  1. You can almost tell whether a car is heavily TCed just by closing in, passing by it or when it is in stationery position at junction or traffic lights. Do you think the loud noise produced is annoying and a form of pollution to the roads? Some also commented that stock Japanese TCed cars produced the most noise compared with their Conti competitors. In the pursuit of power, do you also give in to loud noise and forget about comfort. I'm of the view that a fast street car need not be a noisy car. Regards,
  2. Anyone know how these people run foul of the law? Because the sentence said "they gave or agreed to give petrol vouchers in return for being picked in the Shell "free fuel for a year, one lucky winner a day" draw." I thought they call to win the Shell petrol voucher. And not offer petrol to win petrol leh. Is there a typo there? http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin.../389592/1/.html SINGAPORE: Twelve people who had either agreed or given bribes in exchange for having their names picked in a lucky draw ran foul of the law. In a statement, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said they gave or agreed to give petrol vouchers in return for being picked in the Shell "free fuel for a year, one lucky winner a day" draw. All 12 - 10 men and one woman - were charged in court on Thursday. They face a possible jail term of five years or a maximum fine of S$100,000 if convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The executive who took the bribes, Teh Gim Leng, has already been sentenced to three months' jail and fined S$5,900 in July. - CNA/vm

As reported in CNA : Man charged with stabbing spouse of seven years By Zul Othman SINGAPORE: As a former crime reporter with The Straits Times, Mr Russell Tan Rui Leen was no stranger to the courtroom. 6. SINGAPORE : An Australian journalist has been charged with drug trafficking and possession in Singapore. 41-year-old Australian Broadcasting Corporation correspondent Peter Lloyd was arrested on Wednesday. Investigators believe Lloyd may have supplied drugs to a Singaporean who was arrested separately. Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers seized from him a packet of designer drug 'ice' or methamphetamine weighing some 0.8 grammes, one improvised smoking pipe and six syringes. Reporters and photographers staked out the Subordinate Court for hours on Friday, expecting to see Lloyd turn up in court to be charged. But that did not happen. The CNB confirmed Lloyd was actually charged on Friday afternoon at Changi General Hospital. That is because he is being treated for a serious eye infection which he contracted while on leave in Singapore from his posting in New Delhi. Bail has also been offered to him, although CNB did not say how much the bail was. Lloyd is due to appear in court again next Friday. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane. - CNA/ms
  7. July 14, 2008 Man charged over fatal accident By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent A MAN was charged in court on Monday with negligently causing the deaths of his mother-in-law and son in a road traffic accident two years ago. Long Shi Pin, 37, was driving a car along Woodlands Road when it crashed into a tree, killing rear seat passengers, Madam Lee Tew Ngoh, 63, and six-year-old Matthew Long Chay En on May 28, 2006. He is also accused of causing grievous hurt to his wife, Madam Jennifer Tham Ai Ping, 37, who was seated in front, and his sister-in-law, Ms Joann Tham Gek Peng, 33, seated at the back of the car. He is said to have failed to keep a proper lookout while negotiating a slight left bend, causing the car to veer to the right, mount the centre road divider and hit the tree. His mother-in-law and son died on the spot while the others were taken to hospital. Bail of $10,000 was set. If convicted of causing death, he can be jailed for up to two years and/or fined. 8. I posted few days ago (6/12/07) on POSB who charges $4.50 for coins deposit by a child who was given a "Piggy Bank" in form of a 'can' by POSB in school so as to encourage him to save. His mother was fuming mad and wrote to the ST Forum page to complain. In today ST Forum (11/12/07) read: "POSB Staff Wrong to Levy Coin-deposit Fee" DBS reply : We are disappointed that we failed Mdm Tan's son when he went to our branch to deposit his saving into his personal POSB account. In conjunction with the Children's Day this year, we produce specially-designed POSBkids Savers coin banks tp encourage our young customers to start saving. When the coin banks are filled up, the children can bring their savings to their favourite POSB branch and deposit the money into their POSBkids saving accounts. No coin-deposit fee is levied for these children. We are sorry that our staff at the branch made a mistake and deducted the amount from his account. We have spoken to Mdm Tan and apologised to her and her son, and have since refunded the fee to his account. At least DSB had clear the air in regards to saving by child. My only hope is that it could be extended to all form of coins saving by the child in regardless of whether the "Piggy Bank" is issued by POSB or not. As well the coins is creditted into the POSBkids account, the coin-deposit levy should be waived.
  9. MAN was charged in a district court on Friday with causing the death of his front seat passenger and a woman pedestrian in a three-vehicle collision. Owen Calvin Tan Cheng Lock, 44, is said to have caused the death of Madam Lai Foong Mei, 41, through his negligence along Buangkok Drive last Oct 14. He was driving a van when he allegedly failed to give way to traffic when making a right turn from Buangkok Drive into Punggol Road, resulting in a collision with another van coming from the opposite direction with the right of way. On impact, his vehicle allegedly veered towards the right side of Punggol Road and hit Miss Yeo Moi Liang, 53, who was using the pedestrian crossing. The second causing death charge also states that his van hit a stationary Mercedes-Benz which had stopped at the red light signal. Miss Yeo, who was sandwiched between Tan's van and the car, died. Tan is out on $10,000 bail. His passport was impounded. A pre-trial hearing is set for July 24. At least Jail for 2 Years

