  1. 有得救 http://www.channelnewsasia.com/mobile/singapore/made-in-singapore-cancer/1988090.html SINGAPORE: A made-in-Singapore cancer drug is touted to be the first publicly-funded drug candidate discovered and developed in Singapore to make it to trials on humans. In a statement on Thursday (Jul 16), The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School (Duke-NUS), announced the start of the Phase I clinical trial of novel cancer drug candidate, ETC-159. The Phase I clinical trial is meant to evaluate the safety and tolerability of ETC-159 in advanced solid tumours of up to 58 patients, and the first patient was dosed on Jun 18. The first two sites for the trial are the National Cancer Centre Singapore and the National University Hospital, and sites in the US will be added as the trial progresses. The drug is expected to target a range of cancers, including colorectal, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. These cancers are linked to a group of cell signalling pathways known as Wnt signalling, which have been identified to promote cancer growth and spread, said the agencies. ETC-159 acts as an inhibitor of these pathways. "This drug candidate therefore offers a promising novel and targeted cancer therapy that could shape future cancer therapeutic strategies," said A*STAR and Duke-NUS. ETC-159 was discovered and developed through a collaboration between A*STARs Experimental Therapeutics Centre (ETC), Drug Discovery and Development (D3) unit and Duke-NUS since 2009. It was based on the discovery work of Prof David Virshup from Duke-NUS. Prof David Virshup, inaugural Director of the Programme in Cancer and Stem Cell Biology at Duke-NUS, said: As the drug candidate provides a targeted cancer therapy, it could potentially minimise side effects and make cancer treatments more bearable for cancer patients." He added: "It is fitting that Singaporeans might be the first to benefit from this Singapore-developed drug."

  5. Hur........... Had been using 'Colgate' brand for the past 50 over years .... Yahoo news: Colgate Total Toothpaste Includes Chemical Ingredient Linked to Cancer Colgate's top-selling toothpaste, Total, is using a chemical ingredient that has been linked to cancer-cell growth and disrupted development in animals. The antibacterial chemical, triclosan, is used in the toothpaste to fight plaque and gingivitis, according to the company. Total received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1997 following the agency's rigorous process, and the toothpaste is safe, according to Colgate. However, an investigation by Bloomberg into the product found that "some of the scientific findings Colgate put forward to establish triclosan's safety in toothpaste weren't black and white". Colgate's toxicology studies on triclosan submitted to the FDA in connection with Total application had been withheld from view. The FDA released the study earlier in 2014 in response to a lawsuit over a Freedom of Information Act request. Later, the agency put the 35-page study on its website, following inquiries from Bloomberg. Three scientists who reviewed the pages at Bloomberg's request, taking into account new research on triclosan, said the FDA's approval of Total 17 years ago raises questions about whether the agency did appropriate due diligence before giving nod. They added that the approval may not validly stand in light of new research. "The pages show how even with one of the US's most stringent regulatory processes -- FDA approval of a new drug -- the government relies on company-backed science to show products are safe and effective," Bloomberg writes. The news agency noted that Colgate's studies on triclosan showed foetal bone malformations in mice and rats, but the company ignored the findings saying they were not relevant. Meanwhile, Colgate defended Total's effectiveness and safety, saying the product's approval was supported by more than 80 clinical studies involving 19,000 people. "In the nearly 18 years that Colgate Total has been on the market in the US, there has been no signal of a safety issue from adverse-event reports," Colgate spokesman Thomas DiPiazza told Bloomberg. 8. Squeezing breasts can stop cancer Squeezing breasts could prevent cancer, best study ever says 21 hrs ago Getting to second base, the holy grail for hormonal boys, is now science: New research has shown that squeezing breasts could prevent malignant breast cells from causing cancer. This doesn’t give pervy dudes license to grope you on the subway, ladies, but it does mean boob-grabbing should be a regular part of your self-care routine (yes, absolutely try it DIY-style). Experiments found that physical pressure led cells back to normal growth patterns, and that even after compression was no longer applied, the malignant cells stopped growing. Spread the word, boob-lovers of the world. [source]

