  8. SHANGHAI/HONG KONG - Holders of China Eastern Airlines' Shanghai- and Hong Kong-listed shares on Tuesday rejected a deal to sell a 24 per cent stake in the country's third-largest carrier to Singapore Airlines for US$920 million. The announcement was made after a shareholders' meeting in Shanghai. China Eastern needed two-thirds of both its Shanghai-listed A and Hong Kong-listed H-share minority shareholders to approve the stake sale to Singapore Airlines and Singaporean investment agency Temasek Holdings. Majority shareholder China Eastern Air Holding Co abstained from the vote. The move opens the door to bigger rival Air China, whose parent, China National Aviation Corp (CNAC) - which owns 3.9 per cent of China Eastern - has said it would offer at least HK$5.00 per China Eastern share versus an agreed price of HK$3.80 in the Singapore deal. Singapore Airlines and Temasek have said they would not be prepared to return to the negotiating table or increase their offer, which was agreed with China Eastern last September. -- REUTERS
  9. This is a very sad case that I would like to share with you'll. A China FT working for my gf's dad's company was knocked down by a lorry while cycling at night near his quarters. He had been cycling by the side of the road when a lorry's side mirror hit the back of his head causing him to fall and again hit his head hard against the curb. He was knocked unconscious with severe bleeding from the head. The lorry driver was responsible enough to stop and call for help. At the hospital, the China FT fell into a coma and the doctor said that he suffered serious brain damage and would most probably be disabled for life. His father and cousin has flown over here and only recently became conscious but isn't able to talk or move and lost his memory. He would be flown back to China soon via special arrangements. As for investigation by the TP, it is going nowhere as there is no witness. Although they are still investigating, I fear it may be futile. The TP cannot get the China FT's statement as he can't even talk or remember anything and he will be flown back China soon. The lorry driver claimed that he only hit him lightly and the China FT fell on his own and for info he has not visited the China FT once at the hospital. As for compensation and the cost, my gf's dad has kindly paid the hospital fees and the flight cost, 20k++ total, even though the incident happened outside working hours which does not make the company liable. Compensation cannot be claimed on the lorry driver's insurance as it has to be done by the victim and with the China FT's current state, impossible. Social services has also declined to sponsor anything which is a shame. My gf's dad has already done his best to help this worker, engaging a lawyer to sue for compensation would be costly and risky, plus he's is only a small company. Is there anything that can be done here? Just imagine the pain of his parents and he's their only son.

  11. China cremator dumps half-burnt bodies to save fuel HONG KONG - CHINA'S worst fuel crunch in years has led a crematorium to dump half-burnt corpses to try to save on diesel costs, a Hong Kong newspaper said on Friday. Villagers in Hengyang county, in the southern province of Hunan, discovered the practice when an 'unbearable stench' started coming from the site, and tried to block a road on Wednesday to stop funeral vehicles from delivering more bodies. The village sent people to investigate the smell and the South China Morning Post said they saw 'crematorium workers putting half-burnt human remains and organs in plastic bags and throwing them into a nearby ditch.' 'As the price of diesel rose, we saw more and more bags thrown out from the crematorium,' the paper quoted Mr Xiao Gaoyi, a village representative and one of the witnesses, as saying. China was hit by its worst fuel supply crisis in four years from October to November, as a widening gap between low, state-regulated domestic prices and market-driven international prices forced Chinese refiners to cut output. Fuel in many parts of the country was rationed and there were long queues at petrol stations. An increase of nearly 10 per cent in the prices of domestic diesel and gasoline from Nov 1, the first in almost a year and a half, failed to lift refining margins back into the black. -- REUTERS http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_184373.html dunno our upcoming Funeral Hub will also go green mark like them anot?

  16. Man in China dies after three-day Internet session Mon Sep 17, 2007 6:08 AM ET Loke like he engage in Xtreme 'sports'!!! BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man dropped dead after playing Internet games for three consecutive days, state media said on Monday as China seeks to wean Internet addicts offline. The man from the southern boomtown of Guangzhou, aged about 30, died on Saturday after being rushed to the hospital from the Internet cafe, local authorities were quoted by the Beijing News as saying. "Police have ruled out the possibility of suicide," the newspaper said, adding that exhaustion was the most likely cause of death. It did not say what game he was playing. China, worried about the spread of pornography and politically incorrect content, has banned the opening of new cybercafes this year and issued orders limiting the time Internet users can spend playing online. In April, President Hu Jintao launched a campaign to rid the Internet of "unhealthy" content and make it a platform for Communist Party doctrine.

  21. China rejects pork imports from U.S., Canada Mon Sep 17, 2007 9:47 AM ET BEIJING (Reuters) - China has rejected shipments of pork kidney from the United States and of spare ribs from Canada after finding traces of a banned growth agent in them, in the latest volley of cross-border accusations over product quality. The Xinhua news agency cited the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) as saying that the 18.4-tonne shipment of frozen kidneys and the 24-tonne shipment of frozen pork ribs had been returned to the exporters by local quarantine officials in southern Guangdong province. The growth agent ractopamine, commonly used in the United States, is at the centre of negotiations between U.S. and Chinese officials over the pork trade. China has banned use of ractopamine and refuses to import pork containing it. Richard Raymond, the U.S. Agriculture Department's undersecretary for food safety, said on Thursday following meetings with the AQSIQ that he hoped Beijing could change its stance on ractopamine if Codex Alimentarius, an international food safety body, could endorse tolerance levels for it. China has highlighted several quality concerns over U.S. products in recent months, in apparent response to complaints in Washington about the safety of Chinese exports ranging from toys to toothpaste. Beijing is also taking steps to clean up its own manufacturing sector, whose reputation has been tarnished by recent product recalls, including for lead-tainted toys. Separately, Xinhua said that authorities had reprimanded dozens of factories in eastern Zhejiang province after finding that 40 percent of the children's clothing they produced did not meet quality standards. The district where the factories are located, in Huzhou city, makes one fourth of the country's children's garments, Xinhua said. It cited the local quality supervision administration as saying their "quality index" was at its lowest since 2003. The garments had problems with their dyes, fiber content and stitching, Xinhua said, adding that none of the companies involved exported their products. The inspection was part of a nationwide campaign to improve product quality and food safety in the wake of the recent scandals, it said.
