  3. We will share a prayer with you. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1234079/1/.html Trial begins for ex-principal accused of misappropriating funds By Kimberly Spykerman | Posted: 29 October 2012 1334 hrs Click to enlarge Photos 1 of 1 Singapore Subordinate Courts (Photo: Anthony Chia, channelnewsasia.com) inShare 10 SINGAPORE : The former principal of Maris Stella High School who was charged with misappropriating nearly S$150,000 was in court on Monday for the opening of the trial. 65-year-old Anthony Tan Kim Hock, who retired in 2009, allegedly committed the offence in the school on 21 separate occasions between May 2004 and September 2009. The prosecution is proceeding with one charge - where Tan is alleged to have misappropriated about S$67,700 from the school's chapel building fund account between March and September 2009. He was still the school's principal then. The remaining 20 charges have been stood down for now. The prosecution has lined up nine witnesses. Three of them - an investigation officer from the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD), a cashier from Mustafa shopping centre and an architect - took the stand on Monday. The court heard that Tan allegedly used the money from the school's chapel building fund to do rebuilding and renovation works for the Champagnat House in Flower Road. The Champagnat House is the residence of the Marist brothers - the lay-religious congregation Tan belongs to. Work began on the house in February 2008 and ended in May 2009. The court also heard that while Tan was not directly supervising the project, bills for some of the works such as stained glass and granite cladding - which involves the adhering of stones to the walls of a building - were sent to him. According to statements that Tan gave to the CAD in 2011, he said that he had already reimbursed the money taken from the chapel building fund. Of the 20 remaining charges that have been stood down, 13 of them involve a man known as Peter Lim - whose relation to Tan is not clear. Tan allegedly used money from the school management committee as well as the director-general of education school fund accounts to pay for items such as seven of Mr Lim's overseas school trips and an open water diving course in Pulau Tioman. The trial continues on Tuesday. - CNA/xq/ms

  7. A man was jailed for eight weeks and banned from driving for five years on Tuesday for causing the death of his elder brother and drink driving. Jaswant Singh, 54, a technician, who had pleaded guilty, was giving his brother, Mr Harbans Singh, then 54, a ride home when the accident happened at the signalised T-junction of Bukit Batok Road by Bukit Batok West Avenue 7 on July 25, 2009. The court heard that they had earlier attended a ceremony at the house of their eldest brother, whose son was getting married the next day. They had taken some beer. Jaswant was riding along the extreme left lane of Bukit Batok Road at about 12.30am that day when he failed to keep a proper lookout ahead for a car that was slowing down when the traffic light changed from green to amber. 10. From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...ang_member.html Posted on 29 Jan 2012 A sister's plea: Help, police! My brother is a 369 gang member A STOMPer would like to share details of her brother's lifestyle as part of a gang which calls themselves '369'. The STOMPer also appeals for police intervention so that the youths can be prevented from committing a serious crime. Said the STOMPer: "I was very concerned when I happened to find a knife and spray paint in my brother's school bag. Hence I decided to stalk him. "He has been mixing with a group of boys in 515/888 Woodlands area. Coincidentally, my guy friend was also approached by them. "They proclaim to be 369. My friend apologised but was forced to join them before they let him off. "After weeks of stalking, I found out my brother was involved in fights and chasing illegal debts, spraying people's houses. "There were times when I called the police for they were carrying weapons, and seemed to be preparing for a fight. The rival group always ran away, upon seeing them chasing with big knives in their hands. "Though the police were alert, my brother and his gang always managed to flee. "I called the police though my brother is involved. I would rather have him getting his punishment now then to really kill someone and get life imprisonment. "They often hang around at Woodlands Block 515/888. They always hang out in a group of 15 and get into fights, bullying the weak. "I witnessed a couple of fights where they surround the victims and bash them up under the nose of people siting at the coffee shops. "Those pictures were downloaded from my brother's FB. They were so outragous to even state their logo, taking away the zeros -- 65369 meaning 6 ave 369 in Hokkien which I got to know after approching people I know who were previously gamg members. "One guy seems to be the head of this group for his girlfriend needs to be accompanied by 2 others wherever she goes, even to the toilet. "I had been trying to approach the police's Secret Societies Branch (SSB) for help but couldn't get through the line. "I can't stalk my brother day and night or alert the police on time hence I go through this channel, hoping people in our area will help keep watch and avoid having disputes with them. "Do not hesitate to call 999 if you see them carrying weapons or getting into fights. You may be saving their future. "I really hope they stop whatever they are doing. They are only a bunch of 16-year-old kiddos."

