DPM Tharman warns of severe slowdown in global economy By Wayne Chan | Posted: 19 November 2011 1843 hrs SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has warned of a possible severe slowdown in the global economy due to the debt crisis in Europe. He said that this could test the leadership of Singapore's government and union movement. Mr Tharman said: "Unfortunately, troubles are brewing once again, this time in the eurozone... We have to prepare for the possibility, the very real possibility of rough times ahead, a severe slowdown in the global economy. Once again, this will test leadership, leadership not just within government but leadership within the union movement." He was speaking at a graduation ceremony for the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute, where Mr Tharman and Labour Chief Lim Swee Say gave out certificates and diplomas to 99 graduates. Mr Tharman's comments come a day after the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) warned that the global economy is at its most fragile state since the last financial crisis. However, Mr Tharman believes Singapore will be able to use crises to become fitter, more skilled and more ready to take on future opportunities. He said: "That has been the way we have dealt with past crises, not become all defensive, not retreat, but use the crisis as an opportunity to build up skills and build up competitiveness. "And if we go through difficulties once again next year and possibly beyond, we will be able to once again show the world how we use crises to build up our competitiveness and to emerge even stronger, just like we did the last time." Mr Tharman said Singapore's brand of tripartism (where the union works together with the government and companies), has resulted in Singaporean workers today enjoying better working conditions and higher salaries - something not many other countries have been able to achieve. But he added that there is still the ongoing battle to uplift those with low wages who are struggling to survive, and to correct working conditions which are still substandard in pockets of the economy. During the ceremony, Mr Tharman also highlighted graduates who made an effort to upgrade. One of them was 50-year-old Mohd Rasi Taib, president of the National Transport Worker's Union, who did not let age stop him from upgrading his skills. Another is Mr Ramanathan Doraisamy. He was retrenched but picked up leadership skills learnt at the institute and secured a new job as a quality assurance engineer. The graduates included union leaders, as well as industrial relations and human resource practitioners.
  3. The case for war has began.......I still remember the WMD weapon of mass destruction..........same same lobby and evidence is emerging now for Iran!! End of the world= Nuclear War in 21 Dec 2012? UN piles on proof of Iran's N-bomb plans But the international community's options for action are limited NEW YORK: United Nations weapons inspectors have released new evidence that they say makes a credible case that Iran is still trying to build a nuclear bomb, despite repeated denials. 'Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear device,' the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said, in the harshest judgment it has issued in its decade-long struggle to pierce the secrecy surrounding the Iranian programme. The report immediately raised the question of what - if anything - the international community, especially the United States, could do to blunt Iran's pursuit of the bomb, which could touch off a nuclear arms race among rival states and directly threaten Israel. Their options - from increased diplomatic pressure and sanctions to sabotage and military action - are limited. The US clearly hopes the report will bolster international pressure on Iran, and some officials said they were considering additional sanctions and ways to close loopholes in the existing ones. The UN Security Council has passed four sets of damaging sanctions on Iran, but veto-wielding members China and Russia oppose further measures. Israel has talked about military action, with President Shimon Peres recently saying an attack on Iran was becoming 'more and more likely', though it is unclear whether this was just to push the West into adding pressure and sanctions. The IAEA report, released on Tuesday, relies on evidence whose scope and depth are far greater than any the agency has made public before. While it did not give an estimate of how long Iran would take to produce a nuclear weapon, it said Iran had moved far beyond the blackboard to carrying out tests that are 'strong indicators of possible weapon development'. Among them were high explosives testing, detonator development to set off a nuclear charge, computer modelling of a core of a nuclear warhead, and development of a nuclear payload for Iran's Shahab-3 intermediate-range missile - a weapon that can reach Israel. The detailed revelations are a role reversal from 2003, when the US and Britain claimed Iraq was seeking to rekindle its nuclear programme. IAEA warned then that the Bush administration's case was weak and some evidence was forged. This time, it is taking the lead, arguing that years of study had led it to the conclusion that Iran engaged in an active programme to design nuclear warheads, among other technologies. In his report to its board of governors, IAEA director-general Yukiya Amano said the agency had amassed 'over a thousand pages' of documents - presumably leaked out of Iran - showing 'research, development and testing activities' on a range of technologies that would be useful only in designing a nuclear weapon. The agency, he added, had interviewed 'a number of individuals' involved in Iran's activities and had provided information that was 'consistent' with intelligence data provided by other countries. He