  1. Witness an accident involving a scooter and a taxi at the junction of Sengkang East Road and Sengkang East Way today (17-Feb-2014) at around 5.30pm. After the taxi collided with the scooter, the taxi driver was seen (in the video) gesturing to other drivers that its the scooter's fault, and he went back to his taxi, he did not offer immediate help or assistance to the scooter. After some time later, he was then seen walking back to the scooter rider and "talked" to him. http://tinyurl.com/kfc6b66 http://youtu.be/xeUFQcYXkOc
  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h683pzcwpnA Since the extra demerit point system was implemented at school zones on Jan 1, Traffic Police reported 17 speeding offences in school zones; 11 drivers were caught beating the red light; 16 for careless driving and one for inconsiderate driving. On Thursday morning, the media observed how the Traffic Police conducted their enforcement in three school zones in the eastern part of Singapore. Two Traffic Police officers were stationed outside Temasek Secondary School on Upper East Coast Road to catch motorists speeding down the road, which has a speed limit of 50km/hr. Within 15 minutes of operations, Traffic Police caught a female van driver speeding down the road. The two officers chased after the driver in their motorbikes. She eventually stopped by the side of the road and her particulars were taken down. She declined to speak to the media. As part of stepped up enforcement against errant motorists in school zones, an extra demerit point applies to all motorists caught committing the offence of careless driving, inconsiderate driving, beating the red light, or speeding within school zones. 11. Just received a alert message from LTA, North East Line is current down between Harborfront and Dhoby Ghaut. Earlier it was reported delay by CNA. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1247059/1/.html SINGAPORE: Train services in both directions on the North East Line (NEL) are delayed due to a power fault. Train operator SBS Transit alerted commuters at 10:18am on Twitter of a delay of 15 minutes. It said free bus rides are available at designated bus stops. SBS Transit first alerted commuters via SMS at about 10am, saying there had been a delay of 15 minutes due to a power fault. It said at about 10:30am that shuttle services were activated at designated bus stops to provide free bus rides.
  12. Any thoughts? The President of Singapore, Tony Tan, has issued a writ of election for Punggol East constituency with Nomination Day being next Wednesday, the16th of January. If more than one candidate is nominated, Polling Day will take place later this month on the 26th of January. The Punggol East seat was left vacant after MP Michael Palmer stepped down due to an extra-marital affair last month. Pasir Ris-Punggol MP, Teo Ser Luck, has been standing in as caretaker MP in recent weeks. PM Lee said in a statement on Wednesday that he advised the President to call the by-election quickly as it was important that Punggol residents "can have their own MP in Parliament" and because of a "busy national agenda this year". "The White Paper on Population will soon be debated in Parliament. Budget 2013 is around the corner. The Our Singapore Conversation is translating the views of citizens into programmes to improve our lives," he added. The single-seat constituency is expected to be hotly contested with as many as five parties -- including the Workers' Party, Singapore Democratic Party, the Singapore Democratic Alliance and even the Reform Party -- expressing interest in contesting the by-election in recent weeks. On Tuesday, a surprise candidate, 40-year-old surgeon, Dr Koh Poh Koon, may have emerged as the People's Action Party (PAP) choice, after he was seen accompanying Teo during an Meet-the-People session. This is the second by-election is as many years, after Hougang also held a by-election last year, which Workers' Party member Png Eng Huat won decisively over PAP candidate Desmond Choo. But this time around, Punggol East is seen as a stronghold for the PAP, going by the last general election results in May 2011 when Palmer defeated WP candidate, Lee Li Lian, by a convincing 54.5 percent to 41 percent of votes. A third candidate, Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim received 4.4 percent of votes. However, analysts Yahoo! Singapore spoke to last month said that if the contest were to be a straight fight between the WP and PAP, the former could be seen as favourites. "This is a competitive seat with a three-corner fight last round. A one-on-one contest will make this a potentially winnable seat for the opposition," said Bridget Welsh, associate professor in Political Science at Singapore Management University (SMU). Meanwhile, Punngol-East resident Syed Muhammad, 25, welcomed the possibility of a multi-party contest. "I believe that it is a good idea to let the 5 parties compete as our PM mentioned in his statement he wants us (residents) to vote for the best MP to represent us. By having as many as five parties contest, I believe residents will be able to wisely consider who is best suited for the job," he said. Another resident, Nadh, a 25-year-old freelance designer, welcomed the timing of the by-election. "I like how they are acting fast to get a replacement for Palmer. I don't think it's too rushed because residents here just want a fast solution," he said. 17. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_782112.html why liddat? Seven of the 12 youths involved in the Downtown East gang clash of 2010 that left a student dead had their murder charges reduced to lesser ones on Monday. Of the seven, five will now be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and two, for rioting with a dangerous weapon. No reason was given for stepping down the charges. y no reason? With this development on Monday, it means that the gang of 12 allegedly behind the bloodbath at the entertainment hub on Oct 30, 2010 will be spared the gallows.

