  1. I went to About.com and they got some hints on how to teach kids ride a bike. I think Kianbeng's earlier idea of dismantling the pedals is a good one. Actually, we should buy a kid bike but as the shop uncle to remove the pedals. Yes. REMOVE THE PEDALS. Can add on later. Have the kid push the bike around as a toddler. Confirm will push both feet off and roll around. You have let your kid conquer the skill of balancing. For older kid, use this video. I find it very good. For adults also very good. The thing is to roll down first. Grass softer to land but if on hard ground, choose a place with a gentler gradient. Later you add pedaling, then straight line riding then turning.. All are documented here. http://www.ibike.org/education/teaching-kids.htm Of course there are some products if you all like to use. It is listed on the site. But trust me. The skirt wheels does not inspire confidence. The way I look at this program from iBike, 10 days is all it takes to ride a bike from human being aged 7-65.

  3. Not the first time..Seen quite a number of them riding on the road lately..some ride without helment..Almost knock down 2 of them..No helment..no lighting..and somemore carrying pillion.. Was at the Cross junction at chong pang turning right..on the green arrow..I move off and on my right was a panel van..We were side by side and suddenly he slow down..this 2 jokers on a electric bicycle just simply cut into my lane..Luckily I was not going fast..would have knock them down.. Came to a traffic light..all cars stopped at red light..This jokers simply bashed through.. Do watch out for them especially at night..
  4. So with major concern towards the environment, changes are happening to the motoring public. The promotion of hybrid cars, electric cars, fuel efficient petrol and diesel cars as well as eco-friendly supercars. But say you still think that motorcars are what's causing global warming and you'd like to contribute less towards this. What could be done about it aside from walking more, taking the MRT, buying or converting your car to run on NGV, buy a hybrid, drive like Mother Theresa or just stay home and not go out? You could buy a horse. A thoroughbred race horse from the turf club that is about to be pensioned off is a good choice. It may be cheap to buy and maintain unless he's a prize winning horse like Seabiscuit whereby his sperm could make fast baby racehorses an and therefore make it rather expensive. Find one that always loses, learn horseback riding as a horse carriage would be considered as a trailer and may fall under the jurisdiction of the LTA (that's Land Transport Authority to those of you who aren't local) and you may need to license it. So you trot your way to work. If you live in an apartment. You could park the horse at the grassy patch near the entrance of the apartment and let it graze and eat grass there. Then later at night, I'd bring that horse to the apartment carpark which I've paid for and have it converted into a stable. I think it's a foolproof plan if you're traveling alone or with a friend. The costs would be very little and you'll be kind to the environment as the only greenhouse gas the transport (horse) will produce if some methane when it farts or passes motion. If it gets sick and outlives its usefulness, you could always be the John Wayne you wanted to be and shoot the horse like cowboys do. Of course the horse is just a radical thought that will never see the light of day. It would be simpler to ride a bicycle rather than do what I've said above. Add the quite strenuous fact that you have to climb quite a bit to reach the saddle makes it a chore. To me at least. Riding a bicycle is a good eco-friendly option. No fossil fuels are burnt and you will be fit and healthy too. But you're definitely not going to pedal from Johor Bahru to Changi for your daily commute as if you were unfit in the first place, you may end up with a cardiac arrest. And this is an automotive website. Where's the motoring part of it if I were to talk to you about cycling? This brings us to commuting on a motorcycle. A motorcycle is a motorized bicycle if you wanted to keep the explanation simple. It is most of the time a cheap and efficient means of transport. A commute on a motorcycle would mean that you don't take up so much road space and you've bought yourself a vehicle that does no use much raw material compared to a car. This means that you've already made an environmental friendly practice by buying a motorcycle and using it. Unless its a two-stroke motorcycle that is, which is polluting to the environment due to its designs using the total-loss lubrication method, with the lubricating oil being burnt in the combustion chamber, causing "blue smoke" and other types of exhaust pollution. So a good four stroke engined motorcycle is the bike you want to be seen on if you want to be regarded as an eco-friendly person. Buy one with good power to weight ratio and you will have speed, power, great fuel economy and less CO2 emissions than average car. This does not mean that you should buy a Ducati Monster over a Honda Cub as the Honda does its job pretty well too, and is an automotive icon on its own too. You also save time and fuel too as you don't sit in a traffic jam as you do not get stuck behind another car. Actually I am suggesting that everyone starts riding a motorcycle to work so that the roads are free of traffic jams. Free of jams so that yours truly may use his car peacefully. I tried riding a bike before and I had very bad coordination in trying to change gears with my foot and use the hand clutch. I kept thinking why can't a bike have a gearshift that you could use your thumb to change gears or a DSG type transmission so I can just focus on the riding much better and avoid myself getting killed. I also felt extremely naked and the thought of being under a lorry or a bus somehow made the joys of motorcycling much lesser for me. Pillion riding on a BMW motorcycle a long while back was also a little unnerving as every time the chap piloting the darn bike gunned it out of a junction I felt as if my hands were about to be torn off from the hand grips and that I was going to land on my behind and get hit by a truck. Yes I am paranoid when it comes to riding a bike. But I want you people to ride one for my own car using convenience. Hence the irony. The other reason is that I just like the Confederate motorcycles pictured below, and this article gives me a reason to post some pictures of what I think beats the heck out of owning a Ducati 1198 or a MV Augusta Brutale . The styling on these bikes are very steam punk-ish or retro modern or whatever art based term you may have for the designs. The Confederate motorcycle is a stupendous piece of handcrafted American engineering. Their cars may be rubbish, but their bikes are, as I believe, made with as much passion as an Italian motorcycle. Lexus Hybrid bike

