  2. Woman appears in High Court with non-stop speech Singapore: A woman fighting a 6-year-old case against the Government for wrongful dismissal, caused drama in the High Court when she launched into a speech and continually disobeyed the judge to stop. Former civil servant, Linda Lai Swee Lin, is hoping to get her old job back in the Land Office. Appearing in court Thursday, she read out a prepared one-page statement, ignoring a clearly-irritated Justice Lai Siu Chiu who warned her several times to stop. The judge also warned of contempt of court charges to Lai who continued reading even as other witnesses took their oaths in the witness stand. Police officers had to be called in to remind the woman to remain silent. She eventually did, but not for long. The hearing continues on Friday. Perhaps her dismissal by Land Office is due to her talkativeness at work which impact staff's productivity

  7. Although it has been evident for some time that General Motors' sale of its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd., we didn't expect for word to come down today that the negotiations are dead and the brand will be wound down. Unfortunately, judging by a press release just issued by GM, that's exactly what will be happening. According to John Smith, GM's vice president of corporate planning and alliances, "One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest Hummer, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for Hummer along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed." As we learned from the Saab sale saga, GM announcing that the brand will be wound down does not completely extinguish hope for another buyer to slip in in the 11th hour, but it does seem highly improbable that a new party will pick up where the negotiations with China's Tengzhong left off. In the statement available after the jump, GM does not specify what killed the planned sale of the brand, but rumors in recent months suggested that the Chinese government was not keen to sign off on the deal. At the moment, it is unclear what will happen to Hummer's H2 and H3/H3T models, but it is likely that the tooling and manufacturing rights will be sold off to other companies. As with the wind-down of its Saturn and Pontiac brands, GM has pledged to honor Hummer warranties and continue to supply service and parts.
  8. My left rear door autolock, for some reason, is jammed in the lock position. The door cannot unlock manually from the inside and the outside. This is the 2nd autolock that's failed, the 1st being the left front door. I'm really tired of changing these lousy quality autolocks, and it's a matter of time before the rest of the autolock conk out. I'm thinking of just removing the door lock actuator so the door can be manually lock/unlock. Is this a simple task that can be DIYed?
  9. KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign-registered vehicles will only be allowed to pump maximum 20 litres of fuel when travelling within 50km radius from the border, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Enforcement authorities at the checkpoints were also directed to ensure such vehicles leave the country with no more than 20 litres of fuel in each tank, said the Domestic, Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism Minister. Ministry officers were in the midst of issuing a circular on the matter to petrol stations in affected areas. "This measure is to curb increasing cases of fuel smuggling, as the prices for fuel are subsidised and cheaper compared to prices set by neighbouring countries such as in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia," he said. THAT means if u go in with 3/4 tank of petrol ( about 30 litre ) under Singapore ruling, you have to throw your petrol somewhere or burn it before you can leave Malaysia and return to Singapore under Malaysia ruling. Very stressed lifestyle.. Here government make us go over with 3/4 tank and there the government make us return with 20 litre maximum ( 1/3 tank ) . Indeed, Singaporeans are suckers being pushed around everywhere in our own countries and other countries. The Singapore government must be smiling and preparing for another major "upsize" of salaries since billions of petrol dollars will flow from Malaysia into Singapore coffers even when the Sg government did absolutely nothing. No wonder they are the best paid in the world.

  11. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_453761.html ZHEJIANG University, famed for its engineering prowess and research strength, will be the Chinese partner of Singapore's fourth university. The collaboration with Zheda, as the university is popularly known in China, completes the three-way partnership of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SU), linking it with premier institutions in both the East and the West. SU, which had earlier announced its partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, inked the agreement with Zheda on Thursday. It was one of four deals signed at the St Regis hotel between Singapore and China, all witnessed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao. The leaders, who had a meeting before the signings, also saw the signing of deals on the setting up of a China Cultural Centre, a civil servants exchange programme and the sending of two pandas to Singapore in 2011. Mr Hu, who is here on a three-day state visit, urged Singapore and China to expand on their cultural exchanges during his meeting with Mr Lee, building on the momentous panda transfer and the universities' tie-up.
  12. While I can afford the exorbitant SC charges, I really hate it that I have been walking by it everyday to and fro the carpark.
  13. My sister car got into an accident 2wks ago. She was driving at our house service road when this car dashed out from the parking lot, damaging her front bumper(right side), right fender, right headlight, wiper tank reservoir. The other party initiated insurance claim which we send to our workshop to settle. Was given a replacement car also.I shall not mention names. Now the car is back. Right fender replaced, front bumper replaced, right headlight replaced. The problem now lies with the headlight. One side is very new and one side is old, very obvious that the headlight has been replaced, most prob ue to an accident. I asked my workshop they mentioned that they will only replaced one side that is damage, n if i want to replace the left one, it would be from my own pocket. I find it rather unfair as the damage was casued by someoe else, which they have to compensate the damage. However, when u see the car, it is obvious of the difference in the headlight. Someone cause the accident n yet i still have to fork out $$ to make the 2 headlight look same, or bear with the fact that my car has the one side new n one side old look. I had heard from frnds that they send their car back to agent for insurance claim n that they would get both the headlight replaced to make it look even. theres no such thing as replacing one side only as headlight always comes in a pair. so can i go back to my workshop n demand for a new left side headlight oso. or its a fact tt they will onli replaced one side n i have to LLST.

