  2. http://www.edn.com/design/automotive/4423428/Toyota-s-killer-firmware--Bad-design-and-its-consequences Toyota's killer firmware: Bad design and its consequences Michael Dunn - October 28, 2013 70 Comments On Thursday October 24, 2013, an Oklahoma court ruled against Toyota in a case of unintended acceleration that lead to the death of one the occupants. Central to the trial was the Engine Control Module's (ECM) firmware. Embedded software used to be low-level code we'd bang together using C or assembler. These days, even a relatively straightforward, albeit critical, task like throttle control is likely to use a sophisticated RTOS and tens of thousands of lines of code. With all this sophistication, standards and practices for design, coding, and testing become paramount – especially when the function involved is safety-critical. Failure is not an option. It is something to be contained and benign. So what happens when an automaker decides to wing it and play by their own rules? To disregard the rigorous standards, best practices, and checks and balances required of such software (and hardware) design? People are killed, reputations ruined, and billions of dollars are paid out. That's what happens. Here's the story of some software that arguably never should have been. For the bulk of this research, EDN consulted Michael Barr, CTO and co-founder of Barr Group, an embedded systems consulting firm, last week. As a primary expert witness for the plaintiffs, the in-depth analysis conducted by Barr and his colleagues illuminates a shameful example of software design and development, and provides a cautionary tale to all involved in safety-critical development, whether that be for automotive, medical, aerospace, or anywhere else where failure is not tolerable. Barr is an experienced developer, consultant, former professor, editor, blogger, and author. Barr's ultimate conclusions were that: Toyota’s electronic throttle control system (ETCS) source code is of unreasonable quality. Toyota’s source code is defective and contains bugs, including bugs that can cause unintended acceleration (UA). Code-quality metrics predict presence of additional bugs. Toyota’s fail safes are defective and inadequate (referring to them as a “house of cards” safety architecture). Misbehaviors of Toyota’s ETCS are a cause of UA. A damning summary to say the least. Let's look at what lead him to these conclusions: Hardware Although the investigation focused almost entirely on software, there is at least one HW factor: Toyota claimed the 2005 Camry's main CPU had error detecting and correcting (EDAC) RAM. It didn't. EDAC, or at least parity RAM, is relatively easy and low-cost insurance for safety-critical systems. Other cases of throttle malfunction have been linked to tin whiskers in the accelerator pedal sensor. This does not seem to have been the case here. The Camry ECM board. U2 is a NEC (now Renesas) V850 microcontroller. Software The ECM software formed the core of the technical investigation. What follows is a list of the key findings. Mirroring (where key data is written to redundant variables) was not always done. This gains extra significance in light of … Stack overflow. Toyota claimed only 41% of the allocated stack space was being used. Barr's investigation showed that 94% was closer to the truth. On top of that, stack-killing, MISRA-C rule-violating recursion was found in the code, and the CPU doesn't incorporate memory protection to guard against stack overflow. Two key items were not mirrored: The RTOS' critical internal data structures; and—the most important bytes of all, the final result of all this firmware—the TargetThrottleAngle global variable. Although Toyota had performed a stack analysis, Barr concluded the automaker had completely botched it. Toyota missed some of the calls made via pointer, missed stack usage by library and assembly functions (about 350 in total), and missed RTOS use during task switching. They also failed to perform run-time stack monitoring. Toyota's ETCS used a version of OSEK, which is an automotive standard RTOS API. For some reason, though, the CPU vendor-supplied version was not certified compliant. Unintentional RTOS task shutdown was heavily investigated as a potential source of the UA. As single bits in memory control each task, corruption due to HW or SW faults will suspend needed tasks or start unwanted ones. Vehicle tests confirmed that one particular dead task would result in loss of throttle control, and that the driver might have to fully remove their foot from the brake during an unintended acceleration event before being able to end the unwanted acceleration. A litany of other faults were found in the code, including buffer overflow, unsafe casting, and race conditions between tasks.
  3. I think finally they are realising that producing cheap looking cars with boring design doesnt sell, eg. The latest Civic. They have a new grille design too: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOKYO, Japan, September 5, 2013 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced a new design concept, "EXCITING H DESIGN!!!," that will be applied to all Honda automobiles globally to promote a more unique character and stronger presence around the world. New design concept: "EXCITING H DESIGN!!!" New design identity: "Solid Wing Face" The three exclamation marks in "EXCITING H DESIGN!!!" represent three design factors, namely "High Tech." which represents an innovative spirit, "High Tension" which represents the pursuit of a beautiful body structure and layout, and "High Touch" which represents finely-honed surfacing and texture. By incorporating these three factors into exterior and interior design, more unique and exciting Honda designs will be realized. This new design concept has been first applied to the all-new Fit model, with the application to be expanded in stages to other Honda vehicles around the world. Exterior design: High Tech. Honda's new design identity, "Solid Wing Face," is adopted. While positioning the "H" mark in the center, the area from the front grill to the headlights will be designed in an advanced style as one uninterrupted flow. High Tension A well-toned body with beautiful proportion, "Athlete Form," is realized. High Touch Honda strives to realize "Dramatic Surfacing," well-elaborated form that provides an emotional attraction. Interior design: High Tech. Honda pursues an easy-to-see/easy-to-use "Advanced Interface" by adopting advanced technologies. High Tension A sporty and emotional "Personal Cockpit" is realized. High Touch Honda expresses its "Craftsmanship" by creating thoughtful interiors with an emphasis on the texture of materials.

