  1. As a result of the rising tension in the Korean Peninsula, GM is making contingency plans to move workers and shift production out of the country. Speaking in an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, GM CEO Dan Akerson said, "We are making contingency plans for the safety of our employees to the extent that we can." GM is the third largest carmaker in South Korea employing 17,000 people with an annual output of 1.4 million vehicles. About 1.3 million units are exported to Europe and the U.S. One of these models exported is the Chevrolet Spark subcompact (above). Akerson added that it is difficult to shift production out of South Korea but may have to do so if the region continues to destabilise as part of long term planning. However, according to a report on Wall Street Journal, Akerson has already decided to move production to other plants. Should a war take place, Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fourth largest auto maker after General Motors, Volkswagen Group, and Toyota, is definitely going to be affected as well. This could result in wide ranging impact on the global automotive industry. At the time of writing this article, North Korea has moved a second mid range missile to its east coast and loaded both on mobile launchers, fueling fears of an imminent firing. Let there be peace on Earth.

  3. [extract] United States president Barack Obama's second inauguration took place just recently. As usual, the president arrived in the presidential state car which is commonly known as the Cadillac One or at times, The Beast. Not much is known about the vehicle as its specifications are heavily guarded by the US Secret Service. But, over the few years, some of these heavily guarded secrets were leaked out and below are some of the things you don

  5. Losing a car to theft is one of the most aggravating thing that could happened to a car owner especially if that person has put his/her blood, sweat and tears into it. Stolen vehicles usually end up being stripped into parts or shipped out of the country totally and the chances of getting it back are rather low. In Brisbane, Australia; a rather strange incident happened when dock workers inspected a container that has been sitting for ten years. In it, they found a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible. In 2002, the Corvette was reported stolen by its owner in Australia. After an intensive search by the authorities and nothing was found, the owner received compensation by the insurance company (Suncorp Insurance). Recently, dock workers were inspecting containers at a dock in Brisbane and they discovered a container that no one could account for. After opening it, they found the missing Corvette, sitting on time flattened tyres. The car was considered to be in a rather good condition, not too bad after ten years. The third generation Corvette (also commonly known as the Corvette Stingray) has only 77,000 kilometres on the odometer before it went missing. It seems that it was a base model Corvette since it has the 327 cubic inch (5.4 litre) small block V8 engine fitted. Additionally, the car was fitted with a four speed manual transmission. Records show that the car was built on December 1967 and that means it is an early production third generation Corvette. Since the insurance company has already compensated the owner, they will auction the car off in order to recover any losses or make some profit from it. After sitting for ten years, the car needs some work to make it road worthy. Once it is ready, the Corvette is expected to fetch around $15,000 to $20,000 (in Aussie dollars). Image credit: Drive
  6. Sometimes in life, when you are looking for something or someone, you end up finding something else. That is quite natural as I strongly believe it has happened to many people at a point of their life. It happened to an American man who was searching for his birth mother and unexpectedly ended up with a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS that has been in the family for many years. Zach S from Virginia, United States; first saw the Camaro RS/SS in 2006 when he met his birth mother in Arizona after years of searching. During the meeting, both mother and son shared many stories and pictures. When Zach mentioned to his mother that he was into cars, his mother told him that his grandma's car was stored in the back yard under a tarpaulin. Under the canvas sheet was the 1967 Chevy Camaro RS that has been stored in the harsh conditions of the Arizona desert for more than twenty years. According to Zach, it was like a time capsule. The car was purchased new by Zach's grandmother from a dealer in Los Angeles. She ordered the car with the RS/SS package. It came with the RS package trimming and it was fitted with a 5.7-litre V8 engine that delivers around 295bhp. The car also came with a rare bench seat, automatic column shifters, power steering and hidden headlights. When Zach's mother passed away in 2008, he asked his brother whether if he could buy the vehicle but his brother was not willing to part with it at that moment. Two years later, Zach got a telephone call from his brother who said that he was ready to sell the Camaro to Zach. And so, Zach hired a company to ship the Camaro to his home in Virginia. Zach's grandmother have kept all forms of documentation of the car in a diary and he found out that the Camaro has never been titled outside of California. Zach has all the documents in the diary and it also included several other things such as a letter from the dealership's salesperson thanking her for buying the car and two speeding tickets from the same policeman in the same month. Zach intends to get the car fixed and drive it around for a few years before passing it down to his sister's children in order for the family's future generations to cherish and enjoy. 