  1. Somehow, NIssan March is the default choice of mine for compact hatch (except the current K13 model, which look kind of ugly). I have high hope for this coming soon soon model. Does it not look like a mini Qashqai from far?
  2. About 2 decades ago, the term bread and butter car model used to be refering to car with engine capacity of 1.0L or lesser, and mid size family sedan are the Corolla, Sunny, Mazda 323, Civic, Jetta and such. Sub 1.0L rides make up some 12 - 15% of our passenger car population, and proved to be popular for those looking at a simple point A to point B personal transport tool. Some of the hot model include: Suzuki Swift Sedan Suzuki Wagon R Toyota Starlet Nissan March Subaru Justy Subaru Vivio Daihatsu Charade Daihatsu Move Mitsubishi Toppo Town Bee Mitsubishi Pajero Mini Fiat Uno Seat Ibiza Sales of sub 1.0L rides start to fall by the end of 90s / early 2000, due to the ever rising COE premium (and no thanks to the merger of Cat 1 & 2 COE into Cat A in May 1999), as well as the better acceptance of Korean model (Accent, Getz, Atos, Rio, etc.). IIRC, the last 1.0L (non-turbo) model sold in Singapore is the Hyundai Atos, which at it lowest price point, can be had for <S$30K. T.B.C.
  3. Went Japan last month and saw this cute bright cute MPV or a so called "compact minivan" TOYOTA SIENTA. Always like the cute small compact cars in Japan when ever im there. Saw so many nice accessories there too. Heard my PI bringing in and price is S$ 10x,xxx Told me better price than a Wish. Like the range of colors they provide.... maybe should check out the Hybrid if he does bring in. http://youtu.be/pZJSrus1ros Nice " fun car" to have for family outings too.
  4. My uncle looking for a compact MPV for his family of 4 and on the rare occasions 6 person. He is currently driving Honda Stream which has been good for him for 10 years but it is due for scrap soon. He is hopping to get something cheaper in the running costs like fuel efficiency, lower road tax and lower depreciation and yet at the same time, something as powerful as his stream, and as reliable as his stream. He is hoping to look for a used one in the market that is about 3-4 years old. currently, i see the Toyota Wish as the best option as it fits almost all his criteria. his priority i guess should be reliability and running cost. his old stream clocked almost 400,000 km mileage due to the nature of his business. i did think of diesel powered MPVs since his mileage is high enough to have decent savings. the problem is that the diesel powered MPVs are continental which usually means higher maintenance costs which again will offset any fuel savings. hope you guys can chip in if there is any other option better than toyota wish.
  5. Hi, anyone knows where can buy a piece of T145/70R18 compact spare tire? Thanks.
  6. Toyota Motor said on Friday it would roll out eight compact car models tailored for emerging markets by 2015 in an attempt to catch up to front-runners such as Volkswagen (VW) and General Motors (GM). Toyota, which lost the crown as the world's top automaker last year, is looking to reduce its dependence on the mature North American, European and Japanese markets. It wants to shift more of its weight to growth markets such as China, India and Brazil, where Volkswagen, GM and Hyundai Motor have taken the lead. The Japanese automaker aims to sell half of its vehicles in emerging markets by 2015, up from around 45 per cent last year and 18.6 per cent in 2000. 'In emerging markets, there are four or five automakers vying to take the lead in sales volumes,' Toyota executive vice-president Yukitoshi Funo told reporters. 'Particularly in the South-east Asian region, Volkswagen and others are looking to challenge our lead so we can't be resting on our laurels,' he said. Including the Etios model that it launched in India in December 2010, Toyota plans to introduce eight compact cars by 2015, targeting combined annual sales of more than one million vehicles in over 100 countries during that period. The upcoming cars will be priced around 1 million yen (S$16,000) or higher and produced in local markets such as India, Brazil and China. Toyota said it would aim to procure 100 per cent of the cars' components locally to lower costs - a move that would require a stronger research and development function in those markets. By 2013, production capacity in emerging markets will rise to 3.1 million vehicles a year, from 2.38 million in 2010, matching the level in Japan, Toyota said. Mr Funo dismissed a report published in Japan's Asahi newspaper on Thursday that Toyota was working on a car priced around 500,000 yen (S$8,000) for the Indian market, to be sold under a new brand from around 2016. 'We won't go to the 500,000 yen segment - it's not our category,' Mr Funo said. 'We want to beef up our presence in segments where we can be competitive. There are many other options for customers looking in that price range, including used cars.' Mr Funo added that the cheaper segments were the territory of subsidiary Daihatsu Motor, which has expertise in smaller, lower-cost vehicles. Carmakers such as Nissan Motor and Hyundai are considering ultra low-cost cars, potentially tapping a huge base of consumers trading up from motorcycles. Toyota's cheapest car is the Etios, which sells for about US$9,000 (S$11,500) in India, or double the price of market leader Maruti Suzuki India's Alto. 7. I feel that compact hatches are the most difficult to rate as more car manufacturers usually got it right! There's no clear cut nicest and ugliest.. Compact hatches throws practicality out of the window to give the car that cutsy and nimble form. Because of it's size it's bound to attract potential female buyers hence most models are painstakingly designed to include some form of curves to it. The more successful model will include a tad of masculine cues to make the car more balanced and unisex, so you won't feel gay driving it.. Pls ranks the below from nicest to ugliest, in your opinion! -Suzuki Swift Sport -Honda Fit RS -Mazda 2 -VW Polo GTi -Alfa Romeo MiTo -Toyota Vitz RS -Kia Picanto -Citroen DS3 -Ford Fiesta -Mini Cooper S
  8. Nowadays, many car brands are bringing in smaller models, ie. Audi A1, Volkswagen Polo GTI etc. More people are turning to compact Continental cars, instead of buying Japanese/Korean family sedans. What do you think are the reasons for the popularity in compact Continental cars?
