Apr 18, 2011 SAF captain charged with 5 counts of corruption By Elena Chong AN ARMY captain was charged on Monday with five counts of corruption in the form of cash loans totalling $53,100 from a businessman. Phua Poh Sim, 31, is accused of corruptly receiving between $1,700 and $28,000 from Yow Wah alias Richard between May and August 2008 in return for providing confidential information relating to military projects in the Singapore Armed Forces. Yow, 58, was charged in the same court with bribing him at his Brighton Avenue home in Serangoon Gardens. Phua and Yow were represented by Ms Gloria James and Mr S. S. Dhillon respectively. A pre-trial conference has been set for July 9. If convicted, each of them faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years per charge.
  4. SINGAPORE - An employee of a vehicle inspection centre was charged on Friday with 30 counts of corruption and related offences. Md Daud Nadzim, 45, who was a principal vehicle inspector with STA Inspection, allegedly accepted bribes - amounting to $1,675 - in exchange for conducting less stringent checks on 35 vehicles with illegal modifications. He allegedly committed the offences between October 2009 and March last year. The accused allegedly took the bribes from 10 motor vehicle workshops, including Cheng Auto Enterprise, Aspec Carcare Centre and CL Garage. A statement from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said the other parties allegedly involved in the case will be charged in court at a later stage. The court heard that Md Daud intends to plead guilty to the charges. If convicted of corruption, for each charge, he can be jailed up to five years, fined a maximum of $100,000 or both. Daimler, the German giant behind the Mercedes-Benz automotive and truck business, has pleaded guilty to corruption charges brought by the U.S. Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and agreed to pay $185 million in penalties for its bribery practices.