said the agency had tried to engage Iran in discussions about the information, but 'Iran continued to conceal nuclear activities', including building a secret enrichment facility near Qum. Iran dismissed the report and warned that it would meet any military attack with equal force. Yesterday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated that the country's nuclear programme was exclusively civilian and peaceful in nature, saying: 'We don't need the atomic bomb.' Iranian lawmaker Seyed Hossein Naqavi also warned that a military attack would make a battlefield not of Iran, but 'the entire Europe and the US.' A Foreign Ministry spokesman was later quoted by Alam website as saying that Iran remained ready for 'positive and useful' talks with world powers, but only in a climate of 'respect'. In Washington, a US State Department spokesman said: 'We just received this report. We're going to study it. We are not prepared to speak about any next steps at this point.' Germany rejected military strikes against Iran and urged increased diplomatic and economic pressure, while France supported boosting sanctions, as did Britain. Iran's chief allies, China and Russia, also issued cautious statements calling for diplomacy and dialogue. Both have made clear that they will not vote in the Security Council for any more sanctions - a stand that Moscow stressed yet again yesterday. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Beijing was studying the report, adding that it was opposed to the development of nuclear weapons in any Middle Eastern country. Some analysts said that while the IAEA report is its hardest-hitting to date, it does not contain the 'smoking gun' that proves conclusively that Iran is on the verge of building a bomb. 'This isn't new blockbuster information,' said analyst Peter Crail from the Arms Control Association in the US. 'It is just more detail behind the current assessments, that Iran has been trying to build different aspects of a nuclear weapons programme, but that it hasn't yet made a decision to put all those together and actually pursue a bomb.' 12. Honda Beat Successor in the Works... Roadster Coming in Late 2013 Quote AutoWeek We've heard rumors about a new Honda roadster for a while now. Auto Express is now reporting that Honda is definitely planning a new roadster that will combine the best of Honda's car and motorcycle technologies. The new roadster will be a successor to the Beat roadster from the Nineties. The front-wheel-drive, two seater roadster will be based on the same platform as the CR-Z hybrid, but will have a smaller body. It's expected to take styling cues from the OSM concept car. What will power the new roadster? It's rumored that it will be powered by one of Honda's next-generation 1.3L or 1.5L VTEC engines, but a hybrid version is not planned. The engine is expected to be mated to Honda's first ever dual clutch transmission. The Honda Beat will be released in late 2013 and will be targeted at the Mazda MX-5. Unlike the original Honda Beat, the new one will be sold worldwide. Unquote

  14. Gys BMW hydrogen car coming. Just wonder how CNG and Hydrogen will florish/die in Singapore. Cheers Hydrogen-powered cars to make its way to Singapore By Dominique Loh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 February 2008 1456 hrs Photos 1 of 1 Related Videos Hydrogen-powered cars to make its way to S'pore SINGAPORE: The availability of an environmentally friendly car has just widened. Besides popular choices like hybrid cars or even those running on compressed natural gas, the hydrogen car is another choice. However, it is more than just a case of supply and demand when purchasing these cars. Touted as one of the greenest cars available today is the BMW 7 Series. Its only emission is water, when it is powered by liquefied hydrogen. BMW believes using hydrogen fuel will help save the environment and reduce the dependence on crude oil. This next generation green car can also run on petrol in the same engine as hydrogen fuel is not readily available yet. Running a car using hydrogen, however, will cost more. A kilogramme of liquid hydrogen costs about US$11 or about S$16. Covering 100 kilometres with a hydrogen car will end up costing US$42 or about S$60 for the fuel. If it ran on petrol, it will cost US$27 or about S$38. These figures are based on European petrol and hydrogen fuel prices. The Hydrogen 7 model is likely more expensive than petrol only versions. Roland Krueger, Managing Director of BMW Group Asia, said: "The comparison is not really fair, meaning that today the infrastructure is not as developed as fossil fuel structure. So given that we will have a comparable base with the same kind of infrastructure, then the price of liquid hydrogen will be much more comparable." However, it still boils down to the question of which comes first - building refuelling stations or making more hydrogen cars? Fred Zheng from Hydrogen Solutions said: "The first, I believe is government support, second is establishing infrastructure in place." "The third is - we need to have economies of scale with the production of cars to make the cars cheaper and fourth is - find a way to have R&D and making hydrogen cheaper," he added. In Singapore, this hydrogen push has the support of the National Environment Agency, the Singapore Environment Council and the Urban Redevelopment Authority. It still remains to be seen if this would be enough to generate a nationwide network of refuelling stations. So far BMW has made some 100 hydrogen vehicles, but it will be some years to go before it becomes commercially available. BMW will bring several of its latest hydrogen cars to Singapore in early March for trials. - CNA/vm

