  3. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/robert-miles-dead-composer-children_uk_5912dcc0e4b050bdca60de9b Sad news. I loved that album even though I am pretty much a metalhead. I have Dreamland on CD in my collection. The strange thing is that I was reminiscing about his music a day or two ago, searching and listening to my favourites from the album. Rather coincidental. So, here they are: Even though "Children" (I've got two versions above) was his major breakthrough hit, my personal favourites are probably "One and One" (a poppy duet, for its soppy warmth) and "Landscape" (a pure instrumental that stands almost diametrically opposed, very cold and majestic - probably the coldest piece of music he's done). Anyway, RIP Robert.

  11. Egypt's Prime Minister says a Russian civilian plane has crashed in central Sinai. The Airbus A-321 was carrying 224 passengers and crew. Confusion remains over where contact was lost with the plane, which was traveling from Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheik to St Petersburg in Russia. AFP reported that it went missing over Sinai, while other sources suggested contact was lost in Cypriot airspace. The plane was carrying 217 passengers - 17 of them children - and seven crew, according to RIA news agency. The jetliner was operated by Russian carrier Kogalymavia - which also trades by the names Kolavia and Metrojet - and most of the passengers were believed to be Russian tourists. The office of Egyptian Prime Minister Ismail Sharif confirmed the crash on Saturday. A cabinet level crisis committee has been formed to deal with the tragedy. Within a few minutes of the announcement of the crash, Egyptian research teams found debris belonging to the plane near al-Arish airport in the Sinai Peninsula, reported the dpa news agency, citing an Egyptian aviation official. Egyptian security sources told Reuters there were no early indications that the plane had been shot down. The news agency quoted a security officer at the scene saying that the plane was completely destroyed. RIP. Wreckage of Russian passenger plane found in Sinai: Egypt govt The wreckage of a Russian passenger plane carrying 224 people on board was spotted in a mountainous area in the Sinai Peninsula. "Military planes have discovered the wreckage of the plane ... in a mountainous area, and 45 ambulances have been directed to the site to evacuate dead and wounded," a cabinet statement said. The Prime Minister's Office said Prime Minister Sherif Ismail had formed a cabinet level crisis committee to deal with the crash. The passenger jet was travelling from the Egyptian resort Sharm el-Sheikh to the Russian city of St Petersburg when it disappeared from radar screens in Cypriot airspace, Russia's RIA news agency reported, citing a Russian aviation authority source. The source said the aircraft was an Airbus A-321 jet operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia. A senior aviation official said the plane was a charter flight carrying 200 adult passengers, 17 children and seven crew members. Communication with the aircraft was lost, he added. Sergei Lzvolsky, an official with the Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsia told Interfax news agency that the plane had departed Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh at 5:51am local time (11:51am Singapore Time). He said the aircraft did not make contact as expected with air traffic controllers in Cyprus, and "since then the plane has not made contact and has not appeared on radars". Flight #7K9268 was descending at about 6,000 feet per minute just before signal was lost, according to Flightradar24.com. The Egyptian premier's office said the Prime Minister is expected to meet ministries and authorities to follow up on the Russian plane crash.

The two dead victims were the wife of the house owner, who is a businessman, and a middle-aged Caucasian man, who was a business partner with the latter. Five others, including two men, two women and a child were sent to hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire was believed to have been caused by a short circuit, which led to an electrical appliance in the house catching fire. At the time of the fire, there were six people on the second storey of the house, including two children, aged 10 and 8. The house owner, his son, daughter-in-law and an older grandson managed to escape the fire. His younger grandson, who was with a maid at the back of the house, was saved when she jumped through a window to escape. The house owner's wife was found in a toilet on the second floor, while the male victim was found on the second floor. Two other occupants, the house owner's 80-year-old father and another maid, were on the first floor at the time of the fire. They managed to get out with help from firemen. National water agency PUB told The Straits Times that it had found low levels of dissolved oxygen in the reservoir water, which likely led to the deaths. "This could be caused by a combination of factors such as dry weather, algae growth and decomposing organic matter taking up the dissolved oxygen," said a spokesman. Tests on water samples showed the reservoir's water quality was not affected, but PUB said it would monitor the situation. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/environment/story/hundreds-dead-fish-removed-pandan-reservoir-water-quality-unaffecte#sthash.9bkzNII3.dpuf

  23. SEOUL: South Korea's military on Sunday pursued a massive manhunt near the tense border with North Korea for a soldier who shot dead five comrades in a rare shooting incident. The army sergeant, surnamed Lim, opened fire on other soldiers at a guard post on the eastern section of the heavily guarded inter-Korea border Saturday night. The shooting spree left five dead and seven injured -- all members of Lim's own unit at the 22nd infantry division in the western province of Gangwon. He ran off with a K2 assault rifle and a stash of ammunition, a military spokesman said. Another official told AFP that Lim was due to be discharged in the next few months after completing his compulsory military service. The army issued its highest state of alert in nearby areas and launched a huge search involving thousands of soldiers and police, who set up roadblocks and inspected vehicles. "A manhunt is underway to find him as early as possible and to prevent another incident from taking place," defense ministry spokesman Kim Min-Seok told reporters. The army has formed a special team to investigate the incident, he said, adding that the wounded soldiers are in a stable condition. "We have deployed as many troops as possible to the search operations and to block possible escape routes," Colonel Roh Jae-Chun, a spokesman for the operation, told reporters. The military is also closely monitoring the border with the North to prevent Lim from fleeing to the North, Yonhap news agency said, quoting an army official. The 22nd infantry division was the scene of a bloody shooting in 1984, when a private opened fire and threw a grenade at barrack mates, killing 15. Cho Jun-Hee then crossed the border to defect to the North, a move which Pyongyang's state media later confirmed. The site of Saturday's shooting is located just south of the demilitarised zone (DMZ) -- a buffer strip that runs the full length of the 250-kilometre (155-mile) frontier. The four-kilometre-wide DMZ -- known as the world's last Cold War frontier -- features guard posts manned by the rival armies, barbed wire and roads bisecting minefields. Because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty, the two Koreas technically remain at war. Many of the South Korean soldiers on border duty are young male recruits doing their mandatory, two-year military service. These young men make up a large part of the South's 691,000-strong troop presence, compared to 1.17 million in the North. But bullying and cruelty in the barracks have long overshadowed the armed forces, and have been blamed for many fatal incidents in the military. In July 2011, a 19-year-old Marine doing his military service killed four colleagues in a shooting spree on Gangwha island near the border. He tried to kill himself with a grenade but survived. He later said he acted after being bullied. In June 2005, eight soldiers were killed and two seriously wounded when a 22-year-old conscript threw a grenade and sprayed bullets over sleeping colleagues at a frontline guard post north of Seoul. In both those cases the men were court martialed and sentenced to death, although the penalty was not carried out. The military has in recent years taken steps including a ban on beating to tackle what it called a "distorted military culture." - AFP/ir http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/massive-manhunt-for-s/1190490.html