  11. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is monitoring a recall of approximately 23,000 Great Wall and Chery motor vehicles with engine and exhaust gaskets containing asbestos, a cancer-causing silicate minerals. Both manufacturers have been directed to stop selling the affected vehicles, and consumers are advised not to perform do-it-yourself maintenance that might disturb these gaskets. "All affected consumers will be contacted directly by Great Wall and Chery. In addition, they will provide training, warning stickers and safety advice to repairers. The ACCC will monitor the recall and Workplace Health and Safety Authorities will monitor the workplace safety issues," Said Ms Delia Richard, ACCC deputy chair. A Chery spokesman commented that the automaker made a mistake by building the cars with a batch of parts that were not intended for use in export cars. However, an Australian public affairs official indicated that the recall affects a large portion of the vehicles imported by the two manufacturers. I shall leave it to the readers to decide if it is an honest mistake. Models affected by the recall include the Chery J11 and J3 (below) as well as the Great Wall SA220, V240, X240, V200 and X200 (above). Australia was the testing ground for Chinese carmakers looking to enter larger markets and the recall has dealt a blow to those ambitions. The incident also raises concerns about the quality and safety of products made in China, which has struggled with repeated health scares that include excessive lead found in toys and melamine-tainted milk.
  12. Most would know that diesel engine exhaust emissions are more dirty compared to petrol engines. Even though diesel engines have gotten progressively cleaner in recent years due to strict emissions standards, the World Health Organisation has announced recently that they have uncovered sufficient evidence to link diesel fumes with cases of cancer in human beings. The World Health Organisation which operates under the United Nations says that diesel fumes are a known cause for lung cancer and can increase the risks of bladder cancer. Carcinogen is the term used for describing any substance that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. As mentioned above, diesel engines are progressively getting cleaner. This is largely attributed to the usage of particulate filters, of more precise direct-injection technologies and also to the widespread use of ultra-low-sulphur diesel in some countries such as the United States. But this is not the case in many developing countries. There are still a lot of vehicles, mostly commercial vehicles, in those countries that use old fashioned diesel engines that use pre-chamber type indirect injection. To complicate the matter, the World Health Organization estimates that these vehicles will take a very long time to be replaced with cleaner ones. Chairman of the working group, Dr. Christopher Portier, explained that the scientific find was rather compelling and the group

  18. Bishan double tragedy: jumper "appeared normal" Posted: 15 September 2011 1600 hrs SINGAPORE: Forty-eight-year-old Ng Sock Luan, who jumped from a height at a Bishan apartment block early this year and landed on another woman, was known to have had a history of harbouring suicidal thoughts. Coroner's inquest into her death however revealed that she appeared normal and did not seem to be in any form of distress just hours before her fatal leap on January 10. Her 21-year-old daughter noticed that the administrative assistant had changed into her work attire and seemed to be preparing to go to work at around 7.30am that day. Madam Ng, who was diagnosed with anxiety-depression, had told her loved ones on several occasions that she wanted to commit suicide. As a result of this, her family members had never left her alone since December last year. But she decided to jump from Block 179 Bishan Street 13 at around 11am on the one day they left her alone. Madam Ng landed on 54-year-old Lau Fong Kien who happened to be walking at the ground floor near the block of flats, killing herself and the older woman. State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said Ms Lau was a breast cancer survivor with a strong desire to live having beaten the cancer two years ago. He said that she was a "tragic victim" in the incident and did not see Ms Lau as someone with suicidal tendencies. But Coroner Imran said that Madam Ng was the "exact opposite" and her "balance of mind was disturbed" when she decided to make the fatal fall. Both women succumbed to multiple injuries. State Counsel Agnes Chan pointed out that injuries suffered by Madam Ng were consistent with a fall from height. Ms Chan also told the court that Ms Lau's injuries were similar to those sustained by individuals hit by falling objects. Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced both women dead within minutes of each other. - CNA/ck

  22. Any brudder knows what kind of technology is used in the ERP gantry system? Just imagine the strength of the scanners, maybe some advanced kind of radio wave so powerful that it can suck $$$ from your cashcard. Will your brain juice get sucked dry as well? Are we being exposed to dangerous levels of "sucker rays", the one that aliens use to zap people up into their space ships/flying saucers? Is that why the authorities are thinking of switching to GPS tracking? I mean what if these radio waves wipe out the car owning population and in the end they have nothing left to suck, then HOW? What is there left for them to suck? Hur?? Share your thoughts here . . . . good night, I'm off to bed.
