  1. Can someone help me, I cannot find my thread. I started a thread "small car for lady" on Tuesday, now I cannot find where it is.
  2. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/28/upshot/dont-want-me-to-recline-my-airline-seat-you-can-pay-me.html?_r=1&abt=0002&abg=1 I fly a lot. When I fly, I recline. I don’t feel guilty about it. And I’m going to keep doing it, unless you pay me to stop. I bring this up because of a dispute you may have heard about: On Sunday, a United Airlines flight from Newark to Denver made an unscheduled stop in Chicago to discharge two passengers who had a dispute over seat reclining. According to The Associated Press, a man in a middle seat installed the Knee Defender, a $21.95 device that keeps a seat upright, on the seatback in front of him. A flight attendant asked him to remove the device. He refused. The woman seated in front of him turned around and threw water at him. The pilot landed the plane and booted both passengers off the flight. Obviously, it’s improper to throw water at another passenger on a flight, even if he deserves it. But I’ve seen a distressing amount of sympathy for Mr. Knee Defender, who wasn’t just instigating a fight but usurping his fellow passenger’s property rights. When you buy an airline ticket, one of the things you’re buying is the right to use your seat’s reclining function. If this passenger so badly wanted the passenger in front of him not to recline, he should have paid her to give up that right. I wrote an article to that effect in 2011, noting that airline seats are an excellent case study for the Coase Theorem. This is an economic theory holding that it doesn’t matter very much who is initially given a property right; so long as you clearly define it and transaction costs are low, people will trade the right so that it ends up in the hands of whoever values it most. That is, I own the right to recline, and if my reclining bothers you, you can pay me to stop. We could (but don’t) have an alternative system in which the passenger sitting behind me owns the reclining rights. In that circumstance, if I really care about being allowed to recline, I could pay him to let me. Donald Marron, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office, agrees with this analysis, but with a caveat. Recline negotiations do involve some transaction costs — passengers don’t like bargaining over reclining positions with their neighbors, perhaps because that sometimes ends with water being thrown in someone’s face. Mr. Marron says we ought to allocate the initial property right to the person likely to care most about reclining, in order to reduce the number of transactions that are necessary. He further argues that it’s probably the person sitting behind, as evidenced by the fact people routinely pay for extra-legroom seats. Mr. Marron is wrong about this last point. I understand people don’t like negotiating with strangers, but in hundreds of flights I have taken, I have rarely had anyone complain to me about my seat recline, and nobody has ever offered me money, or anything else of value, in exchange for sitting upright. If sitting behind my reclined seat was such misery, if recliners like me are “monsters,” as Mark Hemingway of The Weekly Standard puts it, why is nobody willing to pay me to stop? People talk a big game on social media about the terribleness of reclining, but then people like to complain about all sorts of things; if they really cared that much, someone would have opened his wallet and paid me by now. A no-recline norm would also have troubling social justice implications — for short people. Complaints about knee room are not spread equally across our society. They are voiced mostly by the tall, a privileged group that already enjoys many advantages. I don’t just mean they can see well at concerts and reach high shelves. Tall people earn more money than short people, an average of $789 per inch per year, according to a 2004 paper in the Journal of Applied Psychology. The economists Anne Case and Christina Paxson advanced the theory that tall people earn more because they have higher I.Q.s. Taller men on the dating website OkCupid receive more messages from women and have more sex partners than their short counterparts. Instead of counting their blessings, or buying extra-legroom seats with some of their extra income, the tall have the gall to demand that the rules of flying be reconfigured to their advantage, just as everything else in life already has been. Sometimes — one Upshot editor who shall remain nameless included — they even use the Knee Defender to steal from their fellow passengers. Now that’s just wrong.

