  2. Another one! RIP Seems like a major recall of the big names up there. Must be one helluva rocking concert.... Earth, Wind & Fire soul band founder Maurice White dies From the sectionEntertainment & Arts Image copyright: Getty Images Image caption: In a career that stems back to the 1960s, Maurice White was a singer-songwriter, producer and Earth, Wind & Fire bandleader The founder of soul group Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, has died in the US, his brother has said. White, 74, died in his sleep in Los Angeles on Thursday morning. He suffered from Parkinson's Disease. His band had a series of hits including September, Boogie Wonderland, Shining Star and After the Love has Gone. The singer-songwriter was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1992 but his condition was reported to have got worse in recent months. Earth, Wind & Fire were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, and Maurice was individually inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. Earth, Wind & Fire have sold more than 90 million albums worldwide. "My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep," Verdine White, also a member of the band, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "While the world has lost another great musician and legend, our family asks that our privacy is respected as we start what will be a very difficult and life changing transition in our lives. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes." Earth, Wind & FireA nine-piece band centred around the two White brothers and singer Philip Bailey The band's most successful period began with the 1975 album That's The Way of The World They remained prominent in the charts for at least a decade afterwards White publicly revealed he was suffering from Parkinson's at the time of the band's Hall of Fame induction He stopped touring with the band in 1995 because of a combination of tiredness and health problems White said in an interview with the Associated Press news agency in 2000 that he wanted Earth, Wind & Fire's music to inspire people rather than just entertain them. "That was the whole objective, to try to inspire young people to believe in themselves and to follow through on their ideas," he said. "We've touched so many people with these songs." A former session drummer, White formed a band called Salty Peppers in the Chicago area in the late 1960s. He subsequently moved to Los Angeles, disposing of all of the band members except Verdine, The band was renamed Earth, Wind & Fire after the three elements in his astrological chart. Many of the group's earlier hits were characterised by Bailey's bright falsetto voice. The band is perhaps best known for its exuberant, horn-driven mix of jazz, funk, gospel and Big Band music played at concerts where they performed in glitzy costumes underneath multi-coloured lights. They played at many top venues including the Super Bowl and the White House. "We live in a negative society,'" White informed Newsweek at the peak of the band's success. "Most people can't see beauty and love. I see our music as medicine."

  4. Wow. what a way to go. Perhaps he died a happy man. Boys & girls do not do this at home, okay? Man shower with gf....slipped and fell through glass bathroom door...didn't survive. RIP For those with glass bathroom door change them to acrylic or tempered glass . Safer....if you want to piak piak in the shower also safer. http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/man-dies-after-crash-through-glass-bathroom-door Sep 29, 2015 6:00am By SHAFFIQ ALKHATIB He slipped, smashed his head through the glass panel of a bathroom door and later died. Sebastian Wong Yu Lun was only 24 when he died in the most horrific way on Jan 25, in front of a frantic girlfriend who was helpless to save him. Details of the tragedy emerged in a inquiry into his death yesterday. When Mr Wong hit the glass panel, the sharp broken edges impaled his neck. He also had multiple cuts on his head. Mr Wong, a car salesman, had been taking a shower with his girlfriend, identified only as Ms L, at her flat at Teban Gardens Road. As Mr Wong was about to leave the shower, he slipped. Ms L was shocked to hear the glass panel shatter and frantically tried to free Mr Wong when she realised he was injured and trapped. Her sister, who was not named in court papers, called emergency services as Ms L fought to free her boyfriend. After a struggle, she managed to free him and he fell flat on his back. He was still conscious but struggling as she propped him into a sitting position. She dressed herself and used a towel to suppress the bleeding. State Coroner Marvin Bay said: "She noted, however, that Mr Wong stopped his struggles and appeared to lose consciousness after five minutes, lying unconscious on the floor. "Ms L tried to perform CPR by giving chest compressions in accordance with instructions by an SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) operator through the phone and relayed by her sister." WEAK PULSE A paramedic who had arrived at the scene detected a weak pulse and the ambulance took Mr Wong to hospital, but he could not be saved. He was pronounced dead about 40 minutes after the accident.Mr Wong had suffered multiple incised wounds to the head and neck, said consultant forensic pathologist Marian Wang, which led to his death. She also said that Mr Wong died of multiple incised wounds to the head and neck. Coroner Bay said: "The nature of the incised wounds was found to be consistent with those caused by sharp, broken glass fragments." He found that Mr Wong had died from an "unfortunate misadventure". Following the tragedy, senior forensic scientist Li Yuhua from the Forensic Chemistry and Physics Laboratory of the Health Sciences Authority, produced a report on the analysis of the glass fracture. It revealed that the panel was not made of tempered glass. Instead, Coroner Bay said that it was likely to be made of heat-strengthened glass. In his findings, he added that it may be prudent to use tempered glass panels on doors or windows in places where falls may commonly occur. He said: "Tempered glass fragments are less likely to have sharp edges (when broken), which may help to avoid the occurrence of catastrophic or even fatal injuries, upon any person breaking or shattering glass fixtures."

