  1. As Renault prepares for the market launch of the Clio Estate, the French brand has released a slew of photos of the new model. If you think that Estate body styles are well, lacking in style, the Clio Estate might change that impression. The new Clio Estate had its world premiere at last year's Paris Motor Show and will go on sale in Europe soon. The Clio Estate has an avant-garde front fascia inspired by the Dezir concept car. The Estate model has the same wheelbase as the Clio hatchback but an elongated boot means that the overall length of the car increases to 4,262mm. This improves the cargo-carrying capacity of the boot by 50% against the five-door's 443 litres. When the front passenger seat is folded flat, the new Renault Clio Estate boasts an impressive loading length of 2.48m from the tailgate to the glove compartment. The new Clio Estate is equipped with a selection of the latest power plants from Renault, including a turbocharged 0.9-litres straight-three which produces 90bhp and two versions of the diesel 1.5dCi straight-four, one with 75bhp and the other with 90bhp. All the above mentioned engines produce less than 100g of CO2 per km travelled.
  2. Opel has made an announcement to introduce the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It will be the first Opel model to feature GM Europe's latest diesel engine which will eventually replace the current range of 1.7-litre diesel and certain lower-powered 2.0-litre diesels. The 1.6-litre CDTi engine has an output of 134bhp with a peak torque of 320Nm, enabling the MPV to complete a century sprint in 10.4 seconds before achieving a top speed of 193km/h. In terms of efficiency, the Zafira sips fuel at an average rate of 4.1L/100 km with CO2 emissions of 109 g/km. This means that the oil burner should qualify for CEVS rebates of up to S$15,000 should the car come to Singapore. Measuring 4.66m (L) by 1.82m (W) by 1.69m (H), the Zafira is in the compact MPV market against the likes of the Volkswagen Touran and Toyota Wish.

  4. Everyday also hear on the radio about VG's TDI radio commercial. Went down to VGS Alexandra as quite interested in the Passat TDI but there is no test drive vehicle and they dun have one on display. Another minus point, only the 2L 140hp/320Nm TDI variant will make it here. No plans yet for the 2L 170hp/350Nm variant. Can't even do any booking as pricing not confirmed. Really all plain hot air from VGS! And the biggest let down, you cannot pump MY diesel as it will damage the diesel particulate filter. The sales claims that one can drive to and fro to KL w/o the need to refill, so short jaunts up north for a couple of days will be fine. But what happens if diesel ran out halfway? die die cannot pump? I saw lots of brand new diesel Mercz & Beemers rolling around in MY. Even manage to spot a X6 diesel on the NSH. How do they manage? Particulate filter removed? Coz i dun see any hint of black smoke even when tailing one diesel Beemer at 160kph on their highway. Any bro's here driving diesel powered private cars? Can share the average FC and the NVH? How do you guys manage to drive in MY? Cars only hor.. taxi, lorry and van owners nvm okie? kekeke

  6. Honda has released the details of its new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, the first mass-produced engine from Honda's latest Earth Dreams series of fuel efficient powertrains. The new motor will be first utilized in the Civic come early 2013 and later on in the new CRV. The 1.6-litre unit is the lightest diesel engine in its class, thanks a variety of weight-saving measures. It has an aluminium cylinder head joined to an open deck aluminium block and the thickness of the cylinder walls has been reduced to 8mm as compared to 9mm for the 2.2-litre i-DTEC. This makes the engine 47 kg lighter than the 2.2-litre power plant. The engine is also equipped with a Garret turbocharger featuring an efficient variable-nozzle design. All these mean that the fuel economy is rated at an impressive 3.59L/100km while CO2 emission stands at 94 g/km. It churns out 120bhp at 4,000 rpm and has a peak torque of 300Nm at 2,000 rpm. Hyundai's award-winning 1.6-litre CRDI lump produces slightly more power at 126bhp but less torque at 264Nm. Designed specifically for the European market, the new engine will be produced at Honda's facility in Swindon, U.K., with an output of 500 units per day.
  7. The mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, launched a proposition to the French government to ban old vehicles from the city to improve the air quality and reduce noise pollution. In his proposal, cars over 17-years old would not be allowed in Paris. Trucks and buses more than 18 years old and motorcycles built before 2004 would also be banned. To help poorer residents of Paris to upgrade to newer vehicles, the Socialist Party mayor suggested a "cash-for-clunkers"-type program. If approved, the ban will take effect in the second half of 2014. The proposal is part of a plan to cut air pollution in the city by 30% by 2015 and to turn Paris into a low-emission zone. French officials report about 43,000 annual death caused by poor air quality. Pierre Chasseray, a spokesman for a non-profit organization, commented that only 3% of the vehicles in France are above 17-years old and therefore the impact from the ban would not be great. Other critics say that the plan should focus on cutting down the use of diesel fuels instead. Collectors of vintage and classic vehicles would not be happy with the proposal as well. Other elements of the plan include reducing local speed limits from 80km/h to 70km/h and imposing a tax on heavy vehicles travelling in the city center. The reduction of speed limit does not really make sense to me as most cars would not be travelling at the highest gear ratio at 70km/h, which is no good for fuel efficiency. It seems like the only sensible suggestion is the tax on heavy vehicle.
  8. [extract] Diesel engines have undergone a technical revolution over the last twenty years. In the past diesel powered vehicles have been considered by many to be noisy, dirty (with smelly black exhaust) and underpowered. Today
  9. The US National Petroleum Council (NPC) says high costs and technology limitations will ensure that internal combustion engines remain the dominant power source for cars until at least the middle of the century. Although there have been innovations in electric and hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technologies, the lower cost of internal combustion engines and their suitability will see conventional petrol and diesel engines, hybrids, plug-ins and natural gas engines continue to lead the market until 2050. However, all is not lost for the environment. The NPC believes that the ongoing technological advancements in lightweight materials, improved aerodynamics and drivetrain electrification could see the fuel economy of internal combustion engine vehicles improve by 60 to 90% over the next four decades. The report also commented that it is too early to pinpoint the fuel of the future and hence recommends that a broad portfolio of technology options should be pursued and supported. Hence, oil producing nations can rest assured that their export will still be in hot demand for a long time to come. The National Petroleum Council is an American advisory committee representing oil and natural gas industry views to the Secretary of Energy.
  10. Most would know that diesel engine exhaust emissions are more dirty compared to petrol engines. Even though diesel engines have gotten progressively cleaner in recent years due to strict emissions standards, the World Health Organisation has announced recently that they have uncovered sufficient evidence to link diesel fumes with cases of cancer in human beings. The World Health Organisation which operates under the United Nations says that diesel fumes are a known cause for lung cancer and can increase the risks of bladder cancer. Carcinogen is the term used for describing any substance that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. As mentioned above, diesel engines are progressively getting cleaner. This is largely attributed to the usage of particulate filters, of more precise direct-injection technologies and also to the widespread use of ultra-low-sulphur diesel in some countries such as the United States. But this is not the case in many developing countries. There are still a lot of vehicles, mostly commercial vehicles, in those countries that use old fashioned diesel engines that use pre-chamber type indirect injection. To complicate the matter, the World Health Organization estimates that these vehicles will take a very long time to be replaced with cleaner ones. Chairman of the working group, Dr. Christopher Portier, explained that the scientific find was rather compelling and the group

