  1. F1 teams are close to agreeing upon a new engine formula for the six-year period beginning in 2013. Until then, development of the current 2.4 litre V8s will remain 'frozen', to be replaced thereafter by similarly powerful engines that use less fuel, emit less pollution and are affordable for the small teams. Spain's El Mundo Deportivo newspaper said an in-principle agreement has been reached for a four cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection. The new formula would reportedly also involve KERS. "If F1 has to develop something helpful for real (road) driving conditions, then the best solution is for an engine that is turbocharged and GDI (gasoline direct injection," Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa told Autocar magazine at the Beijing Motor Show. "That is what we would support," he said. Mercedes' Norbert Haug agrees that smaller engines are likely for reasons of consumption and emissions, but warns that high technology needs to remain a crucial focus. "If you fly from Europe to Japan on a 747, you would use more fuel than an entire F1 season. We need to see the whole picture," he insisted.
  2. Just saw the news and post here to let bros know...no toileteries/electronics/medicated items to buy there from today 4pm onwards for 3 days until Sat 8pm...still can patronise other floor levels though...or hop over to nearby City Square. Apr 8, 2010 Mustafa to close 1st storey By Elena Chong IN AN unprecedented move, Mustafa Centre has been ordered to close its first storey for 40 hours from 4pm on Thursday to 8am on Saturday. No retail activity will be allowed on that level but the other floors of the six-storey building at Syed Alwi Road will not be affected. Even the money-changing and food delivery services outside the building can operate as usual. This followed an application by Singapore Civil Defence Force for a prohibition order which was granted by District Judge Imran Abdul Hamid on Thursday. SCDF had pressed for a 72-hour closure order but the court decided on 40 hours instead. SCDF had said that overcrowding was still an issue despite the company having been fined on Jan 19 for two charges of fire safety violations, including overcrowding. It went to court last month to seek the prohibition order as the mall had breached the 431-patron limit for the first storey. Mustafa's lawyer, Mr Mirza Namazie had argued that the order should not be given as it was not fair and right. He said his clients had been more vigilant since last week's hearing and had actually stopped people from entering once the number reached 380.

  4. Malaysia's Proton, Volkswagen close to tie-up: report Posted: 07 June 2007 1626 hrs KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's ailing national carmaker Proton and Germany's Volkswagen AG are close to sealing a tie-up that will likely see the German auto firm take a 51 per cent stake in its key assets, a report said Thursday. Citing unnamed sources, The Edge Financial Daily said a new company would be created which will see Volkswagen, Europe's biggest carmaker, controlling key operations with the 51 per cent stake. Proton Holdings will hold the remaining 49 per cent in the new company, which would encompass key assets including British subsidiary Lotus, as well as manufacturing, research and development, and engineering activities, the report said. A 42.7 per cent stake in Proton Holdings currently held by the government's investment arm, Khazanah Nasional, may also be taken over by state-linked conglomerate Sime Darby, The Edge reported. The newspaper said details were expected to be finalised at a meeting underway in New York between representatives from Volkswagen, Khazanah, Sime Darby and the prime minister's office. With Volkswagen's expertise and platforms, the new company is expected to launch new Proton models under the Malaysian carmaker's brand name while most of the existing ones will be phased out, it said. Proton officials declined to comment on the report while Khazanah executives were not immediately available. Proton's share price was sharply higher Thursday on the news. At the morning close, Proton was up 0.95 ringgit (0.28 cents) or 16.24 per cent at 6.80 ringgit. Malaysia's government has been under intense pressure to announce details of a partnership for Proton in a bid to provide it with expertise to arrest a sharp decline in market share. The company last year lost its status as Malaysia's biggest-selling automaker to rival Perodua, another homegrown manufacturer. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said on May 31 that talks with Volkswagen had failed but the next day a senior government official said negotiations were back on after Volkswagen requested a final round of talks. A senior government official said last month that talks were also continuing with US automaker General Motors Corp. Analysts said a deal with VW would bring no immediate relief for Proton. In a note to clients, Hwang-DBS Vickers Research said a partnership with Volkswagen remains the preferred scenario, but "a gestation period of 18 to 24 months may be necessary in order for operational turnaround to take effect." TA Research said a tie-up with Volkswagen is "a step forward for Proton but it will still have to endure some pain in the short term due to huge inventories and declining sales." Malaysian ministers have acknowledged that Proton needs a foreign manufacturing partner which would bring the necessary expertise to help turn around the company's fortunes. At the same time they have expressed reservations about ceding control of a key national asset, although The Edge Financial Daily said such views were changing in the face of Proton's loss-making performance. Proton last week reported larger than expected net losses of 591.36 million ringgit (US$174 million) for the year to March 2007. The carmaker blamed weak sales and higher production costs for a reversal from the previous year's profit of 46.69 million ringgit. The government has so far missed two self-imposed deadlines to announce a partner for Proton. Previous talks with PSA Peugeot Citroen of France and Mitsubishi of Japan were unsuccessful. Proton's market share has fallen sharply in recent years due to the whittling away of duties that have made imports more affordable, and a persistent reputation for poor quality and unimaginative models. [/color] It seems like Proton had no choice but to give up majority share holder. Hope change name to Volksproton.

