  1. Ron Dennis, Executive Chairman of McLaren Automotive, has described the world's most expensive production car as
  2. HE E-MAILED a prospective employee, asking her to be his 'special designer girlfriend'. Mr Shankar Venkataraman, 45, who owns a publishing firm, sees nothing wrong in sending such e-mails to staff and job applicants. But the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices disagrees. It has denounced his indecent proposals as 'inappropriate and unacceptable'. One woman who applied for a job with his company was so outraged by his brazen come-on and subsequent lack of remorse she contacted The New Paper on Sunday. Mary (not her real name) had applied for a graphic designer position at eShan Publishing in January. The 23-year-old, a trained graphic designer, was offered a job soon after. But her joy turned to shock when she got an e-mail from Mr Venkataraman asking her to be his 'special designer girlfriend'. She recalled: 'I sent out my resume and the owner of the publishing company e-mailed me back, asking to meet me. 'I met him. He seemed like a normal guy and gave me encouraging comments about my portfolio.' Several days later, Mary e-mailed Mr Venkataraman with an idea for a publication that his company was about to launch. He replied to say he liked her idea. But she was horrified to read the rest of his e-mail. It read: 'I do hope that you are perfectly single... I have a lots (sic) in store for a romantic partner, for I do not know whether you would understand, that certain creativity too requires that proximity and feel. 'I am sure you know that creativity does not happen under office environment or employer-employee setting. I will soon be starting to travel... so I do wish to have you as my special 'designer' girlfriend and travel companion.' Mr Venkataraman added that he hoped, through his publications, to promote open relationships in society. Mary, who is currently working as a temp with Singapore Press Holdings, said she was 'disgusted' by his request and sent an e-mail politely rejecting his romantic overtures. She replied that she regarded him as a potential boss and requested some 'decency' in his behaviour. But Mr Venkataraman was undeterred. He wrote in another e-mail: ''Decency' and 'respect'... are deterrents to creativity... it builds a communication gap, in turn affecting the creativity. In my own finding, creativity requires that 'dirtyness' to be born... 'As I anticipated, your response too was predicted (sic) in a world filled with norms... But I feel good that a channel is (sic) been created and that I chose to be 'indecent' early, so that no undue decency builds up and obstructs in future.' Mr Venkataraman's company employs three women and four men, The New Paper on Sunday understands. Mary said: 'I spoke to one of his employees, who put me in touch with a female colleague who said she had also received e-mails containing sexual propositions.' The woman declined to be interviewed as she is still working in the company, but gave The New Paper on Sunday permission to use excerpts of her e-mail correspondence with Mr Venkataraman. In one e-mail broadcast to a group of his employees, Mr Venkataraman repeatedly referred to himself as the company's 'captain'. He stressed the importance of trust among co-workers, and urged those with an 'uncomfortable state of mind' to leave the company. He wrote: 'I would also not hesitate to disclose that our 'Physical Sexual feeling' is nothing but a natural urge... 'To either sex, the partner is just an outlet or a companion, and its like going to pee together or like having a coffee together... A spouse is nothing but an attached bathroom or outlet.' He went on to offer himself as an 'outlet for all incontinence'. He said: 'I have no qualms to announce that I am available for SEX relief, for I do envisage that as members of this vessel, we may get a special treatment and its best we keep things between ourselves, rather than looking for an outside avenue, which can endanger the journey. 'So anyone is free to press the 'attendant' button on the vessel for this.' In another e-mail he wrote to a group of his company's writers, he said he was in 'dire need' of a soulmate and travel companion. Mr Venkataraman signed off the e-mails as eShan, his pseudonym. The New Paper on Sunday contacted him via e-mail and asked if he saw anything wrong in trying to initiate romantic and sexual relationships with his employees through his e-mails. We also asked Mr Venkataraman, an Indian national with permanent residency here, if he felt Singaporean women were too conservative. He did not reply directly to the questions. Instead, he challenged us to publish his e-mails. He said: 'It's good to note that some seeds I have sown are showing results... How about you publish those e-mails and this e-mail of yours, and I reply through my publication'' When probed further, he said: 'Your questions... show that you have closed your mind in many ways, and your picture is complete.' In another e-mail to The New Paper on Sunday, he described himself as 'someone who has finished 'family' life', who has chosen a career in publishing to 'break all traditional barriers'. Refusing to answer our questions, he said they were 'media blackmail' and 'extortion of information by ransom'. He added: 'Your questions are absurd and narrow-minded, and is (sic) only reflection of how humanity has degraded and thus life itself... 