  2. BUCHAREST - A Romanian court jailed for 29 days Saturday a diplomat allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash in Singapore in December that killed a Malaysian, media reported. Silviu Ionescu, a former charge d'affaires in Singapore, was detained for questioning on Friday and the court later ordered him to be arrested for 29 days pending his trial. Ionescu's lawyer filed an appeal to the court's decision, news agency Mediafax reported. Ionescu is alleged to have hit three pedestrians in two incidents in December while driving a car belonging to the Romanian mission. One of the victims, a 30-year-old Malaysian national, suffered brain damage and died on Christmas Day, while the two others suffered injuries. The diplomat, who flew back to Romania days after the accident, 'has tried to influence witnesses' depositions and asked an employee to ... erase data in his computer,' prosecutors said. Ionescu has publicly denied he was the driver, claiming the car was stolen. In interviews to Romanian media, he alleged he was 'a victim of a conspiracy by Singapore authorities.' Last month Singapore issued an arrest warrant after a coroner's court ruled that Ionescu was driving the car involved in the accident. Singapore's foreign ministry said the Romanian government had the moral obligation to persuade Ionescu to return to face the charges. There is no extradition treaty between the two countries. 'The Romanian government must in its own interests ensure that justice was served and seen to be served,' a spokesman said in a statement. 'Otherwise, there would inevitably be consequences for bilateral relations.' Source : Asiaone
  3. I am terribly dissapointed with Toyota these days. They used to be making high performance cars like Supra, Celica, MR2/MRS etc.......But now, they all dissapear from the market and all we get are family Sedans.. Even their high performance engines of those days like 2JZGTE, 3SGE, 4AGE etc have dissapeared as well. Instead, they use engines from Subaru now (FT86.....)... Sigh..... very sad to see this....

  9. The days of Flavio Briatore and Renault boss are coming to an end. According to the commentator of motor racing for SporTV, Lito Cavalcanti, Briatore will be fired by the French squad before next Monday for ordering the crash of Nelson Piquet in the Grand Prix in Singapore last year, an act that benefited the Spaniard Fernando Alonso, another driver of the team. No later than Monday, Flavio Briatore should be fired by Renault. Of course, he will receive a note thanking him for good and loyal service. This will avoid the humiliation of being banned from the circus of Formula 1. But the fact is that there is no more doubt that he'll be out of Formula 1 in 2010 - said Lito Cavalcanti. According to the commentator, after the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has offered to award immunity to the whistleblower Nelsinho Piquet and Renault's technical director, Pat Symonds, Briatore was left alone in the middle of the crossfire. The fact is that Briatore is now the only person who is still subject to punishment if Pat Symonds should accept the whistleblower award that is being offered. In fact, he hinted in his testimony that at times he had more to tell than he was being asked but just would not say anything at that moment - the commentator concluded. The leading contender to replace Flavio Briatore is the Frenchman Alain Prost, world champion in Formula 1. Prost's name has been mentioned in several quarters as Briatore's potential successor at Renault, but quite where this leaves Flavio's position at Queens Park Rangers remains to be seen.

  12. Every few months or so, i have this feeling. There you are on the road, minding your own business, alert of cars around you and the surroundings. Not speeding and also not road hogging. But other cars just like to drift into your lane, or coming close to a side swipe situation I just had it last Fri and is still happening. Car banged into back of my car during morning heavy traffic, driving a rental car now, but yesterday evening a Odyssey nearly missed my back again but that's after a bendy bus drifted very near my side. already went to temple to ask guanyin niang niang to protect me.
  13. Hi guys, just a quick question. I cant seem to find it online. Anyone knows what are the days that do not have newspapers? e.g. day after Chinese New Year. Thanks
  14. Just got back from driving amidst the heavy downpour and saw one accident... Part ranting and part sharing my views. The number 1 reason for having more accidents on the road during rainy days is... 1) Having crappy tires... It never ceased to amaze me why people are still underestimating the need to have good tires... the only contact points you have between your $30k to $100k car and the road, yet a lot of people look for "cheap and good" tires or quiet tires, thinking that they don't speed or race hence comfort is more important or price is more important. Only some ask for good dry and wet grip as first priority. Having a performance or UP tires does not mean you are a racer or likes to speed... it just means you have a good head and knows what is important. Travelling at 40kph with crap tires is still asking for it. In my book, there is no such thing as "cheap and good" tires... It may be cheap and good up to 1000km, 5000km, etc., but never the life of driving it. Another aspect of tires is trying to see how long they can last? Seriously folks... you should change every 20,000km or so. The idea is not to stretch you dollars, but to stretch your lives. How many times do people say they want to modify their cars to go faster vs. to stop better or have better grip? The number 2 reason is... 2) The Keep Left Unless Overtaking sign is not in neon... but then again, most people do not understand English anyway. The scenario... car driving at 90 on Lane 1... sudden downpour... because it is raining and driver learn from his/her driving theory/crap instructors/crap driver friends to drive carefully when the road is wet, he/she continues on Lane 1 but dropped to 60 or 70kph... since he/she is within speed limit he/she continues on Lane 1 (another other excuse is that Lane 2 also crowded)... car behind with the crappy tires didn't realise till too late (oblivious? tires too quiet?)... accident... If you want to drop to 60 or 70kph when it rains, signal and join the queue in Lane 2! The 3 most common reason is... 3) Cab drivers with crappy tires and dropping to 60 on Lane 1.
  15. MORE free time did not result in more babies, so people should go back to work on Saturdays. Nominated MP Loo Choon Yong on Tuesday threw up the most provocative suggestion during the Budget debate when he questioned the benefits of the five-day work week. [It seems to me, of late, some of this so called elite .....stiring or creating news in the media..e.g like the civil servant guy who voice out how much he spent just to learn to cook.... And this NMP, IMO he should not have even mentioned it in the 1st place, what is your comments

  17. http://business.asiaone.com/Business/News/...205-119480.html NMP questions benefits of 5-day work week Thu, Feb 05, 2009 The Straits Times MORE free time did not result in more babies, so people should go back to work on Saturdays. Yesterday, Nominated MP Loo Choon Yong threw up the most provocative suggestion so far when he questioned the benefits of the five-day work week. Speaking on the second day of the debate on the Budget Statement, he said the move by the public and private sectors in 2004 could have eroded Singaporeans' work ethic, while not improving the fertility rate in any meaningful way. Anyway, interesting to find out that some of these budding companies give out "director" pay package, where by your income is basically director fees and you get zero CPF. Any of you here are taking home this sorta of pay package? Do you make montly CPF contribution voluntarily? Regards,