  12. Sad start to this election. RIP Mr Goh and condolences to the family. Apr 29, 2011 Share Tweet NSP chief's brother dies but campaign goes on By Kor Kian Beng National Solidarity Party secretary-general Goh Meng Seng's elder brother Mr David Goh, who is in his mid-50s, died of a heart attack early on Thursday morning. -- ST PHOTO: SAMUEL HE NATIONAL Solidarity Party secretary-general Goh Meng Seng suffered a family tragedy on the first day of the election campaign. His elder brother, Mr David Goh Meng Hee, who is in his mid-50s, died of a heart attack early on Thursday morning. The elder Mr Goh was a businessman, a member of the Workers' Party and the NSP's principal election agent for the Tampines GRC that the NSP leader is contesting in. Mr Goh Meng Seng, when contacted, said he would carry on the electoral campaign. 'The fight must go on,' he told The Straits Times. 'The reason is that it is his last wish to send me into Parliament. He is the unsung hero of democracy.' A statement from the NSP Central Executive Committee on Thursday said: 'While we mourn the loss of a brother and a great friend, our election campaign will continue unabated. All party events will carry on as scheduled.' The NSP is holding a press conference later on Thursday. Mr Goh's team is facing off the People's Action Party's Tampines GRC team led by Minister Mah Bow Tan,

Lets say even if he spends 1k a month on a korean ride, he only has 1.2k left for others, bills/savings/etc/give mother/etc. He gonna get married soon, how to pay for wedding/hdb/and all like that. i am trying of ways to make him look at the bigger picture. So i need your help guys. To those who currently earn around the amount as my brother, and have a car, how easy/hard is it for your monthly survival. 1) do you guys think its 'safe' to buy a car at his current take-home pay. if so, would a korean be good enough? 2) how can i say it to him nicely to him.

  23. Ever since the X5 was launched, BMW's rivals in the 'soft-roader' market have struggled to keep up. So with the imminent arrival of a smaller version, things are going to be very tough for the likes of the Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70. Whereas the X5 is marketed as a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), the X3 is a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), which means the emphasis is its on-road behavious - the X3 isn't for tackling serious rough stuff. At first there'll be a choice of 231bhp petrol or 204bhp diesel engines, both with a capacity of 3.0 litres and both being in-line sixes. Later on other variants will follow, but whichever powerplant is chosen the car has a top speed of 130mph, although a Sports Package can be specified which takes the top speed up to 135mph for the oil-burner and 139mph for the petrol car. If you like the car to do all the gear changing you'll be able to specify a five-speed auto, but the standard transmission for both models is a six-speed manual. Whatever gearbox is fitted the car will have xDrive, which is an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system that feeds the torque to whichever end of the car can most easily cope with it. When xDrive is combined with BMW's DSC traction control system, you'd have to be driving like a complete lunatic to come unstuck - or at least that's the idea... Kit levels are pretty high, with plenty of electronic gadgetry to keep you out of trouble. Hill Descent Control is included along with ABS, EBD, TC and DSC and some even more obscure acronyms. But if you're desperate to spend even more cash there are all sorts of toys on offer such as sat-nav - the X3 will be at your local BMW dealership from next spring. Richard Dredge (from BBC TopGear)
