    Dead Harddisk

Wonder if any of you all have any experience?? Two of my 500GB HD brought around the same time...around two years ago decided to go dead together...one from Hitachi and one from WD...So I go online for warranty... Hitachi collection is with UPS inside cargo complex...so to go in...you need change pass all the trouble... WD I think is accessible to public... then they have all those packing instruction...anti-static bag...box...foam inside box...it seem that they discourage pple to exchange their defective HD by making the process very tedious.... any experience from anyone??
  2. Whats wrong with the water in Pasir Ris? I remembered NEA closed the beach and label the water "NOT SAFE TO SWIM IN" 2 year ago. According to results from a study released by NEA in 2009 during the last annual assessment of water quality at beaches, Pasir Ris beach's water quality is affected by various possible sources, including minor leakage from older sewers, moored vessels, animals, as well as discharges from small-scale Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) that presently serve the more remote areas in Pasir Ris. The low water currents in the concave part of Pasir Ris beach are not effective in diluting and dispersing the discharges. When dead fish wash ashore at Pasir Ris ... by Esther Ng A layer of white covered the muddy banks of Sungei Api Api yesterday, as thousands of white fish, measuring 5cm long each, were washed up onto the shore. The smell of rotting fish could be detected as far as 30m away from the river, which flows through the Pasir Ris estate. "I was frying chicken, but all I smelt was fish," said homemaker Wati Mansor, 47. "The smell was very strong - it even went up to my master bedroom - I felt like I was in a wet market." Mdm Wati's second-floor mansionette at Elias Road overlooks the river. In all her 10 years living in Pasir Ris, this is the first time such an incident has happened, Mdm Wati said. This was confirmed by other residents. Mr Mark Rodrigues, a resident and chief controller at SMRT, told Today that the stench turned up after 3pm. "This is the first time that we have fish dying on the banks," he said. A foreman from Neo Lian Poh Construction, who only gave his name as Wanz, agreed. He told Today that he and his crew have been cleaning the river for two years and there had been no such incidents previously. He said the dead fish were ikan bilis and ikan tamban. About 30 men in reflective vests were spotted cleaning up the banks yesterday. Mr Rodrigues and Mr Wanz believed that the dead fish came from Serangoon Harbour, near Pulau Ubin, and both were puzzled about the cause of death. Residents told Today that the river is commonly used for recreational activities such as canoeing and fishing. The sight of thousands of dead fish yesterday spooked some of them. "If the fish died because the water was polluted and people eat their catch, there's a health concern," said Mdm Wati. Pasir Ris resident Heidi A said: "I'm wondering whether the water is polluted because it's near Pasir Ris beach which until recently was not safe for water activities." According to national water agency PUB, the dead fish were found at the mouth of Sungei Api Api and along Pasir Ris beach yesterday. "(They) were likely to have been washed in by the tide, and some of them were deposited on the river bed of Sungei Api Api. The contractors are currently clearing the dead fishes," it said. "PUB assures the public that this incident has no impact on drinking water quality. The water in Sungei Api Api is not used for the drinking water supply." The National Environment Agency is also investigating the cause of the incident.

These d*mn Yankees keep scr*wing things up and such infuriating stunts will only further provoke the insurgents and other radicals even more, making this already turbulent world even more unstable. Ended up who suffer? Folks like you and me loh... Example: The stepping up of security checks everywhere making it more more costly for both travel/business and these costs filter down to us eventually. One of our very own, a sweet lady was even killed in India as a result of some suicidal radicals some time back. The Marines are previously well-known for their discipline and aggressiveness in battle but sadly since LHO shot JFK, their reputation seem to take a hit henceforth... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1176484/1/.html US Marines urinate on dead insurgents Posted: 13 January 2012 0750 hrs WASHINGTON: A video purportedly showing US Marines urinating on dead insurgents in Afghanistan prompted American condemnation and a Pentagon probe Thursday, but the Taliban said peace efforts would continue. A senior US military official said the Marines believed they had identified the unit at the centre of the allegations, which evoked memories of previous abuses committed by US troops in Iraq and during the decade-long Afghan war. "We cannot release the name of the unit at this time since the incident is being investigated," a spokesman from the Marines said, referring to images that could spark outrage and unrest in Afghanistan and the wider Muslim world. US cable network CNN quoted an unnamed US Marine official as saying the military branch was "confident" the troops in the inflammatory video were from the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The unit deployed to Afghanistan, mainly in Helmand province, in early 2011 and returned in September or October, CNN reported. The video appeared to show four servicemen urinating on three bloodied corpses, and one of the men, apparently aware he was being filmed, saying: "Have a great day, buddy," referring to one of the dead. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta pledged that "those found to have engaged in such conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent," and a Pentagon spokesman confirmed a probe into the alleged abuse was under way. "This conduct is entirely inappropriate for members of the United States military and does not reflect the standards or values our armed forces are sworn to uphold," Panetta said in a statement. "I have seen the footage, and I find the behaviour depicted in it utterly deplorable. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms." US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters of her "total dismay at the story concerning our Marines," and joined Panetta in condemning "the deplorable behaviour that is reflected in this video." "It is absolutely inconsistent with American values, with the standards of behaviour that we expect from our military personnel," Clinton said. The Taliban, who have made recent moves toward talks to end 10 years of US-led war in the impoverished country, described the apparent abuse as "an inhumane and savage act by the American soldiers in Afghanistan." But spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said he did not think it would destroy tentative peace negotiations with the United States, "which at this stage are mainly about prisoner exchange". Earlier in the day, the insurgents issued another statement supporting talks to end the war against US-led forces, while warning that this did not mean surrender. The Pentagon says it has not yet verified the footage, which has been broadcast by leading Afghan television station Tolo News and posted on the Live Leak website. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in a statement that the government of Afghanistan was "deeply disturbed" at the desecration. "This act by American soldiers is simply inhuman and condemnable in the strongest possible terms," he said, requesting that the US urgently investigate and "apply the most severe punishment" to anyone found guilty. On the subject of peace talks, the Taliban, who have announced their readiness to open a political office in Qatar, said they had increased their "political efforts to come to mutual understanding with the world." "But this understanding does not mean a surrender from jihad and neither is it connected to an acceptance of the constitution of the stooge Kabul administration," the hardline Islamists said in a statement received by AFP. "But rather the Islamic Emirate (the Taliban) is utilising its political wing alongside its military presence and jihad in order to realise the national and Islamic aspirations of the nation and its martyrs." The United States earlier announced that it would send a senior official to meet Karzai next week to see if he will agree to a resumption of preliminary talks with the Taliban. A US official said the talks could open within weeks. A key Washington demand for any progress in negotiations is that the Taliban accept the Afghan constitution, which mandates protection for the rights of women and minorities, which were stifled during Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001. Another crucial element would be a renunciation of violence by the Taliban and a break with Al-Qaeda and other "terrorist" groups, the US says. - AFP/wk

