  4. After looking thru quite a few surveys about the earning power of working individuals, I have come to a conclusion that if you are 30 and above and have at least a diploma or general degree and is above 30 yrs of age...you should be earning a gross definite salary of at least $5000 per mth ( if not more!!) excluding bonus etc ... If you are not doing so..it would mean only one thing...YOU ARE DAMN HOPELESS! ...by current Sillypore Standards. Any bros/sis who would disagree with me?
  5. Prima Food fined $5,000 for sale of contaminated food By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent PRIMA Food, the parent company of PrimaDeli, was fined the maximum of $5,000 on Friday for selling contaminated food. A representative of the company, Mr Kenneth Chew, pleaded guilty to having hazelnut paste containing the salmonella enteritidis bacteria at its Keppel Road premises last Nov 30. The hazelnut paste was used to make its chocolate cakes sold in its 38 outlets. More than 200 people were affected after eating the contaminated cakes. The food poisoning outbreak - Singapore's largest in recent years - also led to the closure of its outlets for three weeks last December. Screenings done by the Health Ministry showed that 14 food handlers from the factory and some of the outlets tested positive for the salmonella bug. The court heard that Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority inspected the factory, collected samples from the ingredients used to make cakes and sent them for laboratory analysis. Three samples were found positive for salmonella enteriditis, which causes symptoms such as fever, vomiting and abdominal pains. AVA prosecutor Hoi Min Fah asked the court to impose the maximum fine on the company, saying that it has the duty to ensure that food products made are wholesome and fit to eat. He said the the salmonella bug has been reported to cause massive food poisoning, and in some severe cases resulting in death. Pleading for leniency, Mr Chew told District Judge Sarjit Singh that since it started 14 years ago, the company had never failed to get an A rating for high standard of hygiene, sanitation and food manufacturing processes. When the problem came to light, the company took full responsibility and apologised to all those who came down with food poisoning. Immediate steps were taken to contain the contamination. More than $1 million had been paid to its franchisees incluidng more than $200,000 to consumers. The company's insurers are still processing some claims. Deputy general manager of Prima Food Pansy Wong who was in court said since reopening of its outlets in January, business had returned to normal. 'It was very encouraging,' she said. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_214370.html
  6. Two fined for removing evidence By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent TWO men working for a large parallel importer pleaded guilty yesterday to removing evidence that had been seized by Singapore Customs officers in a probe into a case of suspected tax evasion. In the first case of its kind here, Ng Chee Siang, 25, was fined $12,000, and his accomplice Chua Wee Meng, 38, $8,000 in a district court. The offence took place last June, when a party of Customs officers armed with a search warrant raided the Auto Touch Credit office in Kampong Ubi. The pair, employees in the company's purchasing department, had tried to leave the premises with a file that had been seized. They could each have been jailed for up to 18 months for what they did. Auto Touch Credit is the main company behind Pinnacle Motors, a retailer of parallel imported cars, which posted sales in excess of $250 million last year. The statement of facts by a Customs prosecutor said that the officers seized several files during the raid, on suspicion that the company was under-declaring the value of its car imports to evade taxes. During the operation, Ng, holding one of the seized files, was spotted heading for the exit. A Customs officer stopped him and retrieved it. A few hours later, Chua, Auto Touch's purchasing manager, was seen leaving the office with the file. Ignoring a Customs officer who shouted at him to stop, Chua ran for a staircase, where he handed the file to Ng. The pair headed for the carpark via different exits, but a Customs officer intercepted them and retrieved the file. They were arrested three months later. District Judge Toh Yung Cheong, handing down the sentence yesterday, said Ng and Chua would have received jail terms if any evidence had been destroyed. In his mitigation plea, the men's lawyer, Mr Foo Cheow Ming of KhattarWong, said his clients were 'not rogues, but utter fools'. He said they were 'hardworking, upcoming and basically decent young men' who had acted 'out of a misplaced sense of loyalty to the company'. Pinnacle managing director Valerie Tan said yesterday that Ng and Chua will keep their jobs, but that the company would not pay for their fines 'because they acted in their personal capacity'. She could not say why they tried to retrieve the file, which she claimed had 'nothing to do with new car imports'. The tax evasion probe is still under way http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Story/STIStory_213355.html