'But from my e-mails you can see that I am not into cheapskate sex. I proposed to the girl in question, since I found her having the potential and talents for some of my creations that are planned.' He said he was merely exercising his right to propose. 'I just did not make a standard proposal, as it was after a few exchanges which gave me the intuition that the person has the capacity for elevated thinking.' THERE are no laws against sexual harassment in Singapore. But is it a serious enough problem here' In a study released in 2008 by Aware, more than half of the 500 people surveyed said they had experienced some form of sexual harassment at work. The majority of victims were women aged 21 to 25. Most were harassed by either a colleague or superior. Human resource (HR) practitioners said enough measures are in place to safeguard against workplace sexual harassment. Mr David Ang, executive director of the Singapore Human Resources Institute, said many employers have policies to address sexual harassment in the office. Penalties for improper behaviour, he noted, include disciplinary inquiries and, in some cases, dismissal. 'Employees should be able to approach their supervisors or HR department for help,' he said. In cases involving top personnel, they can opt to lodge reports with the authorities, Mr Ang added. Asked if there was a need for better legislation, he said: 'I don't think sexual harassment is an issue which can be easily dealt with through legislation. '(It) is a very personal issue, and the law cannot dictate who an individual works with, and what a working relationship should be like.' Similarly, Mr Paul Heng, founder of HR firm Next Career Consulting Group, feels it would be difficult to establish laws specifically for sexual harassment. He said: 'Individuals have different values and personalities - it would be difficult to legislate sexual harassment.' THE Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (Tafep) has spoken to Mary and Mr Shankar Venkataraman about the incident, its spokesman said. She said: 'Based on the information given by both parties, the approach taken by the employer in recruiting and selecting staff is inappropriate and unacceptable. The employer has been advised accordingly. 'There are responsible employment practices and standards of behaviour which all employers are expected to comply with when offering jobs.' Imposing roles or activities unrelated to work, she noted, is considered 'an abuse of power' on the employer's part and is 'exploitative of job seekers who are in need of a job'. She added: 'Such behaviour has no place in an employer-employee relationship.' Ms Corinna Lim, executive director of the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware), told The New Paper on Sunday that those who believe they have been sexually harassed should make a police report. They should also seek legal advice either from lawyers in private practice or at free legal clinics. Though there is no specific law against sexual harassment in Singapore, Ms Lim said that in some cases, it may be possible for perpetrators of sexual harassment to be charged under the law. The former lawyer referred to Section 509 of the Penal Code, which states that individuals intending to insult the modesty of any woman by saying any word, making any sound or gesture, or exhibiting any object, can be jailed up to one year, fined, or both. Under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance Act), those who use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress to another person may be fined up to $5,000. Aware conducts a Legal Clinic twice a month to provide women with free legal information and advice. For more information, call the Aware Helpline at 1800 774-5935 or e-mail [email protected]
  3. found something very interesting during a weekend drink session, a lady SME boss join us and after a couple of drinks. she told me her secret on how she saved on CPF and Medicals for her employees. she is the owner of a media company dealing with children , what she would do is sack the employees every 2 to 3 months thus there wont be a need to pay CPF and only salary minus 20%( Employee Contributions) as she would tell the employee that it would be paid to CPF which she didnt do, her aim is to get new sales staff to bring in 1 or 2 customers during their stay and once it achieve would sack them immediately and she take over the account . for the editoral staffs, she would ask them to leave every 3 to 4 months so the publication would have constant fresh ideals i dont think what she is doing is right and hope that should there be any CPF board members reading this please look into such companies so as to stamp out such practises

