  1. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1236077/1/.html More motorists caught with illegal, fanciful car number plates By Hu Jielan | Posted: 08 November 2012 2058 hrs SINGAPORE: The number of drivers caught for having illegal and fanciful car licence plates has gone up. Snazzy and stylish, but many motorists who display them on their vehicles do not even know that they are illegal. Some plates have wrong fonts or improper font sizes, while others come with blue LED lights. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the monthly figures for drivers found flouting the rules have doubled in nearly two years. There were 242 cases per month in 2010 and 542 cases per month for the first eight months of this year. In 2011, the number of drivers caught for illegal licence plates was 335 per month. The LTA guidelines stipulate that approved licence plates should have letters and figures that are 70mm high, 50mm wide and 10mm broad. The penalty is a fine of up to $1,000 or a jail term of up to three months. Workshop owners told Channel NewsAsia most drivers do not know that their licence plates were not approved. Iris Seah, owner of Chuan Heng Signcrafts, said: "The most common for improper car plates are either that they are too reflective or the fonts are not approved by LTA, and the reason that they are doing this is they just want to make their car more beautiful." Francis Lim, Secretary of Singapore Motor Workshop Association, said: "I think the most common reason is everyone wants their car to look good, more on cosmetic and also it is easy to install." - CNA/de
  2. A Ah-Long-Clown caught in action : From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._wrong_car.html Posted on 12 Nov 2012 Bungling 'Ah Long' caught vandalising wrong car A STOMPer's car was wrongly vandalised by a loanshark, and unfortunately for the loanshark, his actions were caught on the car's camera. The STOMPer wrote: "On November 11 2012 at around 6.30pm, my family and I were heading out to a family dinner. As we approached our car, we noticed there were scribbles on it. "We immediately knew it was done by an Ah Long or his ka kia. The problem is, we do not owe them any money. "Where we live is a good few kilometres from his stated target. In the picture, the person mentioned lives at Clementi West Avenue Street 2, but my family and I live at Clementi Avenue 4. "He obviously got the wrong family. After figuring out what happened, we lodged a police report and went home to look at our car camera. "Take note that the footage is not in real time as I have fast-forwarded through some parts. "The timing is also not accurate as the car camera was imported from Korea, hence the wrong timing. "All in all, this man did not only pick the wrong car, he also picked a car with a camera installed." Check out the beedeos...

  9. Or MRT in denial? Passenger was not at Lakeside MRT station: SMRT Train operator SMRT has refuted the presence of a passenger who had taken a picture of one of its train's carriage doors left open while it was travelling, saying that she was never there in the first place. Ms Samantha Francis, 23, a content producer with citizen journalism website Stomp, had uploaded a photo on Wednesday morning showing one of the train doors wide open. She claimed that the train was travelling despite the open door and only closed when it reached the next stop at Chinese Garden. Ms Francis had boarded the train at 10.15pm on Tuesday night. She told The Straits Times that after the train stopped at the station, the doors on the opposite side to the platform opened first. She then took a picture through the closed doors in front of her. When the doors in front of her opened, she entered the train and took another picture of the opposite doors, one of which remained open until the train stopped at the next stop at Chinese Garden. Ms Francis said a Chinese man in T-shirt and bermudas and an Indian man were in the same carriage as her. Yesterday, she met with SMRT staff at Lakeside MRT to assist in their investigations. She showed them where she was standing when she took the photo and described what she was wearing that night to help SMRT identify her in CCTV footage. When asked by SMRT staff if her current ez-link card was the one used that night, Ms Francis answered yes. However, SMRT told The Straits Times in a statement on Thursday that Ms Francis was not present at Lakeside MRT. "We thank (Ms Francis) for coming forward today to assist us with our investigations. We are checking a few more things, as from our records (CCTV footage and ez-link card trip details), she was not at Lakeside MRT station on 19 June," said the statement. It added that its trains will not be able to move if the doors are not closed properly and that the railings in her picture do not match those at Lakeside MRT. "We wish to reassure commuters that the MRT system is built with many fail-safe features to ensure passenger safety", said the company. Stomp editor Azhar Kasman confirmed yesterday that the photos of the incident were submitted by a Stomp content producer. "We have verified the details with her and she stands by her account of the incident," said Mr Kasman, in response to claims that Ms Francis was never at the station. [email protected]
  10. Growing numbers of motorists have been caught running red lights, Traffic Police figures revealed on Thursday. There were 5,400 such violations between January and March this year, 800 more than in the same period last year. The issue was thrust into the spotlight last month following two serious accidents at the Victoria Street-Rochor Road junction in Bugis. Both allegedly involved cars running the red light. The number of such cases has been on the rise in recent years. There were 17,490 in the whole of last year, up from 17,180 in 2010. 11. Don't think STOMPer's ride will suffer any physical damage but still... Maybe the STOMPer has parked in theis fella's fav lot? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...oat_hanger.html Posted on 24 May 2012 Caught on camera: Man tosses twisted coat hanger onto parked car This man was caught on video throwing an old twisted-up coat hanger onto the bonnet of STOMPer Taufik's car The STOMPer wrote: "This fat guy was caught red-handed on my blackvue camera. "He flung a used and disfigured metal hanger onto my car windscreen. "Anyone know who this man is? "I have never offended him and yet he did this to me? "Such an ugly Singaporean! "What do you guys think? "Why would he do this, I don't even know this guy, let alone offend him!"