  12. Sunday Times COMMUNICATIONS manager K.M. Ho was looking for a parking lot at an open-air carpark next to Wheelock Place on Friday night when someone suddenly banged on the back of his car. Puzzled, the 36-year-old got out, only to be punched in the face and slammed twice onto two cars by an American sailor reeking of alcohol. The assault left Mr Ho with a facial wound which needed four stitches, internal bleeding in his left eye and cuts on his nose. His brand-new $500 spectacles were shattered and his sports utility vehicle had a 10cm dent on the left from the impact of his being flung onto it. The sailor fled when some passers-by shouted at him. A few gave chase but did not catch him. One of them, undergraduate Lim Jiaqi, 21, said the sailor had disturbed others in the carpark minutes before attacking Mr Ho. Said Mr Lim: 'The same man had rushed into a woman's car while she was loading groceries into her car boot. He locked himself in and refused to get out. Some people at a nearby pub had to drag him out of the car.' The sailor was described as big-size and at least 1.8m tall. From the description provided, police officers tracked down the suspect, who was still in the vicinity, and took him to the police station. Mr Ho was taken to the Singapore General Hospital in an ambulance. But what happened later made him fuming mad. 'I was asked to go to Tanglin police station to identify my assailant. As soon as I identified the sailor, he was taken away by the American navy police. He left earlier than me!' he said. The suspect was taken away by officers from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), a group of law enforcement officers who 'protect' members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The NCIS has a field office in Singapore but it declined to reveal details about the suspect or what action it would take. Mr Ho, on the other hand, reached home at only 5.30am, after a two-hour-long interview by a police officer to record his statement. The police said they questioned the suspect but did not arrest him because the alleged offence - voluntarily causing hurt - is not a seizable one. A police spokesman said: 'The complainant was advised to lodge a magistrate's complaint should he wish to pursue the case against the defendant.' Singapore plays host to several US logistic facilities. US Navy personnel by the shipload often throng Orchard Road and major tourist spots whenever American warships make port visits here. Mr Ho said NCIS officer Ayren M. Jacobs told him that he would meet him today to follow up on investigations into the alleged assault. Mr Ho said: 'I just want justice.'

  15. veri rare govt body lose... Judge rules in favour of Komoco Motors in case against LTA By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 18 May 2007 2017 hrs SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has come out on the losing side in a S$7 million court case. In a judicial review, Judge Judith Prakash has ruled in favour of Komoco Motors, which brings in Hyundai cars. Some 17,000 Hyundai cars were at the centre of the case which started some two and a half years ago. Importer Komoco Motors had been asked by the LTA to pay more ARF, amounting to some S$7 million. "There was a customs issue which required Komoco to pay additional duty on those cars and as a norm the Registrar of Vehicles - or LTA in this case - actually used the OMV figure from customs to determine how much ARF or additional registration fee to impose on those cars. "In this case, Komoco felt the OMV itself should not be extended based on certain extenuating circumstances," says Philip Fong, Partner, Harry Elias Partnership. So Komoco's lawyers say it was prepared to go to LTA, open its books, and give full disclosure as to why they should not have to pay in this particular case. A meeting took place in an attempt to settle the matter out of court. But to court, it went. "We actually complained that LTA should not piggy back on the decision of customs blindly and without exercising an independent mind," says Fong. The case went up for judicial review, which seldom happens in Singapore. This is when a court of law reviews the actions of an official or entity, that is usually part of the government. In making her judgement, which has just been released, Judge Judith Prakash said LTA's policy was not unreasonable or irrational. However, having instituted that policy, the Registrar should have heard the case with an open mind and considered whether an exception should have been made. She added that the Registrar had unlawfully delegated her authority to Customs, by refusing to consider whether or not exceptional circumstances applied. So the Judge ruled in favour of Komoco, with costs - Channel NewsAsia understands LTA may have to pay up to S$50,000. When approached by Channel NewsAsia, LTA said it is consulting its lawyers. - CNA/yy

