  2. [extract] Sometimes, a product is so good that it is destined to make it to production. An example is Bengawan Solo cake shop, which started off in a little home kitchen in a HDB flat and the pastries are now mass produced in a factory at Woodlands. Coming back to the world of automobile, the Lexus LF-LC concept, like Bengawan Solo pastries, might eventually make it to a production line. This is due to the overwhelming popularity that the dramatic concept received. It was honored with the
  3. I attended Proton's Power of 1 event at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur recently. The event is a showcase of Proton's current and future automotive efforts. Proton has decided to show off its latest prototype car one month before its offcial launch but in a disguised form. This is even though it is already production ready. This latest model, code named P3-21A is set to be the replacement of the Proton Persona and to an extent, the hatchback version which is the Proton Gen 2 (although no news of a hatchback variant as yet). In terms of size, it is similar to the Persona but it is slightly taller with a more rounded roof. And even though it has all those swirly stickers pasted on it one can tell that it is a little bit larger than the outgoing model. Proton pitted this new prototype around its demonstration track against the Proton Persona. The Proton P3-21A (P321A) out-braked the Persona due to it having Electronic Brake Distribution and out-accelerated the Persona due to it having Proton's latest turbocharged 1.6liter engine (which will be used for the higher specced variants) that we've seen inside the Proton Exora Bold MPV. It also outperformed the Persona during the slalom course. Some could say that this was all a show put up by the Malaysian manufacturer, but in this case it was simple to see otherwise as the driver in the P321A was easily the more relaxed driver. The Persona driver looked like he had to work harder to keep up with the newer car. The P321A is Proton's latest totally
  4. [extract] Bentley has decided to try jump onto the SUV bandwagon with the Bentley EXP 9 F Concept. The SUV concept vehicle was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and boasts a 6.0liter W12 engine coupled with Bentley's all-wheel drivetrain, a 300km/h top speed and an estimated
  5. [extract] The Volkswagen Up! was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year and Volkswagen came up with several concepts for it before the official introduction. At this year
  6. [extract] I usually don't bother looking through VW Media Services' emails that appear in my mailbox simply because VW Media comes out with a bazillion news and press releases every other day. It goes to show the strength of the company and the products that it churns out. But this time I got a little curious about its latest press release
  7. [extract] There are rumors that Citroen is preparing a model to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R and Renaultsport M
  8. A homeage to the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52 Disco Volante is something that was bound to happen and it has. Touring Superleggera, the Milan based Carrozzeria has come up with a new Disco Volante that will be debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This new 'Flying Saucer', which is what Disco Volante means in normal not very romantic sounding English is a front engined rear wheel drive sports coupe based on Alfa Romeo's limited run 8C Competizione coupe. It will be produced in limited numbers as if anyone wants one, he or she will have to sacrifice an already rare Alfa Romeo 8C coupe for it. Sometimes I really wonder whether it is actually worthwhile to sacrifice an already rare car to make another. I suppose it would be alright if the car became even more beautiful to look at. A good example would be the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina. The car was based on the already visually stunning and rare Enzo Ferrari but it was turned into something even more gorgeous. The original Alfa Romeo Disco Volante was one of three Flying Saucer concept cars originally made by Touring in the 1950s. They were also known as the Alfa Romeo C52 and were based on the pretty normal Alfa Romeo 1900 but it had a tubular space frame chassis instead of the usual monocoque chassic. The engine was a slightly tuned Alfa Romeo 1900 engine (1997cc) that produced 158bhp. The car for its time was very streamlined and was one of the few that was actually windtunnel tested. This allowed the original Disco Volante a top speed of 220km/h. Pretty fast for the 1950s. It was pretty good looking for its time and some contend that it was the basis for the Jaguar E-type. So anyway, this new Alfa Romeo Disco Volante will be an acquired taste. It looks pretty awesome when viewed on its own and as a homage to the original but it does not have the overall cohesiveness of the donor car especially when viewed from the side. It falls slightly flat from certain views compared to the 8C which looks ridiculously beautiful in almost every angle. I suppose a ridiculously wealthy collector could just buy two used units, keep one standard and convert the other into the new Disco Volante. But do note that there are only 500 or so units of the 8C and I do believe that it is the most beautiful looking Alfa Romeo in recent times. So if I had the money would I chop up an original 8C for something a little more visually challenged? I wouldn't.
