-guess-singapore-s-best-selling-car http://focus2move.com/mercedes-e-class-best-selling-car-singapore/ http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/article.php?AID=10795 Top ten for 2013: http://www.lifestyleasia.com/380529/top-selling-car-in-singapore-2013/

  17. Hi friends! Since the COE dropped i guess it's time to replace my family car! i have 2 kids and 1 helper - all quite big sized, hence not looking for cars like Attrage.. Wanted the Impreza 1.6 but Subaru stopped bringing this in to SG :( My budget is around 75-90k and these are my research results: Sylphy - nice looking, good interior, but seems like a lot of problems ie gearbox issues and bad fc (from what i read here).. or can anyone say otherwise? Altis - the base model is 95k which is very ex..., but reliable and spacious Sienta - seriously considering this. K3 - Spacious, cheaper than the rest, but bad fc and this is a very old model.. Eltantra - not many comments about this car, seems spacious too. Any opinions from the experts here?

  20. My bottle of cooking oil states best before date on 3 Sep 2015. As there is no expiry date, I still continue using as there is still half bottle left. How are the consequences?
  21. Today's Straits Times got one article mentioning the above statement. They even did a test on Impreza and WRX with different grades and brands of petrol for best power output. With different engine speed (rmp) on both cars, it shows that 95-octane has the best result! Of cos there are many other factors not put into consideration. However, I think this is a good indicator for some of us.