  17. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/busines...how/8236343.cms "BANGALORE: Singapore has emerged as one of the world's largest hiring markets this year, and this offers opportunities for Indians. The country expects to hire over 3 lakh mid to senior professionals in 2011. Hiring firms say over 20% of this talent will be from India, 50% from within Singapore and the rest from other parts of the world. Zubin Shroff, partner in executive search firm Braithwaite Steiner Pretty, said Singaporean firms' requirement for talent had multiplied this year, with all markets in the region growing . "This is creating opportunities for many Indian professionals from across industries." Singapore is the regional headquarter for many American and European banks, financial institutions, manufacturing giants, oil & gas companies, large IT corporations , mining firms, healthcare and hospitality brands. These companies are now expanding rapidly in Singapore and across China, Indonesia , Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Australia. Hiring firms say some 40% of the 3 lakh recruits will be placed in Singapore while the rest will go into other Asia Pacific regions. Jayanthi Y, chairman of hiring firm AdAstra Consultants , who is in-charge of talent acquisition for Apac, said, "Singapore today offers a never-before opportunity for Indian talent. Its proximity is an attractive element, while salary is the biggest attraction . Professionals receive 4 to 5 times what they are paid in India." Jobs are available particularly in banking, hospitality , technology, manufacturing , oil & gas, healthcare, mining and textiles. Global executives are attracted to Singapore for its high quality of life, congestion-free traffic movement, its safety standards. For Indians , the three-hour flying time and Singapore's assimilation of Indian culture are added attractions. Most companies operate out of economic zones where the maximum personal income tax is 15%. "My 12-year-old daughter travels 60 kilometres a day between home and her school in an hour. She has to catch a train for half the way and then change to a bus. But it doesn't bother her, nor does it bother my wife, or me. Because , this place is really safe," said Natarajan P, a professional with an MNC oil company who relocated to the country from Bangalore a year ago. Opportunity calling Jobs are available particularly in banking, hospitality, technology, manufacturing, oil & gas, healthcare, mining and textiles Singapore is the regional headquarter for many American and European banks, financial institutions, manufacturing giants, oil & gas companies, large IT corporations , mining firms, healthcare and hospitality brands" No wonder I still couldn't find a proper job.

  19. Hi, I have this problem here. Today i send my car for regular servicing. When my mechanic release the oil cap ( where the engine oil is poured into via that opening ). I can see steam coming out from that opening. My mechanic says that it is due to the heat cannot disperse properly through the engine vent. That why it is giving off steam. The reason is that the outlet has been choked and he say to rectify this, he has to take the engine apart and wash off the (OIL WHICH HAS BEEN TURN SOLID) so that the engine can breath properly. He also say that it a kind of engine overhaul. See what spare parts need to changed, for example : Piston ring ... etc etc ..........He say the total cost will be around $1200 to $1500 (depending on the spare parts he changes. Do you guys recommend to go for a overhaul ( since my car is nearing 10 years ) and COE has been extended for another 10? If you guys recommend , what will be the cost ? AGAR AGAR Which workshop will be a good place to change ?

  23. ...when you see these kinds of articles DBS CEO pay for 2010 just over S$8m By Chris Howells | Posted: 31 March 2011 2202 hrs Photos1 of 1 Piyush Gupta SINGAPORE: The CEO of DBS Group Holdings, Piyush Gupta is taking home a pay packet of just over S$8 million for 2010. The company's CEO earned S$1.2 million in salary, S$2.7 million in cash bonuses and S$4.1 million in deferred shares. DBS also made changes for deferred shares, now to be vested over a four year period, up from three years, and no shares will be paid out in the first year. This policy will also apply to other some other members of the board such as Chairman Peter Seah, who is set to take home a S$678,500 pay packet, a third of which was in deferred shares. DBS also introduced a "claw back" for remuneration, which can be triggered if the bank sees losses from negligent risk taking or inappropriate individual behaviour or fraud. Part of Gupta's deferred shares (S$685,000) are also allocated as "kicker" shares, which can only be vested if he is still with the bank in the fourth year. DBS also said it does not pay dividends on deferred shares. In 2010, DBS has recorded core earnings of S$2.65 billion, up 28 per cent from the previous year. The bank said this was driven by strong growth in loans across the region, higher income from cross-selling activities and an improvement in the quality of assets. This was despite headwinds caused by a low interest rate environment, where SIBOR rates had hit a 23-year low. In a letter to shareholders as part of its annual report, Gupta and Seah said: "The bank was able to put surplus deposits to good use and mitigate the effects of net interest margin compression. In all, net interest income declined just 3 per cent to S$4.32 billion. On the other hand, non-interest income rose 28 per cent to S$2.75 billion." Going forward, the bank reiterated its focus on strengthening its regional wealth management, SME, Treasury & Markets and Global Transaction Services Business. This comes after the CEO of OCBC Group, David Conner, racked up S$7.5 million in pay for last year. Half of which was in deferred shares and share awards of S$3.71 million, while S$1.24 million came from base salary and fees, and S$2.5 million in bonuses. -CNA/ac
