  1. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said it will be zeroing in on housing estates where there had been cases of falling windows, for future inspections. BCA has been conducting windows inspections at private and HDB estates since 2006. This comes as the number of falling windows shot up 75 per cent in the first five months of the year. There were 35 cases of falling windows between January and May, compared to 20 in the same period last year. The number of fallen windows is on the rise, with 57 cases last year, up from 50 in 2010. The BCA's Building Plan and Management Group Deputy Director, Jeremy Tan said seven in 10 cases were due to poor maintenance. "For BCA, every fallen window is a serious incident. However, since 2004 there has been seven fallen windows incidents which have caused injury. Moving forward, we would like to encourage the public to periodically maintain their windows to ensure their window safety." Most of these cases involved casement windows which are attached to frames by hinges. 85 per cent of casement windows fell off because homeowners did not replace aluminium rivets with stainless steel ones. BCA and HDB said they have stepped up efforts to raise awareness, with 10 roving exhibitions on window safety planned for this year, compared to just one last year. Toolkits will also be distributed to residents to help them check their windows. The kits comprise of a mirror to help them check if their window screws are loose; a brush, and a bottle of oil to help them clean and lubricate joints and moveable parts. Homeowner Colin Khoo said the extra education efforts would help. "I think it's about proper education but I think sometimes, generally, windows we always believe that it's a very sturdy piece of equipment and nothing can happen and so over the many years, people tend to take it for granted that this construction is of sturdiness, so it's just being careful and being more aware I think at the end of the day about doing your window checks. And I think generally what BCA recommends is do it every half a year." Under the Building Maintenance and Strata Management Act, homeowners or tenants could be fined up to S$10,000, and jailed up to one year, if a window falls due to lack of maintenance. Those found to have casement windows with aluminium rivets also face a further penalty of S$5,000 and six months jail, for failing to retrofit their windows with stainless steel rivets. 4. I have conducted numerous road test on 5 models - comparing night clarity, day clarity, recording hours, viewing angle versus what is claimed on the product packaging... If you wanna know how they fare, please visit following URL:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQCCNfHKRR0...mp;feature=plcp My conclusion is:- - IR LEDs for night clarity is useless - many specifications are over-stated.e.g. viewing angle, G-sensor, HD quality, etc - HD quality does not equal to clarity. You may get lousy clarity with a BiG file which shortens your recording time. - There are many objects cannot be seen on a lousy night recording clip. Watch to believe... The choice is yours!
  5. Hi All, Pls check your battery condition prior to CNY. It is no fun to be stuck during CNY period where u are going to visit relatives and friends. Also for those who are very good in "calculation", it does not make sense for you to call for roadside assistance if you breakdown in the middle of nowhere, you will be charge higher on outside service on the battery replacement and if you are savvy enough, should you call for roadside assistance in 1st 2 days of CNY, you have to give an red packet as token of appreciation. You have till this weekend to check and have your battery replace. Good Luck and Happy and Prosperous Lunar Dragon New Year to All of You!!!!! cheers
  6. Not sure if this is the right place to post this. Met this Hyundai Avante from yishun going to CTE, with his high beam on the way. It was so bad that even after flipping down my anti-glare rear mirror, his head lights are still super powerful, much more powerful then those big vehicles! really lighting the entire road up. Noticed a young guy behind the wheels after he overtook me. So most likely is forget to turn off. & I wonder, technically speaking, is this consider as road hazard or not.. haha..