  7. Sir Christopher Lee has died at the age of 93 after being hospitalised for respiratory problems and heart failure. The veteran actor, best known for a variety of films from Dracula to The Wicker Man through to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, passed away on Sunday morning at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, according to sources. The decision to release the news days after was based on his wife’s desire to inform family members first. The couple had been married for over 50 years. As well as his career in film, Lee also released a series of heavy metal albums, including Charlemagne: The Omens of Death. He was knighted in 2009 for services to drama and charity and was awarded the Bafta fellowship in 2011. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jun/11/christopher-lee-dies-at-the-age-of-93-dracula
  8. US daredevil dies in Yosemite jumping accident https://sg.news.yahoo.com/us-daredevil-potter-dies-jumping-accident-083834489.html A world-renowned extreme athlete died along with another man during a stunt at the Yosemite National Park in California, US media said Sunday. Tributes poured in from all over the globe for Dean Potter, 43, following his death on Saturday. He and fellow BASE jumper Graham Hunt, 29, were killed during a jump at Taft Point, ABC News said, citing Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman. Reports filtered through to park officials on Saturday of an accident and a helicopter spotted the two bodies on Sunday. When Rangers got to them about noon, they were identified as Potter and Hunt, Gediman said. Other media said the pair had been attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point but smashed into a rocky outcrop when they tried to fly through a narrow gap in the mountains. On Potter's official Facebook page -- where he describes himself as "artist, adventurer, athlete" -- extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world paid tribute to the man admired for his fearlessness and incredible courage. His last Facebook post, on May 12, shows a picture of his dog in a mountainous landscape and the caption: "Miss Whisper. Yosemite Dog." In an interview with The New York Times in 2008, Potter said: "Part of me says it's kind of crazy to think you can fly your human body. "Another part of me thinks all of us have had the dream that we can fly. Why not chase after it? Maybe it brings you to some other tangent. Chasing after the unattainable is the fun part." BASE stands for buildings, antennas, spans and Earth that jumpers can parachute from. It is illegal in US national parks.

"He could play so smooth, he didn't have to put on a show. The way BB did it is the way we all do it now. He was my best friend and father to us all." Clapton posted a video tribute on Facebook to express his sadness at the death of his "dear friend". "I want to thank him for all the inspiration and encouragement he gave me as a player over the years, and for the friendship that we enjoyed," he said. "There's not a lot left to say because this music is almost a thing of the past now, and there are not many left who play it in the pure way that BB did. He was a beacon for all of us who love this kind of music." Lenny Kravitz tweeted: "BB, anyone could play a thousand notes and never say what you said in one." Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora added: "My friend and legend BB King passed. I'm so so sad, he was so great to me. We've lost the King. My love and prayers to his family." 'Heartfelt vocals' He fused together both jazz and blues on his beloved guitar, a Gibson ES-355 he lovingly dubbed "Lucille". In the early part of his career, he played to exclusively black audiences, but his heartfelt vocals and undeniable talent saw him embraced by a much broader fanbase as time went on - touring Europe and topping the charts. Younger musicians such as Clapton and Steve Miller, who admired his work, introduced him to a new generation of fans in the late '60s with hits like The Thrill is Gone. At the turn of the millennium, aged 75, he once again achieved major commercial success with the Eric Clapton collaboration Riding With the King. "King's is now the name most synonymous with the blues, much as Louis Armstrong's once was with jazz," critic Francis Davis wrote in his 1995 book The History of the Blues. "You don't have to be a blues fan to have heard of King."