  14. My friend owns a hawker stall which he intends to rent out. It's been locked since 23rd Dec 07 til 29th Feb. SingPower sent him his utility bill for Jan 08 - S$155.66 and for Feb 08 - S$174.00. He was shocked and emailed them regarding the matter and told them that the stall was only used 3-5 days at most. Their reply shocked him further. They actually charged him for two months on an estimated amount. I don't know if this is actually normal, is anyone else also charged on an estimated amount? I would really like to know. Their email reply: Dear Mr Ng XXXXXXX I refer to your email of 13 Mar 08. 2 Your utility charges are calculated based on the readings registered by the meters installed at your premises. Your meters are read once in every two months. As your meters were not scheduled for reading in Feb 08, we use an estimated reading. We will adjust any over-estimation of charges for your Feb 08 bill when your meters are next read in Mar 08. 3 As a goodwill gesture, I have arranged for the waiver of the pink notice fee imposed on 6 Mar 08. The waiver will be reflected in your subsequent bill. 4 You may defer your payment of your Feb 08 bill to your Mar 08 bill due date. 5 If you require further clarification, please call our officers at 1800-2222 333. Yours sincerely XXXXXXXXX(Mr) Customer Care Officer Customer Services SP Services Ltd Co. Registration No. 199504470N

  17. BT-24 Jan 2008 Under Computer Misuse Act, they could face up to 20 years in jail, fine up to $125,000 By CONRAD RAJ (SINGAPORE) In an unprecedented action, seven former Citibankers were hauled into court yesterday to face a combined total of 1,223 charges, largely for stealing clients' information before joining rival banks and thereby allegedly violating sections of the Computer Misuse Act. The charges are said to have arisen from a complaint filed by Citibank with the police and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) after six of the seven defected from the bank in mid-2006 to join rival banks, including Switzerland's UBS Bank. All seven had been servicing high net worth clients with Citibank, with investments ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars to over $10 million. Citibank had earlier taken out civil proceedings against several of the seven charged, for having sent or taken confidential information via their computers. The US bank had in its suits alleged that some of the bankers had urged their rich clients to jump ship, taking about S$50 million of business to UBS. Those now charged in court include former Citibank branch manager Jonathan Seah, 44, and six others. They are former relationship managers Carel Low Siok Liang, 33; Wendy Quek Lien Lien, 30; Jelene Lee Kit Peng, 34; Esther Lim Siew May, 31; and Lydia Koh Meng Yang, 28. Each of them faces between three and 264 charges. Also charged was Low's assistant, service relationship manager Valarie Lim Ming Huey. They are alleged to have either accessed Citibank's computers without authorisation to get information or sent files containing customer information to email addresses outside the company. As some of the charges are under the enhanced provisions of the Computer Misuse Act, those so charged could face up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $125,000. Several of the charges were under the Banking Act, while one of the accused was charged with destroying evidence. They are said to have acted in three separate groups independently of each other. While the names of some of Citibank's clients were said to have appeared on the charge sheets, the court ordered that they not be made public. Seah, who was one of those who joined UBS in 2006, is said to have left the Swiss bank the same year for undisclosed reasons. He had been accused by Citibank of having sent confidential information, including details of customers and their investments, an organisational chart of the bank and personal appraisals of at least seven staff, to his personal email address. The bank had said that Seah had breached his contract and pointed out that the majority of the emails were sent a day before his resignation, the day itself and the day after. Esther Lim was accused by Citibank of forwarding confidential customer information to Seah including names, addresses, contact numbers, the value of assets and breakdown of investments before she left the bank. According to a Citibank spokesman, all the civil suits were 'favourably' settled during the course of last year. The accused were said to have compensated the bank. When it filed the civil suits, Citibank had said: 'The privacy of customer, proprietary or confidential information is one of our highest priorities. We will always act to protect the privacy of such information.' UBS, three of whose employees (Wendy Quek, Jelene Lee and Lydia Koh) were among the seven charged yesterday, is said to have placed the three under suspension pending the outcome of the case. A spokeswoman said: 'It is not appropriate for us to comment on this as it is a personal matter between the individuals and the authorities.' The unprecedented action by the authorities may put a curb on poaching of private bankers and others, especially professionals like lawyers, observers said.
  18. dear MCF-ers, for those of you who had fitted the GruppeM on your TC cars, can I ask if there is any noticeable improvement in performance, or is it just a piece of useless decor with perhaps some audio entertainment and when rev your engine. This thing looks nice, not cheap though. Kam sia!

  22. what are needed to turbo charged a stock car? from what i know i will need : turbo manifold a small little snail bov (is this neccessary?) a piggyback (can vafc be used or a e manage/unichip is needed?) a intercooler what else is needed huh?
  23. Seems like more n more car makers esp Jap brands are making heavier cars and putting in bigger displacement engines. With Oil prices trending up, I reckon soon the next trend will be a lot more cars getting turbo engines for increased power. Am thinking ahead n now I am even thinking maybe my next car could be a TC car. With my limited understanding, I was told Turbo charging simply means recylcing hot exhaust air to give added power, but lotsa heat is generated in the process. When I was talking to Subaru SE at their roadshow, they told me the STi even had a water cooling feature as TC engines easily overheat. I also heard of turbo lag. So for those who own TC cars, any pros/cons to share?
