  5. hi guys, Here's my question. is it possible to buy a deregistered car in singapore and don pay the cost of actuallyusin it on the road?(no COE,etc etc) and just keep it? like those local race team, i here those cars have so much mods in them that they are pure track cars? since they are not registered, they are definitely not allowed on roads rite. lets say, i like this old car which is about to be scrapped. can i just pay the body value and keep the car somewhere(ie on private property)? or if u deregister a car, u die die have to scrap it or export it? I don intend to makea track car, but a car for another competition purpose in future. Is this possible? thanks guys. cheers

  8. For some big cars, it is quite hard to do parallel parking, especially to gauge the front of the car. I am thinking whether to either, 1) Drill four holes to the front kit and install another "rear" sensors with "Beep beep" sound to the front (cheaper). 2) Install front camera and connect to a LCD monitor for viewing and gauging (more costly). Any other better suggestion?? Thank you...
  9. Japan's Honda Motor on Monday recalled more than two million vehicles worldwide over an airbag defect that could pose a fire risk. Honda said the recall covers about 2,033,000 vehicles which were produced between August 2000 and December 2005, including over one million in North America and 668,000 in Japan. Subject to the recall are a total of 13 types of vehicles including popular Fit and Accord models. Front passenger airbag inflators could have been assembled with an improperly manufactured propellant component, Japan's third largest automaker said. That could cause the container of the inflator to rupture in the event of a crash, posing a fire risk or injuring passengers, it added. The same inflator problem has also caused top automaker Toyota to recall millions of vehicles globally. Toyota has earlier said it acted as it received a complaint from a Japanese customer who said his passenger seat was burned from the defect. Honda said the company had received no complaint or reports of injuries on its own. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/honda-recalls-2m-vehicles/1194544.html

  13. Sometimes also unavoidable. Got children fell asleep and must wait somewhere. With this kind of weather... OK let's try harder to off. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/environment/stiffer-fines-for-repeat-offenders-of-vehicle-engine-idling-from-june-1 SINGAPORE - The National Environment Agency (NEA) will increase the penalty for repeat offenders who leave their vehicle engines idling from June 1, as part of ongoing efforts to further improve Singapore's ambient air quality and safeguard public health. The move serves as a stronger deterrent against idling vehicle engines, NEA said in a statement on Friday (April 29). It added that the higher penalty for repeat offenders is being imposed following an upward trend of such offences. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of enforcement cases grew from about 3,200 in 2013, to 3,800 in 2014, and 5,100 in 2015. During the first three months of 2016, NEA took action against 1,489 errant motorists for idling engine offences. Under the Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, it is an offence to leave the engine of a motor vehicle running when it is stationary for reasons other than traffic conditions. Starting from June 1, motorists caught leaving their vehicle engines idling for a second or subsequent time may compound the offence by paying a composition sum of $100, up from the current $70. If the composition sum is not paid, the errant motorist is liable to a maximum court fine of $5,000 upon conviction. The regulations apply to all motorists driving all types of motor vehicles, except: vehicles that require their engines to be switched on for operation of on-board machinery, such as chiller trucks, concrete mixers; taxis/buses in a queue at their designated stops, stands or terminals waiting to pick up/drop off passengers; vehicles that are used for law enforcement or emergency purposes, such as ambulances, SCDF or police vehicles; vehicles undergoing inspection or maintenance. NEA said signs have been installed at hotspots to remind motorists about the new regulations. It urged motorists to turn off their engines after parking their vehicles. Members of the public who spot parked idling vehicles are encouraged to report them to NEA through its hotline (1800 2255 632), email ([email protected]) or the myENV app. Details such as the vehicle registration number, location, date and time of the incident should be included.
  14. An insider from a workshop that specialises in car accident repair: Cars that crashed till insurance declare total write off are usually sent for scrap. But there’re workshops that buy them at paper value, which can be more than $30K or even $50K off market value. They cut/saw off the accident part, e.g. entire front and buy from scrap yard and weld it to the car. Then slowly repair the car and finally sell it back into the market, usually with a new registration number plate. Even previous owner cannot recognise. Really wonder how the car handles with a body that was welded using 2 car bodies. And all the OEM / compatible parts being used in the engine bay. If accident, I guess this car will crumple quite differently from the original build of the car. And the profit is quite good for the workshop when they eventually sell it at market value. They usually do this for cars with high margin e.g Lexus, Merc etc. Imagine the new owner who buys this type of cars, sure full of problems down the road. Buyers beware when a deal looks good, it could be one of such cars. And if everything in the engine bay looks brand new for an old car, you know something is amiss. Anyone suspect he/she has driven or bought such a car before?
  15. i'm looking hard at cars with a depre less than 10k/year and have traction control and 6 airbags. Another additional bonus requirement would have been preferably crash tested by IIHS (Euro ncap is unlikely for these asian vehicles) Basically to me, IIHS testing is probably the most rigorous and independent testing standard. So i would take that as the gold standard. I've not really bothered with AseanNCAP before but i guess still better than nothing. They don't do frontal overlaps from my cursory glance. So far i've short listed, a) Elantra http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/hyundai/elantra-4-door-sedan a pity that i30 has 2 airbags for it's price ... https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/hyundai/i30/27355 b) Vios - asean ncap 5 stars for all it's worth... http://www.aseancap.org/v2/?p=3919 c) Axio - has toyota safety sense - i'm guessing same as vios? - but additional bonus of safety sense. Can do collision mitigation braking d) Corolla just creeping in under 10k depre with the latest COE and finally a full airbag complement http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/toyota/corolla-4-door-sedan/2018 e) Vezel - has honda sensing as a 1k option - doesn't do well for a small overlap but still G for moderate overlap - but with the honda sensing, that would avoid some easily avoidable frontal collisions http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/honda/hr-v-4-door-suv If there's any model i missed out. do let me know. mitubishi attrage has supposedly 6 airbags, but i can't find any crash testing data.