  15. FAS says promoters of Liverpool match breached contract by playing anthem By Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 31 July 2009 1617 hrs Photos 1 of 1 English Premier League club Liverpool's Spanish striker Fernando Torres (L) dribbles past an opponent during a friendly football match against Singapore's national team. SINGAPORE: The promoters of Liverpool FC's tour to Singapore could be in trouble due to a breach of contract with Singapore's Football Association (FAS). After several queries from members of the public, the FAS finally clarified its stand on the issue of the National Anthem at last Sunday's game. Close to 50,000 fans showed up to watch the Singapore Lions take on English giants Liverpool FC. Prior to the friendly match, the match promoters from Profitable Group, together with the FAS, had agreed that Singapore's national anthem and the Liverpool club "anthem", would not be played as part of the official pre-match ceremony. However, that agreement was broken when the Liverpool anthem was played, following the announcement that the Guest of Honour, Singapore's President SR Nathan, was about to inspect both teams on the field. The FAS said it is shocked and disappointed with the breach of agreement by the match promoters. Deputy General Secretary of the FAS, P Sivakumar, added that the promoters could find themselves in trouble due to other issues, not revealed at press time, as well.
  16. Everyday when I drive, I am usually in hurry. So I use the overtaking lane all the time and (sometimes) speed. Usually people will get out of my way and signal left, as is the normal case for the OT lane, or if there is a jam on the OT lane, i will slow and follow the front car at a far distance. However I notice every day niowadays when I am using OT lane there are many kayu around travelling usually at about 50 km/h and are like a brick. I flash light... horn... do everything, they pretend they dont see and just continue going at 50 km/h.... Last week I on the PIE heading to tuas fr changi... one kayu i trail all the way... P plate somemore... damn si beh sian... I eventually overtake, after traling her from eunos to adam !!! She drive at 55 km/h... as shown on my HUD... i even wave at her besides flashing and signal right, she continue driving like a brick. I dont know why these type of drivers exist but everyday I face them and it is getting really sianzzzz..... why cant they just leave the OT lane for people who are in a hurry and are skilled drivers. If they are not comfortable then they should take middle or left lane lah....aiyah... dont know what to say....
  17. this afternoon, was turning right from marymount road to proceed to lornie road, was in front of the bishan fire station. i was in the middle lane and this merc, SJM 9**4 on the extreme right lane..saw his wheels moving out of his lane so gave him a slight horn..we are side by side, my driver seat is in line with his passenger seat (like half of his car is in front of me)... thereafter he signalled left and immediately switch lane, i got to jam brake to avoid any accident and gave him a loud horn..and this driver who is obviously in the wrong has the cheek to brake and slow down and i got to jam brake another time.. come on la uncle...GROW UP!!!

  19. I have new neighbor who moved in a few weeks ago and have a dog that is locked up in at home all the time. I only saw my neighbor once as he is always out. The dog will always bark at the door at night. I am not complaining about the barking, i really pity the dog as I feel the dog is being neglected. This is abuse. This is the reason why I do not keep pets, I am afraid that I will neglect it. To all the boys n gals who want to keep pets. THINK BEFORE U ACT!!!