  15. Issit save to drive with engine check light on ?
  16. Today, while driving to Jurong on the PIE, my car suddenly drop gear and my engine check light came on I continued driving as I had an appointment ... maybe it's a bad choice ... nothing now maybe later got more problems. Anyway, finished my appointment, tried to start the car ... the check light still on It was already 5.30pm, drove straight to C&C Pandan Gardens .... hoping for the best. This F%#$^* service guy whom I approach for assistance came to my car, started it, play around with my air cond (on and off and on and off) ... then started talking to a friend, went away for about 5 mins ... came back and told me I had to leave my car for further check. Thought they are suppose to have this very expensive toy they call scanner that you plug into the car's ECU socket and it should tell you immediately what's wrong .... but that AS%$^%* say it's some electronic problem and they need at least 1/2 a day to troubleshoot I was very pissed off as he did not attempt to try and at least check before saying that he need to do a full test ... think he wanted to make my money more that solve my problem. I drove to the car park further down from the centre .... stop my car, took out all the fuses and relay related to the ECU and turn the start switch on ... hoping it will somehow reset the ECU ...... guess what, it worked Imagine, if I stupid stupid listen to that guy, will end up not having a car for the weekend .... still keeping my fingers crossed that the light will not come on tomorrow. I am still wondering what could be the problem ... maybe ECU going to die liao ... maybe should sell my car now So, for those who still trust C&C .... better watch your tail or have a bigger wallet. And does anyone have such an experience before ?

  22. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1130284/1/.html SINGAPORE: Member of Parliament (MP) for Mountbatten Lim Biow Chuan has conducted his own spot checks to verify complaints of irregular bus services in Mountbatten. According to Mr Lim's Facebook page, the checks were conducted on Monday and Thursday at two separate bus stops during the morning peak hour, between 8am and 9am. Mr Lim was accompanied by an officer from the Land Transport Authority during both checks. The first check was made at Jalan Batu, near the HDB estate at Tanjong Rhu while the second was at the bus stop at Block 56, Cassia Crescent. Mr Lim told Channel NewsAsia he was "horrified" that three bus services -- 158, 12 and 197 -- took half an hour to arrive, and said he has written to the Public Transport Council. He said by doing so, he hopes to influence the public transport operators to improve their service, and to stress the need for regular services. "I know how bus companies work," Mr Lim said. "They say there are traffic jams, breakdowns etc. I do empathise. But at the end of the day, bus commuters are frustrated and bus companies must know this." Mr Lim said residents had complained to him during the campaign period. Although he has made similar checks before, he said he decided to publicise his latest efforts on Facebook to be more visible to residents. Mr Lim said: "I realise that when you do it quietly, people don't realise you've been doing it, and come elections, they say you've not been doing anything". Mr Lim said he would follow up with SBS Transit and monitor the services for improvements. -CNA/wk Good sign.. In the past where got MP go do this spot check.. now it is coming.. well done.. and WP clinch aljunied GRC effort is not wasted. [thumbsup]

  24. Can't believe ST got the cheek to print letters of disillusioned cuckoos. ST Forum May 11, 2011 Reality check: It was a solid PAP victory WE MAY have overlooked the fact that this General Election was actually a step backward for the opposition, amid the euphoria of the Workers' Party's victories in Aljunied GRC and the single seat in Hougang. For a start, there will be only one elected opposition party in the new Parliament - the WP - compared with two in 2006 - the WP and the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), then led by Mr Chiam See Tong. The Singapore People's Party lost Potong Pasir, which was contested by his wife and successor Lina, and Mr Chiam failed in his bid to win Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. The results show that although the opposition parties offered better candidates than in previous elections, it was still not enough to convince the majority of the electorate of their calibre. Apart from Aljunied GRC and Hougang, the WP failed in Moulmein-Kallang GRC, East Coast GRC, Nee Soon GRC, and the single seats of Joo Chiat, Punggol East and Sengkang West. So the opposition has a long way to go before it can establish itself firmly in Singapore politics, let alone beat the ruling People's Action Party. I am sure it knows what it has to do. It has to prove itself worthy of the electorate's trust and confidence. On the other hand, Saturday's GE was a big success (yet again) for the PAP. Winning 81 seats out of 87 is a landslide, by any yardstick. And remember, in the process, it regained Potong Pasir after 27 years in the hands of Mr Chiam. The PAP's performance is a clear indication that the majority of Singaporeans still want the party to govern, despite their unhappiness, never mind that the party lost its first GRC and Hougang, and suffered a drop in the overall share of the vote. I look forward to watching how the PAP performs under its new mandate and whether the WP can deliver its promises to the voters of Aljunied GRC and Hougang. We can expect the verdict in the next general election. Anthony Oei