8. The late Neil Armstrong was a very famous man due to him being the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. Astronauts of that time were on the same level as celebrities. And in order to drum up sales, a Chevrolet dealer (Rathmann Chevrolet) in Florida tried to get as many astronauts as they could to drive one of their cars. Astronauts were given a special lease to allow them to trade in for a new Corvette every year and in 1967, Armstrong got a blue Chevrolet Corvette that came with a 390bhp V8 engine and mated to a four speed transmission. The following year, he traded it for a 1968 model and the 1967 Corvette was sold to a NASA employee who has owned the car for 44 years. The car has not been started since September 1981 and the owner has mentioned that he kept the car in a climate controlled area. Over the years, the owner has added fender flares and aftermarket wheels to it. Additionally, the carburettor, water pump and exhaust system has also been replaced. The owner has offered the car for sale at this current condition and a Corvette restorer has bought it. Joe Crosby, the man who bought the car, has mentioned that it will not go through a restoration due to its historical significance. He stated that once a car has been restored, it can

  10. In one of my earlier articles, I mentioned that Opel will unveil the all-new 1.6-litre four cylinder Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) petrol engine at the upcoming Moscow International Auto Salon. According to gminsidenews.com, this new power plant will eventually be heading to North America and Chevrolet will be the main user it. The Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Sonic are all expected to receive the engine between 2014 and 2015. The next generation GMC Terrain is also expected to utilize the 1.6-litre turbo. I am looking forward to this version of the Cruze as it will finally have the firepower to go head on against the popular Jetta Sport. The forced-fed unit will most likely make about 180bhp with 300Nm of torque. It will also be equipped with start/stop function to enhance fuel efficiency. This engine will be GM

  12. In Singapore, finding an old classic car is something not that easy nor is it common due to the fact that our country is very small and there are not much of these cars left. But in big countries such as the United States, barn finds happen rather often and sometimes that find could be a gem. The vehicle you see in the pictures here is a 1961 C1 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster with 93423 miles (150,349 km) on the odometer and has been parked since 1968. The car was found by the guys at Barn Finds, a web based group who hunt for old vehicles and classic cars and publish them on their site for enthusiasts to snatch them up. Apparently, this particular C1 Corvette was found in Las Vegas and it has two owners since new. The current owner has parked the car for the last time in 1968 and it has not run since then. The Corvette has a 4.6-litre dual carburettor V8 engine that generates around 270bhp. The weather condition in Las Vegas has left the car in a terrible state. The car is also covered in huge amount of dust, both exterior and interior of it. Right now, it is on sale on eBay Motors and it is being sold with a hard top, without the convertible top and also without any of the convertible top
  13. Toyota's three-year stretch as the world's largest automaker ended in 2011, when the company endured production setbacks in the aftermath of the devastating Japan earthquake and tsunami. However, Toyota is back with a vengeance and posted a 15.8% increase in sales in the US during the first quarter of 2012. On top of that, the Japanese automaker is on top of the global sales chart again based on Q1 2012 results. Toyota moved 2.49 million vehicles globally in the first three months, edging GM's 2.28 million sales and Volkswagen's 2.16 million, Bloomberg News reported. In 2011, GM was the best selling brand globally. GM sold 9.03 million vehicles while Volkswagen and Toyota moved 8.16 million and 7.9 million respectively. However, GM seemed relax about the fact that it is beginning to lose its sales crown for 2012. GM spokesman, Jim Cain, commented that one quarter is an awfully short window of time when GM has a big vision for global growth. "GM today is a profitable, growing company, and our plan is to grow more and earn more," said Cain in an e-mail. "We've got the ingredients to do both over time, especially with our aggressive new product launch calendar and the momentum Chevrolet, in particular, is building around the world," he added. Indeed, the first quarter is like the 10km mark in a marathon race. There is still a long journey ahead for GM and Toyota. It is still too early for Toyota to rejoice.
  14. [extract] When Chevrolet introduced the new Sonic (known as the Aveo in Singapore) with the 1.4-Liter turbocharged petrol engine, it was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Now, GM announced that it will be available with the option of a 6-speed automatic. This is good business strategy as not everyone prefers to switch gears by themselves.