  17. A simple case that erupts into a 'frolic by solicitors' School teacher Jonathan Lock, already saddled with legal bills of over $100,000, takes his case to the Appeals Court. By Selina Lum A SIMPLE traffic accident case landed in the highest court in Singapore - all because of a dispute over $60. The much-publicised case of primary school teacher Jonathan Lock, who was initially awarded $188 by the Primary Dispute Resolution Centre (PDRC) but ended up being saddled with legal bills of more than $100,000, was heard before a three-judge Court of Appeal on Tuesday. Mr Lock was unwittingly dragged into a long and costly court battle after his former lawyer issued a writ of seizure against NTUC Income. The insurance giant responded by appealing to the High Court. NTUC's lawyers argued that the PDRC was not a court of law, and, hence, had no authority to make enforcible orders. The PDRC was set up by the Subordinate Courts to deal with minor road accidents and mediation sessions are presided over by district judges wearing hats as mediators. During the hearing of Mr Lock's appeal case on Tuesday, one of the three judges, Judge of Appeal V. K. Rajah said that in appealing to the High Court on a point of law, NTUC's lawyers had 'used a sledgehammer to crack a peanut, when a nutcracker would do'. Without mincing his words, Justice Rajah added: 'This is a very simple case. Why has it conflagrated into a frolic by solicitors?' Mr Lock's new lawyer, Mr Joseph Chen, argued that the PDRC was indeed a court, but Mr Madan Asomull, lawyer for Ms Jessiline Goh, whose car collided with Mr Lock's motorcyle sparking off the long-drawn legal battle, supported the High Court decision. However, the judges lobbed many questions at Mr Asomull, pointing out that the PDRC was set up to save time and costs for insurers and the public. They pointed out that Mr Asomull was actually arguing to make the process more lengthy and costly. This is because following the High Court decision, all settlements reached through the PDRC had to be endorsed by another judge. The Court will give its decision on Wednesday. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_163359.html look like ms Jessiline Goh or her lawyer is gg to get it.
  18. Bros / Sis(s) Have anyone encounter this before? I was in the lane to go into AYE (Towards Keppel Direction) On my left,a mini commercial mini bus then suddenly cut into my lane and hit me on my left side. He signalled and just cut out so as to go into AYE. The moment, I saw his signal I braked and my vehicle come to a halt. But he was too close to me when he cut in my door and side mirror all kanna. The first thing he said was each pay for each damages. He said lots of things like, he "assumed" I was giving way, then mirrior was shone by the sunlight and cannot see me on the side and cannot hear me horn him, and argued that he was already half way in my lane. The actual thing from me is that once I saw his signal light I hit my brakes till my vehicle came to a halt and watched my side getting hit helplessly. We then moved to the side and he told me cannot claim one. Sure 50/50. Then he keep using words to make me go off from the sence. Had no choice he passed me his vehicle number and hp number. And left the sence as we have alredy caused quite a jam at the location. Now here although he passed me his number, he never agreed to let me claim against him. I have never met an accident before hence I was so blur and not sure what was the right procedure.. Now I only have photos of my ride after the whole accident.Nothing on his van. What can I do here to do my claim against him? Now feel cheated by his words and after explaining to my friends and I confirmed I was doing all the right things to avoid the accident. That is why the damages was minimal to my ride, but just feel unfair to get hit and have to pay for my repairs. What should I do?
  19. Damn, if proven guilty....Mclaren Merc team really sucks. Am always put off by cheating in sports ========================================================================= September 6, 2007 Will Lewis be thrown out? Are Lewis Hamilton's chances of a rookie world title on the line? The Ferrari-McLaren 'spy' row has reignited, with news that the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) will meet next week to look at 'new evidence' that Hamilton's team used confidential Ferrari documents to improve its cars. If the WMSC finds McLaren guilty, it could cost Hamilton the world championship - and more. At the hearing in late July - where McLaren was found guilty of fraudulent conduct but not penalised - the WMSC said: 'We reserve the right to invite Vodafone McLaren Mercedes back in front of the WMSC, where it will face the possibility of exclusion from not only the 2007 championship, but the 2008 championship.' McLaren has indeed been invited back on September 13 in front of the entire council - a reconvention which indicates the new evidence could be serious. The hearing replaces Ferrari's Court of Appeal date, where the Italian team was due to contest the WMSC's July ruling. The spying row initially blew up when an 800-page Ferrari document was found in the house of McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, who has since been suspended. With Hamilton leading the world championship by five points from team-mate Fernando Alonso with five races to go, it'd be a cruel blow if he was to miss out becoming the first driver to take the title in his debut season. We'll find out more next week. But you can bet that there won't be too many smiles between Ferrari and McLaren at this weekend's Italian GP.