When we think of the term "hybrid," at least in its vehicular sense, we tend to conjure up images of cars like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. These machines are so named due to their dual power trains, mostly consisting of an internal combustion engine coupled to an electric motor. Lexus' newest hybrid concept proudly carries its moniker despite the complete lack of an engine. It does, however, have a 240-Watt electric motor powered by a 25.9-volt lithium battery pack coupled with leg power! Lexus actually displayed a duo of hybrid electric bicycles at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, and the Japanese automaker is now touting the bike as part of its sponsorship of the Great British Bike Ride. According to Lexus, the frame is constructed of carbon fiber and uses an eight-speed internal gear system sourced from Shimano, in reference to the LS 600h's eight-speed automatic. Sad to say, there are no plans to put the bike into production yet.

    Kona bicycle

Thinking of getting one, any comments? Any shop to recommend?
  12. now that there are legalized versions of battery powered motorized bicycles, there's a revival of gungho riders out to test the limits of road safety. they seem to think that having attached a motor to their bicycle makes them lightning fast & boosted their confidence to cruise on the outermost lane or zip across 3 lanes a motorized bicycle in the wrong hands is just an accident waiting to happen.

    Bicycle lights..

Hi guys! Just got myself a bike. Would like to find out if there are some bros here with directions and advice on headlights and taillights to affix onto the bike to make sure i m seen when I'm riding. Am looking for those running on AA batteries, with variable on modes, like blink and flood. Currently looking at Fenix and/or Cateye stuff. Anyone know where I could get them? If you have the prices it would be great! Please PM if its not convenient to post it out in the open. Thanks!

  15. Read the news that E-max is going to sell electric scooters in Singapore soon. So I did some internet reading up, and saw this so called Electric Bicycle that actually looks like a scooter. http://www.x-tremescooters.com/electric_bi...li/xb700li.html The extra two pedals....somehow allows the manufacturer to get it classified as a bicycle...very smart of them! Would this be a better choice for Singapore IF it can be classified as a bicycle by LTA. Any chance?
  16. anyone saw the news on the foldable bicycle bring onto the bus last night? what is the model of the bicyle and how much?
  17. May 15, 2008 Man who chained up library doors charged By Elena Chong A 58-YEAR-OLD man was charged in a magistrate's court on Thursday with using a bicycle chain to lock the steel handles of the glass doors at the entrance of the National Library building. Retiree Bin Hee Heng did not give a plea. He is accused of public nuisance by causing annoyance to the public at the Victoria Street premises on March 15. He made news two months ago when he insisted on parking his bicycle at the library's pedestrian walkway instead of designated bicycle lots nearby. An avid investor, Bin has been a frequent library user, going there four times a week to read Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. Bin, who was not represented, told the court that he was making representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers. He told the court twice that he was not an anti-social element. He also said he had apologised to the chief executive officer of NLB in March. He appealed for compassion and sympathy. Bail of $5,000 was set. His case will be mentioned on June 12. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $1,000. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_237624.html