  5. Home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Feb 3, 2009 4 charged over MLM scam By Elena Chong Phang (left), who has the most charges, is said to have conspired with his wife, Ms Jenny Chan, an accounts clerk, and others to falsify accounts involving amounts of $20,000 to $245,000 on six occasions between December 2006 and August 2007. -- ST PHOTO: SHAHRIYA YAHAYA FOUR people were hauled to court on Tuesday on charges of being involved in a fraudulent investment scheme in connection with the controversial multi-level marketing firm Sunshine Empire. Phang Wah, 49, better known as James Phang, his wife, Neo Kuon Huay, 46, Jackie Hoo Choon Cheat, 29, and Yong Wai Hong, 27, face between six and 20 charges each. The prosecution alleges that Hoo, a director of Sunshine, abetted Phang and others to siphon $947,905 from the firm between December 2006 and August 2007. Both men are said to being party to Sunshine's business when they knew it was fraudulently selling prime packages which included potential returns. Phang, described as a manager, and Hoo are accused of failing to keep accounting and other records for financial year 2007. Phang, who has the most charges, is said to have conspired with his wife, Ms Jenny Chan, an accounts clerk, and others to falsify accounts involving amounts of $20,000 to $245,000 on six occasions between December 2006 and August 2007. Another charge states that he was a director of Empire Communication Technology when he authorised someone to falsely lodge a return to the Registrar of Companies on May 24, 2006. Phang is also accused of having obscene and uncensored films at his Westwood Avenue home on Nov 13, 2007. Yong was charged with six counts of authorising one Ng Chee Tiong to falsely lodge returns to the Registrar of Companies that shares in the Empire Investment Group, of which he was director, were allotted for cash. Mr Subhas Anandan is representing all four, who are claiming trial. Bail arguments will be heard later on Tuesday. The cases have been fixed for a pre-trial conference on March 5. A probe into Sunshine's affairs started in November 2007, two months after the company was placed on the investor alert list by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Sunshine was set up by Phang, who says on the company's website that he has almost 30 years' experience in retail, sales and multinational enterprise building. Sunshine is reported to have attracted 20,000 clients here since it was set up in July 2006.

His secretary walked up to him and asked, 'Boss this morning when you left your house, did you close your gate ?' Boss was not smart enough to understood, so he went back into his office looking a bit puzzled ! When he was about done with his paper work, he suddenly noticed that his zipper was not zipped up. He zipped up and remembering what his secretary had told him, then boss finally understood. He then intentionally went out to ask for a cup of coffee from his secretary. When he reached her desk, He said, 'When you saw the gate open did you see my BMW parked in there ?' The secretary smiled for a moment and said, 'No, Boss I didn't. All I saw was a Kancil 600 with 2 flat tyres.' Boss went back to his office mumbling... kan ni ne......
  9. Hi all, in end Nov last year, I posted an article about the good service rendered to me by a tyre shop boss named Joseph hp no 96395227. His shop is at Ubi Avenue 2. Just wish to get feedbacks from members whether any has bought tyres from him? If have, how is his services rendered including his tyre prices. After sharing with my siblings about his good and friendly service, all of them have patronised him and found him and agreed with my views of him. My siblings also recommended their friends to this tyre shop boss for changing of tyres and through word of mouth, more patronised him. My siblings informed me that Joseph (tyre shop boss) even contacted them and their friends periodically who bought tyres from him to find out how they feel about the tyres that they installed. They are very pleased with his good services and reasonable tyre prices. To those who bought tyres from him, any comments on his services, etc?
  10. Just wondered if there is / are any company that has done this in Singapore? 'Recession angels' give cash, time to communityThursday, March 19, 2009 6:45 PM Big earners buck cut-back trend US 'recession angels' give cash, time to community JUST when you think the villains of the recession like the Bernard Madoffs and the greedy bankers have worsened the economic situation, 'recession angels' want you to know that not all big-earners are out to rip off the hard-hit general public. 20 March 2009 JUST when you think the villains of the recession like the Bernard Madoffs and the greedy bankers have worsened the economic situation, 'recession angels' want you to know that not all big-earners are out to rip off the hard-hit general public. These are generous people who have taken their own money and given it to employees and their communities just as everybody else has been cutting back. Perhaps the best-known recession angel is Mr Leonard Abess Jr, who was recently singled out by US President Obama for his generosity, said ABC News. After selling his Miami bank, Mr Abess handed out US$60 million ($92m) in bonuses from his own pocket among 339 current employees - including executives, tellers, secretaries - and 72 former ones. Cheques ranged from tens of thousands of dollars to more than US$100,000. He said: 'My father was a banker. I grew up at the dinner table with tales of the Depression and tales of what a banker meant to a community, about responsibility, handling other people's money. 