  20. SINGAPORE: The first of the group involved in the Downtown East murder has pleaded guilty. 21-year-old Jason Chew Wei Beng admitted to three charges on Wednesday. Prosecution is proceeding on two of the three charges - rioting and voluntarily causing hurt. Chew admitted to causing grievous hurt to 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie on 30 October 2010, between 5.30pm and 5.57pm, at the foyer of Downtown East. He did so with 11 members of an unlawful assembly, by slashing and stabbing the deceased with knives, choppers and a screwdriver. In mitigation, defence counsel Tan Beng Swee told the court that his client did not expect a fight to take place at Downtown East as his friends did not warn him about it. Mr Tan said Chew subsequently met his other friends and for fear of getting implicated, he kept a distance from the group as he walked behind them. The defence lawyer added that Chew then went to McDonald's with two of his friends and were taunted by the girlfriends of his buddies. At that time, two groups were said to be arguing outside the fast food chain. Trying not to lose face, the trio at McDonald's went out to help their friends. Unfortunately for Chew, Mr Tan said the fight broke out just as he went to join his group of friends. Mr Tan also stressed that Chew is not a secret society member. He pointed out that Chew, unlike his other friends who were in for a fight, did not bring or buy choppers or knives. Wrapping up, Mr Tan said none of the injuries inflicted on the deceased was due to Chew. In response, Deputy Public Prosecutor Peggy Pao said the charges were amended and reduced to reflect the lesser culpability of Chew's involvement. While Chew tried to distant himself from the group, he remained. DPP Pao said he could have walked away when taunted, instead of giving in, but he did not and the act of joining the fight shows that he lacked morals. She added that Chew cannot claim the glory of being in a fight, yet hope that later on he would not have to face the consequences. Prosecution added that Chew had been placed on probation previously but still went ahead to take part in the fight. For rioting, Chew faces a jail term of up to seven years and shall be liable to caning. He admitted that he punched the head of 20-year-old Yeo Jun Liang on 6 April 2010 at about 6.10pm at Bishan bus interchange, together with three friends. For this charge, Chew faces a maximum jail term of two years, or with fine of up to S$5,000, or both. Sentencing will take place on the 6 March. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1184485/1/.html

  24. Title : Track fault causes delay on East-West Line By : Date : 08 January 2012 1304 hrs (SST) URL : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1175448/1/.html SINGAPORE: Train services on the Circle Line between Marymount and Botanic Gardens were disrupted Sunday afternoon due to a signalling fault. SMRT said on its Twitter site at about 3.00 pm that service was back to normal. A commuter told Channel NewsAsia that he was at Serangoon station when he heard an announcement that there would be "no train service" between Marymount and Farrer Road stations. He said he understands that commuters had to get off at Marymount station because the train could not proceed to Farrer Road station. He said commuters were advised to find alternative transport. Separately, train services on the East-West Line between Boon Lay and Joo Koon were also delayed Sunday afternoon due to a track fault. At about 2.00 pm, SMRT said the track fault had cleared and services on all lines were operating normally but urged commuters to allow extra time for travel due to wet tracks. SMRT told Channel NewsAsia that the problem started at about 12.30 pm on Sunday. At about 1.00 pm, SMRT said east-bound and west-bound services between Boon Lay and Joo Koon were slightly delayed due to a track fault. Some commuters were asked to alight from one of the trains at Lakeside station as a precaution. Commuters had to wait an extra two minutes for the trains. Callers to the Channel NewsAsia reported similar delays. One commuter, Stanley, said he was at City Hall station when he heard the announcement at about 12.40 pm of a delay in service. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1175448/1/.html
