  1. Hi all the Chinese song lovers out there, any nice songs to recommend lately? I like this two lately,
  2. If there is ever a Guinness record for stupidest things on earth, this one shall make it to the top 10, at least. I wonder how the pigeon is going to respond when the charge shit sheet is read out to him, and what will be the penalty for spying. "If you are found guilty for spying under section 123 of SMLJ ACT, you may face a penalty of up to RS100,000 fine, jail for up to 10 years (err pigeon life span is how long ah?) or be BBQ (death penalty)" Hahahaha Pigeon Suspected Of Being Chinese Spy By Police In India, Detained For 8 Months Source: https://mustsharenews.com/pigeon-spy-india/ A pigeon was suspected by the Indian police of being a Chinese spy, and detained for as long as eight months. The bird was finally released after an animal welfare group reached out to the police. It had aroused suspicion due to an illegible “message” on its wings. It started in May 2023, when the police in Mumbai found a bird that had what was thought to carry a “message” on its wings. Though the “words” were illegible, they seemed to be in a “Chinese-like script”, reported The Times Of India (TOI). It also had two rings tied to its leg, which made it more suspicious. The pigeon was sent to the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA) to be medically examined as part of police investigations. It ended up staying there for an “astonishing” eight months, PETA India said. Recently, the hospital asked the police whether they could release the bird, which was healthy and taking up a cage for no good reason. However, no appropriate response was received. PETA India reaches out to police PETA India thus reached out to the police, requesting them to allow BSDPHA to release the pigeon. The organisation said that a 2011 court judgement stated that birds have a “fundamental right to live free in the open sky” and should not be caged. Another court order in 2015 also disallowed the caging of birds for business or other purposes. Initially, the pigeon was charged with spying. However, investigations revealed that the bird had taken part in racing events in Taiwan and accidentally flown to India, according to TOI. The charge was dropped and the police eventually granted the bird’s release. It was subsequently released on the hospital premises on Wednesday (31 Jan).
  3. Just a simple question, no controversy here. I notice some people here read and follow Chinese language media. For me, while I can speak Chinese (and have worked in China), I'm a bit illiterate at reading Chinese words. I mostly read in English.
  4. Hello, Any recommendation? Is Hanvision PX2101 e-dictionary from Creative good? Thanks.
  5. Any bro can suggest website to download Chinese ringtones for iPhone? Thanks!
  6. This is a good start The bosses interviewed said the surcharge is similar to previous years and has not been significantly increased due to recent inflation.
  7. Lately, I realised that my younger boy seemed to be intriqued by the ceiling in the bedroom. He's 3 half years old by the way and his attention when looking at the ceiling can be quite unnerving. He will stare blankly at a certain spot until we call him then his focus will shift away from it. My wife and I tried many times to ask him what he's staring but he will just keep mum. What adds to our worry is that the linkway between Tampines Mall and Century Square which has become our weekly affair for shopping, my young one would be very disturbed and would close his eyes tightly whenever we passed through that walkway. After that he'll be fine. I've heard that kids his age are more 'prone' to seeing these 'things'. Perhaps, I should seek a medium to see what's at the ceiling that's getting his attention every night. Any medium to recommend?
  8. Let's start with this old song, one of a great singer from Singapore to bring back the memories of those everlasting songs 黄清元 (Huang Qing Yuen) - Man Li https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_oBFdIUqwc
  9. Our Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam's response to the video. Racism is a sensitive topic to talk about in Singapore but it doesn't mean we should avoid it and pretend that it does not exist. Looking at the world today and even in Singapore, we can no longer shy away from touchy subjects but should stand up to condemn such actions. Indeed a worrying trend and seems like we are starting to see an uptick here.