  9. Recently, I see a few cases where criminals have been granted to escape the death penalties... I understand the law was amended to allow judges to have discretionary powers in deciding on death penalty. BUT: 1) Shouldn't the new law start from a date in future and only applies to cases which are not decided yet? 2) Why is it criminals who have been sentenced to death in the past are now reviewed? New law can be back-dated? 3) Those criminals already sentenced to death a few years ago - why are they still ALIVE today? Shouldn't they been dead a few years ago?
  10. Came across this confession on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/nusconfessions/posts/540863029323332 I have been together with my boyfriend for slightly under a year. Everything about him fits my criteria for a partner- tall and well-built, intelligent, caring and probably one of the sweetest guys around. Yet, there is one trait of him that has been perturbing me for the longest time. It is that of his frugality. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not one of those gold-digger girls who is looking for a rich husband. Case in point, if I were, my boyfriend would have been struck off the list long ago. I understand that love cannot be measured by money, but yet it seems that if money is perpetually a concern to my boyfriend when he spends on me, it just seems to me that I am perhaps of less value than a few wads of cash. Moreover, I am far from unreasonable in making him spend more than he can manage. My recent birthday celebration just made me really sad. He brought me to Sushi Tei and a gave me a sweet handmade card. Perhaps to some of you this may still be acceptable I'm not sure, but to me this was a complete disappointment. For a birthday celebration, Sushi Tei seriously? This would be the kind of restaurant I would casually meet up with friends at, and not some place I would patronise for a special occasion. A card and no present? Yes, a card is sweet, but another way of looking at it is: cheap. I get very envious when I see my friend's boyfriends bringing them to classy romantic dining establishments and gifting them with expensive presents on their birthdays. And this is when their boyfriends are still studying and just living on the pay from their part-time jobs. If they can afford to do so, why not my boyfriend? To make things clear, I myself am very generous to my boyfriend in gifting him with presents. I am not trying in any way to cheat his money. I know my boyfriend loves me but I sometimes can't help but think if his thrifty habits (read: stingy habits) is something I can live with for life. At the same time, this is a relationship I won't bear to give up. Perhaps in life, it is inevitable that you win some and lose some. Girl laments about how she wishes to be pampered on special occasions but got bashed by everyone for being a gold digger. Hmmm.. Where do you bring your girlfriend/wife for dates, birthdays? Fine line between thriftiness and stinginess. I have no qualms about going Sushi Tei for birthdays.

  13. Hi ALL IT Gurus My fibre broadband modem n D-Link router are installed in main hall.. all set up by my ISP last night. Andriod mobile devices n tablet received signal at full bar EVEN IN ALL BEDROOMS. Very Fast connection. However for my studyroom desktop, i only receive ONE BAR of wireless signal. I try to connect, key in e usual security password..it say 'windows does not connect to internet'. Thinking that bedroom signal could be weak thus unable to connect internet. BUT my mobile devices/tablet ARE STILL receiving full bar signal even placed next to my desktop. could it be my wireless lan card in my desktop (2-3yrs old HP Presario Windows 7) are not 100% compatible to fibre network, WLAN card failing suddenly or some configuration has nt done properly? Any good advise by the IT experts?

  19. Background: Installed a reputable tuning box two days ago. After install did 3 cold starts, another few warm start. Travelled around 100km with no issue at all. In fact car has never been so smooth. Did about 30km of spirited driving at lim chu kang yesterday 4am. Power improvement is exceptional. Today:Had a cold start in the morning, no problem. Nothing abnormal. Then followed by another 2 warm starts, plus some short journey in between. Then wash car AND ahem, radiator using hose. Somehow the water trapped in the radiator was blown onto engine bay by the fan. Car still drive normally and was shifted to dry area. Then I went on to reposition my tuning box without touching any connectors. After which the car could still start, idle and rev normally to 2k rpm. So close hood and go home. 1 hour later want to go out. Car could start but few seconds only the engine will stall. Repeated 3 times and finally just press accelerator a bit to keep it going. Few seoncds later engine can idle liao. More water was sprayed onto the engine when the radiator fan started going...wiped dry. Car no abnormality. Drives and idles normally. So my problem with the idle was more possibly caused by tuning box or the water?

  22. The Manpower Ministry has ruled that with immediate effect, employers shall not allow their foreign domestic workers to clean the exterior of windows unless two safety conditions are met. Firstly, the employer or an adult is physically present to supervise the maid. And, secondly, window grilles must be installed and locked at all times during the cleaning process. MOM said the new rules will apply to all homes, except for windows that are at ground level or along common corridors. It emphasises that anyone who cleans the exterior of their windows at home should follow similar safety requirements. The ministry explained that many foreign domestic workers do not come from high-rise environments and may not be used to Singapore's urban living environment. They are therefore likely to be unaware of the risks in a high-rise domestic setting. Apart from window cleaning, employers should take necessary steps to eliminate the risks involved in other tasks by following the Dos and Don'ts covered in MOM's guidebooks and pamphlets. If foreign domestic workers are required to hang laundry outside the window using bamboo poles, employers should ensure that they do not stand on an elevated platform or tip-toe while handling the poles, and do not overload the pole with too many clothes. MOM said it will be sending a circular to all existing foreign maid employers to inform them of the tightened safety requirements. The ministry will also be updating its training materials for first-time maids and their employers. MOM warns that failure to comply with these tightened requirements constitutes a breach of the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Passes) Regulations. Employers who fail to comply may be prosecuted and permanently barred from hiring a foreign domestic worker. MOM said it's deeply concerned with the recent spate of fatalities involving foreign domestic workers. Since January this year, there have been nine work-related fall from heights fatalities, compared to four cases for the whole of 2011 and eight in 2010. The ministry's investigations show that five of the nine fatalities were related to foreign donestic workers cleaning windows in an unsafe manner. Two arose from hanging laundry, while the causes of the last two are pending further investigation. The ministry said this tragic and unnecessary loss of lives could have been prevented if foreign domestic workers and their employers took safe work practices seriously.