  9. [extract] The BMW F20 1 Series was introduced in 2011 and it is a relatively new model. It comes in a variety of petrol and diesel engines but there is no performance sub-model available yet. And now, we do not have to wait any longer for one because the German automaker has released official pictures of the M135i concept which will premier at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month. The M135i is a concept study of a BMW M Performance automobile which will feature a six cylinder petrol engine and BMW has stated that the car is consistent with the further development of the new BMW 1 Series
  10. The Geneva Motor Show is usually never complete without concept cars. And I must add that any motor show without concept cars on display is quite lame. When it comes to the Geneva Motor Show it is never lame as it is one of the best places to view concept cars as most European manufacturers usually go full force over there. Furthermore, this is also a place where we get to see an Italian Carrozzeria or three showing off their latest concept cars. We have Pininfarina previewing their Cambiano concept (above) and we have Bertone showing of the Nuccio (below). Both Pininfarina and Bertone are two companies responsible for coming out with the design of classics like the Ferrari 365GTB Daytona and the Lamborghini Miura respectively as well as a plethora of supercars, family cars and unique, one of a kind cars for individual customers. But this time I have to say that both have come up with duds this time around. The Pininfarina Cambiano concept is supposedly to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its styling center and the 10th year anniversary of the engineering center. It is an engineering powerhouse in that it showcases the use of electric motors
  11. Peugeot has released the full details of its brand new 208 GTI concept ahead of its official unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show come 6th March. The concept will be very close to the production model that will follow in less than a year's time. The power source of the concept is the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine inherited from the RCZ THP 200. It churns out 197 bhp with 275 Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The century sprint is estimated to be completed under 7 seconds. To distinguish itself from its lesser brethren, the exterior gets a new body kit, larger 5-spoke alloy rims, brushed aluminium GTi Concept logo on the grille and quarter panels, which is a nice design element that I hope to see in the production model. However, the overall design still lacks the aggression that is expected of a car sporting a
  12. [extract] A few of my friends recently test drove the 2012 Range Rover Evoque and most of them basically decided that those that decided to save SG$20,000 or thereabouts for the BMW X3 or the Audi Q5 must have been either mad or simply too 'poor' to afford that extra amount asked by Range Rover for the Evoque. The car is totally 'worth' the SG$260,000 in terms of looks and its interior appointments. It looks stunning in the flesh and is one of those cars that one yearn to own. If one could afford it of course. Anyway, what owners of Range Rover, Land Rover has done is come up with another stunning Evoque, in a chunky Tonka toy sort of way
  13. [extract] With the recent release of the Peugeot 208 hatchback and the conceptual 208 GTi, it is clear that Peugeot is gearing up for a busy outing at next month
  14. [extract] Mazda has recently announced that the Takeri Concept will be officially presented to the European audience at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The concept made its world debut back in December 2011 at the 42nd edition of the Tokyo Motor Show. Together with the announcement, Mazda has also released a new batch of photos of the concept sedan in daylight settings, giving potential customers a perspective of the car on the road rather than under the spotlights in a motor show. The Takeri Concept exploits Mazda
  15. [extract] Kia has finally released the official renderings of the all-new Kia K9, which is a replacement for the Opirus in South Korea as Kia's top model. The new rear-wheel-drive sedan is based on the platform of sister company
  16. [extract] The Jaguar C-X75 made its debut as a plug-in hybrid two-seater back in the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The exotic concept is powered by four electric motors. The batteries driving these motors are recharged using two diesel-fed micro gas turbines instead of a conventional four-stroke engine. If you think that such a drivetrain can only be found in a concept car or science fiction book, then you are very wrong. Jaguar
  17. Just one year ago, Volkswagen introduced the Mk6 Golf Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show. And this year at the same auto show, Volkswagen is bringing a production ready Mk6 Golf Cabriolet GTI. The car will be the last Mk6 Golf sub-model before the German automaker unveils the next-generation Golf some time at the end of this year. Volkswagen first showed a concept version of the car in the middle of last year during the 2011 Worthersee Tour. Many felt that it was not surprising for Volkswagen to introduce a GTI version for the car as they have done that before in the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet. The car might retain some of the concept
  18. [extract] Honda revealed its 2012 Geneva Motor Show line-up with 2 sports car concepts, a prototype of the European CR-V as well as the debut of the all-new 1.6 Diesel engine all appearing on the Honda stand. The stunning Honda NSX Concept will make its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Highlighting the design and technology direction for Honda's next generation supercar, the NSX Concept features a V6 mid-mounted engine and will employ a range of new technologies including the innovative Sport Hybrid SH-AWD
  19. The latest news is that BMW Mini has decided that is will stop development of the properly small Mini Rocketman. This car was previewed as a concept car at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and I was genuinely excited that there was going to be a proper Mini instead of those ultra large Minis that we have right now. How unfortunate that this will now not be a reality. It seems that the Mini Rocketman concept will not be further developed as the car's really short wheelbase and overall length (304mm shorter than a regular BMW Mini) has created handling, stability and crash protection issues. If Mini were to modify the basic design it would have to spend more money. This isn't the case with BMW who are actually owned by spoilsports. The reason I say this is that this BMW who owns the Mini brand these days is a profit driven enterprise and the proof of this is the statement made by Albert Biermann, BMW M
  20. At the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota Motor Corporation is displaying a total of 15 vehicles and one of them is the GRMN iQ Supercharger Concept. Toyota has surprised everyone there with the announcement of the production of the abovementioned concept car. The iQ Supercharger was first showcased at the same show in 2011. Toyota jointly developed the car with Gazoo Racing and will feature a force induced 1.3 litre engine. Toyota hopes to spark an interest among people who enjoy owning, driving and discussing automobiles developed through GAZOO Racing activities. A second generation of GRMN
  21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Jvnu2eY5M Honda has unveiled the much anticipated NSX Concept at the Detroit Auto Show. The first generation was in production from 1990 till 2005. The Japanese automaker had shown several NSX concept models over the years but none of them make it to production so far. However, this NSX concept is the real deal with the production model to debut within the next three years. It will be manufactured in Ohio at a facility to be named later on. Like the original NSX from the early 1990s, the next-generation supercar will have a mid-mounted V6 engine and will make use of lightweight materials. The V6 VTEC engine benefits from direct-injection technology and is linked to a dual clutch transmission with a built-in electric motor. In addition, it will also feature Honda's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system that utilizes two electric motors that can instantly send negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering for improved handling and efficiency. Honda did not reveal any performance specifications but is rumored to pump out 400bhp with a century sprint timing of less than 5 seconds. President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd, who led the development of Honda's first NSX supercar, shared the values of the new NSX, "Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency. In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."
