The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call at 12.40pm and sent an ambulance to the scene. The man, who is believed to have plunged from a height, was pronounced dead at the scene. Foldable screens were set up to obscure the gruesome scene, where at least four areas were covered with white plastic sheets. The man's body which lay nearby was covered with a blue police tent. One of the hotel's restaurants on the ground floor, Introbar, was also temporarily closed, with foldable screens set up to cover its full-length glass windows which faced the walkway outside. 6. The "King of the Blues", guitarist and singer BB King, has died aged 89. King, known for his hits My Lucille, Sweet Little Angel and Rock Me Baby, died in his sleep in Las Vegas. Born in Mississippi, King began performing in the 1940s, going on to influence a generation of musicians and work with Eric Clapton and U2. Once ranked as the third greatest guitarist of all time, he had been suffering ill health in recent months. He was recently taken to hospital with a diabetes-related illness. Media captionEric Clapton: "BB King was beacon for blues music" Fellow musicians paid tribute to King including blues guitarist Buddy Guy, who often played with him. "BB King was the greatest guy I ever met," he wrote on Instagram. "The tone he got out of that guitar, the way he shook his left wrist, the way he squeezed the strings… man, he came out with that and it was all new to whole guitar playin' world. "He could play so smooth, he didn't have to put on a show. The way BB did it is the way we all do it now. He was my best friend and father to us all." Clapton posted a video tribute on Facebook to express his sadness at the death of his "dear friend". "I want to thank him for all the inspiration and encouragement he gave me as a player over the years, and for the friendship that we enjoyed," he said. "There's not a lot left to say because this music is almost a thing of the past now, and there are not many left who play it in the pure way that BB did. He was a beacon for all of us who love this kind of music." Lenny Kravitz tweeted: "BB, anyone could play a thousand notes and never say what you said in one." Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora added: "My friend and legend BB King passed. I'm so so sad, he was so great to me. We've lost the King. My love and prayers to his family." Former Beatle Ringo Starr tweeted: "God bless BB King, peace and love to his family." Actor Hugh Laurie said: "Oh God. BB King. Let the sad times roll." And singer Will Young added: "BB King- the most wonderful blues singer and guitarist. I suggest everyone gets one of his records to hear true soul and spirit." A former farmhand, King was awarded his 15th Grammy award in 2009 for his album One Kind Favor. Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue. Media captionBB King speaking to the BBC in 2009: 'I can't retire, I need the money' He was also inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone magazine placed him behind only Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Until recently, King performed in at least 100 concerts a year. 'Heartfelt vocals' He fused together both jazz and blues on his beloved guitar, a Gibson ES-355 he lovingly dubbed "Lucille". In the early part of his career, he played to exclusively black audiences, but his heartfelt vocals and undeniable talent saw him embraced by a much broader fanbase as time went on - touring Europe and topping the charts. Younger musicians such as Clapton and Steve Miller, who admired his work, introduced him to a new generation of fans in the late '60s with hits like The Thrill is Gone. Media captionBB King invited Newsnight's Stephen Smith on his tour bus in 2009 Albums such as Live at County Cook Jail and BB King in London followed. His career was reignited in the late 1980s when he duetted with U2 on When Love Comes To Town. At the turn of the millennium, aged 75, he once again achieved major commercial success with the Eric Clapton collaboration Riding With the King. "King's is now the name most synonymous with the blues, much as Louis Armstrong's once was with jazz," critic Francis Davis wrote in his 1995 book The History of the Blues. "You don't have to be a blues fan to have heard of King."