  12. HOW DO YOU SUGGEST GOING ABOUT SOLVING THIS COMPLICATE PROBLEM? ANYONE WITH PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO SHARE? Stuck in a sticky situation. Im from HK and moved over here with my partner of 9 years from Aus. We moved so I could be closer to my family. Early last year we got married in Aus, of which majority of our friends from HK flew over to witness. During Oct, I got suspicious of my husband as I could tell things weren't right and he admitted he was texting/seeing someone on the side as I was too busy for him and he felt 'neglected'. Drama queen. Anyway, I have quite a successful job, and he is often left on own during some evenings, while I am out working. I said I was going to leave him and he threatened to take his own life, as I was the only one who really cares for him (he doesn't have any close friends in HK and is not so close with his family in Aus). So I forgave him and promised him that I wouldn't spend so much time on my work. A patchy xmas went by, and we went away during CNY on a sort of 'patch things out' holiday. It went really well, we spoke about how we felt and that we were newly married and having children. He really wants children at the moment and has booked in with the Family Association for us to visit next week. Then last night, I just so happen to go on his email, and BAM - there it is - email messages to and from this girl he was seeing in Oct. Things such as, i love you, i may be with my wife but my heart is with you, and this girl emailing him back asking him to spend more time with her and telling him she wants to be his 'Mrs'. Emails and pictures galore. The whole thing. Even emails from when we were on our patch-up holiday "had to quickly sneak away to tel you I miss and love you!!" What the hell right? Just the other day he was saying he really wants kids now and wants me to stop contraception and blah blah blah.. and then this? Why would he still want kids? So husband comes home, after I discovred all this when he was at the gym. I calm my nerves and act out all normal as if i didn't know anything. Now the question is - how the hell do I tell him? I want to leave him. I want separation/divorce. This is not the first time he has 'wandered' off in our relationship, as it happened many years ago and he promised he changed. We share a house together, he has no friends and no family here. I am scared if I leave him, he will do something silly to himself, like he always said he will. Emotional blackmail i know, but it is working. Also, how do I break the news to my family and friends, who all flew over to our wedding? They all love him and think he is great. Together we meet up with my family at least twice a week without fail. If I start showing up on my own, they will get suspicious. sorry for the long message....... i don't even know where to start. haven't even told my closest friends as I am greatly embarrassed this has happened. I have a lot of pride which has now been shattered. he kissed me goodbye before he left for work and he has booked dinner and movies tonight.... how and when shall i break the news?!?!
  13. Tue, Mar 13, 2012 The New Paper When her employers leave their condominium for work in the morning, Tara's heart beats faster. Because it is time to meet her boyfriend. Despite her employers not giving her a day off for fear that she will mix with bad company or find a boyfriend, the maid has found an admirer. The 23-year-old Filipina, who declines to give her full name, says she is dating one of the condominium's security guards. "He works the night shift and we meet in the morning after my employers go to work," reveals Tara, who came to Singapore two years ago. Every morning, her employers send their two children to pre-school before going to work. She is then left alone at home with the kids' elderly grandmother. Tara, who has to walk the dog and go to the market in the mornings, takes the opportunity to meet her boyfriend during that time. She believes her employers do not know about her boyfriend. On two occasions when the grandmother was not home, Tara even invited her boyfriend to her employers' three-bedroom condominium unit. "I was very scared that someone would come home suddenly. So I stopped inviting him. We just meet outside now. We go to the park nearby. Few people go there because it's very hot," says Tara. "I cannot let my employers know I have a boyfriend or they will send me back to the Philippines, and I need my job here." Tara says her employers have read about the recent news of a Bangladeshi man and a Filipino maid found dead in a Geylang hotel. They warned her about having a boyfriend here. "They said that things often go bad for people like us who fall in love here," says Tara, who started dating only six months ago. "I don't think this will happen to me. My boyfriend is very nice to me." Tara does not see the need to tell her employers about her boyfriend, and feels that even though she works here as a maid, she deserves to have some degree of privacy. "Maids are human beings and we have feelings too. It is natural to fall in love," says Tara, who is married in the Philippines and has a four-year-old son with her Filipino husband. "I still love my husband and my son. But I am all alone in Singapore and I need someone here too, because I need to stay and work here for many years to support my family back home." Tara smiles shyly when she tells this reporter how caring her boyfriend has been. "He takes me to the supermarket on his motorbike. Before, I had to walk under the hot sun and carry the heavy groceries home by myself. He also helps to top up my phone card and recently, he bought me an iPhone so that I can surf the Internet, watch videos and log on to Facebook," reveals Tara. She keeps her rendezvous with her boyfriend to two hours as she needs to get lunch ready before the kids come home at 12pm. Like most maids, Tara is hired to take care of the children and the elderly in the family. She does all the household chores and ensures that the home is spick-and-span when her employers return home from work at 7pm. On her employers' advice on staying in so she can avoid "bad company", she says: "I don't know what they mean by bad company. They don't realise that I need friends too. I like to go to the supermarket, where I meet other maids. We all understand each other," says Tara. "Many maids have boyfriends. We will introduce friends to each other and take care of each other, whether or not we have a day off. "New maids who come here will be given a day off. I am not so lucky. My employers will only give me $20 more for each Sunday I work." Tara says she used to think highly of Singaporean employers before she came here. But after working here for two years and hearing the stories of other maids, she does not think that Singaporeans make good employers. She explains: "My employers read all my letters I write to my family and those that they send to me. They don't give me any privacy at all. I feel that I have no rights working here. How can anyone be working without a rest day? "They scold me all the time and call me 'stupid' behind their children's back. But in front of their children and friends, they seem very nice to me." Tara recalls how she would often cry herself to sleep in her first year here. But she soon learnt how to handle her employers' complaints and scolding. Even though she does not have a rest day, she manages to take afternoon naps inside the bathroom. Occasionally, Tara amuses herself by trying on her female employer's dresses and taking photos of herself with her iPhone. "Sometimes I hide in the bathroom to watch videos on my iPhone. I love my iPhone so much and I cannot let my employers know I have one. They will take it away from me. I keep too many secrets inside my iPhone."