'And that these are your neighbours, the people you live with, you see all the time and you have to protect their money.' There are many others who are generous like him. Small-town 'stimulus' Though Alabama pharmacy owner Danny Cottrell did not disburse money in the millions, what he did was enough to touch his neighbours and workers. Mr Cottrell decided to dole out US$16,000 in bonuses to his 24 employees - every full-time worker got US$700 and every part-time employee got US$300. To stimulate the economy in the small town, and he requested that his workers donate 15 percent to a charity or somebody who was in worse shape than they were, and then take the rest and spend it at local businesses. To track the local impact of his 'stimulus', Mr Cottrell handed out the bonuses in US$2 bills. Ms Lonna Jackson, who has worked for seven years as a cashier at Mr Cottrell's pharmacy, feared the worst when he gathered the staff for the announcement. But when he announced the bonuses, she told ABC News: 'We sat there, mouths opened. Some cried. We were all just in shock.' With her US$700, Ms Jackson donated money to a neighbour in need and then bought fabric for her sewing group, which makes baby blankets for neonatal units at area hospitals. She plans on spending the rest of the money on car tyres. And as cashier at the pharmacy, she has seen plenty of those US$2 bills circle back to Mr Cottrell's business. She said: 'I just hope there are more people out there like him.' There are - like the doctor in a Minneapolis suburb who decided to give free medical check-ups to existing patients who lost their insurance because they were laid off. Dr K Anthony Shibley, whose clinic does physician and gynaecology work, said: 'It's not going to kill us to do a little extra work. They probably already have enough bill collectors calling them.' Then there's also Mr Scott Tuttle, president of Livin' Lite Recreational Vehicles, who has been organising a giant food distribution programme with Feed The Children. He expects to give food and care packages to 6,000 people spread out over eight towns in northern Indiana. After coordinating with area churches, truck drivers and the food donors, he then got his hands dirty by packing up boxes with other volunteers. How much time has he put into the effort? He told ABC News: 'I don't know. I haven't kept track of it. It's been a significant amount of time, but it's worth it.' There's also Mr Timothy Tucker - who used to work at high-end restaurants in Seattle and Dallas, catering to well-to-do Americans - who has decided to teach the less fortunate to cook for themselves. He hopes that once they learn various culinary skills, they can land jobs at local restaurants. 'We've never seen anything like this before,' he said of the current economic climate. His classes, taught through the Salvation Army, also feed 400 people a day at a homeless shelter. He said: 'Here, we are able to cook great food and use it to heal people's lives. It's a much bigger thing in life than cooking incredibly beautiful food for people who have a lot of money to pay for it.'
  11. Hi all, I used to work in a company where the boss has the habit of giving ang bao and oranges to all staff. Senior staff get $20 and the rest $10. Is it still a common practice? Regards,

  13. I find is quite disturbing that many in this forum and perhaps in many others agree , that being a boss or employer is that the boss can exercise and exhibit an attitude of 'be it all or nothing' kind of behaviour. Maybe that is true in certain industries and perhaps that will never change but we being humans, must realise that there is an element of : HOW ONE HUMAN SHOULD TREAT ONE ANOTHER'!...and this is a UNIVERSAL TRUTH, no matter where you are and what you do. Of course with the recent news, of a local big bank giving so many employees pink slips does not help, these and many others ( including a thread here) does not help to foster trust and true motivation between employer and employee. Maybe it would be helpful if the others here can give examples of the 'HOW to?' and What not to do' in dealing with your fellow kind, who happen to be an employee or such?
  14. Was watching the Channel U news a few minutes ago. There is a tour agency in Chinatown who cheated customers by receiving cash but issued fake air-tickets. The customers only managed to discover this fraud when they were at the airport. Besides losing the money, some customers have left their passports with the lady boss. Apparently, this China-national lady boss has fled back to China with the money, leaving the husband in Singapore to take the rap.
  15. fret not, you are not alone... Sick of your boss? You are not alone Singapore News // Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Ong Dai Lin [email protected] ARE you unhappy with your boss? You are not alone. Almost one-third of workers in Asia feel the same way as you do. The research by Hay Group Insight, the employee and customer research division of global management consultancy Hay Group, also showed that only 16 per cent of employees in Asia feel they are effective in their jobs. It also found that 35 per cent of employees in Asia feel detached from their work and will only perform the minimum that will satisfy the job requirements. Of this group of employees, 60 per cent intend to leave their company. The research results, which were derived from interviews and surveys over a year, showed that workers in Asia are more frustrated with their bosses than their British counterparts, in part because of the difference in leadership styles.