  6. Kia Motors, South Korea's second largest auto manufacturer has been making automobiles for quite sometime. They first started making re-badged Mazda Familia during the 1970s. It was only during the late 1980s that Kia started manufacturing vehicles extensively and by the early 1990s, you could virtually see a Kia vehicle in almost every major market. Fast forward to today, the company is fast moving into the upscale region and it is not surprising when the company announced that they are aiming to be a premium global automotive brand. During a recent function where the company's top dealers and distributors met, Kia Motors' president, Lee Hyoung Keun announced the company's five-year target and its goal is to be on the same level with European and Japanese premium auto brands. Mr. Lee also mentioned that the company will develop ever-more sophisticated vehicles that customers will aspire to own. He also confirmed that the company has set a target of exporting 2.21 million units of vehicles to overseas market. This is an increase of 8.3 percent over the 2.04 million units sold last year. If you were to ask me, this goal that Kia Motors are trying to achieve is hugely possible. Just take a look at Kia's current models. They are very much more aesthetically pleasing, compared to its older models. Kia's ever increasing popularity is basically built on its stylish new designs and at the same time, it has made Kia one of the fastest growing auto brands. The company has previously stated that one of its priorities is to improve the quality and technology featured in its cars and hopefully that this will help in brand perception. When Kia meets its five-year target, we will have to see at which new level the automaker has reached and at the rate they are going; I have a strong feeling that Kia will surpass some Japanese auto companies.

  8. The name Sergio Pininfarina is synonymous with excellent looking cars. For those who are not familiar with the name, Sergio Pininfarina was an automotive designer who has designed many cars and most of them were Ferraris. Some of the cars that he designed were the Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari Testarossa, Bentley Azure and the Alfa Romeo 164. Sadly, Sergio Pininfarina passed away this past July and to honour his creations done for Ferrari; the Italian automaker will hold an exhibition at its official museum in Maranello, Italy. The exhibition will be known as Le grandi Ferrari di Sergio Pininfarina (Sergio Pininfarina
  9. Just a few days ago, I stumbled on a Facebook page that would interest many car enthusiasts. Known as Hive, the pictures you see here are actually car posters. There are designed by a New Zealander guy who goes by the name of Joel Fletcher. Joel Fletcher (who I strongly believe is a graphic designer) uses his designing knowledge to create these rather incredible looking automotive posters. There is even a video on the page which shows how he makes them and he has mentioned that he uses the Adobe InDesign software. Some of his creations are grouped in one poster, for example the Porsche 911 history poster, and he also has designed several posters of historical race cars. My favourite is a poster of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ which can be hung in both ways so that one car will appear like a mirror image. Fletcher

