  6. While the tax hike on diesel has affected businesses and cabbies, the move will help discourage usage of the fuel and create a better and healthier living environment, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng. He noted that the land transport sector is the second-largest source of emissions in Singapore, and this has to be addressed as the land transport system expands. To do so, the Government is also promoting commuting modes such as car-sharing, trains and personal mobility devices, managing vehicle growth and usage, and encouraging the adoption of cleaner and more carbon-efficient vehicles, he said. MPs Lee Bee Wah (Nee Soon GRC) and Gan Thiam Poh (Ang Mo Kio GRC) yesterday raised concerns about the hike, as they called for more support to mitigate the impact on cabbies and businesses. Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat had announced a doubling in excise duty on diesel fuel from 10 cents a litre to 20 cents last week. This took effect from Feb 18. Yesterday, Ms Lee pointed out that no lead time or grace period was given, and many service providers which use diesel vehicles have lost money overnight. She called for ComfortDelGro, the largest taxi operator here, to at least absorb part of the diesel tax hike. Meanwhile, Mr Gan said certain heavy machinery and special purpose vehicles have no diesel alternatives in the market, and appealed for firms and operators using them to be exempted from the hike. In his speech, Mr Baey listed several ways in which the Government is helping to cushion the impact of the diesel tax increase. Related Story What's behind diesel tax increase? Related Story Singapore Budget 2019: Diesel duty at pumps doubles to 20 cents per litre Related Story Diesel duty hike will filter down to some consumers: Industry The annual special tax for taxis has been reduced by $850, and Mr Baey said he was glad that all taxi operators have pledged to pass on the entire savings to cabbies in the form of rental reductions and, for some, Medisave top-ups. ComfortDelGro cabbies driving a diesel taxi that is five years or older can get a $100 voucher if they convert to a hybrid taxi by the end of next month, he added, urging other taxi operators to offer similar incentives and more non-diesel options. On concerns from parents about school bus fares, Mr Baey said the Government is helping operators through a new road tax rebate scheme for all diesel buses, for a three-year period from August. All diesel school buses, diesel private-hire buses and excursion buses ferrying schoolchildren will also get an additional cash rebate for three years from August. Mr Ang Hin Kee (Ang Mo Kio GRC) said after the sitting that he hoped more taxi firms would take up Mr Baey's call to support cabbies. But the National Taxi Association's executive adviser added that rebates like the $100 voucher from ComfortDelGro offer only slight reprieve to taxi drivers, as the daily rental rate for a hybrid taxi is $120, compared with $100 for a diesel taxi. "Taxi firms should look into lowering the rental rates. If not, cabbies may not switch to hybrid taxis, and instead clock longer hours and distances on their diesel cabs to cover the higher diesel rates. "This runs contrary to the intention of the tax hike," Mr Ang said. https://www.straitstimes.com/politics/baey-diesel-tax-hike-for-better-living-environment

  9. Hello, I am a new member here. My dad is considering a cheap MPV and we have narrowed down to a Hafei Minz and a Wuling Journey. So far I have only seen Hafei reviews but I rarely see any Wuling reviews. So any bros here can give me some advice on which one to choose?
  10. Hello all, Just to seek some opinions and advise from MCF members and experience professional. I've just committed to an AD for a new car, and here comes my dilemma... The car comes with a 18' matte/silver colored rims and I do not like the color. I've always been fan of shinny chrome rims as it is easy to clean and wash daily. Is it advisable to purchase a new set of chrome rims (same size 18') and use back the tyres, or it is better to keep the OEM rims and have them chromed so that the performance is not wrongly compromised by the newly purchased chrome rims? If the latter is true, then where in SG can get this service for chroming the rims? TIA

  13. Please remove if already posted. If not please help to rename the title. Looks like a brighter future for bus commuters ..... if they succeed, http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/article.php?AID=12931 The Straits Times reported that Tower Transit which had submitted the third lowest bid, will operate the new Bulim Bus Depot - off Jurong West Avenue 2 - and 26 bus services from the Jurong East, Bukit Batok and Clementi bus interchanges progressively from the second quarter of 2016. These services are currently run by SMRT and SBS Transit. The company will get an estimated total fee of $556 million over the five-year contract period to run the services. Feeder services will run at shorter intervals of six to eight minutes. The current fleet of 290 buses serving the zone will grow to about 380. The Land Transport Authority said that commuters can expect higher service levels as all bus services will have scheduled headways of no more than 15 minutes in both directions during the morning and evening peaks. "The restructuring of the public bus industry and the injection of more competition will bring about even higher bus service levels for commuters. With bus contracting, the Government will plan bus services and can thus be more responsive to changes in ridership and commuter needs," said LTA's chief executive officer Chew Men Leong. Under the new regime, the Government owns the buses and other infrastructure, collects all the revenue from fares and pays transport firms to operate the routes.