  10. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_planning_and_policy_in_Singapore Officially, its ethnic composition is approximately 76.8% Chinese, 13.9% Malay, 7.9% Indian, while the remaining 1.4% are mainly Others, a miscellaneous category.[5] Given this diversity, the language policy in Singapore aims at cultivating amongst its citizens a bilingual proficiency in the English language and a mother tongue that is officially assigned to the specific ethnic communities. Although the English language is excluded from the list of official mother tongues (Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Tamil), it is still recognised as an official language for practical reasons such as ensuring socio-economic mobility. Anybody you know can speak well bilingually or multilingually? Not that kind of glass half full half empty kind.
  11. Hi all, would like to seek help on my knee, after every ball game my knee always swollen and pain, take about 4-5 days to heal, still on glucosamine , would like to see a sinseh for help.
  12. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10159106344728766&id=165507888765 Look.. what I scared the most.. slowly we are progressing to a stage where every single thing that happened and labeled it as racist. Hope this is an isolating incident, if not we are in a big trouble.. There are 2 big concern. 1. The way both mainstream and or non mainstream wrote their article on their agenda. News article can have many way of writing, and they way the article is written can subconsciously led us to think in certain direction that the news article want us to believe in. That's very dangerous if say xzy news media want us to believe that so and so race is racist against another race or so on. 2. The use of social media and it outspread. As we all know social media can magnify things if it went viral. What it all mean is that things can get stroke up and become very negative or even cause more anger among others. So that itself is very dangerous weapon.
  13. Be afraid, be very afraid. Anything you own made in china is possibly doing that without your knowledge. https://www.scmp.com/tech/policy/article/3132091/chinese-tv-maker-skyworth-under-fire-excessive-data-collection-users?utm_content=article&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR31qScHn5ddK5JESrqD-5IlfCmK5n6yCJnqlUdmA2Rysc5uc_dhHypWwtI#Echobox=1620078768 Chinese TV maker Skyworth under fire for excessive data collection that users call spying Skyworth apologised and ended its partnership with an analytics firm after a user found one of its smart TVs was collecting data on all connected devices. Chinese television maker Skyworth has issued an apology after a consumer found that his set was quietly collecting a wide range of private data and sending it to a Beijing-based analytics company without his consent. A network traffic analysis revealed that a Skyworth smart TV scanned for other devices connected to the same local network every 10 minutes and gathered data that included device names, IP addresses, network latency and even the names of other Wi-Fi networks within range, according to a post last week on the Chinese developer forum V2EX. The data was sent to the Beijing-based firm Gozen Data, the forum user said. Gozen is a data analytics company that specialises in targeted advertising on smart TVs, and it calls itself China‘s first “home marketing company empowered by big data centred on family data”.
  14. Met this Deaf and Mute Russian Biker along the walkway around OG (Albert Complex)/Fu Lu Shou/The Bencoolen, saw him asking passerby to read his notes but most people walking there are Chinese and many of them can't read a word of English and so they just walk away. I went over and donated a few $ to his cause and using my phone's Notes function and key in English to him that most of the passerby along there don't really understand English so I will try to translate it into Chinese Characters and pass it to him this weekend. Me 'England' and 'Chinese' also '1/2 pail water' only I used Google to Translate and this is the result: "I want to enter The Guinness book of records as the only deaf and mute individual who has traveled all the former soviet union, europe, africa, australia, asia and the americas on a motocycle. Russia. www.yarets.com" "我想进入吉尼斯世界纪录作为唯一的聋哑个人谁走过所有的前苏联,欧洲,非洲,澳大利亚,亚洲和美洲的摩托车。俄罗斯. www.yarets.com" "Can you help me with some petrol? Thanks you very much for your kind support !!!" "你能帮助我的一些汽油?谢谢你的热心支持!!!"

