TP involved in fatal accident at Hougang with 58 year old man

What happened? An accident took place on 21 June 2023 at the junction of Hougang Avenue 3 and Kim Chuan Road, where a traffic police motorcycle hit a 58 year old man, resulting in his death. The police were alerted to the accident around 5.30 pm, and the two ambulances were dispatched to take 2 people to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The victim was unconscious, and died in hospital, whilst the 31 year old officer was conscious on the way. These are the only pictures available of the scene, and no information as to what led to the accident. Online chatter Some speculate as to what happened, as there is apparently an overhead bridge nearby. Authorities said they received a call for assistance at about 6.30pm. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) also said it received a call for a water rescue at 21 Esplanade Drive at about the same time. "Upon SCDF's arrival, a body was seen floating in the water," it said. "SCDF rescuers retrieved the body from the surface of the water. "The person was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic." Police added that it does not suspect foul play based on preliminary investigations.- 13 replies

There is no central databases that track outcomes of surgery performed in Singapore by various doctors. I think patients should be followed up by an independent body and outcomes measured and stored for people to review. Do the public health service do that for doctors performance review? I wonder how do doctors in public hospitals get reviewed every year.

A cleaner startled by the sight sought help from taxi drivers who were taking a break at a bus terminal in Kuantan, Malaysia, on Monday (Sept 23). At first, they thought a sanitary pad had caused the toilet to clog up, but they found an umbilical cord when they took a closer look. After fishing out the cord with a wire, the toilet was still choked. That was when they realised there was a baby inside and immediately called the police, Bernama reported. The police found the body of a premature, fully-formed baby in the toilet, which had been closed for upgrading works since Sept 19. CCTV footage revealed that a woman clad in black had entered the female restroom at 6am that day with a luggage bag in tow. Half an hour later, she was seen exiting the toilet wearing a baju kurung. Kuantan police said they are tracking down the woman who is believed to have abandoned the baby at the bus terminal, and appealed to the public for information on her whereabouts. A post-mortem is being carried out on the infant's remains at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. The case has been classified as concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body, which carries the penalty of a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both. According to statistics released by Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Ministry last year, over 900 newborn babies were dumped between 2010 and 2018. Dead Christmas Trees To Be Used In The Making Of Engine Oil? “Motor” oil is the lifeblood of any car – unless you drive one of those battery-powered slugs. The lubricating fluid has typically been made from crude oil found underground, or a man-made mixture that creates a synthetic oil. Now, your dead or dying Christmas tree might be the way of the future to create your next oil change. A company called Nexcel has developed a motor oil made entirely from waste, which includes chewing gum and Christmas trees. A myriad of waste items have been recycled in the lab to yield properties required for crucial chemical additives. If Castrol wants our old Christmas trees, will the company be paying a “core charge”? If so, we will need to pay an environmental deposit when we purchase a tree? Castrol innovation business, Nexcel, has produced automotive-grade engine oil using nothing but waste products. Chewing gum, used fryer oil, batteries, bathroom sealant, and even a Christmas tree have been recycled and have yielded vital properties for the ambitious program, which demonstrates the significant potential of re-refined oil. “The project showcases the sustainability potential of waste” says John Ward-Zinski, Nexcel’s sustainability director. “This was a hugely demanding project, completed over the last year. It’s one which we hope will open the public’s eyes as to the importance of recycling and sustainability. Few people would think that discarded Christmas trees and old chewing gum could have a commercial or environmental value, but our engine oil shows this is the case.” According to the press release we received, Nexcel’s ambitious project has been inspired by the company’s innovative sealed-oil cell, which provides vehicle manufacturers with efficiency benefits and promotes used oil collection and re-refinement. “Our system has already been utilized by our technical partner, Aston Martin, for use in the visceral Vantage AMR Pro at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. At that event, the car became the first to tackle the legendary hill climb using re-refined oils,” continues Ward-Zinski. “In 2016, Nexcel and Aston Martin also achieved a podium finish in the competitive VLN Championship at the most arduous racetrack in the world: the Nürburgring. Sustainability, and therefore re-refinement, are of growing global significance; hopefully this project helps demonstrate the extent of what is possible.” Hopefully, the price of an oil change will decrease after Christmas because of a dead tree surplus. The most significant challenges of the project included the yielding of phenols and catechols from the waste to be used as antioxidants, forming the basis of the chemical additives required. Nexcel’s experts worked with a zero-waste goal, and after significant research, analysis of component properties and trial and error, the blend consisted of 180 chewing gum pieces, 500ml of used fryer oil, one gallon of RTV silicone sealant, 14 household batteries, 1-liter of used engine oil, and an old Christmas tree. Extraction of components from these waste items enabled Nexcel scientists to produce 1-liter of automotive engine oil. Finally, a good use for this stuff. “Re-refinement of used oil can create a high-quality product when blended with new additives, but bulk feedstocks made up of many different types of used oils can complicate the process and reduce the yield. Nexcel’s oil-management system avoids this by segregating used engine oil, keeping it in the cell during collection,” says Ward-Zinski. “For this particular project, we wanted to make the oil from waste materials, and the challenge lay in the creation of the chemical additives. However, with creative utilization of modern technology there is huge potential in recycling. TAIPEI: At least 17 people were dead and 126 others injured after a train derailed on Taiwan's east coast on Sunday afternoon (Oct 21), authorities said. The train, Puyuma Express 6432, was travelling from Taitung and derailed near Yilan county near the coast, on a railway popular among tourists. "As of 6.30pm there are 17 dead on site and 126 people injured," the Taiwan Railways Administration said in a statement, adding that the train had been moving between two stations in Yilan County before the derailment occurred. Taiwan's central government said that rescue services were at the scene and that the premier had been notified and was highly concerned over the safety of the travelers. At least six compartments of the train overturned, said Taiwan Railways Administration, according to Apple Daily. Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that more than 30 people were still trapped in the train early on Sunday evening. I have Dreamland on CD in my collection. The strange thing is that I was reminiscing about his music a day or two ago, searching and listening to my favourites from the album. Rather coincidental. So, here they are: Even though "Children" (I've got two versions above) was his major breakthrough hit, my personal favourites are probably "One and One" (a poppy duet, for its soppy warmth) and "Landscape" (a pure instrumental that stands almost diametrically opposed, very cold and majestic - probably the coldest piece of music he's done). Anyway, RIP Robert.

"At around 11.10am today, there was an accident involving two SMRT maintenance staff along the track at a servicing point near Pasir Ris station," said Mr Patrick Nathan, Vice-President, Corporate Information and Communications, SMRT Corp. "SCDF was immediately activated and they have confirmed that the two SMRT staff have passed away. We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time," added Mr Nathan. "We are working with the Police to conduct a detailed investigation into this accident." The brother of a signals officer who witnessed the accident told Channel NewsAsia that the signals officer was "traumatised". Pasir Ris resident Francis Dorairaj, who was at the scene, expressed shock and disbelief. "Why were maintenance people on the track when the train was operating?" he questioned. TRAIN SERVICES DISRUPTED Train services along the East-West Line were also disrupted. SMRT announced at 11.20am on Twitter that there would be no train services between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris in both directions until about 12.15pm. This disruption was later extended till 12.45pm, but by 1.35pm, service had not yet resumed.
