  7. Hi, thinking of driving to Woodlands checkpoint and park at Woodlands centre instead as I do not want to drive into msia. Does anyone know if the open air carpark at Woodlands centre is still open?
  8. Last Friday morning, I realised that something was wrong with my 08 Passat 1.8TSI's gearbox (only had 3rd Gear when driving forwards - No problem with Park, Neutral and Reverse). Even when I tried to change gear manually, or use a different mode, it still stayed in 3rd gear when driving (indicator is always 3). Hence it was pretty sluggish off the line, and to maintain highway speeds, the engine was rather strained. So, I drove straight to VW Service Centre. At first, the receptionist said that a Master Technician needed to take a look at my car, and asked me to have a seat at the lounge. And around 9am, she came by and told me that the Master Technician was still with another car, and that I should leave my key with them, and that they would call me back when they found out what was wrong with my car. I waited until 2pm Friday afternoon to call them, and that was when I realised that they had passed my "case" onto a Service Advisor. When I finally spoke to the Service Advisor, he informed me that there was a queue of cars waiting for a Master Technician to take a look. He then advised me that my car could only be seen on Saturday at the earliest. I then requested that he call me once my car was seen and to update me on the situation. Saturday morning came and went and after several missed calls, I finally managed to speak to my Service Advisor who apologetically informed me that my car had not been seen. He could not even indicate when my car could be seen, and that it is likelt to be Monday. I called again this morning (monday) and he said he would call me back... I called again in the afternoon... and he still hadn't stopped seeing his case load of incoming cars.... 72+ hours (3 days) of cars and no one can tell me if anything is wrong with my car (or if it was just a temporary issue). Are there so many VW cars at the workshop, or just so few technicians and mechanics?
  9. http://eatbook.sg/pasir-ris-central-hawker/ Things to eat at Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre New food place to explore. It is advertised as an instagram worthy hawker center served by young entrepreneurs. I would very much prefer simple hawker fares at less exorbitant prices compared to 'hipster' food but if the food is good, it's still worth a try. Anyone been here?

  11. Has anyone serviced their car here before? It's located just behind Shell Station along Ganges Ave beside a Chinese temple (opposite the famous Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh) How's the workmanship/price etc.? Realised it's quite near to me ... thought of sending my car there for servicing
  12. This afternoon I was at Redhill market and saw some pigeons (4 of them specifically) actually flew right into the hawker centre, feeding on crumbs on the floor (see picture). WTF! What goes in, must come out, right? I shudder to think of the food I had just consume might have been contaminated! Not that I am a hygiene freak, or having too high expectations of a hawker centre, but still...
  13. I've not been shopping in local shopping centre for a long time. But I visited the central mall recently and realized that it probably has the most number of restaurants and makan places than any shopping centres. I think a good shopping centre must have varities, family friendly, a big size supermarket and most importantly, ample resting areas! Regards,

Passengers at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore have complained about long waits at the immigration checkpoints, and for taxis. -- ST PHOTO: KEVIN LIM By Melissa Lin Traffic on the roads around the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) came to a standstill last Thursday when two large cruise ships docked at the passenger seaport on the same morning. Between them, the luxury liner Queen Mary II of the Cunard Cruise Line and Voyager of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, can take more than 5,000 passengers. It created a bottleneck of vehicles arriving and going. Though Thursday's incident was especially protracted, traffic congestion is one of a string of problems to plague MBCCS since it began operations in May 2012. Passengers have complained about long waits at the immigration checkpoints, and for taxis. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/transport/story/marina-bay-cruise-centre-plagued-gridlock-due-swell-passengers-when-s#sthash.InNtQPKs.dpuf -Source: Straits Times. 18. Yale law professor and author Amy Chua, better known as the iron-fisted Asian-American Tiger Mom, is exporting her parenting style to Singapore, with the launch of an after-school enrichment center in the tuition-crazy city-state. The Keys Academy, which focuses both academics as well as soft skills such as creativity and leadership, aims to groom secondary-school students for university and "jobs of the future," with classes in robot-building and computer-coding as well as externships with global corporations and college admissions programs. "It's the best of both worlds," 52-year old Chua, who is one of four advisers to the center, told CNBC on Thursday. "I like that Keys Academy preserves the hard core 'you need to know the basics, and there's no way around that hard work.' But, [it equally focuses on] personal communication skills, how can you be interesting and dynamic, because that's really what it takes now." 20. Over the weekend, Asiaone ran this article VW to open new service centre in MacPherson, where it also stated the following tidbits:"A Volkswagen Centre Singapore spokesman said that currently 90 cars are serviced a day. 'This will rise to 120 and later 180 with the new facility,' he said, adding that for standard service bookings, customers now wait for up to seven days but VW will bring this down to three days.... ...But according to some VW owners, the waiting time now is between one and two months... ...The VW spokesman said that the waiting period could be even longer if there were other issues that the customer wanted VW to look into. 'For standard servicing, it is within seven days,' he said." And that is bullcrap! I don't think I had a 7 day service wait in the past 2 years. I've driven my car to 95,000km, and with a 15K service interval, that's 6 servicing in the past 4 years, which is fortunately not too often (compared with my previous Japanese cars' 10k service intervals). Go ask any friend who owns a VW and I'm sure they'll tell the same story... 1 month is already lucky. Call today (+65 6305 7299) and the service assistant will politely inform you that the earliest she can slot you in is in April! And a standard servicing for 60k might take 2 days! And the numbers are telling. 13,000 VWs need at least 1.5 service appointments a year each = 20,000 appointments a year. Add the expected 3000 cars they will probably sell this year (16,000 cars, 24,000 appointments) and you know that they do not have the capacity to handle servicing, much less repairs and other car-related work. (In the article, they stated that they can only do about 90 cars a day, and that I presume is including repairs...) As a previously satisfied VW owner, I can only give a word of advice to prospective VW buyers... DON'T BUY VW!

