  1. Lying children will grow up to be successful citizens The earlier a child starts telling convincing lies the more likely they are to be a success in later life, new research suggests. By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent Published: 6:00PM BST 16 May 2010 Researchers have found that the ability to tell fibs at the age of two is a sign of a fast developing brain and means they are more likely to have successful lives. They found that the more plausible the lie, the more quick witted they will be in later years and the better their abiliy to think on their feet.

  6. This is terrible news... Always the innocent children suffer. http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...109-178695.html I'm just guessing that it's always partly due to money problems. Imagine how much worse the situation would get once the IRs open their doors...
  7. Hi all, Few of my friends who are more successful in business ventures have accumulated enough wealth that they don't require their sons/daughter to support them. To them, their wealth are not their children wealth. Some stopped giving financial assistance as soon as their kids grown up. For example, they share the same roof, living in landed property, owned a S-class or 7 series but Son drives a Hyundai Getz and daughter drives a Toyota Vios. The parent will not lend money to the kids, some even wanted to charge the kids rental. Good or bad? Regards,
  8. Just had a fun talk with one of my chinese turned singapore citizen colleague, this is his story, a bit long but worth a see: He come from Shanghai to Singapore to study at age of 18. Turned PR after finished his studies and working in Singapore, go back to Shanghai, get married as per his parents requirements and later his wife become PR too. They become Singapore Citizens (pink IC) 5 years ago and bore 2 childs, both Singapore Citizens. Nothing fanciful about his life and according to him, a lot of Chinese has turned Citizens in this way every year. What is different is that these new citizens has a whole lot of cash that can be spent in Singapore. As he said, his grand parents was already affected by the one child policy in China, and gave birth to his father, and again, his father and mother, both single childs, left their fortune to him alone. When he migrate to Singapore, he of course bring his bank account with him. He has bought a private apartment here, but he can proudly say that his children will have no problem in applying for HDB / Condo the next time, even if the prices raise up to the million dollar level. (sure is stuck up when he says this). Made me worry for my children all the same, how do our children fight against these children of the new citizens who has already inherited so much wealth? Just a pondering thought. and like he say, there are more and more of these new citizens that comes to Singapore every year........ hmmmmmmmm.
  9. Where do children come from? Hmmm... Here's one way to illustrate. WARNING: It's a little crude, and hence may NOT be safe for work.

It is way too expensive and I'm thinking of DIY myself. However I have no knowledge of the material and where to purchase the material. Hence I'm here to seek some help. Canopy Material Requirements: 1. Light and translucent. What type of fabric is suitable? Is it polyester fabric or nylon fabric? 2. Where can i get the above mentioned fabric in Singapore? Thank you in advance for your help
  12. Hi All My less-than-2-week-old Honda Accord (CP1) today got dented by children cycling around in the estate. A chronology of events follows: a) 6:00pm : Took my dog down for his walk, went by the car and saw the licence plate scratched. Further investigation showed a dent on the area above the driver-side headlights. b) 6:05pm : Saw some children cycling, and when one kid rode by, he looked at the car. The rest of the kids (totalling 4 of them) rode past at high speed. My suspicions were raised immediately, and quickly brought my dog back upstairs. c) 6:08pm : Went down with wife to investigate - swearing that whoever did this, would die a terrible death. Went back upstairs to call my SE, who advised that since it was a brand new car, it should go back to Kah Motor to get a proper paint job. d) 6:10pm : Saw some kids still riding around. Quickly went down with my wife to the carpark. e) 6:12pm : When one of the kids rode by, I stepped in front of him and asked him "Which one of you punks crashed into my car?" To which this kid quickly turned around and pointed to his friend and said "Him". I called him over and hung on to his bike. He said he only fell down, and that his bike was not high enough to hit the car. I asked him for this address, home number and parents' contacts. To be sure he was telling the truth, I held his bike and told my wife to go upstairs to get a pen and paper. We recorded his particulars. Unfortunately, she did not have a mobile so I told her "Hold him ransom until I come back". f) 6:20pm : I quickly went upstairs to get my mobile, came down and called his mother. His mother and father appeared shortly after. Mother was apologetic, but father was an ass. I told the father tomorrow I will take the car back to KM. Father said this is only body work, no need to go back to Honda. I insisted. He said you can go ahead with your attitude and they may not want to pay. ------------------------------------ What I feel is that the car is still brand new - hence it should go back to Kah Motors. If the parents do not want to pay, what is my next course of action? Small Claims Tribunal? Die-die, the car IS going back to Kah Motors - as I am sure many of us here would send a new car back to the agents, right? I am still fuming mad - and at the same time cursing that family.