  19. Hey guys, what do you think of this? Here is a interesting question for the forummers: if a motor cyclist, while pushing his bike on the road, injured a pedestrian, is that hit-and-run? but it meets the following definition of: 1. Accident involved with a motor vehicle 2. Accident occurred on the road. http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,...,155470,00.html? ONE moment she was carrying her baby and waiting to cross the road. Click to see larger image Madam Stevanie showing where her baby hit her face and head. -- Pictures: JONATHAN CHOO The next Madam Stevanie Nur Rindynie, 24, fell to the ground with her baby. A cyclist riding on the pavement had knocked into the housewife, causing her to lose her balance. Madam Stevanie said the impact and fall caused her to black out for a few seconds, then she heard her daughter, Allysyia Nur Ashura, crying loudly. It was then that she realised her baby, who turned three months old two days ago, had hit her head and face on the kerb. She suffered scratches and bruises. Apart from dreading what serious injury Allysyia might have incurred if the knock had been worse, what angered Madam Stevanie was that the cyclist did not stop to help. 'After he hit me, he stopped for a moment, then cycled away. He did not even say sorry,' she told The New Paper Madam Stevanie and her husband, safety executive Abdul Halil Abdul Hamid, 34, are now wondering if the cyclist had broken the law by not stopping to render help. But lawyer A P Thirumoorthy said Madam Stevanie's case could not be considered a hit-and-run accident. He said that under the Road Traffic Act, a bicycle was not considered a motor vehicle. Click to see larger image Besides, the incident occurred on the pavement and not on the road. Mr Thirumoorthy said: 'Under these circumstances, the incident cannot be considered a hit-and-run case. But it may be considered as a rash or dangerous act.' The incident also brings into focus the longstanding issue of cyclists and pedestrians sharing footpaths, with pedestrians often complaining about reckless cyclists endangering them. In Tampines, a year-long trial project is on to see if both can co-exist peacefully on shared footpaths. At 1.30pm on Thursday, Madam Stevanie was returning home after taking her 5-year-old son, Mohd Iqbal, to kindergarten. It is a route she takes every weekday. She was carrying her daughter in her left arm and waiting to cross the road near a bus bay on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10. She said: 'Suddenly a cyclist came and hit my left hip and shoulder. I lost my balance and stretched out my right hand to steady myself. 'As I did so, I turned my body and fell to the ground. I had a short blackout and then I heard my baby crying loudly. 'It seems she hit her head and face on the kerb. She was bleeding from the nose. The cyclist saw what happened but he just cycled off.' Madam Stevanie said the man was cycling on the pavement. Cyclists in Singapore are barred from cycling on pedestrian pavements and expressways. NOBODY HELPED Madam Stevanie said two elderly women near the bus-stop saw what had happened but nobody helped her or her baby. She said: 'Maybe they wanted to help but were too old to do so.' After getting over her shock, Madam Stevanie took Allysyia to a nearby clinic. She said: 'After crying for a while, my daughter fell asleep. I was panicking because I did not see how she had hurt her head and face. 'Although her nose bleeding had stopped, I was worried that she might have internal injuries or a concussion.' Madam Stevanie called her husband from the clinic. Mr Abdul Halil said: 'I was on my way home when my wife called and said she was worried for our daughter because she had a fall. She told me what had happened. I was afraid she might have serious injuries. 'I was glad to hear that she had taken our child to the doctor and I met her at the clinic.' Both parents were relieved when the doctor told them Allysyia's injuries were not life-threatening. Madam Stevanie said: 'I had pain on my left hip and shoulder but no medication was needed. 'The doctor gave me some cream for Allysyia.' Madam Stevanie said the doctor told her to take her baby to hospital immediately if she started vomiting. Vomiting is a sign of potentialconcussion. Mr Abdul Halil later sent pictures and an account of the incident to Stomp. He said: 'Luckily, the doctor said that my daughter had only mild abrasions and mild swelling on the right side of her head. 'But what if something serious had happened to my baby? 'The cyclist could have swerved to avoid my wife, couldn't he?' When The New Paper called Mr Abdul Halil on Friday, he said Allysyia was all right and behaving normally. He added that the baby had not been crying more than usual. Madam Stevanie said she is glad that she and her daughter escaped serious injury. She said: 'But I should also have been more careful. I should have used the pedestrian crossing nearby.'

  21. its my turn to rant... place: along guillemard opposite s'pore badminton association day/time: yesterday about 6.30pm road condition: fair weather, moderate traffic while waiting like the rest for the light to turn green, i looked around, bored..as usual.. noticed from my rear-view mirror there's a bicycle cyclist (with full cycle gear, helmet, tights, sunglass etc) weaving in from 2 to my lane (1). thought, should'nt they cycle on lane 3? its dangerous man... then i glanced in front, great, light in front turned green.. gonna prepare to move off. suddenly, a BANG sound from the rear. i looked back, saw the stupid cyclist crashed his bicycle on my car! i was stunned for a moment, while the guy quickly picked up his bicycle and continued his way. i quickly came out, and expectedly, there was a dent and some deep scratches. but the bugger has gone ahead. pissed off, i give chase along the same lane even tho he was out of sight.. after a minute, saw him still cycling on lane 1. drove beside him, honked and asked if he's ok. he said he's fine. then i told him to pull over at road side cos there's damage to my car and i wanna talk with him. he said ok i filtered to lane 3 and stopped before the next red light. but that bugger just cycled off. darn.. true enough, after the light turned green again, he's gone, either continued his way to paya lebar, sims or geylang road.. knn.. no balls to be a responsible man to face what he has done btw, he's a grown-up man, with a fake angmor accent.. PUI!
  22. I am sure most of you would have read about the ang moh riding around town in that silly bicyle in the papers and in Stomp. This guy is an accident waiting to happen. Just drove past him last night and he experienced side wind and almost crashed into me. Why arent the police doing anything?