In the 2011 feature film, Captain America, Red Skull
  11. Ok, I need to state that these might not be the Volvo R-Design models. I'm just thinking that if the WRX is at 210bhp, the nearest these Volvos could match is 180 if just baseline spec-ed. Next level should be R-Design.
  12. "Cars from Toyota look boring." I am not surprised if you have heard something like this before as I have heard it many times. When Toyota stopped offering several sporty looking models roughly ten years ago, many people have mentioned that the Japanese automaker's cars after that look a little dull. "The company wants to improve its car design into its future models. Toyota already has good reliability in manufacturing cars but their design has been rather weak. Our cars are frequently characterised as 'appliances' and the automaker wants to turn that around," explained Kevin Hunter, President of Toyota's CALTY Design Studio. Hunter further explained that they will act more instinctively by listening to what consumers want but not only by listening to what they want as consumers do not know what they want in five years time. The company has to make some predictions on how the designs will be like. It was the sleek, aggressive and good looking Scion FR-S (Scion
  13. Hi All, share your video quality here Here's mine (lower your volume, I had my windows opened.) and Video quality was very poor and unfocused. Focus was rather good when the object is like 1meter away from the lens.' No idea why the lens was tuned to near focus when the purpose was to focus on objects 20~30 meters infront of the car.
  14. Fancy having an image of Hello Kitty or Autobot logo printed on your tyres? Your wish may come true as Bridgestone Corporation recently announced that it has developed a revolutionary new printing technology for tires that is different from any tyre printing or coloring process on the market today. With the existing tyre construction, white rubber has always been used on the sidewalls to make white ribbon and white lettering. This process requires usage of large amounts of white rubber to prevent discoloration and to maintain high durability. The construction process of creating whitewalls and lettering can add weight to the tyre. Bridgestone's advanced tyre printing technology consists of a layer to protect the surface from discoloration as the base, newly-developed inks for this technology, and a layer to protect the image from external damages on the surface. Through this new technology, Bridgestone can realise more creative showcase of tyres while addressing environmental concern of additional weight, which can affect fuel efficiency. Bridgestone will continue to explore the opportunities associated with this new tyre printing technology. For instance, customer can specify his own design or photographs to be printed on the sidewalls. If his taste changes next time, the image can be removed or updated. Bridgestone has not given a date whereby the new technology will be mass marketed but they plan to do so soon.
  15. The usage of a turbocharger on an electric motor is nothing new. Many aftermarket tuners have done it and some automakers have experimented on it. But no company have ever implemented it on a production vehicle. BMW has now filed a patent for its electric turbocharger design and they may be the first automaker to use such technology. BMW recently filed a German patent for its electric turbocharger design and implementation wise, it may take a while before we get to see it being used on their production vehicles. But at least, we know that someone or some company is developing such technology. Before I continue on how the electric turbocharger works, let me explain a little about turbochargers and also on small turbo vs. a big turbo, for those who don

  17. ht tp://www.gizmag.com/citroen-tubik-concept-high-tech-executive-shuttle-bus/19714/ Yet another interesting mobility idea to be seen for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show is Citroen's Tubik concept - a high-tech, high-comfort, connected executive shuttle. The idea came from Citroen's Multicity project, an online route-finder portal that provides a door-to-destination transport solution using all available modes - car, train, bus, plane etc. In looking at the big picture, Citroen realised that something was missing - a vehicle was needed that was more than a taxi and more flexible than a limousine. The Citroen Tubik is that solution. It has been fashioned using the latest technologies to be uber-comfortable with a flexible interior adaptable to carry a group of people or a single person and luggage. To make Tubik look even more protective, Citroen designers combined two contrasting colours: the metal grey of the body shell envelops the pearlescent white at either end, marking the position of the combustion engine (at the front) and electric motor (at the rear) used by the full-hybrid diesel drive train. With this simple but attractive exterior, the large two-way panoramic window and two large doors giving access to the driving position and living area are barely visible. The driver's door is rear-opening while the side door runs in a circle to free up the entire side of the vehicle.

  19. Just asking cause this is the 2nd time I seen a Honda turned turtle. The last one ram into a stationary MRS and turned turtle. I think its a City. Now a Civic turned turtle in MSCP. I just wonder if its problem with driver or car. I just simply don't understand how such things can happen.
  20. Has to know are there any professional car designers in Singapore - locals and foreigners? An NUS engineering team won the recent Shell Eco Marathon Asia competition at Sepang Circuit with the NUS KRUCE Eco Car. Impressive achievement although the car looked a little odd.

  22. [extract] Kia Motors is one of the main winners in the first-ever Automotive Brand Contest. This new international brand and design competition for new cars was organised by the German Design Council, which is also responsible for the German Design Award. Kia walked away with no less than four awards from the contest. More importantly, the Korean giant won the
  23. I have seen the 175 to 235 tyres all uses the same thread design. The water grooves are same width. Shouldn't smaller tyres 175 have narrower water grooves, as there is lesser volume of water to push out from the smaller footprint? Sometimes I wonder how the tyres thread are designed for wide or narrow tyres? The reason is same thread design on different sized tyres do give different results. Which is why nowadays, the tyres test must state the tyres size and whether front/rear wheel drive.