  17. i dunno if it's just me.. or that the reporters are putting up more news of such accidents. BUT it does seems that there are more & more & some more incidents and accidents involving heavy vehicles. wat's wrong with these drivers? gees ---------- A MOTHER, out on a morning walk with her two children, pushed her teenage daughter and toddler son to safety when she saw an out-of-control lorry veering towards them at Toa Payoh on Friday. But she was hit herself and is fighting for her life now in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The housewife in her 40s, identified only as Madam Shanti, was taking a leisurely stroll with her eldest daughter, Pratheepa, 15, and three-year-old son along Lorong 8 - near their flat in Block 255 - when a container truck and a lorry laden with vegetables collided into each other at about 9.45 am. The impact sent the lorry skidding across the road where the three pedestrains were walking. Instintively, Madam Shanti pushed her daugther and son away from the path of the runaway lorry. But it was too late for her to avoid the lorry, which hit her and sent her flying into the air. She landed on the pavement a few metres away, bleeding profusely. She was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and underwent emergency surgery. Her son suffered a fractured hip when he fell and was taken to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. A distraught Pratheepa told The Straits Times at the TTSH: 'It was a nightmarish sight seeing my mum being flung up into the air.' 'She did not think about her own safety when she pushed us to safety. I am very worried about her.' Pratheepa said she has another sister, Nithia, 13, who was in school when the accident happened. The container truck driver was unhurt but the lorry driver -- a Mr Goh in his 30s -- suffered minor injuries and was taken to TTSH.

  20. Hi fellow parents, allow me to make a passionate plea to all of you to buckle and secure your kids and infants when travelling in your vehicle. I've seen many people carrying babies and sitting on the front passenger seat, kids standing with their face resting on the front dashboard with Airbag, kids in the back seats unsecured, babies in rear facing baby seats in the front passenger seats. Here are some true incidents that happen to my friends and relatives: 1) Niece was standing between the front seats and travelling along CTE. Car was involved in a chain collision. Niece flew into the front windscreen. Concussion. My cousin still didn't learn from the incident and continues to let her kids ride unsecured. 2) Friend was driving along Adam road towards thomson road on a rainy day. Car went into a spin and daughter was thrown around the car. Broke her leg. Now walks with a limp. 3) Friend puts rear facing baby seat in the front passenger seat. Wouldn't consider putting it behind - reason: Baby cries. Another common mistake, adult puts on seatbelt and carries the kid. In an accident >50kph, no one can hold on to a 10kg infant. Adult shares seatbelt with infant (infant on adult's lap). In an accident, the adult will be thrown forward and squash the infant. I'm a father of 2 and my kids are trained from the get go, no seat belt, car won't move. Get them use to it from day one, do not give in to their whims. We never plan to get into an accident, it just happens. SO please, be responsible, don't allow chance to hurt your bundle of joy.
  21. Wed Dec 12, 2007 4:51pm EST By Anne Harding NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Obese children who watch a lot of television are more likely to have high blood pressure than heavy children who don't spend as much time in front of the tube, the results of a new study shows. Increased psychological stress and junk food eaten while watching TV could be factors in the relationship, principal investigator Dr. Jeffrey B. Schwimmer of the University of California, San Diego, told Reuters Health. Obese children who watched 2 to 4 hours of TV each day were 2.5 times more likely than their peers who watched less TV to have high blood pressure, he and his colleagues found, while kids who watched more than 4 hours daily had more than triple the risk of having high blood pressure. TV watching time clearly influences obesity and high blood pressure is a known consequence of obesity, Schwimmer and his team point out in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. To investigate this relationship, they evaluated 546 children between 4 and 17 years old who were seeking treatment for obesity. Forty-three percent had high blood pressure. Most of the study participants with high blood pressure watched 2 hours or more of television. Time spent watching television was also associated with the severity of obesity, the researchers found. Kids who watch more TV may also be eating more fatty, salty foods, which could directly contribute to high blood pressure, Schwimmer and his colleagues note. Studies have shown that children who watch more TV experience more perceived psychological stress, Schwimmer noted, and evidence is mounting that stress can alter how the brain communicates with other organs, affecting blood pressure and body fat accumulation and distribution. The findings underscore the importance of limiting children's TV viewing to less than 2 hours a day, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, he said, and that this may be particularly important for overweight and obese children. Blood pressure is often not measured in children, and if it is measured, "it's often not done correctly," Schwimmer added. "I would encourage parents of children to raise the issue of blood pressure with their child's doctor." SOURCE: American Journal of Preventive Medicine, December 2007.