  15. Hi All, Anyone knows when this model coming to our shore? It is a crossover of SUV/MPV .
  16. Chevrolet has confirmed that the new 2.0L direct-injected turbo Ecotec petrol unit will be offered on the Malibu in the US this fall. Producing a maximum of 259 bhp with a peak torque of 353Nm between 1,700rpm to 5,500 rpm, the Malibu goes from 0 to 96km/h in a very respectable timing of 6.3 seconds. A quick search on the internet shows that the Golf GTI Edition 30 does so in 6.4 seconds and this really tells how quick the new turbocharged Malibu is. In addition to the US, the Detroit automaker also mentioned that this exciting power plant will be offered in a variety of markets including Canada and Israel. Measuring 4,859mm in length, 1,854mm in width and 1,462mm in height, General Motors indicated at launch that the latest Malibu will be offered in nearly 100 countries across the world. The Malibu rides on GM's Epsilon II platform, which is found on a variety of vehicles including the Opel Insignia. Sporting a Cruze-inspired face, the Malibu was also developed to replace the unloved Epica outside the US market.
  17. The Chevrolet Volt has now earned the right to call itself the 2012 European Car of the Year. The award adds to the long list of notable awards that the electric car has earned so far, such as the North American Car of the Year and the World Green Car of the Year awards for 2011. The panel of 59 automotive journalists came together and awarded a total of 330 points to the Chevrolet Volt. Second place was claimed by the Volkswagen Up! with 281 points and the Ford Focus came in third in the voting with 256 points. "It is a proud moment for us and an honor to receive this award from Europe's leading jury of automotive journalists," said Susan Docherty, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe. "Our car demonstrates that electric driving can be fun and reliable without ever compromising the owners' lifestyle." The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufactured by General Motors. The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its plug-in battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge, at which point its gasoline engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle's range. However, a multiple-award winning car may not translate to equally successful sales result. As a result of rising inventory and poor sales, General Motors made the decision to halt the production of the Volt for five weeks from March 19 to April 23.

  19. [extract] One of the several vehicles showcased by Chevrolet at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show is the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS (also known as the Aveo in some countries). 21. According to SgCarMart.com, the all-new Chevrolet Sonic is expected to arrive in Singapore some time in Q4 2012. However, there has been some negative publicity before the car makes it here. The American hatchback recently found itself in an embarrassing situation as the Detroit-based automaker revealed that some of its newly launched Sonic might be missing an inner or outer front brake pad. Chevrolet came to know of the problem on 29 Nov 11 when a customer brought a 2012 Sonic to a US dealership and complained about noises emitting from the brakes. Fortunately, Chevrolet noted that here are no known crashes or injuries related to the manufacturing defect. To address the problem, GM has issued a formal recall that involved 4,873 Sonic models built between 2 June 11 and 2 November 11. In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM said that a missing pad could result in reduced brake system performance, increasing the risk of a crash. The company will notify owners and have its dealers inspect the front brakes for a missing inner or outer pad. "If a brake pad is missing, dealers will install new inner and outer pads, a new brake caliper, and a new rotor. This service will be performed free of charge," GM said in a statement. The recall is expected to begin on or before 14 January 12.