  23. The love for cars transcends all boundaries. Just the other night when I was washing my car, a little nod of acknowledgement turned into a conversation that could've passed for one between two long-lost friends, between a 37-year old Toyota 86 owner and myself, who have never met prior. My other half struggles to understand this. How can people from different social, geographical and cultural backgrounds, of different age groups, get together and talk for hours on end about metal boxes on four wheels? But cars are more than that. Cars are special things that can unite mankind better than any religion in the world. The love for cars can begin from as young an age as one, till the day we die. And thanks to the availability of online forums, car enthusiasts have a place to pour their hearts out, whether it's advice for the next mod, best makan places to drive to, or anything under the sun, really. One such forum is MyCarForum (MCF), the official forum of sgCarMart.com. And one rather special member is Mr. Zhou, better known as kdash. A 30-year old civil engineer and a father of two, kdash's love for cars began in the 80s. "I am a sucker for manual 80s and 90s cars from the time when I was growing up and also 'pop-culture' cars such as the DeLorean DMC-12 (Back to the Future); the Toyota AE86, the Mazda RX-7 FD3S and the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 (Initial D)," he says. As a relatively new car owner who's on his second Toyota Sienta, kdash joined MCF to learn more about cars and at the same time, to make new friends. After joining, he was encouraged by some forum members who responded positively to his 'newbie' questions and that prompted him to continue being active in MCF. He believes that MCF provides an excellent platform where people can ask questions, learn about a particular subject or two and browse through previous posts to find the answers they seek. A big draw for kdash is the many experienced car enthusiasts active on MCF who are ready, willing and able to answer his questions and share their personal opinions on new cars, car maintenance and the car industry in general. "There are also threads on other non car-related topics, and MCF members are generally quick to help and give advice. The various opinions and views shared on many topics also help to give me a broader and more balanced view of the issues discussed." Of course, in return, he also does his part to contribute positively to the forum as much as he can. With MCF, kdash found a community of active forum members who are friendly and ready to accept newcomers like himself. The MCF members actively discuss the various hot topics of the day, and are always ready to share a joke and not take things too seriously. In his daily surfing of MCF so far, there are always funny, interesting and encouraging posts, which make his day and compels him to come back day after day. Like many, kdash is appreciative and respectful of all the views of senior members and most importantly, he likes that everyone knows when to be serious and when to relax and joke around. "I believe that as time passes, people will be able to get a glimpse of who you are by what you post, and that fosters the friendship and familiarity, which I see in MCF currently for the regulars. I feel that I am generally accepted in the forum, and encouraged to find and meet like-minded individuals here." That newfound friendship, however, is not limited to the web. After two months of joining MCF, kdash managed to make friends and got involved in some of the informal activities like meet-ups, lunches, and even a running group. "It is always good to be able to put a face to some of the members and get to know one another better so that we can better understand the context when someone posts in the forum," he says. With all the interactions and interest in MCF, kdash hopes that MCF will continue to be around for many years to come, and hopes to also be able to contribute positively to that effect. Like the Toyota 86 owner I met while washing my car, kdash and the other MCF members prove that the love for cars transcends all boundaries. And judging from that love, you won’t have to hope hard, kdash.
  24. Hi all, I need advice on new cars with OMV not exceeding $20,000, equipped with handbrake and has the signal lever on the right side, Any new car models that fit the criteria except Lancer EX? I am not looking at SUVs due to physical limitations. Thanks
  25. A heady year with many new policies. Amongst the many new laws, the VES and the diesel tax will have the greatest impact on our local car buyers. Last year saw the top ten list filled with predictable best sellers from Honda, Toyota and Mercedes. Will that change? IMO, the best sellers this year will be quite similar, as dealer will still have existing stock of the top sellers, and even though the surcharge goes up, it only occurs next year in Jan 2018. So we should see a small rush for them, and perhaps even a rush for the diesel based best sellers like the BMW 116d and 216d. As a reference, I have included the best sellers for 2016: Top ten for 2015: http://business.asiaone.com/news/toyota-surges-no-1-brand-singapore Top ten for 2014: http://www.carbuyer.com.sg/features/399-can-you-guess-singapore-s-best-selling-car http://focus2move.com/mercedes-e-class-best-selling-car-singapore/ http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/article.php?AID=10795 Top ten for 2013: http://www.lifestyleasia.com/380529/top-selling-car-in-singapore-2013/