  15. Saw this article Mar 16 http://travel.asiaone.com/article/news/what-some-sporeans-do-when-travelling-overseas By Chai Hung Yin The New Paper | Mon, Mar 16 2015 Chinese tourists, who have been making headlines for poor behaviour abroad, are not the only badly behaved travellers. Singaporeans sometimes don't fare much better. Here are some anecdotes from Singaporeans serving Singaporeans travellers. COMPLAINT KING (READ: DEMANDING AND FUSSY) Singaporeans are among those who are the hardest to please when it comes to food, says Mr John Tan, 50, a tour leader, and tour guide. "They even expect the overseas chef to whip up local dishes like fried beehoon," says Mr Tan. Singaporeans also demand cheap stuff but then complain about the poor quality, he adds. "They do not understand that it is 'yi fen qian, yi fen huo' (the quality of the product depends on the price)." BADLY BEHAVED KIDS A child, aged five, refused to have his seat belt fastened and his parents did nothing on a flight from Jakarta. An air steward who wanted to be known only as Jude recalls: "The child wasn't sick, just naughty. Yet the parents still accommodated the kid's antics." Just before the flight landed, the father stood up with the child in his arms to pacify him. Jude says: "It was very dangerous. I shouted at the top of my voice for him to sit down. He had a shock and thankfully sat down (with the kid)." AIRPLANE FRACAS A group of Singaporeans on a tour to an East Asian country chatted loudly on a red-eye flight. It prompted a passenger trying to get some shut-eye to throw water on the group. The water fell on a teenager and escalated into a fracas when the girl's father stood up and grabbed the neck of the passenger, says tour guide Simon Lim. When the plane landed, the airport police were waiting for them. The tour group was held up while Mr Lim tried to mediate between the feuding parties. HELLO RABID KITTY FANS In June 2013, a Singaporean couple wrecked a Hello Kitty-themed one-room apartment in Taipei when they were there for a holiday. They even refused to return the apartment keys and returned days later to steal snacks, a limited edition Hello Kitty hair dryer and toys. The owner of the property estimated that the damage caused by the couple was about NT$30,000 (S$1,315). WHY TIP? A woman in her 50s told freelance tour leader Vincent Ng at the start of a tour in Egypt: "Make sure your service is really good. Otherwise I'll deduct $2 a day (from his tips)." Mr Ng, 50, ended up serving her hand and foot, going as far as holding the woman's hands when she was walking across a bridge or riding a horse. She was pleased at first, but changed her tack when it came to their last meal. She grumbled about "eating in a Chinese restaurant in Egypt". Mr Ng eventually forked out US$60 (S$85) of his own money on room service for her. Yet she still wasn't happy when he collected service fees from the tour group, and relented only when others chided her for not wanting to pay. RELUCTANT BAG STOWER A plane nearly turned back after a woman in her mid 30s refused to stow her cabin luggage: Not in the overhead compartment, nor underneath the seat in front of her. Says Jude, who works for a no-frills airline "She was five seconds away from being off-loaded." She finally gave in after much cajoling from the crew. When they arrived at their destination, she went up to Jude's colleagues and threatened: "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Complaint Queen." How ironic.. Comments

  18. My uncle looking for a compact MPV for his family of 4 and on the rare occasions 6 person. He is currently driving Honda Stream which has been good for him for 10 years but it is due for scrap soon. He is hopping to get something cheaper in the running costs like fuel efficiency, lower road tax and lower depreciation and yet at the same time, something as powerful as his stream, and as reliable as his stream. He is hoping to look for a used one in the market that is about 3-4 years old. currently, i see the Toyota Wish as the best option as it fits almost all his criteria. his priority i guess should be reliability and running cost. his old stream clocked almost 400,000 km mileage due to the nature of his business. i did think of diesel powered MPVs since his mileage is high enough to have decent savings. the problem is that the diesel powered MPVs are continental which usually means higher maintenance costs which again will offset any fuel savings. hope you guys can chip in if there is any other option better than toyota wish.

