  6. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...r_under_it.html suspect burning incense paper under the taxi caused the fire STOMPer Jason saw a parked taxi catch fire at Bedok. The cause of this was probably the burning offerings on the carpark kerb, said the STOMPer. Jason related over the phone (Aug 28): "This happened near the Bedok North 511 market today, around 6.15pm. "At first, the fire was small, then within three minutes, it became a big blaze. "Firemen on motorbikes arrived at the scene within three minutes, and managed to control the fire. "Shortly after, a Red Rhino and a fire engine arrived at the scene too. "The taxi driver was not present at the scene -- he must have parked there to go have dinner at the nearby market. "I believe the cause might have been the candles and other burning offerings on the kerb. "These were directly under the parked taxi -- and the taxi was parked properly. "They should not have burnt the offerings so near to the carpark. "Either this was the cause, or burning ash from nearby offerings could have blown over and also sparked the fire. "The taxi's two rear tyres were burnt, and the boot also had holes caused by the blaze. "The whole incident took about half an hour. "I also saw the firemen trying to find the taxi driver's particulars to contact him."

  8. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1134251/1/.html Nursing home mistreats patient Posted: 09 June 2011 2002 hrs SINGAPORE: The Nightingale Nursing Home along Braddell Road has been suspended with effect from April 12, from admitting new patients, after some of its staff members were found to have mistreated a resident there. The incident came to light after Channel NewsAsia alerted the Ministry of Health to a video, taken by a hidden camera on a patient's bedside. The video showed an elderly woman patient sitting next to a bed without any clothes, while the ceiling fans in the room were on. After a while, two staff members were shown lifting the patient and throwing her onto a bed. In one footage, a staff member was shown slapping the patient after she moaned in pain. The old lady has been a resident of the home for the past four years. The nursing home said it has disciplined the staff involved, and placed additional measures such as getting senior staff to visit the wards and checking the conduct of its staff. The measures also include holding regular meetings with patients and their family members. In its reply to Channel NewsAsia, the Ministry of Health said: "There were significant lapses in the care standards provided to the patient in question. "This should not have happened. There should have been tighter supervision of staff rendering care to vulnerable patients. Patients' dignity and respect must be upheld at all times". A family member of the patient said: "Of course we are unhappy with the incident. "We sent her there for the nurses to take care of her; we're disappointed with what happened. "There are other old folks at the home. We hope by bringing this matter up, it will help to improve things at the home. "We have since moved our mother to another nursing home". The Ministry of Health said it will closely monitor the nursing home to ensure all additional measures required of it are properly implemented and subsequently ascertain if the suspension imposed on the home should be reviewed or further sanctions imposed. It said: "Our inspectors regularly check that all nursing homes are properly maintained, keep their patient records in order and institute effective infection control measures. "Nursing home operators are also required to maintain care standards on medication administration, fall prevention, housekeeping, etc. "Nursing homes that do not meet the required standards or which require closer monitoring for any other reason will be subject to more regular audits. MOH will also guide them on how to improve their performance". -CNA/wk

  10. SINGAPORE: MORE off-peak car (OPC) owners are caught driving without an electronic licence during peak hours since the revised electronic licence scheme was introduced. About 150 offenders were caught in January, higher than last year's average of about 100 offenders a month. There were a total of 1199 offenders last year. A Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson said enforcement efforts have been intensified against errant OPC owners who use the OPC during restricted hours without a valid licence. This comes even though OPC owners can buy the e-licence after they use their OPC, up to 11.59pm the next day after the car was used. Action has also been taken against owners who do not enter the usage date for the OPC's prepaid undated licence. As of Jan 31, about 150 offenders were caught using their OPCs during peak hours without a valid licence. OPC owners need to buy a valid e-licence before 11.59pm the next day after their OPCs were used. The revised OPC scheme has seen a steady uptake since its launch on Jan 25. More than 21,000 motorists have converted to the new scheme. Out of this number, 473 were normal cars that converted to the off-peak scheme and 666 were new cars registered under the scheme. This figure accounts for about 45 per cent of OPC users based on the current total OPC population of 47,986. Source

  13. An SMRT bus caught fire along the BKE this morning (Apr 17). Two STOMPers managed to snap pictures of the incident. One of the STOMPers, concerned, said: "A bus had caught fire on the BKE after the Mandai exit. Only the shell remaining -- perhaps the petrol tank caught fire." STOMPer Sajjad, who also saw the fire, said: "I first saw the bus on fire at about 8am. Then, on my way home at 11.30am, I saw the remains of the bus. "I wonder what happened. Hopefully nobody was injured and passengers had been evacuated safely. "Maybe the hot weather overheated the engine? SCDF said it received a call at about 7.30am today informing them of the bus on fire along BKE. Upon their arrival at the scene, the fire was already raging. SCDF officers managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes. There were no casualties in the incident.