  14. https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/mysterious-condition-killing-workers-dongguan-170034924.html A Mysterious Condition Is Killing Workers In Dongguan, China In Their Sleep By Mamta Badkar | Business Insider – 20 hours ago REUTERS/Bobby Yip The Chinese city of Dongguan, in the southern province of Guangdong, has seen a surge in the number of workers that are dying in their sleep, reports Andrea Chen at South China Morning Post. There have been 893 cases of sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) from January 2001 to October 2013, up from 231 cases seen between January 1990 to December 1999. Autopsies have revealed that these workers had no terminal illness or injury and that the workers were otherwise healthy. The report found that the young male workers suddenly had a hard time breathing while they were sleeping, though the cause for this was unknown. Researchers at Zhongshan School of Medicine, cited by Guangzhou Daily, found that young manual laborers were most at risk. More than 90% of those that died were manual laborers and the researchers said longer hours and poor work and living conditions put them at higher risk. More than 90% of the victims were male. Dongguan was once one of China's biggest manufacturing hubs with the city's GDP rising 19.5% annually between 2003 and 2006. But after the financial crisis, growth slumped to 5.3% in 2009. The mayor of Dongguan expects growth to pick up to 9% in 2014 as a result of investment in certain high-tech projects. More recently, the city came under the scanner as it was dubbed China's sex capital. A recent paper on SUNDS by Chao Liu et al, published in Forensic Science International, looks at SUNDS in Southern China and related diseases from other countries. From the paper: As an ethnic and region specific natural death, sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) or sudden unexplained death during sleep (SUDS), is a disorder that prevails predominantly in Southeast Asia and has various synonyms in different countries such as the Philippines (bangungut), Thailand (lai-tai), Japan (pokkuri), and China (sudden manhood death syndrome). The annual incidence of SUNDS has been reported to be as high as 43 per 100,000 people aged 20–40 years in the Philippines and 38 per 100,000 people aged 20–49 years in Thailand. In Southern China, the incidence is about 1 per 100,000 people. These reported worldwide syndromes have an unusual clinical phenotype in common: the vast majority of victims were apparently healthy young males between 20 and 50 years old; death mostly occurred at night during sleep with symptoms of moaning, tachypnea, and abrupt tic of limbs; gross autopsy and microscopic findings showed no morphological changes to elucidate the cause of death. Since its initial description in 1917 in the Philippines, SUNDS has remained an enigma to both forensic pathologists and clinicians. The paper examined whether SUNDS is a function of a disorder in the cardiac sodium channel, which is responsible for the function of the myocardium, a heart muscle. "Our data suggest that a majority of Chinese SUNDS may be due to other mechanisms that lead to an increased risk for sudden death during sleep," the authors write. In China meanwhile, the focus continues to be on working conditions — which could exasperate an underlying disorder. Zhang Yiri, an associate professor from Guangzhou City Polytechnic told China Daily that many factories pay low basic salaries but pay much better for overtime work. Zhang said this has caused many laborers to work extra hours to make more money but also puts them at higher risk. https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/mysterious-condition-killing-workers-dongguan-170034924.html

  18. <_< Singaporeans are already feeding him for life. Drug courier spared death now challenges caning sentence Malaysian drug courier Yong Vui Kong, who was spared the gallows after a string of unsuccessful fights against his death sentence, is now challenging the caning regime in Singapore. Yong, 25, was re-sentenced in November last year to life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane. This followed changes to the law which give judges the discretion to impose life terms and caning, instead of the previously mandatory death penalty, for drug couriers who help the authorities in a substantive way. However, Yong filed an appeal last week, asking for his caning sentence to be quashed. His lawyer M Ravi is challenging the constitutionality of caning, in particular the manner in which the punishment is carried out. http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/courts-crime/story/drug-courier-spared-death-now-challenges-caning-sentence-20140428

  20. Many of us from the 70's will remember this man ........... I started smoking after seeing you but quit much earlier than you ... R.I.P. yahoo news: Ex-Marlboro man dies from smoking-related disease LOS ANGELES (AP) — When it came to portraying the rugged western outdoorsman who helped transform a pack of filtered cigarettes into the world's most popular brand, Marlboro Man Eric Lawson was the real deal. Ruggedly handsome, the actor could ride a horse through the wide-open spaces of the Southwest, from Texas to Colorado to Arizona or wherever else the Phillip Morris tobacco company sent him to light up while representing a true American icon, the cowboy. And he really did smoke Marlboro cigarettes, as many as three packs a day. Lawson was still smoking in 2006 when he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He died of the disease at his home in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 10. He was 72. For three years in the late 1970s and early '80s, Lawson portrayed one of the most iconic figures in both advertising and popular culture. And for the past several years, Lawson had spoken out fiercely about the hazards of smoking, doing a public service announcement for the American Cancer Society in the 1990s, years before he was able to bring himself to quit. "He tried to speak to the kids, telling them don't start smoking," his wife, Susan Lawson, told The Associated Press. "He already knew cigarettes had a hold on him." more on his news, link: http://sg.entertainment.yahoo.com/news/ex-marlboro-man-dies-smoking-related-disease-034350253.html
  21. Since there is a thread on low birth rate, i propose its only right people remaining single or not wanting kids have a look at this documentary. I chance upon this youtube doc recently and would like to share it in MCF. Its purely educational and for general knowledge and i find this very meaningfull. It tells me out-right that having a family is what matters in life. Nobody deserves to go off alone this way. It basically show when a single people without any family nor relative whom have pass-on, how the state puts him/her to rest accordingly to the state law. At least thats how they do it in the US. It really brightens me up when i go home and see my OC & kids and knowing in due time, i wont be going off alone and lonely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErooOhzE268&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  24. Another one for the 7th month files. I wonder how this happened? Suicide? Spontaneous human combustion? Unfortunate smoking accident? A woman's charred corpse was found at the Ceylon Sports Club at Balestier Road yesterday morning. According to Lianhe Zaobao, an eyewitness last saw her on fire at 11.50am, when she fell onto the grass. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the incident and rushed to the scene, but she had already died, reported the Chinese daily. After her body was removed, the silhouette of her scorched body remained on the grass. Six women and one man later appeared at the scene, and one of the women who was middle aged and wearing a yellow sari had to be helped to her feet by the others. The group later went to a nearby HDB estate and met a young man.