  15. Diesel cars have never been popular in Singapore, especially the bigger engines. But i'm pretty sure there's a lot of driving enthusiasts out there who would love to own a diesel car, if the tax wasn't so high. In most countries, diesel cars are actually quite popular due to the fact that diesel is cheaper than petrol. Well, things are going to change around here, soon enough... As announced by the Minister for Finance, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, in his FY2012 Budget Statement, the special tax for Euro V compliant diesel cars will be revised with effect from 1st January 2013. Instead of the current rate of $1.25 per cubic centimetres (cc), the annual special tax for a Euro V compliant diesel car will be computed based on $0.40 per cubic centimetres (cc) of engine capacity, subject to a minimum annual payment of $400. The revision to the special tax structure for Euro V compliant diesel cars is made in recognition of its improved emissions, relative to pre-Euro V diesel cars. Motorists can choose to pay the special tax annually or 6-monthly, together with the road tax. The revised special tax for Euro V compliant diesel cars will result in nearly 70% savings to owners, as shown in the table below: According to LTA, the special tax for diesel taxis and Euro IV diesel cars will remain unchanged at $5,100 per annum and $1.25 per cubic centimetres (cc) respectively. 20. The new BMW 1-Series gains a fresh batch of engines. These new variants, presented in Europe, are the diesel-powered 125d and 116d EfficientDynamics Edition, and the petrol 125i. Of more interest to the Singapore market would be the gasoline-powered 125i. It has a 2.0L petrol engine with TwinPower Turbo Technology. It produces 215 hp and 310 Nm of torque, enabling the 8-speed automatic version to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds faster than its close rival, the Golf GTI E35. The 125i has a top speed of 245km/h. It is rather environmentally friendly and returns a fuel efficiency of 6.6 L/100km with CO2 emissions of 154 g/km. Up next is the 125d powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder diesel producing 218 bhp at 4,400rpm and 450Nm of peak torque. It sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds when paired with either the 6-speed manual gearbox or the 8-speed automatic transmission before hitting a top speed of 240km/h. It averages 4.9 L/100km with CO2 emissions of 129 g/km. The 116d has a 1.6L four-cylinder diesel engine with 114 hp and 260 Nm of torque. It is connected to a six-speed manual transmission which allows the car to run from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 195 km/h. Thanks to an aerodynamic body kit and low rolling resistance tires, the 116d returns an impressive fuel economy of 3.8 L/100km with CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. The BMW 1 series M Sport package will include an aggressive body kit, a sports suspension with 10mm reduced height and either 17 or 18-inch alloys. On the inside, the driver/occupants will be pampered with fabric/Alcantara sports seats. Other highlights include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum door sill plates and lots of
  21. A profitable future for automakers usually relies mostly on yielding the best return from their products and technologies and at times these technologies does not come from the automaker themselves. There have been numerous partnerships between two auto firms and usually it is to exchange technologies with each other. Lately, BMW and Toyota have gone down that route. Sometime last month, BMW and Toyota held talks regarding the exchange of technologies that they excel in. Reportedly, BMW will supply their diesel engines to Toyota and in exchange, Toyota will share its hybrid technology with BMW. During the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, both companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a mid to long term collaboration on next-generation environment-friendly technologies. Toyota aims to offer its current line-up with diesel engines especially in Europe where diesel emission tests are very stringent. And also they need to find a source outside of Japan to alleviate the strength of the Yen. BMW is working hard on their i3 concept hybrid and to fund a hybrid technology development will cost a lot of money compared to buying that technology from another company, for this case, Toyota. Toyota will receive access to BMW
