  3. Changing alimony laws will get women back to work: Source Straits Times Date 14 Dec 2012 IT IS perhaps timely to relook the long-standing alimony laws to encourage more women to return to work ("Keep kids in school till 7pm so mums can go to work?"; last Friday). In Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, alimony laws, along with other measures like extensive childcare facilities, serve to keep women in the workforce. Alimony is seldom granted except in certain circumstances where a spouse becomes financially needy upon a divorce. This sends a strong signal to women that they are responsible for their own finances after divorce. As such, most women continue working while having a family. In Singapore, however, the option of alimony is open to every married woman no matter how well off or highly educated she is. This safety net makes it less risky for her to quit her job to meet the needs of her family. Should her marriage fail, she can depend on alimony payment from her former husband to tide her over. Laws enacted to enforce alimony payment further strengthens the idea that staying home poses little financial risk. Alimony laws in Singapore were forged in the 60s when most women were homemakers. The economic situation of women has improved tremendously over the years. Many are now highly educated and pursuing successful careers. The laws need to move with the times. Access to alimony should be restricted to women from the low educational and income levels and when they could be in a dire financial situation upon divorce. This will send a strong message, especially to highly-educated women, that staying home would no longer be a viable option for them. Sulthan Niaz Source: Straits Times
  4. Anyone changing job next yr? I am now in ORD mood...hope to tender after CNY.
  5. my tires are wearing thin already, the michellin man's hands are now gone and the tires are starting to skid during wet weather my friend says that a 5m skidding during dry weather is still safe because we usually keep a 10m distance between us and the car in front just wondering, what is the norm that people will usually use to judge when to change tires? how many meters skid is allowable for wet and dry conditions?
  6. Hello. Realized that one of my tyres is leaking air. Check around and found out the the area around the valve is source. First time kena valve leak but not sure if i can change the valve only. I supposed the valve is not connected to the tyre itself right? If can change, how much will the cost be? Any shops in the north i can go to? If cannot, then i have to bring forward my rubber changing schedule earlier.

I tot the only way to change is> get a new steering wheel (e.g. Sparco) + usage of Quick release Then i saw some forum/mass order merchant saying that changing of steering wheel is legal but usage of Quick release is illegal... 1) so is changing steering wheel illegal? 2) if dont use quick release, still can change steering wheel?? :crycry:
  9. Went to RV to change my battery. Not a regular there (because don't like the oil they offer). Inspite being end of business day, they gave me good customer service, to the extent that when the new battery do not fit due to my car's quirky height restrictions, they brought me to another shop. The technician assigned follow through until the battery was replaced. RV was also professional when swapping batteries. Not just clip a spare battery to the terminals and change (which can accidentally dislodge while removing the terminals) On a side note, before I went RV, I was at another tyre shop and to my horrors, they just start my engine and remove my terminals. For old cars this is fine but I have not seen this method for donkey years. That shop also did not have the right battery size and wanted to cut away my terminal cover so that a recessed type battery can be used. I have to insist NO before they put back my old battery. Just to be clear, I am not in anyway affiliated with RV. Posting this because I thought helping me to find another shop and following through is something worth encouraging.
  10. http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_818161.html MONDAY'S article ('Sung with national pride') about the significance of national anthems - or their irrelevance - spurred my thoughts about our National Anthem. In all honesty, I almost forgot its title when I tried to recall it; assuming it was Mari Kita (Let Us) because these are the first words, before I remembered that it is Majulah Singapura (Onward Singapore). Sadly, beyond the title, I have no clue what the rest of the anthem means, despite having sung it every single day from primary school to junior college. My second problem is that the anthem is in Malay. If the purpose of a national anthem is to forge national identity and rally citizens towards a common vision or goal, why choose a language that four-fifths of Singaporeans today neither speak nor understand? Should our National Anthem be updated? The view that doing so would open a Pandora's box of unwelcome controversy framed along sensitive racial lines misses the point. The problem is not that most Singaporeans do not understand Malay, but that we do not understand what our National Anthem means. More effort must be made in schools to teach the anthem to students. I remember being cursorily taught its meaning in primary school, with its translation tucked away in an obscure page of a social studies text. If efforts are not made to impress the meaning and significance of the National Anthem, then generations of students will continue to sing Majulah Singapura every morning without understanding its importance or worth. 11. The main reason being we've got a baby coming. I was thinking of S3 initially but the maintanance would be horendous if the DSG fail. So should I change to a Caldina??? Its got all the ticks for the 2nd car criteria. 1) 4 cyclinder = cheaper registration and should have better fuel consumption 2) 2L = same as above 3) AWD 4) Cheap to maintain 5) 5 Door + wagon 6) Looks ok at least not like Stagea so boxy 7) Turbo. At least still got a bit of go to it. Caldina 2003 Opinion people?
  12. According to this POST, someone got charged for changing his shirt in the carpark after RT. I suppose if we go strictly by law, the MAJ is right. Having said that, petty people abuse petty powers. Comments / opinions?
  13. Hi Bros, Couldn't find any opinions on the above. Since such mats are quite ex, (at least $60), why reason for replacing the original car mats to these aftermarket mats?
  14. Read from many ang moh forum where the flywheel should be resurface (aka skim the flywheel) before installing new clutch. but I dont see this as a common practice in SG. Is it a must to do so??