  21. Really sad case. The defendant is likely to have a faster recovery and integrate better into society if she is admitted into IMH and treated there, rather than spend 10 years in jail. Does the Public Prosecutor have a heart? Something very wrong with Singapore's judicial system. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/mum-who-pushed-son-out-of/1379930.html SINGAPORE: Feeling stressed out as she had been unemployed for some time and was financially dependent on her ageing mother, Rebecca Loh Chui Lai was worried about providing for her nine-year-old son. Believing that the authorities would remove him from her care if she injured him badly enough, Loh, who has schizophrenia, pushed her son out of the window of their fifth-floor flat, causing him to plunge to his death. For this, Loh, who has shown flashes of violent behaviour in the past, was on Wednesday (Sep 24) sentenced to 10 years’ jail. Loh had pleaded guilty to one charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code, which is for an offence committed knowing that it would likely cause death but without the intention of causing death, or cause a bodily injury likely to cause death. The maximum jail term for the charge is 10 years. Loh, a single mother, was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2006 and had been warded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) on several occasions. The 32-year-old was initially charged with murder. She was determined to be mentally fit to stand trial, but the charge was later amended. Her son, Gabriel Loh Zhen Jie, was diagnosed with a liver condition shortly after his birth and suffered from osteoporosis. STOPPED TAKING MEDICATION The court heard on Wednesday that Loh was remanded at IMH from Feb 24 to Mar 10, 2011. She had been charged after she went to a coffee shop with a chopper, thinking that a stranger had made fun of her. Two weeks before the incident, she had stopped taking her medication. Later that year in December, Loh was admitted to IMH after she had hit her mother for not allowing her to go for a movie. She complied with follow-up treatment until April 2012, but stopped after that, saying travelling to IMH was a hindrance. She failed to keep her follow-up appointments at a community clinic. In February last year, she was admitted to IMH again after she tried to strangle her mother. On June 1 last year, Loh carried Gabriel from the living room to the kitchen window of her mother’s flat on West Coast Road. She then lifted him onto the small ledge outside the kitchen window and pushed his hands away as he cried and held on to the bamboo clothes-drying poles. She eventually managed to dislodge his grip and he fell to the ground. On Wednesday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Lee urged the court to impose a jail term of eight to 10 years. “(Loh) needs to be incapacitated for a substantial period of time due to the high risk of her relapsing and the danger that she poses should she suffer a relapse,” he said. The prosecution also submitted a report by an IMH psychiatrist, which stated that Loh was at a moderate to high risk of future violence and had poor insight into her mental disorder. Lawyer Amarick Gill, who represented Loh, said this was not a classic case of culpable homicide. It involved an offender with a serious mental condition yet is of sound mind, and a victim who suffered greatly as a result of physical disabilities from birth, he said. In sentencing on Wednesday, Justice Tay Yong Kwang said he had taken Loh’s history, the hope of a complete recovery and the safety of those she comes into contact with into account. During the hearing, Loh smiled and mumbled to herself. Her family was not present. -TODAY/cy

  23. Confirmed, inside skull is kosong ..... yahoo news: Minister: Malaysia’s audit report thicker, so better than Singapore’s KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Malaysia’s audit of federal agencies demonstrates exceeding accountability vis-a-vis Singapore, whose national audit report was “only 70 pages” long, a federal minister asserted today. Datuk Paul Low, the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of integrity, said the Auditor-General’s Reports in Malaysia that consisted of thick volumes, were very detailed in comparison. “Look at Singapore’s audit report, it’s only 70 pages, so in that sense, the practice we have today exceeds the norm of accountability for the public sector,” Low told a press briefing on the AG 2013 Report (second series) here today. He also pleaded with the media not to bring politics into the mix, pointing out that today’s press briefing allowed them to question the secretaries-general of the various ministries on the government audit report. “The media and the government are partners and we’re here together to make changes for the betterment of the country,” said Low. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, who was also at the briefing, similarly praised the length of the AG reports. “We go into the nuts and bolts,” he said. When asked why financial mismanagement and procurement problems kept plaguing government ministries over the years, Ali said that total perfection was impossible. “We can’t be perfect 100 per cent. There’ll be glitches, but we are trying to be perfect,” said Ali. Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has said it would call up five ministries over mismanagement problems highlighted by the AG’s 2013 report (second series) that was released yesterday. The departments in question are the Education Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Federal Territories Ministry, the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, and the Home Ministry. PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said yesterday the police force had incurred the biggest losses in the report, due to the 16-month delay in the construction of the Sentul district police headquarters that had cost the Home Ministry RM73,512 in rent for six months. link: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/minister-malaysia-audit-report-thicker-better-singapore-080000951.html Hmmmmm...........total perfection was impossible for financial mismanagement & procurement problems in gov ministries .. If MY total 13 states reports thinner than SG, something really and seriously wrong ...