  18. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1102640/1/.html SINGAPORE: A 28-year-old property agent admitted on Tuesday that he had targeted the homes of some of his former clients and broke into them to steal. Besides housebreaking, Chen Guilin - who was known among netizens as Gary Ng - also pleaded guilty to forgery and possession of obscene films. Chen had gained notoriety by posting on the internet homemade videos of himself engaged in sex. He originally faced 21 charges but 13 were taken into consideration. The property agent was found to have 507 obscene films in his possession. Nearly all of them were homemade, showing Chen having sex with different women. The slim, bespectacled man had uploaded some of these clips onto the internet with the women's faces masked. Chen admitted that he had dishonestly made off with more than S$170,000 worth of cash and valuables. He had broken into the homes of some of his former clients by duplicating the keys to the units. In one such incident, Chen broke into an apartment at Water Place Condominium at Tanjong Rhu sometime between August 13 and 30, 2009. He made off with items including some RM2,000, two credit cards and a portable television worth around S$600. Chen also admitted to forging the signatures of two women to withdraw cash totalling more than S$90,000 from their bank accounts. One of his victims was a former client, while the other, a friend of an ex-girlfriend. Chen asked passersby to encash the forged cheques on his behalf between September 4 and December 4, 2008, in exchange for rewards of S$500 each. This is to avoid being caught should the bank officers realise that the signatures had been forged. He will be sentenced on January 19. For forgery, he could be jailed up to 10 years and fined for each charge. For housebreaking, he could be jailed a maximum of 10 years. And for possessing obscene films, Chen could be jailed up to six months. -CNA/wk

  21. About 2 hours ago a few cars were caught queue-jumping along a 4-lanes road in JB. One white Toyota Corolla Altis was waved and told by first TP to leave the queue after he squeezed from Lane 2 into Lane 3. After leaving the queue, he tried behind the back of the first TP to squeeze back into the same queue. This time another TP behind the first TP wavered him aside and booked him and did not allowed him to go into Lane 3. The two Casinoes are in Singapore, not JB. I believe it is not wise to gamble that manner there

  23. Dec 19, 2009 KPE tunnel: Over 60 a day caught speeding Motorists say 70kmh limit too slow; LTA says it is necessary for safety By Judith Tan SMOOTH AND SAFE 'Given the road design parameters of the KPE, a speed limit of 70kmh is necessary to ensure both smooth traffic and safety for motorists using it.' LTA spokesman WATCH YOUR SPEED MORE than 60 motorists a day have been caught speeding through the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel in the first nine months of this year - making up 12 per cent of those caught islandwide. The reason: the tunnel's 70kmh speed limit, which is much lower than the 90kmh limit along other expressways. But motorists who want the limit raised are not going to get their way. Said a Land Transport Authority spokesman: 'Given the road design parameters of the KPE, a speed limit of 70kmh is necessary to ensure both smooth traffic and safety for motorists using it.' Traffic Police said a total of 37,000 motorists were caught speeding through the 12km tunnel between October 2007, when the first stretch was opened, and September this year. In the first nine months of this year, 17,000 motorists were caught. The KPE was constructed to ease travel flow from north-eastern residential areas such as Hougang, Sengkang and Punggol to the city centre. The longest tunnel in Singapore, its 70kmh speed limit aims to ensure safety as accidents in tunnels are potentially disastrous, and can lead to explosions and fires. Speed limits in tunnels in Japan and Europe are set at between 70kmh and 80kmh. Yet, motorists continue to chafe - registering their grouses on several online forums about having to 'crawl' through the tunnel. Agreeing, Mr M. Raju, 37, a salesman, said: 'The speed limit at 70kmh is sleep-inducing, especially when I finish work at 8pm and am driving home in the KPE tunnel. The crawl and the lighting could lull me into nodding off.' While others like teacher S. Ong, 40, have received several warning letters for exceeding the speed limit by between 5kmh and 10kmh, despatch rider Ramli, 51, was not so 'lucky'. He was fined $150 and chalked up six demerit points for going at 90kmh on his motorbike. As low as the speed limit may seem for an expressway, a number of serious accidents have already occurred on the KPE, with the police confirming a total of 14 accidents since the expressway opened in 2007. The latest, involving two cars and a motorcycle, occurred at about 8am on Dec 9 near the entrance from the Tampines Expressway. The motorcyclist, 51, died, leaving behind a wife and six-year-old child. Several motoring forums are appealing for eye-witnesses to the accident. Yet, despite 10 speed cameras along the tunnel, some drivers continue to floor the accelerator - some to speeds of up to 140 kmh - twice that of the limit. One such driver even flaunted his 100kmh speed through the KPE tunnel by posting the footage online. The video, '100kmh in Singapore KPE, end to end in six minutes', was posted in May on the video-sharing website YouTube. The footage, about six minutes long, shows the speedometer hovering between 94kmh and 110kmh - hitting as high as 113kmh at one point. Several online discussion groups have speculated that the cameras might not be able to snap cars that whizz by at above 100kmh, but the Traffic Police maintained that this was not so. It declined, however, to provide a breakdown of the number of motorists caught at varying speeds or any photographs. Offenders found exceeding the speed limit will receive either warning letters or summonses from the Traffic Police. Going beyond 70kmh by up to 20 kmh will cost a motorist a fine of between $130 and $160, and four demerit points. Those who exceed 110kmh will be hauled to court. If convicted, they face fines of up to $1,000 or a jail term of three months. They will also be given between 12 and 24 demerit points. Since it opened, the KPE has become a popular route with motorists. The average daily two-way volume is about 63,500 vehicles - a 30 per cent increase over the 48,900 recorded last September, when it was fully opened to traffic. LTA trying to scare us? See the bolded text.