  18. Chinese win design competition for rebuilding Notre Dame https://www.asiaone.com/world/chinese-win-design-competition-rebuilding-notre-dame Aug 07, 2019 Two Chinese designers, with their work Paris Heart Beat, have won the championship in a design competition for rebuilding Notre Dame Cathedral in France. The competition was launched by GoArchitect, an independent publisher of books based in LA, and it received 226 proposals from 56 countries in all, with over 30,000 people voting during the competition. The two Chinese designers, Cai Zeyu and Li Sibei, both currently work at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Foundation (Chicago, US), and respectively graduated from Tsinghua University and Beijing University of Technology. Three highlights of their design Paris Heart Beat are the Paris Time Capsule, City Kaleidoscope and Mirror Roof. They used magnetic levitation technology to design a time capsule device, which opens every half-century and moves rhythmically up and down, breathing and beating together with the city. This is why the design is called Paris Heart Beat. In addition, people are able to see rose windows inside with the help of the mirror's reflection at the tower, creating a city kaleidoscope. Notre Dame Cathedral has witnessed Paris' history over more than 800 years, and it survived the blaze, Cai and Li said. "Paris Heart Beat carries our expectation of its rebirth." There have been debates on rebuilding Notre Dame Cathedral since the devastating fire tearing through the cathedral in April. Last month, French lawmakers approved a controversial bill to rebuild Notre Dame and French President Emmanuel Macron stated he is not against a "contemporary architectural gesture". Therefore, the original intention of GoArchitect in launching this competition was to call on the French government to be open to any possible proposals, though it is a nongovernmental institution and not officially authorised by any French institutions. Besides Cai and Li's Paris Heart Beat, proposals from five other countries (Canada, Japan, UK and US) made the final round of the competition.

  20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3N8MS8Gffg The terrifying footage shows that a man drove into an Automobile 4S Store in Beijing frantically and smashed around, crushing many equipment in the store on March 11, 2016. The man, surnamed Bai, bought a car in the store in July, 2015, but was unsatisfied with the product as well as the store’s service. He sued the store in February, 2016 after they had a dispute on how much refund should be returned. Eventually, the lawsuit was withdrawn. The salesman said this car attack came “without warning”, and they were “totally unprepared”. However, Bai had another story to tell. He said that his family was threatened as they were asked to drop the lawsuit. “The store threatened to find ten men to do something to my wife!” said Mr. Bai angrily. “I called before I came. I didn’t want to hurt anyone.” He said. The store manager responded to this, saying that “Our salesman does not have any contact information of Mr. Bai’s wife.”
  21. PETALING JAYA: Chinese police have reportedly foiled a plot to assassinate Kim Han Sol, the son of Kim Jong Nam who was murdered in Malaysia earlier this year. Quoting a source familiar with North Korean affairs, South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo said seven agents from the communist state’s spy agency, Reconnaissance General Bureau, had been dispatched to Beijing to track down Han Sol. Of the seven, two were arrested by Chinese police. They are being held at a special facility on the outskirts of Beijing. Investigations are ongoing, the report added. Han Sol, 22, was last heard of in March, when a video surfaced showing a man claiming to be Jong Nam’s son. The video was posted online by a group calling itself Cheollima Civil Defense. The group said it was protecting Jong Nam’s family and had relocated it to safety. “We have in the past addressed other urgent needs for protection. This will be the first and last statement on this particular matter, and the present whereabouts of this family will not be addressed,” it said in a statement on its website. The group also thanked four countries which it said had facilitated the protection given to Jong Nam’s family: China, the Netherlands, the US and a fourth unnamed government.