  16. hi guys, a friend i know told me whenever he change tyres there will always be some scratches. He has been to many different tyres shops. Even some widely recommended shops such as Soh Brothers, p-- ---g, etc, all have scratched his rims to some extend. Any idea if any tyre shop gives guarantee for no scratch of rims or workmanship is superb?
  17. I am dying to get my hands on a new set of Volks rims for my car but can practically only do so when my wheels are due for a change (thats where I sneak in the extra upgrade). Unfortunately based on what I have been seeing, it does not seem that tires wear out fast enough for me to get my wheels changed any time soon (my relatives can drive their car for 10 years without changing tires!). I am therefore not sure when is it an appropriate time to change wheels. Also, how does upgrading my rims affect my drive. Assuming I upgrade from stock alloy 17in rims to a VOLKs 18in aluminium rims, will it result in obvious savings in fuel consumption? will the increase in size give me problems such as requiring to make many adjustments to my suspension etc? Finally, where is a good place I can buy original VOLKs rims?
  18. Always happen when merging into high way express way or some main road, there are other cars behind you waiting because of your stupidity. The 3rd lane is long and straight without vehicles, why is there such a need to jump to another lane with so many vehicles at crawling speed?
  19. Hi all, Would by changing the default wheel from 4 lugs to 5 lugs using spacer, affect the way the car is being driven (eg, alignment, balancing an etc)? Please advise me and Thank you very much. Regards,
  20. Hi all. Like to hv some views from bro/sis here. Im driving a Mit grandis 2.4A(not sports model) Mar 2005, parf $14.8k. thinking of changing to an old Toyota Camry 2L of the same value. Trying to see if I can reduce ownership cost with lower rd tax and patrol cost. For me the MPV is too large and a sedan will be better. Is the saving really attractive not forgetting the Camry parf is lower? Let say i switch to a Camry 2L June 2005 w/o any costs, at the end of 10 years, do I actually make any gains? Rd tax saving is abt $1.2k for 3yr till coe exp. Not sure how much saving for insurance. My petrol cost abt $500/mth currently, not sure a 2L will save me $100 a month? if so will be $3.6k savings for 3yr. How abt maintenance costs? Currently Mit Grandis main. costs is quite ok and i presume the Camry is the same? How much savings do u think only will this exerciser be worthwhile? 5k? 10k? 15? 20k? Thanks you for ur opinions.

  23. STOMPer Marcus was disgusted to see this foreign couple changing their baby girl's diaper right at their table in Seoul Garden. They were also talking at the top of their lungs and showing no regard for other patrons, said the STOMPer. The STOMPer wrote: "These people, who appear to be from China, were talking at the top of their lungs and even changed their baby's diaper while others were eating! "How rude and unhygienic! "One old man was also scratching his leg while resting it on the sitting area. "The little girl of theirs was also making a lot of noise and seemed very demanding and rude towards her parents. "How unruly of them. "Are these China citizens coming here to make a fool of themselves and ruining their country's image? "They ought to learn some basic table manners and courtesy. "I am very enraged by this sight."
  24. Hello everyone, I'm planning to change my power steering fluid as it has turned black. Besides the turkey blaster method, has anyone tried removing the "return" hose and using the power steering pump to flush out old fluid while adding fresh fluid into the reservoir? Thanks.
  25. As above. New tyre size same as the old one. Any expert can explain?