  14. Cremation to be Replaced by Eco-friendly Freeze-Drying of Corpses It brings a new meaning to the phrase "dust to dust". Funerals in Britain could soon end with the body of a loved-one being frozen to -196C in liquid nitrogen and then shaken until it disintegrates into powder. The process - known as "promession" - could be the answer to the dwindling amount of space in Britain's cemeteries as well as being more environmentally friendly than cremation, say campaigners. It has already been given the go-ahead in Sweden, and now councils are lobbying the Government to change the law to allow it to happen here - currently bodies can only be buried or cremated. A survey of 100 local authorities found that more than a quarter were already actively considering freeze-drying bodies, the latest being Preston in Lancashire. Many cemeteries will run out of space within ten years, forcing councils to consider unpopular solutions such as "double-decker" graves, with coffins buried on top of one another, or even vertically - effectively standing up. Around seven out of ten people currently opt for the cheaper option of cremation, but that also has its problems. Burning dental fillings creates mercury emissions, and Government targets mean filters must be fitted to crematoria, some of which may have to be completely rebuilt as a result at a cost of millions. Supporters also say it boosts the environment further as it is better at recycling nutrients than burial where the body is embalmed and buried at greater depth. So as bizarre as it sounds, growing numbers of councils are signing up to the idea of freeze-drying bodies. The process involves dipping the body in -196C liquid nitrogen until it is brittle, and then placing it on a vibrating mat so it disintegrates into powder. Remains A magnetic field then removes metal objects like fillings and artificial limbs from the remains. The town of J

  19. 5-year-old boy found dead in Choa Chu Kang A five-year-old boy, who was left with his elder brother, was found dead due to unnatural causes in their home in western Singapore on Sunday morning. It is understood that Muhamad Irfan and his seven-year-old brother have been under the care of their aunt, Sapiah Awang, 47, who lives in a HDB flat in Teck Whye estate, which is part of Choa Chu Kang. The boys' parents are currently in jail. A neighbour said that Sapiah, who is employed as a dishwasher, discovered the boy lying motionless on a mattress in the middle of his living room upon returning home from work at around 2 am, reported The Straits Times. "She was frantic when she ran to my house and asked me for help," said neighbour Mohd Atatn, 82, who resides four doors away from Sapiah. The retiree said that he followed to her house and saw the boy lying on the mattress, while the boy's brother was sitting quietly next to his body. He also told Sapiah to inform the police. The brothers are believed to have been playing police and thief, and had used strings to tie each other up on the night of the tragedy. Marks, which Mohd Atan described as "blue-black", were found on Irfan's wrists. It is understood that he also suffered injuries and bruises on other parts of his body, believed to have been caused by rough play. Still, it is not known whether those injuries are related to his death. Other neighbours interviewed by the same paper said that it was common for both boys to be left alone at home when their aunt was at work. However, they did not know much information about Sapiah, or for how long the boys have been under her care. A neighbour who declined to be named said she had seen the brothers playing with each other, but had never seen them quarrel or fight. A police spokesman said the police received a call at 2.15am, informing them that a boy was lying in his flat and could not be woken up. He was pronounced dead at 2.35am. Both Sapiah and Irfan's elder brother are assisting the police in investigations, although no arrests have been made. Investigations are going on and the case has been classified as an unnatural death.
  20. Hi everyone, I have started on a new topic as my FYP idea is rejected by my teacher, he wants something simpler. Seriously wasted my plans. Sigh now he wants something like cylindrical shape so will be more stable. And now what I am stressing on is the separation in the cylinder. How am I going to separate the oil and water mixture taken in from the sea? Anyone from marine industry has good ideas on how can I actually install some oil separation techniques into this cylinder? Thanks

  23. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/p...how/8142077.cms he body of Al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea after he was killed by US covert forces in Pakistan , US media reported Monday. Cable television networks CNN, MSNBC and Fox said a senior US official had confirmed to them that bin Laden's body had been buried in the sea, without giving further details. US officials did not respond when contacted by AFP for confirmation of the reports. But earlier an administration official said of the corpse: "We are ensuring that it is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition. "This is something that we take very seriously. And so therefore this is being handled in an appropriate manner." Burying bin Laden's body at sea would ensure that his final resting place does not become a shrine and a place of pilgrimage for his followers, ABC television reported earlier.