  22. 'Lucky' stall at Chinatown bazaar goes for $13,899 – highest in six years This is highest in 6 years; stallholders believe the stall is 'lucky' as it is a hotspot for visitors at the Chinatown market A stall at the Chinese New Year festive bazaar in Chinatown next year went for a whopping $13,899 in rental. This is the highest bid in six years. The bid was for the "lucky" stall in the Chinatown Chinese New Year festive street bazaar, which will be held from Jan 18 to Feb 4 next year. Stallholders said the location of the stall at the junction of Smith Street and Trengganu Street is a hotspot for visitors at the market, and thus can bring in the most money. There were three bidders for the "lucky" stall at the 2019 bazaar, and the lowest bid was $2,700. The minimum bid for a stall at the bazaar this year was $1,850. The lucky owner of the stall is Mr Ye Wei Qiang, who has been setting up his stall at the festive bazaar for close to 30 years. He was also the owner of the "lucky" stall this year, which he won with a $8,399 bid. Mr Ye, 55, told The New Paper yesterday: "This year, I decided to up my stakes by $5,500. But I did it without hesitation because I got wind that my competitor had recovered from his sickness and would be bidding this year." He said that he and his rival has been at odds for close to 10 years, and would fight over the "lucky" stall every year. He had lost out to his competitor in the 2017 bazaar. At the bazaar next year, Mr Ye said he will be selling mostly pomelos at his "lucky" stall. His pomelos can range from $6 for a regular pomelo to $12 for a large one. Mr Ye said he will be also renting the stall across the "lucky" stall for about $5,000. This brings the number of stalls he will have at the bazaar to five, managed by him and four other business partners, and bringing his total rental expenditure to at least 20,000. "I rent the space opposite the lucky stall as a backup plan. There were some years I couldn't get the lucky stall, but at least I had the one opposite. "It is very important to get the space near the lucky stall because there is a lot of traffic around that area," he said. Mr Ye will be selling Chinese sausages and other snacks at the opposite stall. Despite the high rent, Mr Ye is confident that he will be able to make a profit. "I make a profit every year, and I have a few other stalls around the bazaar as well. "It is expected that the profit will dip slightly due to the high rent, but we have regular customers, and business is so good at that location. We can sell baskets at one go," he said. Mr Ye added that he sees about $5,000 to $6,000 in profit every year. On regular days, Mr Ye is a durian seller at Katong. The Festive Street Bazaar 2019 is managed by the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 Organising Committee, a sub-committee under the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens' Consultative Committee. There will be 313 stalls filling the streets, selling all sorts of food and decorations for the Chinese New Year celebrations. The market will be open from 6pm to 10.30pm from Jan 18 to Feb 3, and from 6pm to 1am on Feb 4, the eve of Chinese New Year. https://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore/stall-chinatown-bazaar-goes-13899-highest-six-years huat ah !
  23. Chinese New Year is coming. Yu Sheng, or Cantonese as lou hei, is one of the main dishes that most people will get to eat during Chinese New Year. Yusheng, yee sang or yuu sahng (Chinese: 魚生; pinyin: yúshēng), or Prosperity Toss, also known as lo hei (Cantonese for 撈起 or 捞起) is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (sometimes salmon), mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients. Yusheng literally means "raw fish" but since "fish (魚)" is commonly conflated with its homophone "abundance (余)", Yúshēng (魚生) is interpreted as a homophone for Yúshēng (余升) meaning an increase in abundance. Therefore, yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. While versions of it are thought to have existed in China, the contemporary version was created and popularised[citation needed] in the 1960s amongst the ethnic Chinese community and its consumption has been associated with Chinese New Year festivities in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Today, the common form of yusheng is the qicai yusheng (七彩鱼生; “seven-coloured raw fish salad”) served in local restaurants during the Chinese New Year period. Also referred to as facai yusheng (发财鱼生; “prosperity raw fish salad”) or xinnian yusheng (新年鱼生; “Chinese New Year raw fish salad”), this colourful take on yusheng was said to be created in the 1960s by chefs Lau Yoke Pui, Tham Yui Kai, Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai, together known as the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the Singapore restaurant scene. The recipe included ingredients such as shredded white and green radish and carrots, ginger slices, onion slices, crushed peanuts, pomelo, pepper, essence of chicken, oil, salt, vinegar, sugar and more. To enhance the taste, the chefs began the practice of pre-mixing the sauce in order to ensure a balanced taste for each dish as compared to the past when diners mixed the sauce themselves. This new way of eating yusheng was not readily accepted until the 1970s when younger diners embraced it. From then on, the popularity of this yusheng recipe soared and spread overseas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusheng So, any good recommendations for good yu sheng this year? And how often do you eat yu sheng during the 2 weeks of Chinese New Year celebrations?