  9. I had once advised a motorist to replace his punctured front tyre with his rear tyre, and install the compact spare tyre as the rear. He replied me can not be done. Today, I saw a car being driven with the compact tyre as replacement for punctured front tyre. The compact spare tyre bounced and wobbled as the car was driven. After-thought: perhaps these two motorists do not know how to make it safer with the compact tyre Procedure: (I assume you got some means to protect paintwork on the car undercarriage from being scratched and the car located at a safe place) Apply hand brake and chock the wheels Loosen the wheelnuts securing the front and rear wheels Position the jack to lift up both front and rear wheels off the ground together (jack strong enough). Most Japanese cars the jack position is about a metre away from the front wheelhub (when you jack up the car, the front and rear wheels on one side will clear the ground). For other brands, it varies, but a little nearer to the front wheelhub. Remove the rear wheel and replace with the compact tyre, and secured it well Remove the front wheel and replace with the rear wheel, and secure it well Lower the car onto the ground, and ensure all wheelnuts are properly secured. Driving with the compact tyre at the rear, will not affect your steering control as much as if it was installed at the front. In emergency braking with the compact tyre at the front, the car can be expected to veer seriously (perhaps out of control) I hope you can find this information useful, should you encounter such situation Wishing you all happy motoring

Seems like the koreans are very good in car cam. it doesnt have high resolution, nor gps function. also doesnt have a screen. just a simple camera, but surprisingly, the recording is very clear!! 11. I'm considering to upgrade to a MPV (used or new) to cater for increase of family headcount. Looking at a budget compact MPV where 2nd/3rd row space is the key considerable factor. Did a brief survey on some available models in the market and comprehensively tried them out. I'm 1.78m (77kg)and I used myself as a benchmark - if I'm comfortable in the 3rd row seat, then that should be it. How I tested the cars - sat in driver seat and adjust till comfy, then move to seat behind driver and adjust till comfy, then move to last row and see how it feels. Below are the findings on 6 jap MPVs: 1. Old Wish. Pros - widely available in the used market. Can find some good deals for a 2-3yr old one Cons - 3rd row I find rather cramp. Feet cannot tuck in nicely under 2nd row. Feels like squating. - entry to 3rd row is a little tough, as the 2nd row seat cannot collapse forward totally to allow more entry space. Also headroom is limited, so gotta bend down alot to enter. - 3rd row seats easy to fold and with 50:50 split. 2. Stream (current) Pros - Sporty looking. Nicest exterior design of all - 3rd row ok, slightly better than old Wish. - 3rd row seats easy to fold and with 50:50 split. Cons - headroom a little tight - entry to 3rd row same as old wish - Feels like squating in the 3rd row. 3. Sienta Pros - Very spacious in 2nd & 3rd row. - 3rd row is the most comfy. Feet can tuck in nicely under 2nd row. Tall seating, doesn't feel like squating. - Most flexible 3rd row folding. Can even fold to store under 2nd row! Excellent! - entry to 3rd row is a breeze with the tall headroom and 2nd row able to totally collapse forward. - Power sliding door. Cons - Not so nice exterior - Dash layout looks dated - 2nd row floor got a irritating hump in the centre (mechanisim for the 2nd row to move fwd/bkward) 4. Freed (8GL from PI) Pros - Nice compact design but huge in interior space - Superb headroom throughout (best of all the models) - 3rd row is surprisingly comfy. Tall seating, doesn't feel like squating. - 3rd row is quite wide. Can seat 2 adults + 1 small kid. - entry to 3rd row is a breeze with the tall headroom and 2nd row able to totally collapse forward. - Power sliding door. - Full flat floor throughout Cons: - 3rd row folding is the least easy of all 4 models. Fold up and hang. - Cabin a little plasticky 5. Wish (New model) Pros - Feels slightly bigger than the old model - 3rd row more comfy than old Wish and Stream. Feet has abit of room to tuck under 2nd row - Keyless entry and start - 3rd row seats easy to fold and with 50:50 split. Cons - Headroom slightly better though still limited - entry to 3rd row same as old wish 6. Nissan Lafesta (didn't intend to get a 2.0L one but just tried it out for fun) Pros - Good headroom - Panoramic roof is cool! Cabin feels so much brighter - Keyless entry and start - Power sliding door Cons - 3rd row legroom feels like Wish. Very tight - 3rd row folding scores the lowest among the lot. Cannot split 50:50. If want to seat 6 and need some boot space, this one fails. After trying out 6 models in 1 day, I kinda narrow down to Sienta and Freed, given that their 3rd row ease of entry and space top the lot. In addition, their price and small engine capacity (road tax) and FC are good for the wallet in the long run. Sliding door for both is a big plus as well. I'm inclined a bit towards Freed being the fact that its a newer model, looks nicer, has a more modern dash design/layout, and has a much higher OMV ($18-$20k vs Sienta's around $14k). Price between the 2 are small (max $2k?). And the 8GL Freed has the slight advantage of being able to seat 8 (if the occassional need arise). Freed is around $69 - $73k Sienta is $69k Anyone who is in a similar position as me and is considering these models as well? Any comments and feedbacks?

