  2. THE Government is looking at introducing programmes tailored for marriages between Singaporeans and foreigners. These programmes would involve counsellors and educators trained to address cross-cultural issues. Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan disclosed this in a reply on Tuesday to a parliamentary question from Nominated MP Paulin Straughan, who had asked how resilient were the marriages of couples brought together by agencies that match Singaporean men with foreign brides. There are no figures of such matchmade couples, but marriages between Singaporean men and foreign women were on the rise, said Dr Balakrishnan. Last year, there were 6,360 marriages between Singaporean men and foreign brides, up from 5,414 in 2004. But their divorce rate was not significantly different from other marriages, he said. For instance, 4 per cent of these 2004 marriages ended five years later while the divorce rate for all marriages in the same period was 6 per cent. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_444343.html --- got catalogs to choose one not heheee...

  10. I did some calculation and found that actually there is not much difference between taking a 10 yr loan and 7 yr loan if you are going to change your car soon. Difference only ranges between 1+ to 3+ k, depending on the interest and loan amount. The longer you take to sell the car, the greater the difference of course. My calculations assumes interest rate is 2.8%, loan amount is 50k and rule of 78 is in place. ******************************************* Taking 10 years loan with Rule of 78 Original Loan Amount $50,000.00 Interest Rate 2.80% Total Interest $14,000.00 Total Payable $64,000.00 Years of loan taken 10 No. of months of instalment 120 Amount per instalment $533.33 No. of months paid 36 No. of months balance 84 Amount paid $19,200.00 Unearned Interest $6,884.30 Rebate of unearned interest (less 20%) $5,507.44 Interest Penalty $1,376.86 Total amount payable for full redemption $39,292.56 (Total Payable - Interest Rebate - Instalment Paid) Total amount paid $58,492.56 (Instalment + Redemption) ******************************************* Taking 7 years loan with Rule of 78 Original Loan Amount $50,000.00 Interest Rate 2.80% Total Interest $9,800.00 Total Payable $59,800.00 Years of loan taken 7 No. of months of instalment 84 Amount per instalment $711.90 No. of months paid 36 No. of months balance 48 Amount paid $25,628.57 Unearned Interest $3,228.24 Rebate of unearned interest (less 20%) $2,582.59 Interest Penalty $645.65 Total amount payable for full redemption $31,588.84 (Total Payable - Interest Rebate - Instalment Paid) Total amount paid $57,217.41 (Instalment + Redemption) ******************************************* Difference = $1,275.15
  11. A town councillor in Wales, Mark Easton, had a beautiful view of the mountains, until a new neighbour purchased the land below his house and built a new home. The new home was 18 inches higher than the planning dept had approved, so Mark Easton, mad about his lost view, went to the local authority to make sure they enforced the roof line height. The new neighbour had to drop the roof height, at great expense. Recently, Mark Easton called the planning dept, and informed them that his new neighbour had installed some vents on the side of his new property. Mark didn't like the look of these vents and asked the planning dept to investigate. When they went to Mark's home to see what the vents looked like, this is what they found...
  12. Hi all, Happy New Year, Would like to find out more about the maintenance cost for Saab and Volvo. a) For normal servicing, do the local ADs allow you to bring your own oil and oil filter? b) What is the indicative servicing cost for the respective service intervals? Some other brands AD published their servicing cost on-line, Saab and Volvo, do they? c) Which brand has the perceived higher maintenance cost in the long run? d) Are there lack of local expertise in servicing these 2 car brands? e) Are there local stockist for parts and accessories of these 2 brands? f) Generally, which one has a higher insurance premium? g) Are there authorized servicing centre in JB for these 2 brands? Can new and old cars (after 3 years) go there for servicing? in case they only recognize MY regsitered Saab or Volvo. Thank you very much. Regards,
  13. Last week, I receive a voucher from Shell thats contained 8 pieces of $3/- discount coupon for each week till end March for every refueling above $50/-. Stated also that if you use UOB card, a further 11% discount (inclusive of station discount) ........ Armed with the coupon and OUB card, went to refuel last Sat and was informed that my OUB card only entitle me to 3% discount + station discount of 5% (total 8%). To qualify for the 11%, I have to have the special UOB Ladies Card or their UOB Diamond card. My UOB Gold card is of no use for Shell see me no up ........ . When pumping at Caltex, one could use any OCBC card which will entitle you to the station discount of 5% plus 5% (total 10%) ....... If Shell wants to attach customers, why discriminate the types of cards. Be it Classic, Gold, Platinium ......etc..
  14. Hi car owners, Do you think riding in between lanes is a form of defensive riding for the riders? Why can't riders ride within lane? Some of us don't mind them to ride between lanes to get to the front at traffic lights. Should we all start to adopt a protocol to honk to alert rider who is riding infront of you but riding in between lanes or by the edge of the lane? Sometimes, I find some of them are opportuntists, machiam seating on fence to see which lane is to their advantages. By doing so, it kinds of inconvenient the drivers behind, i.e. we wonder whether we should just overtake or stay behind them? Your view please. Thank you very much. Regards,

  22. anybody encounter before? last night, as i was moving off from the carpark lot, started engine and moved off slowly, i heard some noise from the rear left side of the car and the pickup was rather sluggish. i thought to myself, siao liao, is it bua tio anything. but i remember rear left side was clear. then i stopped and got off the car to inspect. to my horror, i discovered a cat kenna kiaped between the rear left tyre and the wheel guard it was in rather awkward position and not moving, but didnt see too closely and quickly went back to reverse the car to release it. as i reversed slowly, the cat struggled and made some noise and eventually got off from my car. it ran to a corner and stood there. then i move off slowly and drove away. i think the cat must be sleeping very soundly on the wheel and not woke up by my door opening/closing and ignition. upon reaching my destination, i came out to inspect again. i saw some traces of water marks on the tyre and noted a pungent smell. i guessed the cat might have siam sai/jio while being caught. went to get a pail and splashed 3 pails worth of water to get rid of the sai/jio smell. what an experience