  8. This happened about 1/2 an hour ago (7.45 pm) at the junction of SengKang East Way and Compassvale Rd. my wife and i just crossed the junction (on foot) and hear a loud horn follow by screeching sound of the tires. i turn back and saw a black Mit EX braking hard trying to avoid a white sunny who is about to turn right. i dont know who has the right of way as this happened just too fast. Black Ex couldnt stop on time, swing towards the pavement where pedestrian usually stand to wait for the traffic and make a turn back to the rd and drive off. i am really impress by the EX driver reflexes how he avoid the sunny, go up the pavement and back on the rd again without hitting anything!! as i dont know how got the right of way at that moment, i shall not comment whether the Mit or the Sunny is right but just imagine if there was a group of pedestrian waiting at pavement, which is potentially me and my wife, i could not be typing this story now. its 7th month. pleaes drive safely. PS: to the Mit driver (if you do visit this forum), your reflexes is really fast as if you rehearse this many times!! very impressive and this is a compliment from me!!

  10. Nearly got involved in a chain accident along PIE (towards Tuas) between Eunos and Paya Lebar around 4 plus this afternoon. I was on lane 1. Travelling near 100 kph when the cab in front suddenly swerved left to lane 2. Saw car in front of cab jam brake, I followed suit and jam brake and just managed to stop in time. Can hear the ABS working (klak klak klak). A Vios behind me jam brake and swerved into lane 2 and the car behind it (Silver MPV) jam brake too. Saw a blue Comfort bang into rear of MPV - very unnerving sound. Hope everyone ok back there. Moral of the story - Safety distance and stay alert.
  11. When Spore H1N1 Flu Outbreak: 969 total cases. They say WHO: Spread of swine flu is 'unstoppable'... Probably one reason here... why it is speading so fast... In Japan , Taiwan and HK...when people have flu....they are social responsiblle to put on a mask to prevent spreading...(they're very automatic) Over here.... people are not educated to put on mask when they have flu... as and when like to cough and sneeze in the air..... like public places and mrt.... why spreading so far here......what's your view? or our garment not working hard enough? btw..japan... at a start also the number shoot up fast (rate of increase at start)...but seems had contain the situation...
  12. Posting at Lite and EZ would be an understatement. So i wanna share my close encounter on the North South Highway during my return trip this Sunday afternoon. Was driving on the middle lane of the 3 lane highway and following other vehicles at a slow pace (est bet 80/90kmh or lesser) during a heavy downpour at Malacca. The visibility was poor, at most one lamp post. Just then, saw a Hyundai Tucson overtook on my left at a very high speed, within seconds, i notice on the left lane ahead, a pair of headlights, turning in circle! OMG it's the same vehicle that had just overtook me on my left. It was spinning out of control. I pray very hard that it won't spin into my lane. My friend was traveling in another car just behind me. My heart rate jumped, I told my passenger that a car had spanned out of control and to brace for impact. The car did not skid into our lanes, but landed on the ditch next to the left lane. It flip several times before it came turned turtle, immediately white smoke was steaming from the engine bay (most probably is rain water evaporating from the hot engine). The only thing i could do was apply brake to slow down, not jam brake as the road was very wet, doing so could have caused my car to skid. This all happened in split seconds and by that time i had passed by the accident vehicle. Phew, I can't imagine the consequence had the car skidded into our lanes. It would have caused a chain collision and serious injuries to other road users. I immediate warned my friend on the WT, he replied he's OK, He saw the car in the ditch and someone had pulled over to help the victims. At first, i had cold sweat, but later turned to anger. The visibility was poor already due to the heavy down pour, imagine the car going at break neck speed in this condition is akin to driving blind folded. How can someone be so irresponsible to continue to drive a such high speed in bad weather conditions! Please Drive Responsibly

  16. July 22, 2008 Rising cost of living worries US firms based here Cost of housing and inflation key concerns among senior executives By Nicholas Fang SINGAPORE'S rising cost of living continues to be a major concern for American companies doing business here, according to a new survey. The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (AmCham) conducted its Business Outlook Survey for the year last month and it showed that a growing number of US firms are concerned about inflation. Respondents to the survey, which is into its seventh year, comprised AmCham members who are senior executives working with a firm held by, or with, an American interest. According to the survey, which received responses from 130 AmCham members here and 535 throughout the region, 74 per cent of the respondents here said they are dissatisfied with office lease costs. This compares with 45 per cent last year, said AmCham acting executive director Andrew Benbow yesterday. 'Costs of living and housing are major concerns for most respondents in Singapore,' he said at a press conference. 'Not a single respondent expects the cost of living...to decrease this year, whereas 69 per cent expect housing costs to increase while 95 per cent expect the cost of living to increase.' More people expect the world economy to fare worse this year. 22. Many times, I come accross some taxi drivers who would purposely drive so close or on the lane marking that without signal, would just cut into your lane or making you difficult to judge whether he is keeping left or right lane. This is so during traffic jam situation and the taxi was driving on the lane marking and which ever lane is faster, the taxi would just switch into that lane without due care and consideration for the vehicle behind him. One or twice, I would move so close (keeping to my lane) to the taxi and our side mirror almost touch. I would take a look at the taxi driver and he show sulk face and mumbling something. Why can't they keep to the centre of their lane????
  23. Shot this last week end... Either the driver's parking skills is very good or he/she simply "Boh Chap".. The car body is only less than 2mm away from the pillar