  16. Hi guys, 1. I'm still trying to convince myself to invest in a Big Brake Kit aka BBK. While I don't deny the superiority of a BBK in enhancing stopping distance but the question is just how much it helps in a street car? Don't want to install something that improve slightly, add weight or cause maintenance issue later. Afterall, brake could be a live and death issue, unlike your simple and straight forward air-intake system. 2. Would BBK really make a difference in a small compact car like the Civic SI? Wouldn't the manufacturer had factored it all the necessary variance and equip its stock braking based on the defined specifications i.e 155bhp and top speed of around 210km/h? Is BBK overkill for a car that barely have 160 horses with a 1.32ton body? 3. Please advise me and if you have recommendation on any suitable upgrade please let me know too. Thank you very much. Regards,
  17. like the Corsa OPC or 207GT? check out this R26's little bro... damn, those recaros are good....
  18. I was recently offered by an audio shop to install this very compact sub in my car. Is abt the size of a reem of A4 paper. I was told is active and inside is a 8" sub. The box is rather heavy and the material is Alu. He then said Pionner also have same thing more expensive and the box is made of plastic. I held both. The one by Pionner really like toy is like 1/4 of the weight. So I assume their working principle is the same. But I was told there is no such thing as a "small" sub as sub needs loads of space to generate bass. One will never feel the bass with such a small enclosure as the sub got no air to work with and 8"?? So u guys think this product works? Worth it? Is abt $200 new and installed.

  20. Shopping for a compact hatchback, hence this poll to see what people think. I've listed a quick breakdown of each car here: Honda Jazz - Pros: Fuel economy, many boot configuration options give space, lower road tax from smaller engine. Cons: Small engine down on power, higher insurance. Been in the market fairly long (possibly due to be replaced soon). Mitsubishi Colt - Pros: Price and rebates package, eager MIVEC engine. Cons: Light steering with little feel. Mitsubishi quality (or lack thereof). Just a little younger than Jazz. Suzuki Swift - Pros: Price, and its low and ground hugging stance compared to the rest suggests it might resist body roll better with spirited driving (which I do often). Cons: Resale value, the brand is traditionally viewed as a cheap brand "Soo soo ki" (lose lose go). The previous Suzuki Swift GL was quite thin and rattly, even though this current one is a quantum leap forward, I am unsure of durability. Toyota Yaris - Pros: Most powerful engine of the four, and quoted as quickest to 100kph. Fresh styling and fairly new model, not very common on the roads yet. Cons: Thai-made. Toyota's traditional strength resale value might take a hit due to the car's origin. The Soluna is still a bad memory to some. Similarly to build quality. Centre-mounted dash console not to my taste. Thin profile tires suggest not much grip in corners, and copious amounts of body roll.

  23. Link: http://www.testdriven.co.uk/news.cfm/daiha..._world_premiere A striking new Daihatsu sport utility makes its world debut at 'The 61st Frankfurt Motor Show', combining city car manoeuvrability with all-weather agility and ample five-person interior space. The D-Compact 4x4 is a convincing-looking concept car featuring a roomy and practical four-door body that avoids the bulk, high fuel consumption and negative image of some off-roaders. It will be unveiled at 12.45 pm on Tuesday, 13 September in Hall 6, Stand C11. Considerably wider than the current production Terios 1.3 sport utility, the D-Compact 4x4 features a new high-torque 105 PS 1.5 litre DOHC 16-valve petrol engine derived from that fitted to the new Sirion. Its full-time four-wheel drive system includes a mechanical centre differential lock and Vehicle Stability Control. The body includes state-of-the-art technologies safeguarding both occupants and pedestrians. Following Daihatsu's own tests, the D-Compact matched a Euro NCAP three-star rating. Compared to the Terios, the D-Compact 4x4 measures 4,075 mm long (3,845 mm) with a width of 1,745 mm (1,555 mm) and height of 1,760 mm (1,695 mm), while its wheelbase is 2,580 mm (2,420 mm). Further illustrating its squat and stable stance, the front and rear tracks are 1,445 mm and 1,480 mm respectively compared to the Terios Tracker's 1,315 mm and 1,310 mm.