  23. http://forum.channelnewsasia.com/viewtopic...e3c7b13f18262ac Jurong area to offer more retail options By Stella Lee | Posted: 27 July 2011 2247 hrs SINGAPORE : The retail scene in the Jurong Gateway area is set to become more vibrant with the addition of Jem, developed by Lend Lease. Many expect its retail traffic to be supported by the heavy concentration of people living and working in the west. Suburban malls have always been a bit dowdy compared to the fancier malls in the city. But with Singapore growing rapidly, the retail landscape is also changing. The Jurong Gateway area will soon be transformed, as it rides on the development of the surrounding Jurong Lake District. Paul Walker, project development director of the Jurong Gateway Project at Lend Lease, said: "With new shopping centres, the amount of new retail space means more competition for retail, and that means suburban malls are the next wave of growth in Singapore." While analysts do not expect rents in suburban malls to grow at rates above city malls, competition for space has seen tenants in city malls venture into the suburban fringes. And Singapore's third largest suburban shopping mall will be in Jurong Gateway. Called Jem, the new mall will open in the second quarter of 2013, with 818,000 square feet of gross floor area, half of which is already leased out to anchor tenants including Cathay Cineplex, Robinsons and NTUC FairPrice. The development will also have an office space tower with 345,000 square feet of gross floor area. The office space has been fully leased by three tenants - the Ministry of National Development, Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority and the Building and Construction Authority. Jem's developer Lend Lease is targeting 20 million visits per year when it opens, tapping on the 20 per cent of Singapore's population residing in that area. Ku Swee Yong, CEO of International Property Advisor, said: "Jurong Gateway is part of the overall redevelopment of the Jurong Lake District and the potential there is pretty good because it is a very comprehensively thought out plan to bring business and finance into Jurong district. Jem itself would have enough components within it; on its own, it can be a destination." Also in the pipeline for Jurong Gateway is another mall jointly developed by CapitaLand and two of its subsidiaries, CapitaMalls Asia and CapitaMall Trust Management. Other malls in the Jurong area include the upcoming Jcube, IMM and Jurong Point. - CNA/ms Great News!!!! A further move to decentralise from the City Centre!!! A huge group of people (MND, BCA, AVA) is going to shift out from CBD to Jurong East! Drivers from this group of people will benefit from no erp and lower parking fees! I do not know the % of cars from MND, BCA & AVA as compared to the total number of cars going into city centre but it will defintely lead to a decrease no matter how small Also number of people taking public transport to city centre will be reduced! Those MND, BCA, AVA living in Jurong will rejoice!
  24. Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC has sold its entire stake in the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Financial Centre in London for £582.5 million (S$1.2 billion). Norges Bank Investment Management, Norway's sovereign wealth fund, is the buyer of the prime freehold property in London's financial district, said GIC in a statement yesterday. The move follows GIC's full acquisition of the RomaEst Shopping Centre - in which it already had a 50 per cent interest - in Italy on Monday. GIC bought the 585,000 sq ft London office property from Merrill Lynch in 2007 for £480 million, beating investors such as Syrian-born tycoon Simon Halabi and Irish investor Derek Quinlan. Norges Bank said in a statement that the acquisition was not financed by debt. Bank of America Merrill Lynch will continue to manage the property, under the lease agreement. The financial centre has a net lettable area of about 550,000 sq ft. It comprises four buildings on a 1.3ha site, and was first purpose-built by the American bank as its flagship headquarters in London. The complex is also near the historic St Paul's Cathedral. GIC has been on a shopping spree in Europe of late. It bought a stake in RAC, Britain's second-largest roadside assistance firm, from Washington-based private equity firm Carlyle Group two weeks ago. GIC also agreed to buy 30 per cent of Spanish real estate firm Gmp for more than €200 million (S$323 million) last week. Earlier reports had noted that GIC may be part of a group of investors in talks to buy airports in Aberdeen and Glasgow in Scotland as well as in Southampton in southern England for £1 billion. Quick calculation on the returns from purchasing Bank of America Financial Centre: Purchase $480 million (sterlings) in 2007 = SGD $1,440 million (07 sterling to SGD is 3 ish to 1 give and take lah) Sold $582.5million (sterlings) in 2014 = SGD $1,194 million (current rate is 2.05 ish give and that lah) Lost = SGD$246 million just in foreign exchange fluctuation Assumption: No debt financing, related fees not taken into account, rental not taken into account Somebody please tell me I'm wrong but the numbers are what it is right?