  21. http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,...,191705,00.html? School bars students from mall - but is ban working? Some teens moved to defy rule; parents upset as well February 04, 2009 HE LOOKS around carefully, his legs tensed and ready to run. STRICT: A Coral Secondary teacher talking to a student at a HDB void deck near the school, which banned students from loitering anywhere after school while in uniform. TNP PICTURE: JULIAN LEE The coast seems clear, and his friends nod their confirmation. He dashes into McDonald's, and emerges 10 minutes later, clutching takeaway bags in triumph. His friends cheer, and they move off swiftly, not looking back. The boy has just committed an offence. But it's not against the fast-food outlet - it's against his school. Coral Secondary School forbids any student in uniform from entering the nearby White Sands shopping mall in Pasir Ris, among other things. The rule, which was imposed several years ago, also forbids students in uniform from hanging out at the neighbouring housing estate. WHY NOT LET THEM BE? Not all schools are as strict - our photographer visited Bishan Junction 8 yesterday and saw many students in uniform wandering around the shopping centre freely and without fear. TNP PICTURE: KELVIN CHNG The boy told The New Paper: 'I'm not supposed to go to White Sands at all, unless I want to go to the library after school. 'Even then, I can go only after I fill in a form and get it approved by the Discipline Mistress or Operations Manager.' And then he pointed to the school handbook, which has an extract from the school's rule book. It states that the school has banned its students in uniform from loitering anywhere after school. It expects the students to go home straight from school. Only library okay It wants them to 'stay away from White Sands Shopping Mall at all times except to visit the community library after school after seeking approval from HOD/Student Management, Operations Manager, Vice-Principal or Principal'. When asked to comment on the rule, principal Veronica Ng responded through Madam Kathleen Ch'ng, the head of the department of student management: 'Coral Secondary places much emphasis on inculcating in our students good habits like using time prudently. 'As such, it is in their interest not to loiter in the malls after school.' But many students are not too pleased about this. Said one Sec 3 student: 'It's crazy. Some of us don't have lunch at home. We have to eat outside, but we're not allowed to eat at White Sands. 'We're not even allowed to just go in there to buy food to take home with us.' A Sec 2 student said that even her teacher did not see the logic behind such a rule. Her classmate added: 'Other students get to hang out here after school. Why can't we?' The school is so serious about the rule that it assigns teachers to patrol the shopping mall and neighbouring areas after school. Offenders are sent for a two-hour detention. And sometimes even the innocent get caught. Said a Sec 2 student: 'One of my friends, who waits for her mother near the shopping mall after school every day, almost got a detention. 'She was saved by a bunch of classmates who explained to the operations manager.' Some parents are also upset by this rule. Said the mother of a Sec 2 student: 'I was told that my daughter had to go home and change out of her uniform before she can buy lunch at White Sands. 'So instead of buying lunch and going home, she has to go home to change, then go out to buy lunch and go home again.' Family lunch impossible A father was particularly riled that he couldn't even have lunch with his daughter in peace. 'It's just stupid. The teachers don't seem to care that students may be with their parents. So I have to keep watching out for teachers, or my daughter may get caught.' But many students are resigned to the strict regulation. As another Sec 2 student put it: 'My mother tells me to just be careful and don't get caught.' One parent, whose son left the school three years ago, said: 'No choice lah, just tolerate for four years and be done with it.' Said a Sec 4 student: 'I don't really care any more. If I get caught again, I'll just go for detention again. It's no big deal.' Teachers are also posted to the housing estate near the school to prevent students from loitering there. A Sec 2 pupil said: 'After school hours, we can't go to the mini-mart in the HDB estate and it's just across the road.' It is understood that even students who simply walk through the estate can accosted by a patrolling teacher. This reporter saw a teacher stop a group of students there last Friday. According to a parent, the strict rules were imposed following complaints from residents in the area. Said the same parent: 'If noise is such a problem, then remove the playground. It's always noisier than the students. 'In any case, teachers aren't supposed to be security guards. I don't think MOE pays them to guard void decks.' But not everyone opposes the strict rules. One Sec 2 student said: 'I agree with the school, that loitering can lead to trouble.' One parent admitted: 'Ultimately, parents and teachers are both concerned for the pupils. I may not like the ban, but it shows that the school's making an effort for its students.'
  22. I know our drivers do not understand what is road hogging. Fine. Today along AYE towards Jurong, there was a police van, YES a police van with blinkers on and traveling on lane 1. Although its a van, it is still a police vehicle moreover with blinkers on. This wonderful grey RX300 decide to stick to its lane and refuse to give way from Bukit Merah to Normanton. I applaud his action and bravery. Maybe wanna test if the police van got install camera or not.