  11. wah... didn't know JFK was so garang as a soldier. he led a 3 mile ocean swim with a ruptured spinal disc, pulling one injured soldier along......... He kept a coconut in his presidential office A Solomon Islander who helped save John F. Kennedy when a Japanese destroyer sank the future US president's patrol boat during World War II has died aged 93, his family said Monday. Eroni Kumana and his fellow islander Buiku Gasa were out in a canoe in 1943 when they came across the injured Kennedy, who was then a naval lieutenant, and members of his crew stranded on a coral atoll. The pair helped the Americans survive and Kennedy went on to become the 35th president of the United States, keeping a coconut from the ordeal as a paperweight on his White House desk. Kumana's son Esori said his father passed away surrounded by family members on Saturday aged 93 and was laid to rest on his home island of Ronongga on Monday. "It was very sad (but) he lived a full life and we are proud of him," he told AFP via telephone from the island, where villagers were preparing a feast in Kumana's honour. Kennedy's boat PT-109 was on a night-time patrol when a Japanese destroyer suddenly loomed out of the dark and sheared the wooden vessel in half, according to the Smithsonian magazine. Spilled fuel ignited in the water, causing both the Japanese and other US PT boats to assume the 13-man crew had all perished in the shark-infested waters. In fact, 11 of them were still alive and when dawn broke Kennedy led his crew on a five-kilometre (three-mile) swim from the boat's wreckage to a coral atoll. Kennedy, who had suffered a ruptured spinal disc, towed a badly burned crewman behind him during the marathon swim. Eventually Kumana and Gasa passed in their canoe. They helped collect food for the crew and Kennedy sent them off to get help with a message etched into the shell of a coconut, reading: "Nauru Isl commander/native knows posit/he can pilot/11 alive/need small boat/Kennedy". After being rescued, Kennedy retrieved the coconut and had it encased in plastic, using it as a paperweight throughout his post-war political career. It is still on display in the Kennedy Museum in Boston. Kumana and Gasa were invited to Kennedy's 1961 inauguration but were unable to make the trip to Washington. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Gasa died in November 2005

Slym, who was scripting a revival strategy for the company, had gone to Thailand to attend a board meeting of the firm's unit there. A company spokesperson said a postmortem would be carried out on Monday. Details about the accident were sketchy. Bloomberg quoted a company spokeswoman as saying that he fell from the city's Shangri-La hotel, where he was staying, Slym, 51, a British national, was known to be an affable and highly-focused manager. He was the head of GM's India operations before joining Tata Motors in October 2012. He was the first expatriate and the fourth managing director of the $100 billion Tata Group's flagship company, Tata Motors. "Karl (Slym) joined us in October 2012, and was a valued colleague who was providing strong leadership at a challenging time for the Indian auto industry. In this hour of grief, our thoughts are with Karl's wife and family," Tata Motors chairman Cyrus P Mistry said in a statement. Tata Motors has been going through a rough patch particularly as buyers shunned the low-cost Nano after its spectacular debut in March 2009. It's other cars such as the Indica and Indigo too have struggled in a market hit by the economic slowdown. As part of a restructuring exercise Slym last week had announced a voluntary retirement scheme to trim costs. Slym, who had a Master of Science in Business Administration from Stanford University, was not new to challenges. Between 2007 and 2011, he had steered GM India through very tough times. Hit hard by the global economic slump after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, GM had gone bankrupt in the US, denting consumer confidence even in India. He soon came out with an answer to instil confidence among buyers, unleashing the 'Chevy promise' campaign, where he appeared in ads with his hand over the heart, promising to offer free maintenance and service for all GM cars for three years after payment of a nominal amount. The scheme worked for GM India. Although, Slym left for China, his stint at GM India had come under scrutiny a few months ago after the government ordered an enquiry over the recall of Tavera. Slym returned to India within a year, but joined Tata Motors. In an interview with TOI last Wednesday he exuded confidence and said the company may be down, but not out. In what was perhaps his last media interview, Slym also told TOI that he was confident that the Nano would bounce back in a modern and young avatar, and had detailed plans for new launches. "We are confident of regaining our second-biggest Indian carmaker position as we move ahead with new plans," he had said. Besides work, Slym loved cricket. He was upset of not getting a Mumbai Indians T-shirt of his size ahead of the 2013 IPL final match. "His death comes at a time when the company seems to be close to turning the corner, with new designs and a new petrol engine family, which hasn't been Tata's strong point," Anil Sharma, an analyst with IHS Automotive was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. Tata Motors recently introduced a new petrol engine for its passenger vehicles and has been planning to launch a new hatchback and compact sedan this year, its first new branded passenger vehicles since 2010. "It (his death) comes before his efforts bear fruit. We should be able to see the results of his work in a year or two," Sharma said.