  22. Many of us know what a muscle car is. But do we really know the factors that place a certain car in the muscle car category? Initially I thought that I knew so much about muscle cars but after reading a certain book about these cars, I became more knowledgeable and some of the so called facts that I previously thought were true are actually not. And now I would like to share them with you. 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible There are many varying opinions on what qualifies as a muscle car but before I touch on that let us see what does not qualify as a muscle car. First of all, it is not a piece of Italian exotic, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc, nor it is a German performance car (Porsche, etc.). Even a British make sports car would not fit the bill (although there were muscle cars from other countries later on). All the abovementioned cars are too complex, specialised or efficient. Sports cars are not really considered as a muscle car. So, what really qualifies as a muscle car? It is essentially a North American phenomenon; in other words, in the beginning, it should be American made. The basic concept of a muscle car is taking a mid-sized American 2-door car and put in a large displacement V8 engine. The car itself should not be complex, upmarket or fancy. And usually, it should have a rear seating arrangement. 1966 Dodge Charger The muscle car concept is as simple as that. Furthermore in the beginning, the people who are interested in muscle cars are usually young and men. They are not interested in technical sophistication, excellent handling and even top speed. 1970 Dodge Challenger To the American youth of that time who were raised on drag racing, traffic lights street racing and hot-rodding, the most important factors to them were the size of the engine, horsepower and acceleration. In other words, all that they care about is straight line speed. 1958 Ford Thunderbird And when the big 3 American car manufacturers realised about this increasing trend among the youth, the companies started a power race to offer big engine displacements, huge horsepower and lesser seconds over the standing quarter. 1957 Chrysler 300C Before the era of muscle cars, the usage of V8 engines was already pretty rife during the 1950s. Companies like Ford and Chrysler all had their cars fitted with their V8 engines, for example the Ford Thunderbird and Chrysler 300. Their size were too big to place them in the muscle car category. Anyway, at that time the term muscle car has not been known or created. 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Although at that time these cars were not considered as muscle cars but they had one thing in common; they were built for powerful performance and this is one of the factors that the American youth of that time desired for a mid-sized, lighter-shelled car with big, powerful engines. 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Conventionally, many would say or argue that the 1965 Pontiac GTO (top most picture) was the first true muscle car. 2-door mid-sized American car, huge V8 engine and it sits four people; all fits into the muscle car category. It also began a new car class that offered an affordable and stunning performance package. 1964 Ford Mustang The plan and idea for the GTO nearly did not happen. It came about when in 1963, General Motors would not produce overtly sporty cars and Pontiac was restricted with a standard 300 cu inch (4.8 litre) engine for their intermediate sized cars. And this upset some of their managers and engineers as Pontiac has always been a performance car marque and these same people are also fans of fast cars. 1968 Ford Torino GT FastBack These same people (one of them was John DeLorean who founded the DeLorean company) also felt that the only way to sell cars was by producing image-building cars and eventually the GTO plan went ahead. Before I continue, let me add that GM made all sorts of parts (engine, chassis, etc.) for NASCAR racing and they were road legal at that time. These parts were, at times, used for their production models. Pontiac fitted a 6.375 litre V8 engine together with a mix-and-match of existing parts and assembled them on the production line. This resulted in the GTO, made for truly affordable performance and the GTO fits into the muscle car concept, huge V8 engine in a smaller-sized car and it also started the trend. Other automakers soon followed with their own versions of this new car trend. Ford had its Mustang and Torino models, Dodge came out with the Charger and Challenger and Chevy had its Camaro and Chevelle models. Some people would argue that some of the models I mentioned above are in the pony car category but some of the pony car models are qualified to be in the muscle car category due to the dealer options available for those pony cars (huge V8 engines, etc.). As long as it fits the muscle car bill, many would regard it as one. 1968 Holden Monaro Earlier on I did mention about muscle cars manufactured outside of America. Cars like the Australian Ford Falcon and Holden Monaro fits the muscle category. But sadly, some muscle car purists do not consider these cars to be a muscle car due to them not being American made. 1972 Ford Falcon XA GT After the decline of the muscle car era during the 1970s (due to the oil crisis) there have been a resurgence in the muscle car category. Models like the Mustang, Charger and Camaro still remains till today and as long as the demand is there, we will get to see more of these cars. 24. 16 years after his beloved 1969 Camaro was stolen, Edward Neeley located his long lost car by chance while searching the internet for a car to replace it. Neeley calls the fact he found the car, which he had first purchased 30 years ago at the age of 18, "divine intervention". Although it's great to hear a story about a stolen car being reunited with an owner that loved it, this story isn't without a downside. What Neeley called "divine intervention" would likely be given a different name by the Camaro's current owner Brent Dockery. Dockery purchased the car for $16,000 4 years ago on Ebay without having any knowledge that the car was stolen. Since then he has spent a considerable amount of money ($10,000), time and effort restoring the Camaro. Below is a picture of how the Camaro looks like currently. The two men are currently trying to reach an agreement regarding the parts and money Dockery put into the car while he had it. So far it has been difficult, but Dockery concedes that the car will return home after 16 long years once the men find a way to settle the matter. Neeley understandably is overjoyed at the impending return of his missing Camaro after such a long time. Dockery plans to track down the person he purchased the car from in an attempt to recoup some of his losses.