  22. Dear MCForumers I was involved in an accident earlier yesterday, at 6.35pm along Simei Avenue. I am posting this thread so that other forumers, as well as I, could gain some learning points from the abovementioned incident. I hope the kind members here would share their knowledge and pointers on how I could have handled the incident better. I was driving along Simei Avenue, after just exiting PIE, and I stopped at a junction. I looked at my rear view mirror and saw a white Toyota Corolla behind me. There were two youngsters in the car, both wearing T-shirts of the same design. The driver of the Toyoya then put his head out of the window, looking at another car...perhaps he knew the driver of the other car and was communicating something. When the lights turned green, I moved off and the white Toyota sped off and overtook me. It seems he was racing with another car. I just made a remark to my wife who was beside me that these guys were really reckless to do so at a busy stretch of road. As I wanted to go to The Singapore Expo, I kept to the 3rd lane and before I turned into the filter lane, I saw at the corner of my eye that the Toyota was reversing from the junction in front of me. It was in the second lane and obviously the driver had realised he had bypassed his route and decided to move to the filter lane as I was. I could see the body of the Toyota is moving perpendicular to my direction. I was by that time at the filter lane and I sounded my horn. As I stopped at the filter lane in order to check and give way to traffic, I got a bang from behind. The Toyota had banged into me. I stepped out of the car, assessed that the damage to the bumper was minor..only scratches. With further inspection, the bumper had been slightly 'dislocated' at the joints. The driver of the Toyota and his friend told me to settle and said it was just scratches and could be waxed off. I told him that I need to bring to a workshop to assess the damage and as I pointed out to the guy that he could see the bumper was not properly positioned already. By that time, a TP came over and asked if anybody was injured. The driver was shaken by the presence of the TP. I said nobody was injured and he said to settle among ourselves. The TP then rode off. As I checked the Toyota's driver driving licence, I realised he had just passed his licence in Nov 2006. I also realised that he didn't display his P Plate. As I didnt want to make a big deal out of the matter, we excahnged details and I said I will be willing to go to his workshop. I realised that we were both going to Singapore Expo and they were working for a PI which was having a booth there. What happened next made me really think whether I had been a fool... While I was at the Expo, I received a call from the Toyota driver and it was his boss. He was very friendly and asked if I was still at the Expo. I said I was and he asked if he could look at the damage. We went to look at my car and he said it's very minor and he offered to send a mechanic to rectify it for me the next day. My car could be left at any location and they would come over and repair it for me. I agreed to it and the guy's boss told him to write a letter stating he would pay for the full damage to the car. I was impressed with the boss, really helping his employee. About 3 hrs later, I realised that I have to use the car the next day. Since my car is an OPC, I smsed the driver and requested $60 from him. The reason why I asked for $60 was because I planned to drive my car to Sin Ming, a sticker workshop, so that my friend would be able to see what the mechanic from the other party would do to the car. In order to do that, I need to pay for the OPC licence, which is $20. By leaving the car at Sin Ming, I need to travel to my workplace at Bukit Merah during peak period. That would be about $20 per trip. I called the driver to explain the breakdown and he agreed, but he stated that if I could present the taxi fare receipt and claim that amount. I said that would not be a problem. What happened next was really unexpected. A few minutes after talking to him, I received a phonecall from his boss. His boss was angry and raised his voice at me. He said that I shouldn't claim a single cent from his boy and since I am being so fussy, I might as well claim the insurance. He 'reminded' me that the damage is very minor and also stated that I should remember that my excess is $500 (though it isnt). He stated that they are in the car business and they would know how to write the insurance report. I was taken aback by all this. It was a total change of attitude. I asked him what did I do to offend him and I have been cooperating. All I asked was for a courtesy sum($60) for my inconvenience. He kept on talking about not doing the car. After awhile, I explained to him the situation and said that if it is his car that got banged, would he just leave the car to a stranger to fix it without knowing what is being done. After getting his word, I agreed not to ask for the compensation. I hope the brothers here would advise me on the proper procedure and also what I could have done better. Perhaps asking for the compensation (OPC coupon and two way taxi fare) was out of line? Perhaps I should have reported to the TP who was there to take down the guys particulars. All this has left a sour taste and really made me ponder whether I should have been nice at all. I believe that the boss was agitated because his boy kept calling him in the middle of the night and thus responded in such a way. This thread is not meant to attack the PI but I hope the brothers here can shed some input on the best way to handle the matter. Your input would be truly appreciated. Thanks.
